@zeesparrow Great job on your 5k PR! You really smashedd it!
@Elise4270 eek gads snake bit cat! Scary stuff. Hope he makes it.
@quilteryoyo welcome back! Yeah, I wouldn't go back and read 25 pages of posts either. Suffice it to say, we are all good, or working towards it 😁2 -
I had another 10k yesterday - the same run series but a different location to the one three weeks ago.
You won't remember, but the previous race was an awesome run for me and I clocked up a new PB, however, there were no marshalls on the course and I, along with about a third of participants, ran 11.5km, while another third ran just over 9km. We were able to submit our Strava records to have them correct the race results, something I was only interested in because I PB'd, however, after a couple of weeks they've decided it's just too hard (I blame those who ran short and got amazing results and are unwilling to have time added) and have scrapped all results from the event!
So, with that in mind, my aim for yesterday was to go even faster and get a whole new PB. I thought it should be achievable as I spent at least five seconds in the other race standing dead still, wondering which way to run, plus I ran in the wrong direction for about 10 seconds, plus I didn't have the finish line buzz at 10k that's good for a few more seconds. My reasoning was I could shave another 20 seconds off if the course was as flat and fast as the earlier one was.
Turns out it wasn't. Although promised flat and fast, half of it was undulating single track trail. No major climbs, but lots of short and steep up and downs. Add to that it had rained heavily for the couple of days prior, it was muddy, and worse, there were four very slippery wooden bridges that were the end of more than one runner (which we also ran twice).
On top of that my legs were a bit leaden and never really felt good (have woken this morning with a sore throat so maybe that was the first sign I was coming down with something...). Upshot was nowhere near a PB. I did manage 15th woman home (of 130) which was better than expected, and 6th in my age group – my friend who's the age group below was 20th woman overall but 5th in her age group - There are obviously a bunch of speedy older ladies in this series!
Next run in the series is a tough, muddy, off-road course so no chance to get a new PB until the 5th event in the series in August. That location isn't dead flat either... trots off to find a suitable 10k event...
TL:DR Ran a 10k, it was ok.

@zeesparrow - Great job on your PR and staying on top mentally and keeping yourself going even when it got hard and you didn't feel great! I have not gotten sick per se on a run or in a race but I know plenty who have. Maybe those particular GUs aren't the best for you and now you know before you use them in an actual race!
@ContraryMaryMary - I think it is sad when a race has problems like that and they can't/don't fix it and just dump all the results. All those with super fast times don't benefit from not getting it corrected either, other than telling themselves they ran a fast/best race. Sounds like the 10k this weekend was better managed (no one got lost) even if the course was not as flat and fast. Hope you are feeling better and not getting sick!
I had planned in my mind a 10 mile run for this morning but honestly knew I would be happy with anything over 8. We headed out a bit late but it was only 63F and maybe 50% humidity. I think the dew point was only 59. Everything felt great starting out, nothing hurt (yay) at all. Miles 2-6 felt pretty darn good and I kept a pretty even, if too fast, pace. I kept trying to slow down because my HR was going too high (mid 130s) and I knew I couldn't sustain it. Apparently I don't know how to slow down. Mile 7 was probably about the same pace as the 1st 6 except I stopped to chat with a couple who was trying to figure out how to get to another part of the trail. Of course I didn't stop my watch so it looks like a really slow mile. The last couple of miles seemed like more walking than running as both Hobbes and I were hot and tired. It really wasn't all that hot... only 75F with still low humidity and dew point. As soon as we walked in the back yard I stripped off my shoes and socks and went in the pool with Hobbes on the steps. I hope I get acclimated to the heat soon! Well that and I need to get up and out the door earlier - such a struggle for me.

Nominal June mileage goal: 100
Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's notes – With one thing an another, the window I had to run today started a bit before 10 AM. Temperature was reasonable at 62° F (17° C) with light wind and pleasant sunshine. Felt great, for a while. Then I noticed the deceptive humidity. Got home drenched in sweat. Welcome to summer. Later on, there will be nothing deceptive about the humidity, so I suppose I should enjoy weather like this for as long as it lasts.
Planned to run a familiar 6-ish mile route from my home. Along about 3 miles, I thought I could run 8 miles today, easy. Told myself that would be foolish. Last week I ran 33 miles, a peak week since coming back from injury. This week I should run 33 to 36 miles, and consolidate that gain. Told myself I have potentially 3 quality runs this week, which is a lot. Stuck to the route.
By the time I got past 5 miles, the humidity had made itself known. Yes, I could have run 8 miles today; but 6 was enough to feel like I'd done something. Best of all, nothing hurts.
Rest day tomorrow. I'll have to think about how I want to handle running for the rest of the week; the important day is Saturday, with a 5-ish mile trail race.

@Elise4270 Oh my, that sounds scary! Glad your kitty will be ok.
@quilteryoyo Welcome back, and congrats on the distance!
@d_hakman Welcome!
@ContraryMaryMary Great job on your 10k in those difficult conditions. I hope you get over that sore throat/illness and feel better soon.
Thank you, @PastorVincent, @polskagirl01, @Tramboman, @quilteryoyo, @rheddmobile, @Scott6255 and @shanaber. I am still on a high from that PR!
@rheddmobile, That WAS my first sub 10 minute mile... at least in many years. I ran one on a treadmill back in ...2012? But that was a single mile. This is my very first run on the road at that speed --- and 3 of them in a row? Just unbelievable. Running slow IS making me faster! Thanks also for the information on the blood sugar after the GU. I wasn't sure and figured waiting half an hour or so was probably better than not, and it gave me time to drink more water. I will certainly bring water with me next time though, as I certainly could have used it!
Today is a rest day. I'll take the dogs out for a walk in a little bit, and hope to be able to get away during lunch for some yoga and stretching.5 -
6.3 miles this morning. 15°F cooler today. Made such a difference. Didn't need any water, only 1 chew. Back to reality tomorrow. It was a great mini vacation in Arkansas. Swimming, kayaking, running, kid's baseball game, family. Plus made monthly goal!

I'm back from vacation! I've actually been back about a week, just been too busy to sit down and compile everything. I hope everyone is well!
We went to Vancouver and an Alaska cruise. Alaska is a beautiful part of the of the country and I just adored Vancouver. I could absolutely live there! I managed to get in a few runs on the boat and really enjoyed whale watching from the treadmill. It makes the time fly by. We also got in a little rock climbing and a 3.5 hour hike to see an amazing glacier. I would love to go back to Alaska in the future, but it will be several years. The wish list for travel is so long right now!!
Also, I did my first 10 mile run last Friday! It got hard about mile 8 because my calves were getting super tight. Otherwise, I was feeling pretty good. Hopefully the calves will adjust to the distance over time. I stretched really well and wasn't sore the next day, so that's good.
Definitely not making goal this month. I overestimated my ability to cruise and run at the same time.

@AlphaHowls - Amazing as always!
@martaindale - welcome back from vacation! I too have tried to run on a treadmill while on a cruise. It made me motion sick which was something I had never experienced before or since. Great job on the 10 mile run!!
I went out for a recovery run thinking I might have to make it a recovery walk. I was pleasantly surprised that it felt so great. Not sure I will make it all the way to my goal but I will be close. Certainly closer than I was in May.

I was thinking this morning that I felt well rested and for once, not sore or overly tired legs, so I was kind of looking forward to today's run. The humidity seemed to sap it out of me pretty quickly though and I was struggling mentally with wanting to cut it short the whole time. But I listened to an entertaining episode of Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me and that kept me going enough to get 4 miles in before I had to head to the gym for strength training. Love when you laugh out loud while running and other people think you are a crazy person.
I should make my goal if all goes well, but I'm traveling Thursday through Sunday for a fun girl's weekend and the forecast doesn't look very promising.7 -
I was dancing all weekend at a music festival so my legs were so sore for the start of my run today! It was cold and rainy as well so I decided to do a treadmill run.
Today's run: 4km, 27:00
Distance so far: 39km
June distance goal: 50km8 -
A little deja Vu?
Snake bit again. Guess who just became an indoor kitty?
He's either unlucky or there's an abundance of snakes this year. Be care out there!15 -
5 miles. Weather was much nicer today! Humid, but only in the 80s. This is only my second 5 mile run since the Achilles’ tendon was hurt, so it was a pretty leisurely run. Ankle feels much better afterwards than it did last time, it’s slow but does appear to be gradually improving.
We saw a very pregnant doe just a few feet off the trail. It was late and the woods were shadowy and most people were walking right by without seeing her. When we stopped, she got very tall, then decided we were no threat and went back to munching. After our run we walked down to the river at sunset and watched various flyers catching bugs over the water. There were two different sizes of bats, swallows and swifts, and dragonflies, all darting about hunting mosquitoes and gnats. Then on the way back after dark, the woods were full of owls calling to each other. I need to look up the various owls in our area and the calls they make. I recognized several Barred Owls, and one Great Horned, but there was also an owl I had never heard before.5 -
Hey all,
Have skipped a heap of posts so sorry if I've missed any PBs! Congratulations to everyone who has though, I know someone has.
I have arrived in New city, and somewhat settled in. We are living in a hospital house so my walk to work is literally 2 minutes. Yesterday was my first day and my brain was fried by the end (by information, not radiation thankfully!). It was a good day, everyone is friendly and helpful.
Today I got out my brand new amazon shoes and went for a 3k run! It was glorious! My chest started to get tight at about 2.5k, so the decision to do a shorter run was the right one. It was also only 8 degrees C. Chilly for me! I am going to have to buy gloves I think. Any recommendations? I would prefer something thin/light weight that I will probably strip off half way through.
The shoes were perfect. Fit just like my old ones. Some regrets not buying 2 pairs lol but I have a gift card for another pair at some point.
So slowly getting back into a routine, so glad to be running again. It really made my day start well.

I’m at the beach this week. Packed my Garmin charger but not the watch itself. Been running by time and the health app on my phone. I ran 5 miles on Sunday and 8 yesterday. Heading to a boot camp shortly. Hope everyone is having a good week.8

On the weather discussion - we typically have pretty low humidity (Los Angeles basin is considered desert) so when it is humid we all think we are dieing! Right now though it is what we call June gloom weather. Cool marine layer in the mornings (mid-60's), overcast and even a bit drizzly at times. It clears off mostly by the afternoons and gets warm but not too warm. That will come in August and September. @KatieJane83 - I think you would really like the weather in the Pacific Northwest!
Finally, slowly catching up on this thread! I agree! I do enjoy that kind of weather. I will actually get bummed if it's been too long of a stretch with no gray, rainy days, lol. Yes, I know I'm odd!

It is officially week one of my marathon training plan (Hal Higdon Novice 1) for the Marine Corps Marathon in October! Provided my 4 run days go as scheduled I should beat my monthly goal by 1.6 miles. Woot!

Muggy post-rain morning run - wanted it done before I talked myself into a day off. I need to save that for later in the week!7 -
Yesterday I got to run 1.73 miles to the gym. It was my third run since my shin-related break, and the first one that I didn’t feel the need to stop and stretch or walk. I feel like I’m one run away from getting my confidence back. Fingers crossed. I didn’t hit any of my weekly goals last week but I was pretty close on both moderate cardio and mobility, so I’ll take it.
June Total: 22.57 miles
Revised June Goals: Lift 3x/week, 30 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 30 minutes/day of mobility. Run when I can.

I had a really nice 6.22 mile run this morning. It was humid, but it was only 68F and the dew point was only 65 so it was a lot more comfortable than Sunday's run at 85F with a dew point of 72. I was able to get going a little early so I had time for 6 miles instead of just 5 and today's run puts me over my goal for June. I did yell at the lady down the street who lets her dog loose. As I was heading home I saw a couple walking and here comes that dog and starts barking around the man's feet. I told her that she wasn't supposed to let her dog run lose. It really annoys me because not only could the dog have bit the man, but he could have tripped him they way he was under foot. I don't know why some people think it is ok to let small dogs run loose. The only dog's that have ever bit me were small dogs.
@Elise4270 Poor kitty! I hope he's better soon!

@katharmonic Thank you!
@Elise4270 Oh no! Poor kitty. Is his eye going to be ok?
@Avidkeo Sounds like you're all moved in, and started the new job with a great first day. And new shoes for running to top it off? Yay!
@KatieJane83 Woot! Will this be your first marathon?
@MegaMooseEsq Fingers crossed for you here, although that does make it difficult to type. How about toes? Nope. Can't do that. ANKLES crossed for you! I've been meaning to ask, what do you do for your 30 minutes/day of mobility?

Yesterday I forgot to bring my workout bag and clothes to work, even though I had them ready to go. One coworker (and workout friend) was out sick, so I went for a walk with two others and then stretched a little. TODAY I brought my bag so I'll get my yoga in at lunch, unless work interferes.
This morning I ran an easy 2+ miles with the dogs. After dropping them off at home, I ate a single Gu chew (same as on Sunday but only one this time), drank about 8oz of water and went back out for the rest of the 4.5 miles. I decided as I left to go a route that would give me the option of a couple hills. At the first, I turned off before it got too steep, though even the way I went was still a gradual uphill for another 200 meters. Then on the way home, I went up another 200 meter hill -- and was able to run up it without dying! Progress! No tummy issues today either, though that chew sure woke up my hunger. Usually I don't eat breakfast until later but I ate it all before I got to work.
My calves are pretty tight now so I'm looking forward to lunchtime yoga and stretching, and will use my foam roller again tonight too.6 -

I've been doing a lot of short yoga videos (Yoga with Adrienne on youtube), but I also try to do a few minutes of foam rolling every couple of days, and I have a series of exercises from my PT that I'm doing before running, so I count all of that, too.1 -
@MegaMooseEsq Cool! I discovered her yoga videos through one of the running-specific ones a while ago, but only just started doing them more regularly this month. I randomly pick one (or one of my coworkers does) and it really seems to help a lot!1

@KatieJane83 Thanks. Kitty is settling in to the new place just fine. On the other hand, I have yet to get internet and my cell phone is super slow because I am on roaming and they noticed. My speed is so slow that I rarely can get the Community to even open. I am starting to run again after a week off to move, will catch up ticker when I get internet.5
