About the Garmin. Firstly, @Elise4270 you have a heart that is bigger than you but no way could I accept that! I currently have a fitbit (he doesn't know how much that cost either! gotta love marriage sometimes) that is about a year old. When it dies, I will replace it with a Garmin. To this end, I am saving up every bit of loose change he leaves in his pockets, change from groceries, etc etc. I could have afforded to get myself one with a little bit of money my great-aunt left me when she died. But I spent it on tickets to the Bon Jovi concert in Madrid next month. And a hotel room there, and train tickets to get there. I've been waiting 25 years to see Bon Jovi in concert. And it's almost here! 3 weeks and 2 days to go!!!! Not that I'm counting!!!! Can you tell I'm excited, much? lol
No run for me today. Friday is my rest day. Plus I have to get to the city to pick up my T-shirt and number for tomorrow night's race. Feeling a little more confident I can finish under the cutoff time now, not sure my legs will approve of me doing so though. Oh well.
Bon Jovi Sounds like an awesome splurge and celebration of your great aunts life! I bought a not terribly expensive violin when my dad died. Funny how music speaks to the soul. I thought you might be in Europe. I never realized Spain was so beautiful until last week, watching a show where retirees had their illegally built homes knocked down in Spain, guess the government there is against foreign retirees. I’d move there, if I could keep a home. Absolutely stunning. I should buy you a Garmin and come to Spain. Hahaha!
@Elise4270 Lol when I was around 8 years old they made us take a music exam at school, and the 4 most musically talented kids (which somehow I was one of???) were given free violin lessons. I was so freakin awful at playing the violin that my mother used to tell me "Honey why don't you go and do your violin practise in the garage? The rabbits really love to hear you"
Spain is beautiful and the Spanish are great people. If you want to see photos of the area I often post them on my Facebook, add me there!
The government doesn't hate foreigners at all, in fact it loves them because they bring a lot of money into the country. It just hates illegal buildings. Those stories are very sad, people buy without checking what they're buying, and by the time they realise that their 6 bedroom villa with private heated swimming pool, garage for 4 cars and helipad is registered as a tool shed and is within a protected nature area where building is forbidden it's too late to back out. Usually if they bothered to either learn the language or employ someone who knows the language and the regulations they would not end up in those messes.
Btw property is cheap here, and so is life compared to many places. And if you came to visit I'd let you bring me one! Downside is we're about 15 years behind the rest of the world in progress and technology. And groups like Bon Jovi only come to play here every 10-15 years, and then they only usually go to Madrid or Barcelona. Like everywhere, it has its pros and cons.

I’d take 10-15 years behind technology. Who needs it when it’s Spain! Those story’s did elude to trusting the wrong folks to file the proper documents, and they didn’t speak the language. Those homes were beautiful, and so so cheep. I’ll remember to have you help me with my purchase of that Spanish villa! Well lay around after a good run together by the pool and have drinks and snacks.3 -

Run felt tough this morning. My legs were sore and sluggish. But I did manage to only walk 2 times so I’ll call it a win!
Today’s run: 4km, 28:00
Distance so far: 19km
June distance goal: 50km7 -
Testing? Was anyone else having trouble posting for the last hour or so? Anyhoo, that's why I draft my comments in a notepad before posting!eleanorhawkins wrote: »@MegaMooseEsq my situation is similar to yours (work from home, very long hours at the desk) and I find pilates/yoga-type stuff essential for my back. As long as I keep that up I'm fine, but as soon as I miss a couple of days, I find I can't turn over in bed at night without squealing. Well done on resisting the trying to run and see urge, that isn't easy even when you know it makes sense!
I'd been trying to get yoga to click for a couple of years when I discovered that fitting 5-10 minute yoga videos into my work day gave me so much more energy and focus than anything I'd tried before. Now I'm hooked, although I still haven't done anything longer than a half an hour at a time. Every little bit counts!
On the marriage bit, I guess all I can say is that every relationship has its own challenges, and I hope that the good sides outweigh the bad. And Spain sounds amazing - I too would love to visit someday!2 -
@eleanorhawkins and @elise4270 - My mom and stepdad lived in Spain while he worked in Algeria. They rented a tiny house in a village on the island of Mallorca. They walked to the local markets for fresh fish and veggies, local olives and almonds and bought wine straight from the barrel (BYOB and cork 😊) It was amazing but like @eleanorhawkins said with some downsides. They were over an hour away from the main/big town (Palma) and had only a very basic healthcare clinic who didn't recognize that my mom was having a heart problem. She is buried there in the place she loved! My daughter went to visit her gravesite which was difficult to find and met so many wonderful people who helped her. She is fluent in Spanish even though the dialect is a bit different she could communicate easily. She spent a couple of weeks traveling around the mainland as well. Loved it there.6

This morning I did 4.8 miles run/walk. 5 min walk/8 min run intervals, then uphill run/downhill walk intervals.
Thinking about adding 3 full body strength training workouts 3 times a week on my walking days.
Maybe ...
bodyweight squats
stepups
bridges
dumbbell rows or lat pulldowns
bench or dumbbell flys
military press or dumbbell raises
Also trying to change my diet. Doing 2-3 eggs and fruit for breakfast/2 tuna pouches lunch/ about 1000 cals for dinner (I'm a night eater) and then greek yogurt with fruit before bed.

Notes medical needs and employment opportunities in Spain... maybe @workaholic_nurse will come too. And @Avidkeo .
That food sounds great. I just wanna live somewhere there’s not a burger join on every corner.1 -

I almost gave up on my running streak yesterday. It was pouring rain when I got up so I decided to wait to run until the evening. Then I went to the funeral of my cousin’s 9-month old baby. It was so hard to see that baby lying in that tiny casket and the heartbreak that the parents, grandparents and other family members were experiencing. It was really hard on my mom who had also experienced the loss of a child (my 18-year old sister to leukemia). Meningitis had caused brain damage in Baby Nora. For the last 8 months of her short life, she never opened her eyes or cried. She was fed with a feeding tube so her body kept growing and she was beautiful. The only consoling thought that I hold onto is my belief that she is now in heaven and her body is made fully-whole. So, give your loved ones whether they be big or small a big old hug and tell them that you love them!
@shanaber – I took a Mediterranean cruise a few years ago. We boarded in Barcelona and arrived a couple of days early to be tourists. I loved Barcelona. Our first stop on the cruise was Palma de Mallorca. Such a beautiful place. I would love to go back to Spain and see some of the less populated areas.
I’m registered for a 5K in the morning but I may end up walking it instead of running. Me and two of my friends have run this race since it first started three years ago. It is a small race to raise money to restore a local theatre. One of the friends is recovering from a car accident so I plan to walk with her if she doesn’t feel like running. After that we’re planning on doing some hiking. The weather is supposed to be sunny with a high of 85. A great day to be alive and outside! Good luck to all those racing!

In the midst of new shoe testing. Ugh. NOT my favorite thing in the world. I don't think the NB 1080s will work out. The Topos did pretty well on Wed, a bit of numbness but it went away in one foot. More numbness on today's test run, but not as painful as the NB's. Blah. I don't even know. I'm gonna give them a few more test runs. I'm very vaguely cautiously optimistic about the Topo's, lol, although I also need to keep adjusting to the lower drop (5mm vs the 10mm of my previous Brooks Glycerins). Def feeling it in my calves on the two test runs on the uphills.
Anywho, it is glorious weather today. Warmer than my ideal running temps still, but 70°F, humidity of only 49%, sunny, but with a glorious breeze. It made me really really really not want to go back inside the office
I'm also optimistic about my goal for the month. Just over halfway there and just under halfway through the month.
Happy Friday all!

Have you tried shortening your stride with the lower drop? That foot numbness, I assume, is constant pressure. Shorting it up would allow your knees hips legs to absorb more of impact. Also, if you're not already, take to some trails. I find my stride naturally shortens.
I have shoes I can do on trail but a road race leaves the bottom of my feet numb. I do have nerve damage which can cause that, but I think it's also a normal running experience.
Good luck

The numbness is not a thing unique to lower drop shoes for me. My trail shoes are zero drop Altras, and I don't run a ton in them but they don't make my feet numb. I tend to have a cadence that averages around 172-174, and my last 5k race averaged 180. I also don't heel strike so don't have a super hard strike impact. I can't seem to figure out what exactly causes it but there are just some shoes that do it to me. My beloved previous model Brooks Glycerins never caused numbness! Any time I've looked for new brands/styles of shoes I've run into this struggle, lol. Tis a frustrating puzzle!1 -

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Did an afternoon run today. Mostly sunny, 75 degrees F, with a light northwest breeze. Fulfilled my pledge to my Run the Year team by getting my 500 mile bib. I was humorously accused of sandbagging my pledge - guess I did.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K4 -

This. Make sure they are not tight on your foot. If your ankle has pressure it could cause numbness in your feet. But, ultimately, probably just need a different style of shoe.

Tis a frustrating puzzle!
Aww darn it. I was hoping for an easy solution. How about your laces? Are they loose enough?
I had one foot go numb wearing NB 1080's, and loosening the laces as well as shorter strides/higher cadence helped. My cadence was lower than yours initially. Altra Escalantes are my current shoe, which I absolutely love. I do want to try a pair of the Topo's though.
Good luck figuring out what will work for you now!2 -
I have numbness issues fairly commonly as well. I have Morton's Neuroma in both feet. Have you checked out the symptoms for that?1
