Today's Yesterday's notes – It's getting to be the season when I run in the evening, and I'm too tired to post till the next day.
Went to club practice yesterday evening. Ran my 2 mile warmup, listened to Coach's talk, looked at the board. The workouts offered were, distance runners do 2-3 x (2000, 1000) a threshold w/2 minutes recovery; people prepping for a 5 K do 2-3 x (800, 1000, 1000, 800) at interval pace w/same time recovery, 5 minutes between sets, then 1 set of 15 second cutbacks starting at 60 seconds.
Both of those looked rather ambitious for my current conditioning and the fact that I ran a 5K race 2 days earlier. I wanted to something, but not something that hard. I found a different way to water down the workout.
One of the more recent members, a guy who joined the club about a year ago, is currently trying to break below 21 minutes for a 5K. I think he ran a PR 21:11 on Sunday. So he asks me what I'm running, with the plan of running with me. Note, on Sunday I ran a 20:19 while a bit out of shape. My paces are too fast for this guy to train. But that gave me an idea. I offered to pace him for the (800, 1000, 1000, 800) at interval pace, which would be *his* interval pace. For a 21 minute 5K, that's about 51 seconds for 200 meters. Told him how to run that, and he wasn't getting it; so I said I'd pace it for him. That slows him down to an honest interval pace for him, and has me running a soft threshold pace with a lot more recovery that threshold intervals usually get.
The results were not surprising. He was ready to jog for the 3+ minutes after the first 800, able to mostly walk, jog a little the 4+ minutes after the first 1000, and wiped out enough to need really gentle walking around after the second 1000. I did bring the intervals in slightly fast, but not horribly so; they stayed a little slower than my normal threshold.
Told him I was only running 1 set, because right now I don't have the base to support 2 sets at T. Another friend who had run the first set with us offered to run a second set with him, but I thought to ask how many miles he was running. Maybe 34 or 35 a week. By the standard of 8% of weekly mileage is the most I pace you should run in a workout, that caps him at 2.8 miles. We ran about 2.25 miles in the first set. Told him to bag the second set and just do one set of cutbacks.
For whatever reason, he didn't want to time his own cutbacks. Said he'd run them with me. You realize I'm going to run them faster than we ran those intervals? So I ran the cutbacks, and he stayed fairly close in the fast intervals. Then he was wiped and needed to walk in what should have been the slow running intervals. Oh, well. I went out for a cool down run with him, and mostly let him set the pace. Ended up averaging slower than a 9 minute mile on the cool down, which I would never have done running solo. But it wasn't bad for me to slow down, particularly on a day when I ran my greatest total distance since coming back from the stress fracture.
This morning I felt beat up like I was deep into marathon training. Clearly, I have a lot of work left to get back into shape. Equally clearly, it was a good thing I didn't run a serious workout at my own paces yesterday evening. I'll be up for an easy run this evening, and I think I'll go for easy tomorrow as well. I've done as much hard running as I should this week.
In other news, I felt so optimistic yesterday on my rest day that I signed up for another race. Not a huge big deal; I had been intending to run Oak Tree Half all along. But yesterday I noticed that the price was going to go up before my credit card bill cycle ended, so I signed up.

Missed out on Sunday's jog. Fathers day got in the way, with a lie in and later a chinese. Dinner was still sitting pretty heavily at 10 30pm so i slacked off the run and stayed in to play with my present - a new smartwatch.
So i wont meet a couple of goals this month. But did the usual jog tonight and it seemed to work fine.

Second run group workout of the week, this time with the marathon/HM group. Same workout of 1 minute hard intervals with 1-minute recovery between, but this time 12 of them instead of 9. I was definitely feeling fatigued from the last few days. I skipped the sprints and just did the cooldown after. It was really humid and the whole thing just felt hard.5 -

Along these lines... could whoever shared that’s heat index/dew point chart last summer do so again? I have my 2nd week of this summer traveling to terrible places to go in the summer. My first venture to hot Andy humid this month was more of a drinks with the girls trip than a running trip so I didn’t worry about it. But I probably need enough knowledge to decide if I will die while running in Kansas City next week, BEFORE I do it. This square state girl who finally saw 70 degrees today did not think that chart was relevant last year and didn’t pay attention to it.rheddmobile wrote: »My favorite sighting of the day was a heavy woman who we often see walking during our runs. She has been doing this for a few months now and gradually improving in fitness - when we first saw her, her gait was sort of lumbering slowly, and more recently she has been walking briskly. Today she was RUNNING! Yay good for her! I wish there were a way of saying, “Hey, good job,” without sounding patronizing. I gave her a big smile when we passed though.
Being the heavy girl who is trying to get back into running shape, and mostly wants to die on every run I’ve done this year.... it doesn’t sound as patronizing as you think it does. I always appreciate someone’s effort to be kind. And if you have noticed her multiple times, she may recognize that you have seen her progress. Another phrasing idea to maybe emphasize what you are noticing would perhaps be “hey, great progress!”girlinahat wrote: »sorry to disappoint, but we do muggy pretty well here too, so if humidity is a problem, that won't help. When it's cold, it's also DAMP cold. The kind of cold that gets into your bones and the only way our is a long hot bath. This makes minus 14 degrees C in Canada cold feels less cold than zero degrees C British cold.
THIS!!! It’s been 10 years since I studied in Scotland .... Andy the coldest it got while I was there there was ummm -8C or 20F?? And that is still the COLDEST 20 degrees I have ever felt, and that includes 20 degrees with significantly below zero windchills. Like 20 this spring was T-shirt weather.... was NOT T-shirt weather in Scotland.
In other news, I’m still here. Just not feeling particularly social. I have missed a lot here but it makes me happy that you all are here doing awesome things!! I think it was like the 11th before I had a run in for June between laziness and vacation. So, keeping my goal at 50 may still have been overly ambitious. I have also had a few aborted runs from high allergen load and forgetting to predose with inhaler and allergy meds, which didn’t help my mileage.
My weekly PT appointment, that I’ve mostly tried to tell myself was just going to be preventative enough to keep my wonky ankle at a tolerable level of wonky... have actually had some surprising results. Darn ankle went all sorts of swollen over vacation with no running and no major stupidity. And was still pretty bad when pt saw me that week. She did lots of manipulation, cupping, and taping. 2 days later, when the k tape came off.... ankle had NO swelling for the first time In like 3+ years. So, there may be hope for it yet!
So, with today’s dodging lightning treadmill run, I think I am at 19.9 miles/50.
K, now going back into my corner.5 -

This article has one and a lengthy discussion about it that I only glanced at:

(scroll WAY down)
If you just want a chart, this one works, but it is a bit optimistic, IME, and that would especially be so for you since you have not trained much in these conditions:

Sorry I missed this - thank you @rheddmobile. I really feel like I've made a lot of progress and it's exciting. If I can do it, anyone can as I was total noodle arms a year ago.
I will take this opportunity to show proof of me doing the monkey bars! There were no official spartan photos of me at this obstacle - I saw the photographer there was taking a break when I finished and was bummed that I wouldn't have one. But they had a new thing this time where they had video cameras at some of the obstacles and they gave us a personal video that compiled all those together - and it included the monkey bars! Very cool. The video itself is kind of like surveillance video and boring to watch if you aren't the one in it but here's a couple of still shots from it. (I am in the yellow tank, in case that's not obvious)

MOVED! I left yesterday with our girls. Drove about half way, stayed the night in a motel, then came the rest of the way this morning. Currently relaxing on my in laws couch. Hubby wont be coming until tomorrow. I hope he makes it in one day cause I want to do park run on Saturday! If not I'll wait a week. Running hasn't happened in over a week, with being sick and moving. Sigh.10

Got two runs in so far during this hectic week between trips—yesterday I ran again with my colleague (yay!) and then today I did 5 miles after work. The weather has been cool and the runs have been comfortable—I’ve just been a bit preoccupied, but so glad to be able to get these in. Last year I went with another colleague to a running shoe store because she was a little worried to go because she’s overweight. So was I, but I was running more regularly, but I told her that we’d go with my kids and they’d have to be nice to us! We did, and she’s been walking regularly since, so she came by to thank me for inspiring her today. And I pointed another colleague (this one I supervise) to our work gym and locker room, and saw her there today and she was thrilled to have found it—so my little “work wellness” efforts are going well! I credit you all too for providing such a supportive atmosphere here—it just makes me want to spread the support and joy..

How's the weather? Have you frozen solid or been blown off the island yet?1 -
It was absolute heaven to get out for a little run this morning after being sat at my desk for over 12 hours yesterday. Had to laugh at the contrasting reactions for the first 10 minutes or so though: brain was bouncing about like an overexcited joyful puppy going "oooooh sunshine! Fresh air! Ducks! People" while my legs and hips were going "you want us to do what????"
Pure therapy, I took no notice at all of speed, distance, form or really even where I was putting my feet, just enjoyed the views and the movement. One of those runs that just feels good for your soul.
I must say one of the things I enjoy the most about living where I do and running is that when I'm not in the mood I can head up the dirt track by the river and not see many people, but when I am in the mood all I need to do is head for the beach and the tourist watching is hilarious! There was an elderly gent with a pot belly on the gym aparatus on the beach opposite a hotel this morning wearing nothing but a tatty old pair of Y-fronts. He was trying desperately to do a pull-up, bless him.
Legs are a little tight now, I may have investigated a new way of getting over the motorway that involved a couple of unexpected uphill stretches :-)
Ok, back to work, it looks like my desk is going to be my home for the next four days. The joys of being self-employed. Sigh.
June goal: 75km. Run so far: 55.18km

@Avidkeo Excellent!
I am moving right now too. Got everything loaded up last night in the truck with help from people I work with (at old location) and their kids. Old house is cleaned up and the cat is waiting in the last room.l to be emptied. I noticed I forgot to pull out some clean undergarments and socks to wear today and tomorrow. Oh well... I will treat it like when I am backpacking and don't change clothes every day.
There was a snag picking up the truck yesterday afternoon. One of the lights on the tow dolly (to pull my car) doesn't work. I ended up taking the truck to get it loaded and leaving my car/dolly there. I will grab that this morning on the way out of town.
Right now, I just need to get the cat in the truck. He has been given a pill to help calm him. Realtor is scheduled to come in just over 1.5 hrs. so and we can do paperwork to list it and then I leave for good. Between now and then, I will get the cat loaded and try to catch up on social media.
Plan is to drive all day / stop frequently for kitty and I to eat, use bathroom, etc. I will arrive and unload tomorrow. I should have plenty of time to stop and sleep for an hour or 2 here and there along the way.9 -

I’m enjoying the discussion on dry vs wet heat/cold. It definitely has a different feeling ! And it gets to minus 40C here, haha.
It was a cold and miserable rainy run this morning. But as a result, it was a speedy run for me.
Today's run: 4km, 25:51
Distance so far: 32km
June distance goal: 50km2 -

June goal: 75km. Run so far: 55.18km
This is awesome. All of it.
Weeeeelllll maybe not the guy in a "y-fronts" (which I am decidedly not going to google to see what is)1 -
So... my toenail finally decided it was going to fall off. It got to where it was catching on things, and rather than have it get accidentally ripped off, I trimmed most of it off last night. I'm not running until the half marathon on Saturday, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what (if anything) I should do to protect my toe?
Some of you will demand pics, lol. Here you go!It's not too bad, but I'm concerned about it for the race on Saturday.2 -

Absolutely beautiful run this morning! It was a little chilly at about 48F and I debated clothing options. I chose shorts (short tights?) and a medium weight long sleeve, which was good enough. I could have probably gone with long tights but it was nice to be in shorts when I got home. My neighborhood is surrounded by road construction with road closures, so we meandered around that as much as possible. We ended up going on some of the closed roads but so far they've only torn up a bit of sidewalk here and there, so the roads themselves are quite passable. I might have to change up our path more as the summer wears on and they start making progress. Unfortunately that typically means encountering more dogs and people, but we'll figure it out.
I've had my Garmin set to show cadence and HR zone while I run, with an alert if I go above zone 2 and for every half mile (which I might turn off). Today's run ended up with 82% in zone 2, 12% above it... and my third best estimated 5k effort at 35:58.
The Hal Higdon Novice 1 HM plan I'm following has a 5k race scheduled for this weekend. I'm debating running that on my own, just for fun, or doing an easy 6 miles. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to help me decide?3 -
@zeesparrow Hal says on his website 'there's nothing magical about his choice to stick the 5 and 10km races in the plan but they bring some valuable race experience' or something to that effect. He says you don't have to run them and also that they can be at other times. If I remember correctly, I found myself a couple of 'virtual races' to run on my own on those days and just ran a little hard than I would usually during training. But.... you do you ;-)

I ran 6.03 miles this morning. I'm not going to complain about the heat , but I will say it was very hot and humid this morning and it made the run feel really tough. Especially at the start. I did finally kind of settle into it though and it turned out to be a pretty good run. It was a really pretty morning and the sunrise as I was coming up to the park was really lovely. I played Zombie's Run and that's always a lot of fun for me. I got up pretty good this morning too and I got out the door about 10 minutes early so I was able to get in an extra mile. I was glad to get in a nice run this morning. Even though it was pretty humid and already felt pretty warm it was much nicer than it will be later today. The forecast says 103 for the high today. Although I think the forecast said 102 yesterday and we only got to 97 or 98. Summer may not officially start until tomorrow, but it is definitely here.

Yeah, if you were to follow the spirit of the plan, run a 5k at race pace. Personally, I just run that day as any other training run, and I suspect most people do.0 -
@rheddmobile - I didn't feel it was patronizing when other people/runners would tell me 'good job' when I was starting out running. I will often say something like 'looking good' or 'great progress'. There was a guy I used to see walking all the time and we would smile and say hello in passing and one day he was slowly running and I exclaimed - 'Look at you -Running! Yay! Way to go' and he got the biggest smile on his face.
Congratulations @avidkeo on getting moved! Also @midwesterner85 - safe travels to your new destination! Hope the kitty makes it ok too!
@elise4270 - great work at the gym and pool! You know that muscle ton will be back as soon as you are able to do more! It's gonna take time but you will get there, I have no doubt!
@polskagirl01 - someone here recommended these toe covers (@rheddmobile maybe?) and they work great for me. I only use them on my second toe on each foot but I haven't had an issue since using them. It won't help with your immediate need for this weekends race but maybe try putting a bit of medical tape over it or even a bandaid?
@zeesparrow - I think since it is the Novice plan the races are there figuring some who use that plan may not have run any other race before so running a couple of shorter distance races give you the experience so you know what to expect. When I used that plan after my injury I ran a fun (very cheap) 5K on the beach, even though I have run lots of races before, because it fit my schedule. I couldn't find a 10K I wanted to run so just ran the distance on my own.
On the weather discussion - we typically have pretty low humidity (Los Angeles basin is considered desert) so when it is humid we all think we are dieing! Right now though it is what we call June gloom weather. Cool marine layer in the mornings (mid-60's), overcast and even a bit drizzly at times. It clears off mostly by the afternoons and gets warm but not too warm. That will come in August and September. @KatieJane83 - I think you would really like the weather in the Pacific Northwest!
No run for me the last 2 days. Tuesday was incredibly busy, went to a concert downtown that night and didn't get home until very late, actually early Wednesday morning. So no run yesterday either. Will be heading out this morning shortly though and then have strength training this afternoon. Trainer is finally back from vacation! I am going to another concert tonight but it is at a local venue so it shouldn't be as late an evening. Hoping to run again on Friday morning!4 -
Yesterday I got to run 1.76 miles to the gym. I took regular walking breaks and stopped to stretch my shins 3-4 times, but I made it without any significant pain. My calves are sore today, but otherwise, there appear to have been no lasting physical ill-effects. It was my first run in 10 days.
Psychologically, I’m glad I’ve got an appointment with my therapist today, because I’m kind of a ball of nerves. I’ve been fighting with various aches and pains for three months now. I really thought I’d been cautious rebuilding my mileage after all the knee and hip issues in April and May, but immediately after jumping from a 5-mile week to a 10-mile week (and a faster-than average 4.5 miler) here comes the shin pain.
So now I feel like I’m back at ground zero. I was supposed to run a 10 mile race a week from Saturday - I already assumed I’d need to downgrade to 10K, but now I’m thinking I should do the 5K instead. If I run 5 miles this week I can add a mile a week through July and be up to 10K for the race in the first week of August. From there I can stick to the 10% rule (with two big cutback weeks) and should be able to get my long run to 10 miles before the half marathon in September. If nothing else goes wrong.
I think it’s a good plan, but I'm still pretty nervous about getting hurt again. But that's what the therapist is for. I should probably make another PT appointment, too.
