@zeesparrow it's kinda sad but I'm almost afraid to say it, lol. It is my 3rd year in a row attempting to train for my first full marathon! First two attempts I injured myself (different injury, different leg each time, lol). I decided the Philly Marathon was jinxed for me, hence switching it up to MCM. I'm keeping everything crossed that the 3rd time is the charm?
@midwesterner85 super frustrating about the internet/data but YAY for a happy kitty! I hope you get everything else sorted soon!4 -
Morning.
Well was gonna go for another run, but it was chilly, 3 degrees (34f). So am skipping this morning and I'll try go after work. I'm on an early start so should be able to... I'm also going to go to the sports shop on the weekend to get gloves cause running in 8 degrees was a challenge, I think 3 will be awful lol. Im also going to get some earmuffs I HATE cold ears lol.5 -
HI everyone!
I am in for 55 miles again this month.
6/1....4.19 miles (Monon trail)
6/4...6.63 miles ( Monon trail)
6/6...4.24 miles (Monon trail)
6/7...4.24 miles (Monon trail)
6/11...7.76 miles (Monon trail)
6/13....2.02 miles (treadmill)
6/14....4.19 miles (Monon trail)
6/16...2.51 (treadmill)
6/17...4.26 miles (Monon trail)
6/21...8.6 miles (Monon trail). I was increasing my long run by 10% and the first 2 miles running sucked. It started feeling easier after that. Some rain drizzle. The weather has been nice lately, in the 70's, which makes it easier. Was successful in running slowly.
After my run, I stopped at my job to put in a request for a day off. I was hoping not to see anyone but ran into a supervisor who tried to talk me into working. I was exhausted (not from running, but from working 6 out of 8 shifts). So no way. She asked if I had been on a run. I said, "Yes, of course." She looked at me incredulously as if I couldn't possibly be a runner. Such ageism.
6/24....8.57 miles (Monon trail). I decided to run my long run early in the week. (On Thursday I have to not be doing anything cardio for a lab test. I plan to do a lot of organizing that day.) The first half mile felt horrible but then the rest of the run felt great. Still maintaining a specific slow zone. When meeting other runners, I decided to smile and wave at them, which most acknowledged. I think that smiling helps with making the run more enjoyable.
Total....57.2 miles.
Goal....55 miles.
Yay.....met monthly goal! 2 months in a row!

Nominal June mileage goal: 100
Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's notes – Saw today's assignment online before I went to club practice, so I was mentally prepared for it. Ran my 2+ mile warmup, and went out to face the workout for 5K and 1 mile training: 2 sets of 4 x 400 at rep pace w/400 recovery, 4 minutes between sets.
Talked with a couple other club members, and we decided it was a good idea to run a 400 at T pace first to get good and warmed up. That would be a target of 1:38 for me; as usual, the first interval was faster than target at 1:34. Then an easy lap, and into the 4 x 400 with target of 1:26. Ran the first 200 way too fast at 40 seconds, and paid for it on the back half of the lap. First 200 of the other 3 intervals came in right on 43 seconds, again with a slower back half. Brought the 400s in at 1:25.7, 1:27.3, 1:29.0, and 1:29.1. Not a stellar performance, but acceptable for where my conditioning is.
And then I was done. Arguably, I might have been able to physically do the second set after taking 4 minutes of recovery; but I wasn't up to it mentally. I had felt myself going anaerobic late in the 3rd and 4th rep intervals, and I went a bit conservative. Went out and ran my 2+ mile cool down.
This is progress. A week ago, I couldn't manage rep pace at all. Today, I was up to doing half of an admittedly challenging workout. I'll take it.
I've been thinking about running the Firecracker 4 mile on July 4. That's a fun course, and I wouldn't need to kill the time; but I think I'll defer that decision till I see how I feel after Ganondagan. I'm feeling pretty good right now, but I don't want to set myself back before I even start training for New York.

Yeah, I ran and stuff today... BUT MY NEW CAMERA CAME! LOOK AT PRETTY PIXELS:

Stunner of a day here for running this morning, sunny and cold - about 6 degrees so long-sleeve merino and gloves for the top half but shorts for the lower. Dropped the kidlets off at school and did a quickish 4km before yoga - our wednesday yoga class is pretty full on and I've found it's so much better if I arrive warmed up.
In more exciting news, I have signed up with two girlfriends to do a two-day trail marathon at the end of July. Three runs in total: 16km on Saturday morning, 5.1km on Saturday afternoon and 21.1km on Sunday morning. To make it more fun, we're taking a massive motorhome (so no parallel parking then) so will be able to park up and really enjoy the event, with refreshing cold beverages and plentiful snacks to hand.
It's a pretty hokey event. The entry form is hilarious (you can mail your entry in and you can pay by cheque (I don't think anyone in New Zealand has owned a chequebook in the past 10 years)). The entry fee is a *whopping* $35 all up. And the disclaimer has things such as:- "We do not have marshalls on every corner to pander to your every need and tell you porkies about how wonderful you look",
- "This is an off-road forest run and you will need to deal with your demons",
- "Toilets are at the start/finish areas – none on course but bushes galore"

Thanks for the kitty-cat well wishes all! @KatieJane83
Here's an eye update. It looked rather questionable this morning. I am almost convinced it'll make a full recovery. That cloudy spot is tinged pink.
We spent the day getting babied. Then I rearranged the living room so he'll have something new to play on since he's staying in for a while. Rearranged the cat shelves for new running and romping. Least one of us can run.11 -

Beautiful day out there today but awful run. I was terribly sluggish and sore. I’m not too sure why, but I ended up walking more than half of it which felt like a total bummer. I’m hopeful that maybe I’m still sore from the music festival dancing/last week of school and it will improve for the next run.

I ran 5.05 miles this morning. It was tough today. The weather wasn't too different than yesterday, but I felt slow and sluggish the whole time. I had to go in this morning before work for fasting blood work. Usually I just rink a cup of coffee with sugar and half and half before my runs. It's only 70 calories, so I wouldn't have thought it would make that much of a difference, but I guess it did. On the plus side, I decided not to wait until my feet started hurting to order new shoes and I ordered some that should arrive today. I'm going to start rotating my shoes. So hopefully tomorrow I will be trying out the new shoes.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17

@ereck44 - @ddmom0811 posted a long while ago (last year maybe) about an article she read that said smiling when you run makes it easier. I am pretty sure it is hard to think negative thoughts when you are smiling and enjoying your environment!
I'll catch up with everyone else after my run! And yes I plan to be smiling!8 -
I feel silly for posting my ticker but I need the self-motivation. We were away at a music festival all weekend so some of my Friday-->Sunday miles were walking miles. I've had trouble adjusting to the heat and couldn't finish my tempo run yesterday. Better luck today!
7 -
@Elise4270 - Beary cat will have to be an indoor cat and only go out on a kitty leash! Hope he feels better!
@ContraryMaryMary - that 3 day race and staying in a motor home sounds like awesome fun! I want to come too!!
@avidkeo and @midwesterner85 - congratulations getting moved and settled in!
@hist_doc - don't feel silly about posting the ticker, it does give a sense of accomplishment and can show exactly what you need to do to try to meet your goal. For me at least it works much better than just looking at the numbers in my spreadsheet, it can give that kick in the butt I need to get out the door and makes me smile when I know from looking at it that I am oh so close to my goal.
I was already feeling a bit sore from my strength workout yesterday so had little hope for my run today. Besides that, I got out late so it was already getting sunny and warming up. I did want to try to get 6 miles in but gave myself several 'outs' to turn to home if needed. I did not intend to run a tempo run...other than the 1st and last miles I averaged well under a 12 min mile so was pushing it for where I am in conditioning, at least I thought that would be the case. It was easy, and it felt great. My HR did get up high for me on a couple of occasions but I did not notice it as an issue and only saw it after the fact when I got home. I now have that after run, satisfied, tired body feeling with still some, mostly upper body, DOMS from yesterdays workout.

Unplanned rest day today. No injury, just $&#**^% Life Happens stuff.
Today was the rescheduled appointment (originally on a planned rest day) for my cat to have her teeth cleaned. Getting her there in the morning disrupted my normal routine; then I didn't want to run in the morning because I wanted more recovery time after yesterday evening's speed work.
Didn't run in the early afternoon because today also had a podiatrist appointment. That sucks up a lot more time than it should, every time. Then I get home with band-aids on my toes, and I want to let the goop sit a few hours before taking them off.
Didn't run in the late afternoon because I was waiting for the vet to call. Vet called, and I could have run at 5; but I was going to pick my cat up at 6:30, and I didn't want to squeeze in a 6 mile run plus post-run care and feel stressed out. I'll run after I bring her home.
She was slow coming off the ketomine. Had to bring her home, keep her confined, and (because a tooth was extracted) go buy some baby chicken and turkey to feed her until she can have hard food again. So what with one thing and another, no running today.
But at least my cat didn't find any snakes. So it could be worse, I guess.
Pride says make up the missed run on Friday. Wisdom says let it go and move forward, maybe run a little more tomorrow than I would have if I'd got my planned run in today. I'm leaning toward the path of wisdom. Either that, or I'm becoming a wimp.12 -
@kgirlhart The only dog that ever bit me was a little dog too. I think people assume because they are little that they are "cute" and don't have to be taught manners, or anything else for that matter. They also tend to let them run loose more. I'd bet if the owner had a bigger dog, they wouldn't let it run free. It is annoying. Glad you had a nice run.
@Avidkeo That is pretty chili weather. I'm with you, hating to have cold ears! That just makes me miserable.
@PastorVincent Those are some beautiful pixels! What camera did you get? I'm thinking about getting one, as I would love to take a class in wildlife/landscape photography.
@ContraryMaryMary That sounds like a fun outing with your girlfriends!
@zeesparrow That is a gorgeous morning for a run!
@NiigataA Hang in there. Everyone has a bad day now and again.
@MobyCarp I hate days like that. Hope tomorrow is better for you!
I wound up working later than planned today, so didn't have the time for my planned run. But, I was proud of myself for not just blowing exercise off all together and did go for a mile walk. I'm really going to try to get in a little bit of intentional exercise most days. I was going to say "every day," but already know it isn't going to happen on Friday. I'm working at the daycare from 8:30 - 3:30 and then ushering at the baseball game from 4:30 until the game is over. I won't have the time or energy for anything else.5 -

Tonight's speedwork was 4-minute intervals x 5, with 3-minute recovery after the first two and then 90-second recovery after the second two. I did 5 sprints/strides (we are given a range of 4-8). It was really warm and humid and I felt like I was running so slowly. Definitely haven't acclimated to the heat/humidity yet.
I will try to get a short warm-up run in tomorrow morning before strength training and then I'm off to Chicago!6 -

Depending on your budget, this might be way out of your league, or too cheap. For me, it was almost free since I cashed in some investments I had made a long time ago to cover it.
It is a Canon Rebel SL3 DSLR (with 18-55mm Lens) which is currently $650 on Amazon.com
Had I not had those investments, it would have been way out of my league, and now that money is gone, it is way out of my league

Literally had vultures circling overhead as I ran this morning. Then I got almost to my 6+k turnaround point and my stupid shorts started chaffing. Owww. Then the guy mowing between his field and the road stopped to ask if I was a basketball player. "No, I just run..." My brain was confused (What language is he speaking? What did he say? What ball team does he think I'm on? There is no way I look like a high schooler.) Overall it really was a good run, though! Exactly what I needed.
I got a new bike(!) on Saturday and am trying to get back into cycling shape, which meant I missed yesterday's run because an 18-minute ride on the hills around here wiped me out. It's true - you can't just say, "I can run for __ hours, so I should be able to cycle/swim/etc. for an hour no problem". It just doesn't work that way!

@PastorVincent - Beautiful pictures! I wanted the Canon but DH got me a Nikon. I do love it but would really like to take a class in how to use more of the functions. Most all of the pictures I took in NM and AZ on our last trip were with it and they turned out fantastic.
@quilteryoyo - I think your work ushering will give you lots of exercise!
@polskagirl01 - we have vultures that live all along the river where I run. In the summer they sit on the rocks or in the trees and puff out their wings to cool off. I used to worry that they would try to go after Hobbes the Vizsla - I am pretty sure they could carry him away. About the only thing they seem to be afraid of are the ospreys which are quite a bit bigger even.
Speaking of birds I forgot to mention in my post about my run that as we were coming back into my neighborhood I could hear baby birds... We have had a pair of hawks nesting in the trees until last year when one of the hawks was found dead (we though) on the street. I never found out what happened to it but I was told when animal control came out, it wasn't dead so they had one of the rescue organizations come and get it and they were able rehab and release it back into the wild. I am pretty sure the babies last year all died and I wasn't sure if the adults would come back to the same nest so I was surprised to hear them today. I had to stop (standing in the street looking up at the tree for a long while!) and search the tree and there were both mom and dad tending to a nest of what looked like 3 very hungry babies! Yay! I have also noticed a sharp decrease in the squirrel activity lately! Another Yay!8 -
3.1 tempo run on the Greenway followed by a 3.25 mile walk in the dusk. This was sort of a test drive to figure out how hard I want to run the Stars and Stripes 5k next week if we enter. This 5k is the big finale for the local road race series and all the fast people show up - last year I don’t think I was even in the top half of my age group. So no real chance of a podium finish, the only person I need to beat is me. Last year I honestly thought I might pass out during the race due to the heat - the hair on my arms was standing up and I was getting goosebumps, which is a sign that your heat regulation is starting to get whack. This year so far I have been acclimating much better. But pushing it in the afternoon heat I still end up with positive splits - my legs, heart and lungs could keep going if my radiator worked better! I need giant ears like a Fennec Fox!
Anyway we did bring it in at 29 minutes with the first mile under 9 and pace gradually dropping after that. And I feel like maybe if I got one of those ice things that sit on your back we could have done the whole thing in 9 minute pace. Has anyone had experience with running with any of those ice hats, ice neck wraps, etc.?
By the way, I checked the weather history after we got home and the dewpoint when we ran was as high as I’ve ever seen it here - 78. No wonder I was wringing wet. Temperature 97.
We saw yet another bunny, which makes four runs in a row of seeing bunnies. This one was sitting right on the path watching us go by without a care. And we rescued a huge millipede from being run over by a bicycle. And listened to some song sparrows. Oh - and I looked up the unusual owl call we heard on our last run. Turns out it was Barred Owls after all, but the song we heard is their courting duet! They make a crazy cackling noise. If anyone is interested, the Cornell bird site has tons of stuff about owls.

I'm finding it relatively easy to get back in to a running/gym routine, but less easy to remember to check/post on the forum!
The only downside has been my Strava app playing up on my last 2 runs outside. It could be the GPS dropping out but I've run the same route many times without issues. Looks fine when I hit the 'finish' button then I get a completely different set of data - It's making it difficult to keep track of miles/pace. I might have to switch to a new app just to make my life easier.7
