Morning all!
Gah been crazy and lazy so haven't been running. Managed 3 times this week, I guess that's part of being on track. Oh if I run tomorrow that will be 4 times haha.
Did a Parkrun this morning, loved it. I'm going to volunteer every second week, to get involved and hopefully make some friends.
Now sitting on the couch with 2 sick kids while hubby has some alone time to go shopping etc.
Oh BIG NEWS! our house sold! We got what we wanted so yay! Now we get to house hunt. We offered on one place but the vendors decided to remove it from the market instead. Not sure what's going on there but what ever. It was the perfect house, in the perfect location, but neither of us were attached to it. Does that make sense. I feel like I should be more disappointed but despite being the perfect house, it didn't make us excited?

Hit the treadmill after work. It was kind of hard today. My legs felt kind of heavy but I pushed through and got it done.

@shanaber I wish the fireworks were over! Ugh. We'll have all weekend of it. Least it scares the cats bad enough I don't have to fight beary to stay in. I gave him some packing paper and he's pushing it I'll over the floor around the house. Haha!
DH and I made a short walk. I wanted to do another 2 miles, but decided 0.75 would suffice. It was hot and the hip continues to stiffen up.5 -

Cracker morning here - cold and clear. I ran the long way to yoga (about 2.5km) and an even longer way home (4km) and would have loved to have carried on because sunshine, but I had to be home by a certain time. Long run scheduled for tomorrow, and the forecast it the same. However, I will be wearing gloves - 4 degrees celsius is rather nippy!6 -
Oh, I've also been invited to join a group of 11 in a house for the Taupo marathon/half/10k. They've rented a six bedroom, 6 bathroom place and have a spare room. They also have a formal dinner, complete with fancy dress, on the Saturday night after the event and the whole thing sounds like enormous fun. Problem is, it's the weekend after my girls' weekend away to do the three pigs two-day marathon. I'm not worried about my legs, I worried about how I'm going to convince my husband and children that mummy NEEDS two weekends away in a row...

Finally joining in for July! I managed 3 runs in New Zealand, which wasn’t bad considering a really packed work schedule. And even got some mountain biking in with some online friends I’ve known for 16+ years and never met. We ended up going to Rotorua because they were coming from Palmerston North, and I was coming from Hamilton, and their kids like to go mountain biking in Rotorua. Thanks so much to @ContraryMaryMary for the great suggestions and intel.. I also successfully navigated about 300 roundabouts driving on the left (my true success!)
The first two runs were close to Hamilton, the city where my conference was, but for my long run I went to a rail trail through the Karangahake Gorge, which was lovely.
And one of those runs, the 10-miler, just happened to be on the 1st, so a great July start! Then I ran another 5 miles here on the 4th, and that was really lovely. Both were probably in the 60s—in NZ it’s winter (but I ran in the afternoons) and here it doesn’t usually heat up until later in the summer, so it’s staying cool. So everyone, quick, fly out here for nice cool & comfortable runs before the wildfire season starts and it gets smoky!
So in any case, by being able to maintain running while traveling for most of the month, I blew 15 miles past my safe 60-mile goal, so I think I’ll shoot for 80 miles this month. That would be my all-time high if I make it! I did drop any plans for the late July sprint triathlon, though—too complicated to train for, and while I didn’t have any really sleep-disrupting jetlag, I’m definitely not 100% back mentally. Seems fine to run on half a brain, though..

Great work, I was actually thinking about you on my run this morning and wondering how you were got on over here. I'm thrilled you got a few runs in (and bike rides). And great photos - that's the New Zealand I know and love. Karangahake Gorge is stunning.1 -
@Avidkeo yay! Great news about sale and stuff. Not so great about sick kids or other house, but that probably means it wasn't really right for you. There was probably a body under the patio or something.

Packing and preparing to leave for Madrid. Feels strange not to have a child (albeit a sulky teenaged child who spends all day shut in her room) about the house, think I could get used to this lol!7 -

It stormed last night and is overcast today, so it is a humid mess outside, but I completed 4.2 this morning for a total of 10.2 so far for July.
I joined the local She Runs This Town. I hope I can meet a few more locals to run with me.4 -

I was born there in Burbank, but left for Texas when I was 9. Only remember going through one earthquake while we lived there. But it was scary for a little kid.
14 miles this morning. Was nasty hot and humid. Broke out my hydration vest that I haven't used in over a year. Was uncomfortable at first, then I guess I got used to it. Was nice to take a sip every mile or so, but right at mile 14 it ran out. Don't think I drank it all, because I kept feeling it dripping after I would take a drink. Like the bite valve wasn't fully closing. So it leaked until the tube was empty. Oh well, better than the two 6oz. bottles in my hydration belt. Oh, and I only had 1 Gatorade chew. When I went to get the second one, thee whole pack was gone! It somehow fell out of my flipbelt 😠
And... I was sneezing all day yesterday. Took an allergy pill when I got home from work, but it didn't help. So thought maybe it was the start of a cold, so took some cold medicine before I went to bed. Woke up feeling really groggy, and didn't know if I should run, even as I was lacing up my shoes. But after a couple miles, head cleared. I am convinced that running heals most ailments 😆

Well, I'm 5 days and 8 pages behind. Sorry I just can't seem to find the time to check in on a regular basis like I really want to. You guys are so great and I love reading about your accomplishments and even the struggles. Those give me hope and inspiration to keep going when I want to give up. I'm hoping that my schedule will calm down a little bit next week, but, then, I am going to go to Wisconsin for a wedding at the end of the month and have family coming in the day I get home from that. So, a hectic, but fun month.
Anyway, I am going to shoot for 30 miles this month. I managed to get 35 in last month.
And now for some exciting news. At least it is for me. I'm not sure why, but am practically giddy over the fact that I signed up for a virtual race this morning. I've been struggling to find a 10K race I can do on my 60th birthday - to repeat what I did on my 50th birthday (my first race ever). I had resigned myself to doing an 8K midnight run on August 3/4th, but hadn't signed up for it yet. Good thing, because my step-daughter has chosen that weekend to come for a visit. In fact, she will be here the day I get back from a wedding in Wisconsin. She told me to not change my plans, but I don't want to be away for an entire night when she and the granddaughters are here. So, today, I signed up for the Virtual Strides One Small Step 10K. It is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on July 20th and part of the proceeds goes to the Astronauts Memorial Foundation. I do plan to run it on the 20th, weather permitting. I think part of the reason I am so excited is that it just feels right since my deceased husband worked on the Apollo program and I worked at Cape Canaveral when I was in the Air Force. In fact, that is where we met. He passed away on July 22, 2006 - so that adds to the appropriateness for me. I just need to get in some runs between now and then. Lately, I've been doing a whole lot more walking that I am running. I know I can do that distance, even if I have to walk a lot of it, but would prefer to have a decent time. I think my original 10K was just a little under 1 hour and 15 minutes. I would love to beat that time, but will be happy if I am somewhere close to that.

@Teresa502 Congratulations! Sounds like you did great and love the pancake breakfast afterwards. It is odd that those who were waiting on the parade wouldn't offer a cheer. Surely they knew it was a race and not just a bunch or people out for an early morning run. LOL Weird.1 -

Hot and humid run this morning with friends, just to get it done. Then I quickly showered, changed, had some Gatorade and a snack, and went to the gym for a workout challenge my trainer was hosting. I did 10 more minutes on the treadmill to (re) warm up.
The challenge was as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 45 minutes of cardio, 50 dips, 50 TRX or inverted rows, 50 burpees, 50 wall ball shots, 50 prisoner lunges each leg. Cardio was a choice of 805 m rowing, 1/2 mile running, or some amount on the Jacob's Ladder. I chose rowing. We made a mark for each set of 10 of each exercise (so 5 marks each per round) and the goal was to get through at least 1 1/2 rounds for those of us doing it for the first time and for those who had done it the first time around Memorial Day (I was out of town so missed this), to beat their previous record. I ended up completing 2 full rounds, plus an additional round of rowing and 10 dips. So, a total of 2415 m rowing, 110 dips, 100 rows, 100 burpees, 100 wall ball shots and 100 lunges each leg (200 total). OMG, so tiring. We'll have another challenge around Labor Day to see how much we can improve.
Afterwards, he had another group and was setting up a practice hoist again for Spartan training with weighted boxes to be able to push off on with your legs (like the fences at the Spartan race). So I stayed and tried that a few times before I left. It was 77 lbs of sandbag to hoist - which is a little heavier than the official Spartan weight for women of 70 lbs (but it can vary). My hands are now all blistered and sore from the rope, but I did it.
I am now crawling into bed for a nap. I'm hoping the forecasted thunderstorms are coming soon for a break in the heat/humidity and so the dog doesn't want to go out for a walk any time soon.

In case you were wondering... If you could look at the sun right now, it would look something like this. We are in a solar minimum right now, which means no sunspots or really much of anything to see. The couple of dark patches are dirt on the lens. The sun is currently featureless. Clouds moved in before I could clean and reshoot.

Did a treadmill run today because it was rainy, humid, and hot outside. I did 3 miles in 37:23 minutes, for a 12:28 per mile pace. I know that is slow for a lot of you, but pretty good for me.
I journal. Everyday. So, I went back and found the journal entry for the race I did 10 years ago. I completed the 10K in 1 hour, 16 min, and 59.9 seconds. LOL I'm pretty sure I can match that in two weeks. I hope so anyway. BTW, 10 years ago I ran the race on August 2nd, two days before my 50th birthday; putting me in the 49 age group. I had noted that had it been after my birthday, I would have gotten a prize because there were no women over 49 in the race.13 -
So, I have been working on running two days in a row and then having a rest day - limiting the number of consecutive runs. When I chose 120 miles as my limit for the month, I had not actually looked at the calendar to verify how that would work out. Now that I've given it a little more attention, I see that I'll need to stop trying to push every run to 6 miles. Makes sense logically. This could work out to my benefit. But I also want to consider getting back up to Half Marathon distances, so next month will have a higher cap.
Just to show how hard it can be to limit myself, though - I was really shooting for 7 miles, but I just couldn't hold the pace that I had chosen for another full mile. The sixth mile was a challenge. I decided to stop rather than "spoil" the pace by running the last mile slower. Reminder to myself and anyone else who needs to hear it: Not every run should be a race.

Thanks for the thoughts on those of us in So Cal. The earthquake on the 4th hit while I was putting on my sunscreen and I thought I was getting sick/dizzy until I saw the door swinging and realized what was going on. We are far enough away that it just felt like a slow roller and we pretty much immediately knew it was a bigger quake somewhere and were glad it wasn't in the urban areas along the San Andreas. We were at the Hollywood Bowl last night when the 7.1 hit and it was much stronger as you can imagine and we were also a bit closer to the epicenter. However that quake was also felt all the way to Reno and Phoenix! They are saying the 6.4 on the 4th was a 'pre-quake' to the 7.1. I don't know how they determine one from another other than the timing but to be and I am sure the folks right there, a quake is a quakes and the size is important. Unfortunately with the 7.1 there was considerable damage to homes and businesses and the hospital there had to be evacuated. On the other side I haven't heard of any serious injuries thank goodness.

@katharmonic - marine layer is so common here I never thought about someone not knowing what it is... For us it is like thick clouds that come in off the ocean, typically at night and burning off in the morning. Depending on where you are it can last all day and may result in drizzle especially the closer you are to the beach. It also keeps it nice and cool into the morning so if you can get out early it is perfect for running. As soon as it starts to burn off though the temps go right up.
@Lazy_Bones_85 - congratulations on finishing well in such brutal conditions! Ugh - I just can't imagine running that hard in the heat and humidity!

So my run yesterday was supposed to be 30 mins of tempo + 1 mile WU and CD. I had my timer set for 10min easy, 15 min build and 5 min easy once I got to the trail. After the 10min easy I kept waiting for the midpoint of the build and never heard it so just kept trying to build. Never heard the end of that interval either and finally stopped to check it. Even with walking a bit during the build interval to get my HR down from the high 130's I thought, I pushed it way too hard... as evidenced by my very (too) high HR! Yes, I was running hard, knew my HR was up but it didn't really feel that bad. So I was shocked to see when I got home that it hit 193! Yikes! I have never seen it that high and 150 is supposed to be my max per the cardiologist. I did check the actual data from the HR monitor to see if it was something with the monitor losing connection and the watch misreading but there is HRM data at/near that level for about 2 minutes. I guess that means my cardiovascular system is not quite back to where I should be yet.
So today I had a 6 mile run on the plan but between that run yesterday and being out late at the concert last night I decided to pass on the run and give myself a recovery day. We leave on a road trip tomorrow morning so likely no run for me until Monday.

Hi I'm completely new to running and have no idea what distance I should be starting with or how many days a week I should be running. I'm not completely unfit but I'm also not a consistent exerciser. Any advice warmly welcome 😁 . Starting with my first run tomorrow11

Take it slow. Take walk breaks. And don't get discouraged at what you can't do. Look forward to what you will be able to do if you make it a habit. Be proud of every step.
I set my goal in time not distance. I wanna run/walk 30 minutes. Then found it was more like 15 minutes... Haha! Just find your starting point.3 -
It’s been an enjoyable week so far. Last week saw a sign for a 4 mile race on the 4th. The day prior to it, my daughter who was going to do the 2 mile walk with her cousin and grandma, announced she would do the 4 mile with me if I walked. I couldn’t pass up that opportunity, so we had a great time walking and running using cones, electrical poles, and mailboxes. It was a cooler start to the day and we originally thought it was going to be a lake day, but realized it was a good day for a long run.

today was sooo slow and when you are already slow, well its not great. Nevemind. Putting this down to the muggy weather, the rain and the article I read today about the jogger who slipped over, broke her ankle and ended up losing her leg.
