Tonight's workout was an inverted ladder of 3-2-1-1-2-3 minute intervals, with 2 minutes recovery between the first two, and 90 seconds recovery for the rest. Plus 4 sprints. We also did 10 minutes w/u and c/d. A lot of the fastest people in the group were not there tonight so I felt a bit more "out front" than usual, which actually pushed my pace a little bit. I stopped my watch during the recovery between intervals and Garmin generously thinks I had PRs for 1k, 1mile, and 5k distances tonight. I refused those "awards" but will hold that praise in my heart A few recovery intervals during a 5k might be a nice idea!7 -

My adult daughter decided to join my for my training run tonight. She is more accustomed to running shorter distances (usually around 2 miles on a treadmill) but generally at a faster pace than I do. It was 93 F outside at sunset when we got started and extremely humid. We deliberately ran through some sprinklers closer to the end of our run. That was fun. We chatted while we ran and she mentioned that she was surprised by my endurance. I took that as a strong compliment since I still consider myself somewhat of a beginner. Tomorrow is likely a rest day for me but I’m watching the weather to see how the rest of the week pans out.11 -
@martaindale - I did not know that about redheads. Guess it explains why I feel so hot at 75 and so cold at 72 😂
I also have a ton of red (probably all gray now if I let it be) curly hair that I have finally come to terms with and just let it be curly. My daughter was a massive amount of hair that grows so fast. She shaved her head once to donate for cancer patients and it was down almost to her waist at the time. It grew back so fast though.
We are in Healdsburg, CA this week and I ran this morning to check out the area. I really wanted to see if I could get to the Russian River. It was a lovely cool (56F when I left the hotel) sunny morning and off Hobbes and I went with a general idea of where to go. I had found some race courses through the area that were put on by a local run club so kind of pieced together a route. I did find the river, a lovely park with a beach and swimming area in the river then ran through downtown, stopped by the local run store and found the Rail Trail that took me right back to the hotel. Below are some pictures from the sights along the way. I am hoping to get a similar run in on Wednesday and probably Friday before we leave and then run my longer planned run at home on Sunday instead of Saturday. After the run DH and I took Hobbes back downtown to walk around, shop a little (got a Healdsburg RC hat) and have lunch at a local brewery (burger and a local brewed beer - yum!).Date........Miles.......Total

Just like Elise4270 said above... take it slow but try to keep it consistent. 2 weeks is all it takes to form a habit. Fellow n00b and hence we're in the same boat Let's keep each other motivated

I am impressed daily by my TX people out running in the heat. You guys are tough!! I'm going to blame my red hair. Apparently the MC1R gene that gives hair the red hue also has been linked to temperature sensitivity, with redheads feeling both hot and cold temperatures more extremely than non redheads. It also means we need less Vitamin D, have a higher pain tolerance, and require more anesthesia/sedation.
I didn't know that about redheads. Interesting, might explain why my ginger daughter is complaining so much about the heat this year!
I was surprised in Madrid at the weekend at the amount of people I was seeing out running in the middle of the day. In 37ºC heat. I must say though, the humidity levels are so much lower there (25% or so compared to 80% or so on average here) that I found it easier to cope with than at home. As long as I didn't stand in direct sunlight, which was kinda like standing under a laser or something. Wouldn't have even dreamed of trying to run in the middle of the day though!
The concert, before anyone asks, was AWESOME! Jon Bovi Jovi's voice may not be what it was when he was young, but 55,000 of us couldn't have cared less, in fact you could hardly hear him singing anyway.... we all sang most of the songs for him :-D But the show those guys put on is amazing, and if I have half that Jon's energy at 57 I'll be more than happy! They played my favourite song.... I might have cried a little bit.
I had promised the legs 3 rest days while we were away, but what with all the walking and jumping up and down/dancing at the concert they weren't happy. We got back late last night and I'm exhausted still, but needed to get out this morning for some humid, fresh air and to test the new shoes out before I put them back in the box to wait until the current ones need to retire. I struggled a lot with the dry air and constant air conditioning in Madrid, so this morning's run ironically made me feel I could breathe again! Now to catch up with work and come to terms with the fact that it's over
July goal 85km. Run so far: 29.20km8 -
@eleanorhawkins Glad your Bon Jovi concert lived up to your expectations! Happy for you that you got to go. Just so happens that we are going to a Bon Jovi concert next week (tribute band) 😁5

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Interval training today: warmup; 5 sets of 6 minutes hard/2 minutes easy; followed by cooldown. Mostly cloudy and 60 degrees F made for good running weather. I was much happier with today's intervals than I was with last week's intervals. My body knows I can't run hard intervals 2 days after a race; it just needs to tell my brain.

08 July - 1.4 miles (treadmill)
Total to date: 7.1 miles
Hoping to get up early tomorrow to get my run in as I'm busy after work. Hope everyone is well!

I can't recall the last time I ran 7 miles - probably late 2017. 2018 was rough all the way through, and I'm still not over whatever my knee started doing on Thanksgiving. It doesn't seem to get worse with running, though, and I've even seen the Orthopedic Doctor to make sure there wasn't a structural issue. I can't say I've been great with the PT exercises, but there wasn't really a solid diagnosis. I don't know if I articulated it properly, but I expected him to be able to tell if there was something torn or broken in there. He gave it a good poke and took some x-rays, and nothing in particular looked wrong. Strangely enough, it hurts the most while swimming - and I wasn't doing any of that in November...
All of that is by way of me saying I had a good run. Ran it faster than I meant to, and will probably push even harder too soon. But it was awesome, and I missed that.

7/9: 6.23 miles

Today's run was 6.23 miles. All in all it was a nice run. It was humid and hot at 5:55 am with a temperature and feels like temp of 74°F with 92% humidity and a dew point of 71°. But we are under a heat advisory for today with heat index temperatures expected to be between 105° and 111° so I figured as miserable as the weather was this morning, it would only be worse later. I did enjoy the run though. I was chased by a couple of little dogs whose owner came out on the porch and yelled at them. It did no good, but I just ran faster and called to her that I carry pepper spray and if her dogs bit me I would spray them. Sometimes with dogs like that though I am as worried that they will trip me as much as bite me. They were a nuisance, but not really a threat. A couple of blocks later I was able to run through some water sprinklers and that always helps. And the sun was pretty coming up and I saw hummingbirds at the park. So despite the weather I had a great run. I really do enjoy getting out there and starting the day off with a run.
Re: the talk about Texans running in the heat. I'm also in Texas and while I will do my share of complaining about the heat, I would rather run in the heat than when it is really cold. Anything under about 38°F is too cold for me and I am always surprised at how many people will get out and run in that kind of cold. I always expect to be hot and sweaty, but cold and sweaty is just weird to me.
@katharmonic That Tomatan is hilarious. I love tomatoes, but I never thought about using them for fuel on a run!
@simcon1 The pictures from your trip are gorgeous. I'm always kind of jealous of the runners in New Zealand. It is so cool that you were able to run while you were there.
@shanaber The pictures from your run look awesome too. And Hobbes looks so sweet sitting patiently by the table.
@minniemouse0209 Since you are just starting to run I would also suggest that you look at something like the C25K app to get started. And remember that for most people it will get you to running 30 minutes straight, not necessarily a 5K in 30 minutes.
@eleanorhawkins I'm glad you had fun at the Bon Jovi concert! I'm officially jealous!
@AlphaHowls Just wow! 435 days. I don't know how you do it!

Hi friends. I joined a gym in the end of May and a friend and I are trying to go to a kickboxing class every Tues & Thurs, so I felt okay just doing 1 mile today, because it will be a serious workout later. (I also conveniently overslept... ahem).
We're all starting to sound like a broken record here... but I *also* did not know that about redheads!
Seriously impressed with the mileage you guys are racking up!

Another treadmill warm-up this morning, although I really should have run outside because the weather was so nice at that early hour. I just don't like running the roads by the gym, there is too much traffic and the shoulders are not wide enough (and no sidewalks). I felt sore getting started after the last few days of activity but loosened up a bit during the run.
Circuit training was a lot of core and legs today, with some pull-ups thrown in. That's enough legs for this week, for sure, as I have the Boilermaker 15k on Sunday. I'll be taking it easy for the next few days. The forecast for Sunday is looking quite a bit better heat-wise so I'm keeping my fingers crossed not to have another oppressively hot race day. But you know, it's July, and it's called the Boilermaker, so it would not be too surprising.4 -
Met a friend and ran around the lake where she lives for 12k today. It was really hilly and a bit fast for me, but I felt better pretty quickly after we stopped, so I guess I wasn't THAT wiped out
Then I jumped in the lake with my running clothes on.
July goal 100 miles
I might bike later, just for fun13 -
Today I got to run 3.12 miles in the morning before work. The weather was as good as it’s been in a while, with a lovely little breeze coming off of the lake. I’m still struggling with pain in my right calf, but so long as I stop and stretch it out, it seems fine. It’s not every single step the way it was a few weeks ago, so that's an improvement for sure.
Also, we discovered a few days ago that my husband finds the sound of my yoga videos incredibly relaxing so now he's been encouraging me to do more yoga in the evenings, which kind of cracks me up. ASMR was mentioned, which I had to look up but apparently involves a pleasant physical sensation on hearing certain sounds, including soothing voices, and is related to synesthesia, which my husband also has (music/color). Maybe I'll even convince him to try some yoga one of these days!
ETA: I just registered for the Labor Day 5K I've been planning for when my dad and step-mom are in town, so there's another one on the books! I really hope I'm at a point to race for a PR then, but either way, it will be fun to have a larger cheering squad than usual.

July 1....4.26 miles (Monon trail)
July 2....4.66 miles (Monon trail)
July 5...4.17 miles (Monon trail).
July 6....2.03 miles (treadmill).
July 8...5.22 miles (Monon trail)....Just finished work and the weather was a cool 70 degree. I know it is not going to last long. I was tired but determined to run an extra mile today. It went well. Where I parked are beautiful wildflowers which are actually taller than me and one of these days I am going to figure out how to download pics and you will be able to see them. Only critter I saw was a grasshopper clinging to my windshield.

@polskagirl01 Love the jumping in the lake bit... I'm getting tempted to do that at the beach I run beside after long runs, but the thought of then running or walking home in soggy salty clothes puts me off lol
@PastorVincent I hope sunscreen was involved in the obtention of the olive colour!
Friendly reminder to fellow runners... use your kitten cream and don't get burnt!
Legs are going to get their rest day today, poor things really need it. We're heading up to the village house with friends at the weekend, and I don't feel like getting up at 6am to do my long run up there (plus, it's on the side of a mountain) so guess I'll be doing that tomorrow. Shhh, don't tell the legs!

5k at WC Johnson park, started just after sundown and finished in solid darkness. We are under a heat advisory today and tomorrow - heat index was officially supposed to hit 109, and when I checked the nearest station in the middle of the afternoon it said 115. I’m guessing the sensor was in the sun or something, and it wasn’t quite that hot, but it was pretty hot. We drive past a car dealership with a giant flag, and the flag was hanging completely limp. Off and on lukewarm rain plus heat lightning. The humidity made the park feel downright prehistoric, surrounded by water plants and giant insects. We saw two deer, about five bats, and a billion gnats, which seem to have as their life goal flying into my sweat and getting stuck.
Not a bad run all things considered. My husband has announced that he prefers runs to have a change of scenery about once every mile. More often and it makes the run seem longer because he can’t let his mind wander, less often and it makes the run seem longer because he gets bored. This run suits that theory perfectly - the boardwalk minus our warmup is exactly one mile, around the lake one and a half times to the turn off is exactly one mile, out across the deer pasture to the edge of the woods is about three quarters of a mile, which means if you turn around at the edge and head back, 3.1 leaves enough for a cool down walk.
I’m happy with our newly discovered burger joint - it’s open late enough for us to go there after a sunset run, and lets us sit on the patio so we don’t freeze in our wet clothes. Plus there is never anyone out there so we don’t have to worry about offending anyone with our sweat. They will cheerfully make any sandwich as a lettuce wrap, and they have healthy stuff like vegetables and grilled fish should I decide not to eat all the French fries in the world. However, today I ate all the fries.8 -
I’m super impressed with all the running in the heat! We are still pretty chilly here, with highs in the low 70s, and now it’s unseasonably rainy too. Good for gardens & the watershed, but we’re just wondering where summer is. We went for a hike on Sunday, and the top (a ridge) was so windy and chilly I had on a technical T, long sleeve hiking shirt, a fleece, a puffy down coat, and gloves—and I hiked 2.5 miles of the way back down before I warmed up enough to take off even one layer.. here’s a photo of my daughter in the wind:
On the running front, I did a quick two miles today in some drizzle. I’m hoping to do a longer run tomorrow, and then I had forgotten that I have to go do a workshop in LA on Thursday, so I’m just trying to figure out the week (and still a bit exhausted from all the work travel in the past month, so not really keen to get on a plane!) And then maybe it will be summer when I get back...

Soooooo tired. It's been a brilliant week, been on my own to all sorts of different areas on my own. I've pretty much been on my feet for 3 days and loving it!
I took a rest day today and kinda glad I did. I'm exhausted haha. But will do another 5k or so tomorrow.
I've been loving work, does it show?11
