Didn't post here yesterday about the culmination of the 15k training plan (that turned out to actually be a 9 mile training plan) that I had been following for a couple of months. I had planned that final 9 miler for the weekend, but we're heading out to the village in the mountains with friends for the weekend and I didn't want to have to get up at 6am to get it done, so switched it to Thursday. Now, 9 miles may not seem much, and it may not seem like it would take too long for the faster runners here, but I was expecting it to take me over 2 hours. It actually took me around 1 hour 57 minutes to cover 14.58km.
I'd been sticking to the seafront promenade for my long runs recently as I'd been experimenting with fueling and wanted to stay somewhere where there were bathrooms nearby in case the gels didn't agree with me, but as I'd had no issues and was getting fed up dodging slow moving tourists I decided to head inland for the riverside trail.
Scared a rabbit soon after I hit the dirt track, and the silly creature ran ahead of me for probably a kilometre or so before finally realising it could head down the bank and get away from me. Kept my mind entertained while the horrible slow first kilometre thing got done anyway. I don't know why, especially as my physio insists I walk for at least 10 minutes to start warming up before running, but my first km is REALLY slow and tough atm. Oh well.
About half an hour in I had half an isotonic gel, and things were going great until I went to pull the other half out of my pocket 15-20 minutes later and discovered that the little energy bar thing I had taken to scoff down at the half way mark had fallen out of my pocket. The utter despair over that and thinking about the fact that I'd had nothing but a banana and a gel and I was in the middle of nowhere kept my mind occupied until about km 10, when I started groping about in the back pockets of my belt hoping to find a lost jelly baby or something and there was the energy bar!!! D'oh, I had put it in a back pocket and for some reason forgotten doing it. Joyful reunion time! I must also admit here that I put a lot of thought to what state would be ok to eat it in if I found it on the floor on my way back. Car run over it but packet seems still sealed if a little squashed? Edible! Damp or smelling of dog pee? Hmm..... I guess that's where I would have seen how desperate I was LOL.
Anyway, I survived and the legs aren't feeling too bad at all today considering. Now to take a few weeks to transition back to 4 runs per week in preparation for starting HM training.
AND.... here comes the super wonderful exciting part... and proof of how awesome this group is: as of this morning I am the proud owner of a 2nd hand Garmin thanks to @noblsheep !!!!! I've spent most of the morning playing with it instead of working and can't wait to take it out for a test run in the morning! Had to give myself a firm talking to about how my legs need a rest day after the long run yesterday and persuade myself I can wait until the morning! Might just end up getting up at 6am anyway in excitement lololol.

Partly cloudy, mid 60s F, and a light breeze today that managed to find me to cool me off no matter what direction I was running. All is good.

I was planning to take a rest day yesterday (Thurs), and then work completely blew up in my face - just a nightmarish day and I got home super late but with too much energy, so I went for a quick 1 mile and some extra walking to get in my steps. I was proud of myself for pushing to 10k steps - all last year I was on a crazy streak of days hitting my goal (285 in a row!), but fell out of the habit around March this year (new job, moved to a new city - it happens).
Today will be the rest day, unless something else goes wildly wrong!

Way to go @eleanorhawkins on that 9 mile long run, and getting through the panic of losing your fuel. On Saturday I opened up a new package of chews, took one at about mile 3, then when it came time to grab another, I discovered the entire package fell out of my belt somewhere along the route. Had to go the last 9 miles without anything. Yes it sucked.
And great big props to @noblsheep for sending your gently used Garmin to @eleanorhawkins. This group is amazing!7 -

Well, I managed half of my intentions well. I got the 7 miles done. I didn't keep it down to 11:15's, though. I ran the first 5 miles at 10:55 and then decided to push harder for the last 2 miles, for an average of 10:48 per mile. I can't decide if I'm disappointed or proud. Some crazy mix of both.

Yesterday was a much-appreciated rest day. I did stop at the gym to sit in the hot tub and sauna for a while and walked the dog. This morning was MUCH cooler and it was so nice to go out for my warm-up run in 66 degree weather. It started sprinkling a bit at the end and even that felt good. I managed to leave myself enough time to get a little over my minimum of 3 miles in this time before strength training. We did quite a bit of arm work in strength training today, including work with the mace and some more sandbag hoisting.

Have to cancel my run today, bah. I think I got bad food at lunch. Either way... 13 miles away from a toilet would be a bad plan right now.9

Good speed work. I think last week I made it from my bedroom into the bathroom in 1.74935 seconds. Feel better.5 -
My husband joined me at the gym today. The weather has been really rough, bad enough to make him consider using a treadmill. He gets nervous on a treadmill. He runs sort of looking towards his feet or has to hold on to look up. The gym I use has a 3 day trial so he signed up for that to try it out and see if it was worth the money for him.
We are both doing a HM training plan and today was 6 miles. He struggled through 5 miles then declared that, no it wasn't. He has decided to instead wake up even earlier to run before the heat of the day sets in.
I did my 6 miles, purposely taking the pace down a notch. I am competitive with myself and on a treadmill where the numbers are so visible I'm always trying to "beat" what I have done before. Outside I tend to go more on feel. I know I need to slow down and pushing the pace on these longer runs isn't doing me any favors. As a result, today's run was much less painful. Lesson learned. Maybe. I might have to remind myself of that one a few more times.

3.4 night miles at WC Johnson park. Was planning on doing 5 but my calf started tensing up and making my Achilles’ tendon ache, and it seemed the better part of valor not to risk reinjuring it so we walked back. Running in dim light it seems I can’t completely relax because the ground isn’t predictable and the muscle tension does a number on my joints.
Also, the humidity is grim. My husband compared it to opening the dishwasher to check if he remembered to turn it on and getting a blast of hot wet air in the face that fogs his glasses up.
But at least it’s not flooding! The edge of Barry is supposed to start catching us with heavy rain in the next few days, hope everyone out there is safe.8 -
@martaindale The treadmill is hard to get used to. At least the DH is out running and you have that to do together. I have a hard time slowing down as I know I should too. I so want to be a faster runner.

On my 34th anniversary, my wife's gift to me was to allow me to run 15 miles this morning. It was a good run, up until I swallowed a big gnat. It is a normal occurrence, and it seemed to go down normally, but still felt it in the back of my throat. Took a few sips of water and thought it was good. But then I felt it coming back up! 😝
Kept coughing to try to get it out, but just kept getting worse, like I couldn't breathe. People on the trail kept looking at me funny and asked if I was alright. Finally had to stop and take a big drink. That finally washed it down.
Not my finest moment 🤪

Happy anniversary @Scott6255! I had the same kind of thing happen with a bug during speedwork a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't stop coughing, like that thing was trying to claw it's way back out. I think everyone thought I was faking to get out of running the interval Which yes, I was more than happy to stop and walk a bit while I struggled with a bug in my esophagus. Just go down!

An easy run with the group this morning - a lovely 70 degrees and a nice shady trail made it very pleasant. A few of us are running the Boilermaker 15k tomorrow so it was nice and slow. I feel much more recovered from all the soreness of earlier in the week. I'm hoping for an equally good weather day tomorrow. Dreading the early wakeup to drive an hour and be there early enough for this big and very crowded race. Our coach was saying today that the guy who we discussed here that won the Peachtree 10k and set a new course record is coming for this race, and I think the women's winner as well, so it should be a pretty fast and competitive race, especially if the weather is relatively cool. Of course I'm way back in the pack and won't see any of that, but still.

I’m slacking on posting my daily mileage but am on track for my 50 miles for July. Parkrun free 5k was this morning and I have a new PB of 35:29. It was hot and humid which meant I needed some short walks to recover, but I was excited that I am improving bit by bit. Most everyone else runs faster than I do, but I’m not racing them. I’m just racing myself to improve each week.10 -
So umm today instead of a run, I was in a poison cloud. literally. Was so thick could not see more then a couple of yards (meters). A chemical plant nearby caught fire. It was unreal. Big thick clouds sitting on the ground like dirty filthy cotton balls. We were under a mandatory "stay in your home, close all windows/doors, and turn off your AC" order in the middle of a heat wave.
ERF. The order has lifted, but still not sure I want to run. Looks clear by my hours as we are up on a hill, but probably only takes a shift in the wind to change that. Early, they thought it was safe and lifted the order, so we drive out to a funeral and were suddenly enveloped in the cloud just as the order was reactivated. We were literally IN the cloud when they said: "Umm do not go out afterall just yet."
Gee thanks.
They did not say what was in the cloud just "Chlorine and other chemicals"
So how long can you hold your breath? The alert went out 15 hours ago... probably not long enough!13 -
@scott6255 Happy anniversary! Our 9th is the 30th, this is the first year I’ve actually remembered it. Dh got sore over it last year. Hey, we met April 4th, that’s gotta count, right?... I digress. Regarding the gnat; well least you don’t have a weak bladder and didn’t pp yourself coughing. 😉

I got out yesterday for a walk. PA said “do more frequently”, butt ugh... it’s hard walking y’all. I’m not tracking my miles. I’m going to let Strava tell me what I did at the end of the month. I don’t need to get competitive when trying to get better. The plan was short daily walks, but the runner in me wants to go walk 10 miles and see if it miraculously turns into a run, so I’m only torturing myself every 4-5 days with a fair walk because I can’t seem to embrace a daily walk to the addition entrance and back (0.5 miles). I’m so broken. My left butt hurts. Which isn’t the next thing to fix. Assuming it will get fixed, 6 months to a year away. Waah waaah waah haha!

Sky around me still clear and no new alerts. We exited the cloud as fast as we could so I do not think we were in it long enough to matter much. I hope. Hey maybe I will get superpowers?
Might in an hour or 2 when the temp falls a bit. Supposed to get as cold as 84F later.
