July 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

I am so far behind this month. I also have been so totally inconsistent. I actually started walking to work just so I would have some forced activity in my day. So, no goal, other than to do.
I over peopled myself Saturday. And thus slept too late Sunday to get a run in, at a time when I wouldn’t melt. I also woke up to the sad news of loosing @mobycarp. Obviously goalof just do didn’t work yesterday.
Temp was still climbing rather than falling when it got to bedtime last night. So, I had grand intentions of actually waking up early enough today to run with our friend on my mind.. And I think it was actually meant to be. I didn’t even remember to turn back on my early alarm, but I was awake before it should have gone off. I even tried to go back to sleep, and I just couldn’t. So, since my pace has been so slow and erratic lately, (read I’m at my highest weight ever and lazy and unsurprisingly that is impacting my running) my plan was to run for an hour and see how far that got me.
It was just absolutely beautiful out. It was so easy to keep the intention of remembering a friend in mind. There was beautiful sun rising, rainbows, and a little bit of mist at the end. And my poor neglected and uncharged headphones didn’t die until I was walking up my driveway. Powers other than my completely inadequate willpower we’re making sure this mornings run happened, and that it happened smoothly enough to keep my mind where I wanted it.
Also, because of @PastorVincent, I see the garmin I’ve been eyeing, and trying to convince myself is a carrot for just doing is in the 50ish%/$100+ off category. I totally didn’t have that in the budget for the month. My budget and I have decisions to make today.9 -

I love the idea of a 24 hour relay for @MobyCarp.6 -

Long run of the week last night. It felt slow and really really hot. Garmin says it was barely 30 degrees, so it must have been plenty humid. Came home and heard the sad news about @MobyCarp . I've learned so much from his posts and will dedicate my next run to his memory.
Delayed posting until now because I wanted to write something about people, running and life in general. It turned into quite an essay so I'm spoilering it below.
A few weeks ago, I read something about the Japanese and religion. The Japanese culture, similar to Chinese culture, believes that there are many gods, and has no problem adding new ones to the existing thousands. However, while Chinese are almost entirely pragmatic (what can this god do for me?), religion in Japan is largely ritual based. People who identify as Buddhist have no qualms celebrating Christmas in a church, or bringing new babies to Shinto shrines for Miyamairi, a traditional rite of passage for newborns. The thinking behind these practices follows the logic of - this is the event, and this is the right ritual with which to celebrate it.
Despite of this (or perhaps because of this?), the Japanese have a certain ritualistic feeling to their everyday life. Things that were entirely practical skills (tea-making, calligraphy, martial arts) in China have become complicated rituals far transcending their original intentions into the realm of lifestyle or philosophy.
The same might be said for other activities that seem mundane, until the activity is done over and over, day in and day out, until it transcends the everyday and becomes a kind of ritual. The wizened craftsman insists on glazing his pottery a dozen times, beyond the limits of practicality. The housewife goes to tea ceremonies every weekend for decades, perfecting the art of sitting properly, bowing correctly, putting each utensil just so. And the runner pounds the pavement four times a week, through all seasons, in any weather, perhaps starting out for weight loss, or better health, or because they can't afford therapy, but eventually, as long as they keep going, the point of the run becomes the run itself.
As Murakami stated in his book with a very long name: "People sometimes sneer at those who run every day, claiming they’ll go to any length to live longer. But I don’t think that’s the reason most people run. Most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest... Exerting yourself to the fullest within your individual limits: that’s the essence of running, and a metaphor for life."
I guess what I'm trying to say is, this running thing we do, is a point within itself. Every time we left right left right down the street, we're doing more than just moving. We're celebrating something. One footfall at a time. Repeating as long as it takes to finish.
So, you know, keep moving. Keep celebrating. Happy running, everyone.25 -

Today is a rest day for me, but I will be dedicating my run tomorrow to @MobyCarp. I love the idea of doing a dedicated run for him during the New York Marathon.
I did also want to say congrats on your great races and great race reports @katharmonic and @Teresa502!
@shanaber I'm so sorry about the dog bite. Hope it heals soon!
@noblsheep I really loved your "essay"!4 -
My husband and I ran 5 midnight miles in honor of @MobyCarp.
It was slick underfoot, raining sometimes hard enough to sting, the raindrops kept making the run pause, a dog chased us, and a drunk ran up on the curb at us after we leaped out of the street trying to get out of the way - seems like everything was conspiring to prevent us finishing this run, which I thought in a way made it a perfect run to dedicate to the memory of someone so consistent and determined. I know we lost at least half a mile due to not noticing the run was paused, but we kept going until it officially showed 5, even having to run an OCD lap around our driveway at the end when we reached home at 4.98! Was it MobyCarp who first called it an OCD run?
Oddly, my ankle which was so rotten last time I went out didn’t give me trouble during this run at all, and isn’t even touchy now.
Very grateful to be running today. May the peace that passes understanding be with all of you, and especially Kevin’s daughter and those close to him.14 -
oh i just read about @MobyCarp
he was one of the first one's to welcome me when i came around the first time. and welcomed me back.
idk if i'll get a run into tonight but i will try. and it will be for him. i'm trying not to cry. people look at you weird when you cry at your desk.
i'll be keeping an eye on the thread for 24hr relay.
thank you @noblsheep
feel better @shanaber10 -

Took my rest as intended Friday, and had a truly lazy Saturday, but was mentally preparing to go a little further Sunday. On my old HS xc team, we would sometimes say we "worshipped in the church of the Sunday long run." It was the day of the week to not worry about pace or PRs, but just go and go and go further. I'm not a religious or spiritual person by any means but always liked that idea - for now, I guess 4 miles counts as "long" for me. It's the farthest I've gone since probably Thanksgiving weekend of last year [a good time to burn some extra calories.... ] See where I can get in 8 or 12 Sundays from now!7 -
On Saturday I got to run 4.79 miles. It would a tough run - it was hot, my shins were hurting (I need to make another appointment with the PT), and I had to take several walking breaks, but I still got out there. And at the end of my run, I jumped in the lake to cool off, which was AMAZING.
I hit both of my cardio goals this week, but was quite low on strength and yoga. I only made it to the gym once, but I compensated by doing a whole bunch of gardening, which I consider a fair trade-off. I was out of the house a lot this weekend hitting garage sales and a concert with my husband on Saturday, then brunch and groceries with my mom yesterday. The heat was intense yesterday but it’s already a little cooler today. Hopefully tomorrow morning won’t be too bad for my next run.
I would absolutely be in for a November 3 tribute run. I’m still in shock.

I was out for the weekend vising MIL in Dallas. Now, that I'm back..I'm shocked at the sad news . I had just read his post @MobyCarp and I was hoping that he got over his cold/illness. So sad, life is too short sometimes. I didn't get the pleasure to know him, since I just joined the group, but he sounds like an amazing person. RIP our friend.

@zeesparrow - I missed it before but great job running a 10k PR on your own. Even if Strava won't acknowledge it.
@mbaker566 Glad your escapee made it safely to the bar. I assume you both had a drink after that. My own little terror escaped the yard last week when the lawn service didn't latch the gate and I almost had a heart attack. Fortunately I found her just down the street but the possibilities are terrifying.
@rheddmobile love your picture of you on the midnight run. Nice tribute.
@noblsheep - beautiful essay. Thank you for sharing. The idea of celebrating each step and keep repeating until it's finished is perfect. I looked up the Murakami quote, too, I love that.

After reading some in this thread this morning, I decided to go to the run group this morning and get my run done with some company. I thought of MobyCarp and his running groups and imagined the advice and encouragement he would give.
This Monday morning group is low key and just a base run rather than a workout, so it was a nice opportunity for a recovery run and a chance to talk with some other runners and our coach. I've been wanting to talk to coach about my struggles with racing this year so I took that opportunity today and we had a good chat. He kind of hit on what I've been thinking about some disappointment post-marathon. In the last couple of years, I went from barely a runner to a marathon and had so many PRs because I had a lot of room for improvement. Now it's going to be incremental and maybe different kinds of improvement because I'm at a much better level of fitness.
So my plan is to not do any road races for the rest of this summer and kind of give myself a break from the mindset. Train to train and be fit and have fun. Do other things (Spartan races, rock climbing, hiking) but keep the running base solid and ready for the fall. Celebrate and keep repeating.11 -
I read about @MobyCarp yesterday, and all day I was in grief and shock. I still can't believe it. I don't post often but have been reading for awhile and it truly feels like I know all of you. I used to look forward to reading his posts as they were so detailed and so inspiring. Even his last post when he was ill with the fever, he still made a way to sound motivating. I did dedicate my run this morning to him. 6 miles in the heat, humidity that Raleigh is at this time of year.
I'll miss his running adventures.7 -

I am in shock over @MobyCarp. I read the details yesterday and it has left me stunned. I know I am new to this group, but I found his posts inspiring. I’ll be dedicating my run tonight to him, but there’s something else that’s been nagging at me after reviewing the details of what happened. I haven’t been to the doctor for a physical in years. I’ve successfully avoided to doctor for my pride. I don’t want to step on the scale. I had planned to wait until I reached a healthy BMI. But I realize that I’m just playing games with my health. In honor of @MobyCarp I will find a doctor, schedule a physical, and show up. It’s been 14 years since my last physical. It’s time. I hope to honor him in this way somehow.26

That is a wonderful tribute! Going to the doctor can be a challenge for a lot of us for a lot of reasons, but I strongly believe that finding a general practitioner you can work with for preventative care is incredibly important. My mother was in the hospital for almost a week last Thanksgiving after a couple of decades without seeing a doctor - she was diagnosed with heart failure from an arrhythmia that absolutely could have been years earlier.7 -

I have no idea what, but I feel a real need to pay tribute in some way to Kevin. We should put our heads together as a group and come up with something when we come to terms with the news.
I don't know if Kevin had anything undone on his running bucket list, but if anyone knows of something, we could help him finish it.
Or we can do another 24 hour run like we did for @KeepRunningFatboy
I can't believe it's almost a year since we lost him too.
And yes! I'm completely in for something to honour Kevin7 -
@noblsheep Thank you for sharing your essay. I think it was exactly what I needed to read today.3

I’d love to that for Kevin and the group. I am imbedded in school work through the 18th. If someone wants to get it started (and finished), I suggest perhaps taking the one from Dennis and creating a copy, then times can be adjusted. What day and time is the tribute race?
Here is a renamed files to piggy back off of if anyone wants to chip at it. Usually this is a group effort, so unless someone wants to own it, I suggest you have a look if you are inclined to help. If you want to own it, just let us know.

@Elise4270 awesome, I was hoping you would know how it worked! I'm jotting names at the moment of those who are interested, it isn't for months yet so we have plenty of time to sort all the slots out etc nearer the date.
I have 16 names on my list at the moment (although I'm not sure I know who everyone is on Facebook so may have doubled up there!) I think at least three of us will be running HMs that day so (if the others are as slow as I am) that's a good 6-7.5 hours covered already!

Don't post often, but generally will speed read this thread to keep up with what I don't visually see on Strava. Saddened by the passing of @MobyCarp. Re a tribute, I am running the NYC Marathon "virtually" this year as part of a guarantee entry into running the actual NYC marathon in 2020. It can be anytime during that weekend and currently too far in advance to plan, but would imagine I would try and run either Saturday or Sunday dependent on my schedule. If it works out, would like to participate.10 -
I will download the spread sheet and get it started and everyone who wants to participate can sign up. We can worry about time when it gets closer in late October/November. The actual race is November 3rd so we will have to organize in October and I think all the date/times should be US EST to match the race.

I'd love to have some great words that would help ease the passing of @MobyCarp. I got nothing.
I had an extra rest day this weekend, since we hosted a party. I ate too much and drank too much and there's still party food lying around, so it's ongoing. I meant to run 7 miles today, but I think I have some dust from the Haunted Ghost Pepper chips in my lungs, or something, so breathing felt bad, even though I felt like I was getting plenty of air - if that makes any sense... I called it at 5 miles and looked at my data - Fitbit says I managed to keep 96% of the run in "Cardio" instead of half of it being in "Peak". I was doing a pretty good job of holding the pace within a couple of seconds of an 11 minute mile. Tomorrow is another day.
No More Than 120 Miles

July 15 - 5 miles

It might be good to start a separate thread too.
ETA. Sorry.. not being bossy. I’m a little behind schedule and have made no progress today with reviewing for tomorrow’s exam, dd needs Word help, dental cleaning and work/doc documents and misc errands. @kevaasen ‘s post made me think of sorting it from this one. He’s good with google docs too. 😉
ETA again. Thanks @shanaber. Hope that dog bite is healing up well. Seems like it was a traumatic event.6 -
out of curiousity. where did he get his name from. mobycarp, not kevin0

I haven't posted in a few months but I saw the post on Strava about @MobyCarp and it's just hard to wrap my head around. I never met him and I didn't even knew his name was Kevin but I still felt like I "knew" him from his posts and great advice. He will definitely be missed.
I would love to be added to the list for the tribute run to honor him.3
