So...
I'm thinking of upgrading my Garmin. I've had mine for almost a year and love it. So I think im only wanting to upgrade to get the latest and greatest.
I currently have a vivoactive 3 with music. I'm not competitive, mostly ignore the HR info now, though it can be useful and I like having it there. I'm tempted to get a bike and start swimming now I am in a location where these things are possible.
Suggestions? There are SO Many to choose from now!2 -

Couldn't help smiling at the egg trot challenge, and yes, also a great occassion to follow Kevin's example and ask ourselves "what can I do to help someone out?"
In running news:
I am SO in love with my Garmin. Thanks again @noblsheep! I have yet to find time to read the manual (work is crazy this month!) so haven't yet figured out the pace alert thing, which I want to, however I did discover that I can set it to my run-walk intervals. Getting some funny looks when I bleep every x seconds in busy areas, but it sure beats having to use the interval timer on my phone! Actually being able to see my pace on my wrist instead of having to hold and look at my phone screen is awesome, as is the fact that it seems to be far more accurate at any given moment than Zombies Run! :-) Still a lot more to learn about it but so far so super!
This morning a random Facebook time thingy reminded me that a year ago today I did my first ever 5 mile run. I've been feeling frustrated with what my overdemanding brain sees as a lack of progress in my running recently, that served as a reminder and provided more perspective on how far I really have come in not much time at all.
Having finished a 9-mile plan last week, I'm currently in a cutback/transition period to get used to 4 runs per week again instead of 3. The Hal Higdon HM plan I intend to start in a few weeks has 3 consecutive running days, then a rest day, then long run, then cross training, then another rest day. Last time round I found after a few weeks that 3 days in a row was too much for me, and had to move them. I ended up running Tues, Wed, Fri and long runs on Sundays. I'm going to start off doing the 3 days in a row (very short distances) and will see whether the legs accept it or not. So yesterday was 5km, this morning was 3km and tomorrow will be just 1 mile.
July goal 85km. Run so far: 56.97km
@eleanorhawkins Love the run walk intervals on my Garmin. That is something I have to have on my running watch! I use to worry about being the only person who does walk breaks in my running group but I just embrace it. It's gotten me this far and I'm sure it'll be with me in some form or another as I continue to improve. Im doing my first Hal Higdon plan for this fall marathon cycle (Landed on Intermediate 2 for 5 days a week running 1 day cross) and I wish you a wonderful training cycle!

@GregInORL thanks! I used Higdon's Novice 1 for my first HM last year, trying Novice 2 this year. I was pointed towards the run-walk-run thing by my physio after upsetting my legs at the aforementioned HM last year (typical case of too much too soon) and I'm learning to not care what anyone thinks now, especially as it keeps my legs so much happier!

The Garmin 245 is a great option to trade price ofr features...

Of course the 945 is the top end of all things
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-945-multisport-watch-in-depth-review.html
Or the least expensive

So there I just did the salesman thing and presented you with 3 choices. Now the decision will come down to your budget and desires.1 -
@Avidkeo I will throw in my $.02 and say the Forerunner 235 is a great watch (although if you want to swim it doesn't have a built-in swim mode, but you can download an app, or just use 'Other' and setup your own fields).
Too bad you missed Amazon Prime days, they had some good deals
7.5 miles this morning. Was a hot, humbling run. Even the downhills felt hard. Those are character building runs I guess.
I am liking the idea of just keeping a running total of miles run on the NYC Marathon weekend as a tribute to @MobyCarp. Seems that would be easier, and allow more people to be included.8 -

I know you ran the Haunted Half last year. Have you run the Battleship Half before? If not, I would probably pick it. Would you get to see your parents though if you ran it instead of the Haunted Half?4 -

The 245 is out now, which is replacing the 235. That means you might find some closeout deals on the 235... but personally, since the GPS chip was upgraded in the 245, and the 245 adds the music option, I would tend to get the 245 over the 235.

5k night miles again. We were under a flash flood warning because of what’s left of Barry so I thought we would have to postpone, but despite the forecast showing constant thunderstorms for the next three days, it wasn’t even raining. Nice run, humid but otherwise pleasant. I also finished 50 miles in 30 days for the MapMyRun challenge contest for a NY marathon bib entry. I have no idea what I would do if I won a marathon bib, but might as well enter!8

July goal 100 miles
I went exploring the other way on the trail near the hotel this a.m. and it was very nice. I think I'm feeling the altitude today, though. OR perhaps it was yesterday's morning 5k and evening treadmill speedwork while waiting on laundry? Either way, I'm not worried. I love running, even if it's slow.
Speaking of watches... I'd been waiting for a watch that did what I wanted AND would look good with my non-running clothing. I think my finger must've slipped on my phone screen when I saw this, because it showed up at the house 2 days later.15 -

Another option is to go the refurbished route. You can usually save 20 to 30 percent over the price of new, and except for the box it comes in, I could't tell the difference between new and refurbished.2 -

Warm and muggy today. 1.6 inches of rain overnight, courtesy of Barry.

I have been running but not posting very much. Fighting a left calf niggle ( 8 day break ) and it feels pretty good now. Did some running while out of town at work exploring bush trails as my next event is all bush and a climb over a mountain.
07/01 14.0 km - 14.00km - 126.00km - YTD 506.21km Judah Hill
07/02 07.0 km - 21.00km - 119.00km - YTD 513.21km Riverbank Trail
07/10 09.0 km - 30.00km - 110.00km - YTD 522.21km GP Wedgewood BushTrails
07/13 10.0 km - 40.00km - 100.00km - YTD 532.21km East Side Loop + Riverbank
07/14 06.0 km - 46.00km - 094.00km - YTD 538.21km Riverbank Trail
07/16 05.4 km - 51.40km - 088.60km - YTD 543.61km Exploring new Bush Trails on the East Side River Valley
I like the idea presented by @polskagirl01 and supported by @Elise4270 of just getting out and running in Honor of Kevin as I badly pouched the Time conversion last time. In November we are in the dregs of winter so limited daylight and fast weather changes.polskagirl01 wrote: »I'm late in chiming in here, but the 24-hour plan was a bit complicated to organize and implement. I think that's a fine idea. If you guys want to pay your respects in the manner of your choosing, it should be done. If you want to share the time you ran, it can be populated in the table, if others want to see the accumulated time/miles, that'd be okay too.
Definitely no one should conform especially if they are lead to act in kindness as Kevin would have. That should be encouraged and celebrated.
I probably won't be able to participate. So perhaps I will just cook some eggs and try to trot around my living area. And remember to help others as he would have.
Would it be appropriate to invite the Fleet Feet Runners he trained with to join in as a tribute?
Especially since they will probably be putting together some thing for the NYC as a group.8 -

I believe it would.
We can do more than one thing as a tribute to him, I know the 24/26 hour run is a lot of work. It can be pieced together retrospectively if needed. I’m not sure one day is enough to celebrate his influences and kind heart. I propose we take the entire month of November to celebrate him. I think we threw out the idea of a month to celebrate all the ones we’ve lost, Dennis and Steve...(I know Steve wasn’t a runner here, but he might as well have been as an extension of @HonuNui, there s one photo of him that seems his personality comes through, and there’s an instant connection). We can take this a chance to focus on on others, not just our own running endeavors. So with that, I propose we take November and dedicate it for such a purpose; November could be “MobyCarp’s monthly running challenge” to include taking time to care for one another in even the simplest of ways. It also corresponds to RTE’s Hug a Runner challenge, it’d be opportune to tie the two, as they help underprivileged kids and others in the running community. I think the challenge is 5USD, so there should be no financial burden in helping others. Keeping a kind heart helps others, don’t think I’m speaking of giving all your worldly possessions away and following in the foot steps of Mother Theresa (Saint Theresa). But if that is where it leads you... don’t let me stop you.
Keep well all.16 -

All of this is awesome.... see, us runners might be 'not right in the head' but we can still brainstorm like better than the best!8 -
So do we want to organize a 24 hour run for @MobyCarp along with the total miles and November 'Hug a Runner' tributes?
My list had something like 32 names on it... my vote is let's say yes for now and see once those who are interested/able work out what times they can do whether it's feasible or a big pain in the backside, in which case we could just wing it?
I had forgotten the Hug a Runner thing was in November too, what a lot of coincidences!4 -

July goal: 100 miles
7/2: 6.26 miles
7/3: 5.51 miles
7/4: 6.25 miles
7/7: 9.11 miles
7/9: 6.23 miles

7/17: 6.26 miles
68.4/100 miles completed
Today's run was 6.26 miles. It was hot. It was 79°F, feels like 83°F with 73% humidity and dew point 69° at 5:45 am. It was a little windy too. And not the nice breeze that cools you off, but the wind that makes it hard to run. The run was good though. But I am ready to be done with this summer heat.
@workaholic_nurse 11/3 is the date of the NYC marathon and the tribute run for MobyCarp. That might play into my decision if I were deciding between 11/3 and 10/26.
2019 races:

5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather

I know I haven’t been an active member here for a long time now, but it was a huge part of my life for a long time. Despite the time passing since I’ve been online here, I have been deeply saddened in a way I didn’t think I would be since hearing of Kevin’s passing - I think the fact that someone can touch someone’s life in a seemingly small but actually huge way is a tribute to the kind of person they are, and is certainly a testament to how inspirational, friendly and supportive @MobyCarp was. I’m also glad I’m not the only one who has thought about him when boiling an egg!
I can’t promise I’ll be an active member in the meantime, I just can’t keep up, but I will make a point to be back for the lovely tributes you have planned throughout November, so please count me in. I’m only a strava comment away, and I follow many of you on strava. I can certainly take care of some the more awkward times in the 24hr run as I’m in a different time zone here in the UK.
See you all in November15 -
Not sure if we have anyone who would be a 1st time marathoner, but they are giving away some free entries for the NYC Marathon with priority given to 1st timers -- https://blog.strava.com/2019-tcs-new-york-city-marathon-contest/7

Hey everyone! I know I haven't been on MFP lately (more active on FB). BUT my cast is off. I'm still using crutches to help walk. So my goals for the remainder of July are to get mobility back and walking without crutches!
I am cleared to start running (slowly) in 4 weeks!21 -
Today I learned that if there is an actual fire on the 7th floor of the building where I work, the 5th floor, the floor I work on, will not be evacuated.

Nice. Reminds me of when we moved into an 8th floor rental apartment then were told that the local fire brigade's ladders are only long enough to reach the 2nd floor :-o

Someone on FB just told me this is standard. You only evacuate the floors above the fire? What? I was outside already when the alarm went off and the firetrucks came racing over but no one else was from the floor I worked on. They did not even know.2 -
Dh said he didn't have and running shoes so he ordered another pair. I think they are just booby-traps. Can ya say "booby" on mfp?8

Yup, our system will announce what floors to evacuate and lower floors should be alert and wait to see if message changes. If I remember correctly it also can be set to the floors that need to evacuate and no one else will know (except you can hear it going off somewhere in the building)0 -

Not evacuating when the building is on fire is so far out of my normal thinking that I would have never considered this was even a possible option before.4 -

Same. A lot of us are uncomfortable with this. But half the time it's someone microwaving popcorn that sets it off and we used to have to evacuate for that. ALL. THE. TIME.0
