I'm still undecided about the race on Sunday. I have until 4pm today to cancel hotel reservations. The skin on my knees still hurts when it stretches, though it's better. My shower didn't hurt this morning, and I can "run" up/down the stairs. We could change to a 5k/10k at packet pickup if we go, which is probably the sensible choice. Or staying home entirely. The real question is, am I sensible?
Scrapes and bruises (which are admittedly difficult to see in the pictures) which I took last night are under the spoiler if anyone's interested.
Everything is shiny from the triple antibiotic ointment I had just applied. I have bruises on the right side of both knees, my right palm, almost the entire right forearm and a doozy near my right shoulder.
Edit: I talked with my husband after posting, and thought about it on my way to work. I think we'll go, but not run. We can still participate by cheering on everyone else who has put in the training for this race, visit with family and have a fun weekend away from home.
Is it bad form to pick up the packet and wear the race shirt if you don't run? I probably will either way, but I'm curious what others think.8 -

Wow @zeesparrow ! That looks really painful! I don't know about others, but I don't think it is bad to pick up the packet and wear the shirt. It's not a finishers shirt. Plus if the race is for charity you helped the charity by paying your registration fee so you might as well get the shirt. They already printed it and put it in a bag for you.5
-
zeesparrow- Go for it! Wear the T with pride, knowing you put in all the hard work!3
-
@luciebrucie - It will get easier!
@zeesparrow - definitely go to packet pickup and get your goodies. It there is an expo walk around and visit all the vendors. You definitely earned the t-shirt with all the training you put in. The injuries look really painful! I hope the heal quickly!5 -
@zeesparrow I agreed with @shanaber, wear the shirt. I suppose it may be taboo to some, but if you paid for it, you're a supporter, you can wear the shirt. I have no qualms wearing race shirts I didn't run, especially the cheap ones, free or purchased a year after the event!
ETA rock star running badges there! Ouch!
My DD just headed out to her Orientation class. The day every parent dreams of, college, she did take 6 hours over the summer. She still lives at home and it's just a JuCo, but hallelujah!

It definitely is taboo to some, as is wearing the shirt in the race. I have seen people warn about that. Some feel that you did not earn it until you finished. I am pretty sure this is only a tiny fraction of runners. There are complainers in all crowds it seems.
But I agree with all the peeps in this thread. Wear it if you want to. It is your shirt, you paid for it. If someone is bothered by it, that is their problem, not yours

Yes, though wearing the shirt in the race violates the "nothing new on race day" rule and makes me cringe for that reason. But to each their own...4 -
@kgirlhart @luciebrucie @shanaber @Elise4270 @PastorVincent @T1DCarnivoreRunner Thanks all. As I said, I would probably wear it anyway ( I trained for this dangit ) but was curious what others thought.
A former coworker not only didn't like the idea of wearing the shirt during the race (even short races or fun runs) but he didn't want to see what they looked like until he was done. Nice to hear that might be more of a minority.2 -

That hurts just looking at it!
As for the shirt - yes, go for it! You paid for it, and are there participating by supporting the other runners.
Not running and picking up a medal, though, is a big no-no.4 -

Oh, definitely. The medal is earned, the shirt is bought, IMO and YMMV and etc.3 -
Oh yeah absolutely. That's a finisher's medal. I wouldn't dream of even trying to get one of those without doing the race!3

4.62 miles on the treadmill this morning due to time constraints and me being a chicken to get out in the dark on a country road by myself!
Good luck @katharmonic and @PastorVincent on your races this weekend - and anyone else out there!5 -

Total: 48.82 miles
Notes:
Yesterday was another double day- a workout run in the morning before work and then an easy trail run in the evening. My morning workout run was 2x12' at LTP (8:03) with 4' easy jog between, plus warm up and cool down. I made it 1.50 miles in the first 12' block for an average pace of 8:00 (first mile split was 8:05, so I sped up a bit in the last half mile). The second 12' block, I covered 1.52 miles for an average pace of 7:54; my first mile split there was 7:56 so more evenly paced than the first block. Over all a very solid workout run! After work, I got in another four miles, this time on the trails. My legs were pretty sore so I stayed on the flatter parts to help keep the effort easy. I guess the recovery run did the trick, because I woke up with pretty fresh legs today! Today's run is just an easy run commute home from work. It's normally a five mile trip, but part of the trail is closed for construction so I think it will be closer to 5.5 with the detour. It's pretty hot, humid, and sunny today so it should make for good heat training!

Fleet Fleet Liberty Mile tonight! The weather right now is predicted to be as good as it gets for August. Mid 70s, low dew point, and low humidity.
I have no chance of placing, but my 6:53 time from the last time I ran this will be my goal to beat. I did not train specifically for this short race, so I will just have to see as I go how it is.
I am in the "Masters" heat which has an 8 min cut off. So at least I will not have any walkers or children to deal with.
Other than, you know, actually training, seems like a prime set up for a fast run.
In HS I ran a 5 min mile... that probably is long long gone now, but maybe 6:30? I have no idea! I will know in like few hours though!7 -

Race Report!
Spoiler, I did not die!
So for whatever reason, the slowest runners go first in this race. The "One for fun", "Kids of Steel" and "Pup Trotters" all started at 7:00. Masters started at 7:25 and Pro at 8:00.
So, I hung out in the starting area with Mrs. Pastor Vincent until she started. Once she was off I started trying to warm up. Temps and humidity were low as predicted. I watched what the other "masters" were doing for their warm-up. Things like running backwards, high steps, butt kicks, short sprints, and mimiced them. So basically for 15 mins or so I was just running back and forth on one city block trying to get my HR up to race levels.
Then it was time to line up. I hate this cause I start to cool back down quickly. AH well. Knowing this was the masters' division, I placed myself pretty far back in the pack. There was an "on your mark" and gunshot, then we were off.
Normally in races, I burst out of the gate at a sub-4 min mile to clear the walkers, kids and such but there were none in this race, so I tried a new method, I pushed for my target pace right off the block. This was downtown, so GPS tracking is not worth much. This meant I could not depend on my watch to check pace. (it actually was close, but I did not know that till after).
I crossed the first quarter-mile at 1:30, only slightly ahead of my target, so I decided to try and hold it a bit. As I approach the 1/2 I could feel the fun dry heaves coming indicating I was pushing too hard. So I backed off a touch and then determined to hold that through to the end. At this point, I started passing people. Little by little working my way up the crowd.
I cross 3/4 at 5ish (forget) and tell myself to hold back just a bit longer, but now start targeting people to pass. One by one I pass them.
At 200m to the finish, I pick up speed, pass one more person.
At 100m, I switch to full-on sprint and pass one final person.
I crossed the finish line at 6:31, PR!
The winner, of course, was 4:45 so he was probably home watching the football game by the time I crossed
I think I could have hit 6:25 at best had I started my final sprint a bit earlier, but overall I am pretty happy with my plan and execution.
Here are some pics:
Three more races tomorrow!15 -
@PastorVincent Look at you go! Great finishing photo, you look like you’re really booking! Congrats on a well handled race!0

@PastorVincent great stuff! Good luck today!
This morning was doomed from the start for me. We have squatters in the ground floor apartments of our block who were fighting in the street outside at 1am, woke me up because it's way too hot to sleep without the windows open. Then I woke up at 5.15am, thought my watch said 6.15 and as I had set my alarm for 6.30 I decided to get up. It was only when I was taking my first sip of coffee I realised what the time really was.
My darling husband ate my pre-run banana last night (is this grounds for divorce? If not, it should be!) so I had to stick to my usual 2 coffees and a cereal bar instead before I hit the road.
Because it was earlier than usual as well as a Saturday it was darker, the streets were quieter and the only people about seemed to be on their way home from bars. For the first time, I actually felt uncomfortable being out alone during my warm-up walk and for the first kilometre or so of my run before I reached the beach.
I have been doing my long runs up the trail by the riverbed recently, instead of along the seafront promenade, to avoid the tourists, but that's a bit lonely first thing and it's been muddy the last few times because of leaky irrigation systems. So last night I had decided (even though I had always sworn I wouldn't ever want to do that!) to take the path that runs alongside the coastal motorway, which there are always people running along. It's flat, it's right next to the beach. The plan was to do an out and back along there.
By kilometre 3.5, as I reached the place we normally go to the beach (in the car) I had worked out that I absolutely hate running beside the motorway with cars racing passed on the other side of the crash barrier. So, my sleep-deprived brain decided it would be a better idea to come home round the backroad we usually drive. It's hilly, but on maybe 5 hours sleep max. my brain didn't think they were an issue. Yeah, turns out they seem a lot smaller in the car! Thank God I had an emergency gel in my pocket, otherwise I think I'd still be sitting halfway up the middle hill
Anyway, the moral of the story is don't make impromptu route change decisions on not enough sleep!
Now I am going to inhale breakfast and try to make it until after lunch before taking a nap. I have friends coming round for dinner tonight, so will need sleep if I'm to survive! Pizza and alcohol may be consumed...
August goal: 90km. Run so far: 34.56km.15 -

Thanks!
That is when I was near my max sprint. I broke 204 spm. Surprise my legs could move that quick! Certainly could not have held that up for the whole mile, or would have been a world record run!3 -
@PastorVincent congrats on a very well run race! You were 1 second off your prediction of 6:30!!!! That's amazing! 🤯
Hope you got some good rest for today's THREE races. Good luck!3 -

Thankful to get a double digit run in this morning. It was miserably hot, but that was just the beginning. My normal routine is to put Icy-Hot on my perpetually tight calfs before I run. That seems to loosen them up. I was sure I had bought a new tube, but couldn't find it. So I applied this foot pain cream wifey bought me last year. Figured it was basically the same thing.
As I started running, my legs got hot. They kept getting worse as I added miles. By about 4 they felt like they were on fire. It was barely tolerable in the shade, but when I hit sun, I felt like a vampire in those movies when they go out in the sun and their skin starts smoking. But I was like 6 miles away from home, so I just had to tough it out.
Got home, kicked off my shoes, and turned the hose on my legs for about 5 minutes. Over an hour later now, and they still are really hot. Lesson learned. 😒

Great job @PastorVincent !!! Congrats on the PR and good luck today!0

I’ve been back from the west coast since Tuesday evening and have even gotten a morning run in on Wednesday (2.11 miles around my home lake). My shins and hips were being chatty and I decided to let myself turn around after a mile. I’m still rebuilding confidence and re-learning how to run slow, and I don’t want to push it too hard. I was meant to run this AM but I slept poorly and have a huge busy weekend trying to make up hours from my trip while also starting to grade bar exams (my twice-a-year side-gig). I'd like to make it out this afternoon or tomorrow, we will see.
Anyhow, I wrote most of this on Wednesday but if I don’t post it, it might keep getting longer! I've still got a couple of pages to catch up and if I try to reply to anything specific I never will, but hugs, congratulations, and so forth as appropriate! So last Saturday was my first 10K since February, and it was a blast! My husband, sister, brother-in-law and I met in Seattle, WA on Thursday evening - they drove up from Portland after work, and we flew in - unfortunately, our flight was delayed about 5 hours, but I’d brought my laptop so was able to work while I waited.
We got an AirBNB, which was a new experience for me, but pretty nice and a good price for the location. Parking was a little hairy, unfortunately - we had a parking pass but the zones were confusing and my sister took about 45 minutes finding a parking place that first night. It got easier after that, or we got luckier, or both.
Parking in Seattle is Serious Business. You can tell because the signs are huge and have signs taped to them.
On Friday we did some random sightseeing and picked up our packets, then Saturday morning we drove inlands to a beautiful state (?) park outside of Carnation, WA for Beat the Blerch. For those not familiar with The Blerch, it’s from a webcomic/book called “The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances” by The Oatmeal and is absolutely worth the read. The Oatmeal (aka Matthew Inman) lives in the Seattle area and started putting on this race a few years ago. I’ve wanted to go since I heard about it, so when we were looking for a destination race for the first weekend in August, it worked out perfectly.
Swag! I bought the hat and book, but everything else (except the medal, duh) was in the swag bag. And because it was Seattle, it included a hemp product.
We didn’t have too much trouble with traffic until a couple of miles out, at which point my BIL (who was starting the half marathon a half hour before my sister and I started the 10K) started getting antsy about jumping out and running to the start. We got him most of the way there and were able to park and get to the starting line in time to see him off.
Unfortunately, in between parking and getting to the starting line, I realized that I’d left my bib at the AirBNB, so we got to spend a VERY anxious half hour waiting in the packet-pickup line hoping they’d be willing to give me another one. Mostly I was anxious and my sister told me it would be fine, which was true - they were super chill about it and we got to the starting line just as they were letting the first wave of 10K runners go.
We are pretty clearly related.
We were in the fourth wave and ran for the first mile or so, after which we alternated walking and running. My sister is a slower runner than me right now and we were both undertrained, so I mainly just enjoyed the lovely scenery, good company, and a lot of great people-watching. It was a nerdy, casual crowd, so there were lots of fun outfits. All of the races were on the same out-and-back course, so it was a little bit tight in spots, but everyone was very chill.
I also got a TON of compliments on my Captain Marvel shirt, which was fun. At one point we’d been running behind the same lady for a mile or so and after yet-another someone passing the other way shot me a compliment she turned around and then nodded and said “now I get it!” It was pretty funny.
Not pictured: the "Now I get it" lady.
We ended up finishing in about an hour and a half, coincidentally coming onto the last straightaway at the same time as my BIL, so we all crossed the finish line together! Unfortunately they didn’t get a good picture of the three of us, but so it goes.
Post-race group selfie! My BIL looks a little squashed.
Because of the whole “forgot my bib” thing, I also completely forgot to warm up before the race. Even with all the walking my hips and left glute were pretty sore by the end of the race, but thankfully nothing lingered.
We hit the merchandise tent afterwards and I noticed a short line for a very beardy dude signing stuff. I guessed it was probably Inman or a random sasquatch pretending to be Inman, so I picked up a copy of the running book and got it and my bib signed. He was a very nice sasquatch/cartoonist and it was a very fun race.
Now I have two bibs...
Afterwards we found a great brewpub for lunch, then went back to the AirBNB for showers, followed by naps, followed by a walking tour of the Seattle underground that thankfully everyone was refreshed enough to enjoy. After that we got some fantastic seafood and then, having realized it was my husband and my fifth anniversary (thanks for the reminder, Facebook!), the two of us went out and found a bar that made a passable version of our wedding cocktail. All in all, a lovely day.
Sunday we went to Pike Place Market, which was definitely a mistake, because it was amazing and we should have gone on Friday when we were better rested. Ah well - guess we’ll have to go back! We all drove down to Portland together Sunday and we stayed with my sister and BIL for a couple of nights, then back home on Tuesday (thankfully without delays).
PHOTO DUMP!

@PastorVincent I love the race photo backdrop with the tape and runners behind you. I don't think I've ever seen the posed race photos with that before... I would like to, though.2

We actually took them before the race. There was no line that way.
But yeah, I think it is normal for races that P3R runs. Not sure if anyone else does.2 -
August goal 100 miles
Just checking in
Very little running this week after the long hike on Monday. I was VERY sore (like my worst marathon-level soreness) for 2 days, before it *started* getting better. Thursday I went for a short leisurely swim in the lake. Yesterday I did: 1k jog, 2.5k bike, 1k walk and felt ok but not great. Today I had hubby drop me off 3k away from the gym and ran there to work out. I pretty much left my legs alone in the gym but got a good strength workout out in. Judging by my pace vs. perceived running effort today, I'm still in recovery mode, and that's ok. I've done this before and can trust the process.9
