I ran 6.27 miles this morning. All in all it was a good run. It was hot. I know how you feel @zamirasoni. Sometimes I think all I do is complain about the weather, but sometimes it is just shocking how hot it can be early in the morning. And if you are in the Houston area it is probably worse there than it is here. But despite the heat I enjoyed today's run. The moon was so pretty when I started out. I tried to take a picture of it, but as usual the picture didn't really turn out that good.The new episodes of Zombie's Run were out so I played that as I ran. There were lots of zombie chases too so I like to count that as my speed work. Tomorrow will be a rest day. I usually take Friday and Saturday as rest days and then do my long run on Sunday. I'm not sure what I'll do this weekend though. Since my anniversary is on Sunday I may run on Saturday and take Sunday off. We haven't really decided what we will do to celebrate this year so I don't know if we'll celebrate on Saturday or Sunday. It will be our 29th anniversary this year. Thanks to all for the good wishes. August does seem to have a lot of anniversaries. I have 4 sisters and 3 of us have August anniversaries and there are lots in this group as well.

I imagine if you pass muster as far as looking respectable you would get off with a warning - I wouldn’t want to try it as anyone likely to be profiled.
The Penal Farm is a working prison so they do get a little touchy about the area. It’s been local tradition for decades for frat boys to test their manliness by breaking into Shelby Farms at night and tipping bison, which can be tipped just like cows. Except of course that bison will happily toss you ten feet in the air. I’ve heard many stories over the years of young people being chased by the police and running, but no stories of anyone actually getting caught. My thought is that probably the police just wish everyone would stay the heck out after dark and make their lives easier. It’s unfortunate though, since during August there’s no legal and safe place to run except during daylight hours.0 -

Right, and it would be cooler to run at night. My next marathon starts at 5am, so was hoping to get out this weekend for a long run starting that early to emulate the marathon. I surely won't be out that early running on narrow country roads here.0 -

I had to skip five runs from August 4 to 9 because I was sick with strep throat. That puts me 23.5 miles behind on my monthly goal. It was also week 2 of a 12 week 15K training plan. Anyway:
8.02: 7.0M Long Run (7.0)
8.03: Scheduled Rest Day
8.04- 8.10: Skipped (sick)
8.11: 4.5M Easy (11.5)

Can someone recommend a good pace calculator that tells you what your long runs, intervals, etc should be done at when you plug in a goal pace for a race?
Example, I want to run my 15K in October at 8:45/M which is 1:21:40 (previous 15K time was 1:22:55, 8:54 pace). What pace should my easy and long runs be? What should my intervals paces and distances be? Right now I run a pace run on Thursdays and run it between 8:40 and 8:50. Currently, my easy runs are in the 9:45 range. I've been running 8- .5M intervals at 7:41 with a 2:15 walking break in between, and my long runs have been a little over 10:00. These times are a little slow for me but the heat index has been hovering around 95-100. Despite running slow, my HR is still in the 160s for all my runs- my pace runs are in the 170s. I'm also in a calorie deficit everyday except for the day before my long runs, which usually are Fridays.2 -
Oh, I guess I broke the unwritten rule and did not announce our anniversary. Well, it was 8/4 and marked 23 years of marriage.12

Instead of thinking pace, I suggest you try doing it this way...- Long Runs - "conversational" to "Comfortably hard" - the point of these really is time on feet. You should be able to complete the entire distance and feel like you have some left in the tank.
- Intervals - These should be as hard as you can go, and still complete the work out, but no more
- Threshold run - As fast as you go and complete about an hour run, but no farther
- Pace runs - these are at your target race pace, or as close as you can get - part of the point of these is so that you learn what the race pace feels like and can judge it better in the actual race
The problem with "pace" is that weather, sleep, food, conditioning etc will impact that great and you could be pushing too hard and still not hit the pace, or hit the pace and be running too slow for an effective workout.5 -

So I have recently had several things come together in my life, healthwise, to concern me. About 2 months ago I started having intermittent neuropathy in my feet, coupled with the appearance of some bilateral lower leg swelling and what has been noted as a venous stasis ulcer on my right shin(indicative of poor blood flow). My average blood sugar,fasting, has been creeping up to about 100-110, up from the 70-80 it usually is. All of these things singly would not be concerning, but considering my family's strong history of type 2 diabetes I felt it prudent to do something about it. Fortunately God felt the same way. About 4 weeks ago the trainer I use at our local facility received a grant for the PREVENT T2 program. Much like MFP it uses support in the form of group accountability, keeping a food diary and regular weigh-ins with incentives for completing all of the year long classes. In the last few weeks I have noted that though I thought I was doing well calorie wise, that was obviously not the case. My goals are to bring my food back under the control it used to be along with running, lifting and walking. Hopefully I will not be too late in dealing with this issue....Take care everyone, and I will see you on here often

I agree!
But I am in the camp that caught it soon enough that I still can control with food and exercise alone. It is a pain, but it can be done. After a while of focused effort, it will become habit forming. You got this!3 -
I got out late due to stomach issues and probably should have just let this one go....hot, humid and yuck! Close to 90 when I got home. Fortunately the next couple of days should theoretically be a little cooler.

Morning!
Well after getting out yesterday, I thought I'd attempt a longer run today. Just ignoring the fact my quads and inside things were a bit sore.
Loaded up my pack with water, jelly beans and had a banana ready for after, intending on doing 8k, hoping to push it out to 10..
Well at the 3k mark my thighs were screaming. That's when I had to remind myself that yep, you lose a lot of condition when you don't run in 2 weeks and perhaps a 5k followed with a 6k is probably a bit much when the longest you've run in the last 2 months is only 5k.
So I turned around and ran/walked back to the car. I logged 5.2ish k and walked enough to make 6k total.
I loved getting out and have to remember to move enough to stave off DOMS. never had it from running before sigh.
So ill be sensible and have a rest tomorrow. Maybe...

8/15: TM 6mi @ near threshold pace. With last mile 95%+ effort. Last mile I did pace bumps every 0.10mi at 7.6 - 8.6mph. 8:24 overall avg. Down over 4min from 12 days ago. A little over 8min to go till PR range (42min). Having fun again.

Notes:
Ended up waking up too late yesterday to get in a run before work, so I decided to run home from the office. Manny met me at the trail near our house so I could run with him again. He went 1.42 miles this time, and quite a bit faster than on Monday. I'm going to have to keep warning him not to do too much too quickly!
Today's run was the trail run I originally planned to do yesterday. It was raining when I got home from the lab, so it was a bit of a mental struggle to get myself out the door. Once I started running though I was fine, especially since the trees kept most of the rain off me anyways! The best part of the rain is that almost no one was out there so I pretty much had the whole trail to myself!
Other good news- Officially over half way to my mileage goal for the month! About half way through the month too so I'd say I'm right on target

Tried to go out for a run after teaching. Even remembered my flashy lights... but just a few miles into I found the road blocked with fire trucks and whatnot. So turned around and did a loop through the town on roads I never been down before. Which of course you always should do in pitch black a good hour or more after sunset. 🤦♂️
Ended up with 8 miles, but at least I am not dead despite the best efforts of the potholes and tree branches!15 -
3.16 miles tonight and ZERO HIP PAIN. Felt good. I’ve been using the new Saucony shoes for these last 5 training runs and I think they make a big difference. I haven’t worn the Brooks on a run yet since I haven’t quite worked out a shoe rotation strategy. Since I’m still fairly new to running I’m interested in hearing shoe strategies from all of you.14

I haven't been very active on the group (June/July/August ) We are in the process of replacing every piece of telecom gear ( > 20,000 pieces ) in the Province of Alberta to versions that are encrypted due to Court Cases about violation of Privacy with un-encrypted voice and the " possibility " that the networks could be compromised.
Every piece needs to be programmed-tested then installed then tested again. Plus their is a wee bit of travel involved. Left Monday morning @6am - arrived at site 2pm.
I did do the Emperor's Challenge Mountain Trail HM Saturday Aug 10.
The first place finisher supposedly set a Guinness Record for the most consecutive First Place Finish's. He averages an impressive 1:27:~.
Entry capped at 1100 - on avg 1000 make the starting line and 65-80% manage to finish before the cutoffs.
They never show DNS/DNF so you never really know how many started. Every year they have 50-60 people with medical issues - commonly sprained ankles or contunusions from falls.
I am not visible in the photo but I could pick out my Blue hat 1/2 way back. I stayed close to some friends just to calm their rookie nerves at the start.
First cutoff is at the 8km Aid Station 2.5hrs
Second Cutoff is at the 14km Aid Station 3.25hrs
Finish Cutoff 4.5 hrs.

It had been raining a fair bit so what was a uphill trail turned into a creek
Last year these areas were sticky - this year pure soupy slime and sections with flowing water.
The meadow turned into a small lake
Alpine Tundra areas turned into Bogs. It may have been a Bit Foggy - ie Running in the Clouds
So much fun.
2 more years and I get my 5 year Perpetual Bib then I will run it once with the Perpetual and follow that with a volunteer year.

Had a weird experience this morning. I’m staying at my sister’s place in a different city. Slept pretty badly so headed to the small park opposite to run some laps as I don’t know the area. Felt like my usual pace for a long-ish run, fairly flat, bit of stiffness but no injuries. But my pace according to my Garmin was way off! I couldn’t believe it when I looked at some of the splits while I was running! Kept kicking up the pace a bit but it still took me an hour just to run 9km when I usually do 10km in just under an hour.
I was going to chalk it down to tiredness but looking at my step count, it’s over 11k which is what I use to cover a 10km distance. V strange! Anyway, long story short I did 5.6 miles this morning, or maybe more. Will have to see how I go on my next run on familiar territory....

Do not trust the step count unless you have a foot pod. It is just an estimate. The rest is probably you were tired and running in unknown territory. Check the GPS map. If it looks correct to where you ran, and there are no big jumps in it, then it is probably correct.3 -

Mid 60s F this morning with a light fog and a cooling breeze. Fog didn't start to lift until I was nearly finished.
Legs still hurt. I think (at least temporarily) I'm going to make Saturdays rest days, too. Suspect I may have been pushing myself a little hard during race season and I'm not recovering as I should be. We'll see how it goes.

@juliet3455 - great to have you back here! That race looks umm very challenging! but really fun if you aren't going for a specific time. Great job finishing in those conditions!
@faebert - like @PastorVincent said, I would check your Garmin map. It may have had problems connecting or staying connected or just got confused or... you were really tired and your pace suffered.

everything is a game to Joy. She's way too smart. she can open the gate, her crate, cupboards, helped me dig the garden with one paw-just like me and my garden claw. learned how to walk on a leash in 3 min with a prong collar. aerial yoga didn't even phase her with people hanging upside down5 -
@mbaker566 - I had to look up behcets disorder. Sounds like an autoimmune, lupus kind of thing and very tough to deal with. Joy sounds wonderful. Are you going to keep her? I love dogs that are so smart. They can be a challenge because they are so smart but they are so fun to train and play with.2

Hmm - the map seems to have a bit of a gap, not sure it’s enough to explain the discrepancy. But interestingly, my iphone has registered 6.8 miles from 7-8am this morning when I ran rather than 5.6m. Curious! Just hope my watch is ok - this is the first time I’ve ever really questioned it...0

i won't keep Joy. she's grown on me. she attacked my dogs on the first day but has learned to live with them. speed demon and her are good friends. but she needs someone who doesn't work as much as i do and can devote more time to her.

Notes:
Ran an easy 4 miles this morning before work. My legs were feeling really sore and heavy this morning so I kept the pace even easier than usual. Hopefully they wake up a bit before tomorrow's race! I got a sneak peak of the elevation profile for the 8K tomorrow and WOW it is going to be hilly. And the last mile is entirely uphill (125 ft elevation gain) so that should be fun! I may have to revise my goal time a bit

@emmamcgarity – I’m kind of lax about shoe rotation. Basically I wear a pair until they look worn out then I get a new pair and wear them most of the time and the old pair now and then on shorter runs until they are completely worn out. Then I just use them for puttering around the house. I think a lot of the apps (Strava, Garmin, etc.) have a feature where you can track the mileage on your shoes. Hopefully, someone who actually tracks their shoes and is organized about rotation will answer you better!
I usually do my long run on Saturdays but got it done today instead. My car indicated the temp was 65F when I finished. Not sure what the real feel or humidity was – it has been 100% at the same time the last few days. It was hot I know that. My tummy was not happy for the rest of the morning.
