rheddmobile wrote: »Ran late morning today and it was sickeningly hot, literally - my husband asked to stop because he was getting shivers and feeling like he was going to throw up. Temp was 97 and dewpoint 81, but it was mainly the complete lack of cloud cover, the sun was just too direct and the radiant heat was killer. We had planned to do 10k and I knew it would be tough, although it was only supposed to reach 88 according to the forecast, so I tried to run as easy as possible starting out. Which seems to be about 11 minute miles. First couple of miles felt okay, third mile felt hard, fourth mile I was starting to pray a little, and my husband said he was getting overheated. I said try to make it to five and we’ll quit. Going up the last hill in direct sunlight I was thinking I wouldn’t make it to five, never have two tenths of a mile seemed that long. Then we had to walk back in the baking sun and that was pretty dismal as well, so after drinking water we started running again, and ended up bringing in 10k at just under 12 minute pace after all. On the upside the very slow pace kept my Achilles’ tendon from hurting.
There was some sort of group of fit young people wearing Marines t-shirts out running after a guy carrying a flag - maybe ROTC although they looked a little old for ROTC - and half of them were walking. It was hot. Both my husband and I noticed that the bottoms of our feet hurt from the heat of the pavement going through our shoes. Ugh. I am already over August!
Yikes, that's hot! I would be toast!
I agree with you on running a race in a cemetery. Just too weird and to me it would be disrespectful.1 -
polskagirl01 wrote: »So I've got this idea...
Earlier this year I had considered, and then scrapped plans to do a 50k trail race in June. The route isn't too far from where I'm spending the summer, and after a grueling uphill over the first 10k, it looks pretty flat. I'm currently in "half marathon anytime" shape and have been training regularly, but haven't run farther than that since doing a marathon in May. The idea? To HIKE the 50k route in a day, with maybe a little easy running mixed in after I get up into the highlands, roughly aiming for 10 hours (which happens to be the cutoff were I doing the race). I feel like it's a reasonable thing given the shape I'm in... BUT I've never gone that far before. I kinda expect this group to enable, uh, I mean encourage me to go for it, but please speak up if you have advice or thoughts about it!
Haven't some of you done some all-day hiking? How did it go, compared to your running fitness?
Yes, it will be a solo/unsupported trip. I've done a lot of planning, and my hydration pack is mostly already loaded up 'cause I wanted to try it out. There will be campsites along the way for pit stops, but I'm not counting on there being drinkable water. It's point-to-point, and my car will be parked at the end, so unless there's an emergency and I have to call the Park Rangers to get me out, I'll just have to finish
The alone time might be what I'm most looking forward to.
August goal 100 miles
Went for an easy 5k this morning before church & potluck to follow.

Great race @ContraryMaryMary!0

The cemetery thing seems weird to me, but then death is a natural part of life. Many of our cultures have moved the cemeteries away, out of sight. It used to be that you passed it on the way into church. I heard someone recently talking about the trend for churches to now lean more towards entertaining, and to this person it makes sense as before, there was a visual reminder that people had deep questions about life/death - right outside the building, and the church needed to be ready to address them. Now the questions are still there, but the visual reminder has been moved away out of sight. It's interesting to think about.5

Welcome to all the new runners.
@quilteryoyo Happy Birthday!
@rheddmobile There are two rather small cemeteries within my current running distance. I run on the road next to one of them relatively often, but wouldn't go inside. It just doesn't feel right to me.
@katharmonic Congratulations! That's so inspiring.
@PastorVincent Yuck! Some days I have enough trouble concentrating in cube-ville; I couldn't imagine trying to program there.
@ariceroni Wow - congratulations!
@skippygirlsmom Aw sorry, hope you feel better now. Congrats to Skip, and I hope she is feeling better soon as well.
@ContraryMaryMary Congratulations on a great race, especially less than a week since the last one!
Friday was a rest day. Yesterday, I took the dogs out for 2.6 mile walk, then my husband and I drove up to my parents, who treated us to lunch and a spell in their hot tub. Ahhhh. Also, my mom just got herself a handheld massage unit, but it's too heavy for her so now it's ours. I think we'll both get some use out of it!
Today I was planning on running 5-6 miles. Now I'm not so sure... it is supposed to be back down into the moderate range before noon, but of course then it'll be warmer.

ContraryMaryMary wrote: »Ran the Taupo Half yesterday in some seriously wild winter weather. Gale force wind and freezing temperatures (7 degrees celsius, but felt like 2). Made for a hard day at the office. The consolation was at least it wasn't raining, which it had been, in buckets, when we arrived the night before. I wasn't expecting much considering the conditions and the fact that it had only been six days since my previous half.
We headed off with a stiff cross wind, so cold that one side of my face soon went numb. The course was an out and back along the lake front - well, sort of. I kind of lollypop shape. My legs felt good but I kept my pace in check thinking my legs would tire early considering the pounding they'd taken the weekend prior and we seemed to be going steadily downhill on what I'd assumed was a dead flat course.
Normally I'd race a half at just over five minutes per kilometre but was happy to sit at 5:15. After we'd turned, the cross wind we'd been battling became a seriously stiff tailwind at about the 15k mark, pushing us along - to the point I was thinking, "I don't want to run this fast". My pace increased to sub 5 minutes with me protesting the whole time (this went on for about four kilometres and I couldn't seem to slow down).
A kilometre 19 I thought I'd hit the wall, thanks to that unwanted speed, as my legs turned to lead as the tail wind moved back to a cross wind. But I finally figured I was climbing (insert eye roll), and while the climb was only 12 metres over 500m it was at a mentally challenging point in the race. But I soon reached the top and knew I'd survive the final 2k home.
Was blown away to record a 1:49:13 (my PB is 1:48:44, however this course was about 200m short). I also got 5th in my age group! All in all, a great day, especially once I'd had a hot shower!
Congratulations!!!! What a great half!!0 -

@rheddmobile hi! I’ll give you a quick few sentences on Skip. Since January she’s been really sick, what started off with h pylori, which they cured, turned into months of vomiting anywhere from 1 to 10 times a day. She has had every single test known to man, all negative, they thought everything from a brain tumor, to esophagus cancer to her gallbladder being bad. The vomiting slowed down but we are still trying to find out what is going on. She’s been trying to run as much as possible when she has the energy to do so. The last time she got sick was Monday so we are amazed. Keep your fingers crossed, she has never gone more than one day before. Seemed to leave just the way it started. Her doctor is sending her to Vanderbilt in Nashville to see if they can find something. She said she doesn’t want to go now, but I still want her to go. It’s been a wild 7 months. Otherwise we are good and I’m glad to be back to the running thread. Okay that was more than a few sentences ha ha
@Scott6255 thanks. I was more embarrassed than anything ha ha my friend said at least it was a trail so a few police cars weren’t following me to the end. Good point there! She’s doing well after the falls, I think the hornet bite is bothering her more. She is currently going to our local Community College and loving it. Since her old college blocked her from running at the school she was going to transfer to she decided to take the time get her basics at CC and figure out what to do from there. She talking about ultra trail running instead of running at college.
@katharmonic thanks! Happy to be back. MobyCarp’s passing made me think of everyone and I really wanted to get in touch I’ve missed everyone.

I ran 11.06 miles today. It was a really good run. It was pretty warm, the temp was 74°F feels like 75°F with humidity of 90% and a dew point of 69°. But it is August so I guess that is to be expected. I keep thinking I'll get up and get going earlier, but I can't seem to get out before 7:00 am. I guess I just stay up too late on Saturday and then I like to sleep in. I did get out early enough that there was still some shade on the route. And 7:00 on a Sunday morning is still early enough that there aren't a lot of people out and it is nice and peaceful.
Congrats on the PR @ariceroni and great race @ContraryMaryMary!

It was a gorgeous day here today, starting out in the low 60s this morning. I went to yoga on the lawn of this beautiful inn by a lake, and it was so nice to have some cooler weather for that. I actually put on long sleeves before and after. The yoga itself was good, a little tough to balance on the slightly sloping lawn. But after that, we had Bloody Marys and brunch at the gazebo bar, which was fabulous. I ate a ridiculous amount from the brunch buffet. It felt like a little mini-vacation, so fun.
I rolled myself home from that and eventually decided I better do a little more than just yoga to make up for that indulgence, so I took the dog for a long walk. It had gotten up to about 80 degrees but the humidity was low and there was a nice breeze so it felt pretty good. After I got back home and sat for a little bit I decided it was too nice not to get a run in and I was already dressed for it, so I put the trail shoes on and headed out to the park near my house. I ran a route that I usually don't run because part of the trail is a little more challenging (rocks and roots) than I usually want, but it seemed like a good idea today. And it was, mostly. A few more hills than I was really in the mood for, especially because I forgot my water, but I enjoyed the twists and turns of the trail for a change. I kept a decent pace for the conditions so I was pleased with that - thinking about next weekend's Spartan races!4 -
Forgot to post a couple runs. Same old thing. Nothing notable. Just getting them done. All is well.

@ContraryMaryMary - Brilliant on the HM! Such a great time, Congratulations!!
@skippygirlsmom - I hope Vanderbilt can figure out what is going on with the Skippy Girl. I also think it is so wrong of the school to keep her from running when they did nothing to fix the issue that caused her to leave in the first place!
I headed out relatively early for a long run this morning with a plan of running a few miles to a steep hill I know, run a few hill repeats and then home. I did that and found a couple of associated hills on side streets to run which were as steep (9-13% grade) if not steeper and devoid of all the traffic on the normal hill I run. 6 hills altogether and a grand total of just over 11 miles including a 0.5 mile walk home after my legs said no to anymore running. My legs hate me now, and my body is generally pretty tired, but I actually felt pretty darn good. Of course I jumped in the pool as soon as I got home and that seems to help with the muscle tightness and soreness.

Hi all.
Just popping in really quick. I have been pretty absent for the last half year, and only been lurking in here every once in a while. With life IRL getting busier and busier, this awesome challenge group has gotten away from me. With work, doing dad stuff (4yo is on 2 wheels on his bike now!) and being an applicant with the county rescue squad, I'm swamped. I've had 3 races so far this year, and none of them have gone how I had hoped/planned. I'm fully in training for my September race, and have a 4 day 3 night training camp coming up later this week, I'll be getting close to 60 miles between Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. Then it will be 4 weeks of crazy until I hit the trail on 9/6 for my race.
Anyway, welcome to the new folks I haven't said hi to before. Also, you are all awesome. I'll be around as much as I can, but not a whole lot, and will probably miss things. Hope all you all have had a runtastic beginning to your August!17 -

08/03: 5.61 mile trail run
08/04: 10.02 mile long run
08/05: Off, rest day
Total: 24.2 miles
Notes:
Last week was a cutback week, so I only did a 10 mile long run on Sunday instead of my usual 12-13. It's nice to be back at a place where 10 miles feels "short"! Then in the afternoon, I drove out to Baltimore to meet my new nephew Miles (he was born on saturday). He was so precious, and my brother/sister-in-law were nice enough to let me hold him for 2 hours straight
Rest day today, though I am hoping to do some core tonight. I haven't done any supplemental strength training in months and should really really get back in that habit again!
Thanks @shanaber @Scott6255 @katharmonic @rheddmobile @zeesparrow @kgirlhart , you are all too kind!
@ContraryMaryMary - awesome race! Way to persist despite the tough conditions

what the best meal you've ever had? and what's your shoe size?
Shoe size is EU39. Though over the past years I've started to buy 40 sometimes because I'm paying more attention to my poor 4th and 5th toes. When I buy shoes that are the correct size judging by the length of the big toe, those always have to bend a little, and I'm trying to avoid that now.
@skippygirlsmom Really sorry about your race! Congrats to skip for the age group win!
I would have completely freaked out about the hornets! I used to be already terrified of wasps, though it's getting better in the past years. Childhood trauma. I guess. When I was 5 years old, once we were playing with friends in the forest and one of them stepped into a nest of ground wasps. The entire swarm attacked us and chased us off. I got stung 8 times, and one of my friends had a bad allergic reaction so our parents had to call an ambulance. I used to refuse to eat outside if any wasps were around. And hornets are bigger and scarier...
@PastorVincent I've never heard of an office environment like that! I wouldn't like it at all. I like having my plants at the window and my whiteboard behind me and the stack of folders on the shelf and my coffee machine and cup on the desk, and pens and tools and hand lotion ^^. and the drawers filled with towel/soap/clothes (for when I run to work) and running clothes (for when I spontaneously decided to run home) and bike repair tools for when I have a flat tire on the way to work and chocolate and protein shakes and tea bags and a million other things. Yeah, I'm a pack rat! On the other hand, just today two different colleagues came to me, one of them looking for tape and envelopes and the other for a screwdiver. Somebody around here has to hoard all the stuff
I think it's much easier to feel "comfortable" at work if you can arrange your work space as you like it. As long as you are not starting an unsanitary collection of half-eaten pizzas or anything...
---
So far I only did one run in August, last Thursday. Didn't even upload it to Strava yet because I was travelling Friday-Sunday. And I didn't take my running clothes, on purpose. I've had a bit of trouble with my left knee recently, not only during running but also walking around the next day, so I decided this was a good opportunity to see if it would go better by not running for a week. I just forgot about that Thursday night ^^
And since this pain in the left knee is cropping up once or twice every year, I bought a book called "Ready to run" by Kelly Starrett to see if maybe some mobility work can prevent it in the future.
Did anybody else here read the book and has some experience?
I didn't get to the exercises yet, just the first part of the book. and so far I find the style of writing extremely annoying, but I'm hoping the exercise part will be better/useful. It has lots of positive reviews on amazon...

After a smoky morning walk yesterday, I found myself feeling a little off the rest of the morning. So rather than go out and run, I took a nap. Must have needed it. When I woke up, my husband and I went out to a local BBQ/brew place that opened near us recently that was fantastic! The smoked turkey was moist and flavorful, and the pulled pork was also really good. They have a coconut porter that I loved... and an absolutely decadent banana pudding to finish it off. It'll be a great place to go after long runs in the future.
This morning I took the dogs for 3.5 miles, at the end of which we picked up the pace. I dropped them off, then went back out at the same fast pace for a little ways, before I settled back into my usual. The last 1/4 mile I sped up again and logged my fastest 400m per Strava. It was fun. I love that 5 miles doesn't seem too very far for me now.9 -
My plan for today was to get out for a 5 mile recovery run but my body is feeling too beat up after yesterday's long run and hill repeats. I will be foam rolling and doing my hip/glute exercises and likely get Hobbes out for a walk before it gets too warm. I need to get in some movement before agility class tonight or I will likely be too stiff to run much there. Problem is I am not sure I can get him off the bed... 😁11

It was hot, but nice day. There was a beautiful rainbow This week is going to be hectic!
[img][/img]3 -
Today is an interview day, but I hope to sneak out for a run later, you know in the hottest part of the day when it is all done. I also get to spend time on the phone tracking down my homeowners' insurance payment was never made. Yay. I live the funnest life.
Anyways YESTERDAY was a better day. Timothy (my 15 year old son) and I went out shooting pictures of the creek and such in the area. It was a nice couple of hours without using iPhones or etc. It is nice to share a hobby with him like this. Anyways here are a few of the pictures I took (Tim is still going through his).
This last one we saw on the way back from the creek. I guess "fairy garden" does not really fit...
Ah well time to get on the phone tree with the mortgage company. Yay.9 -
@PastorVincent Is your mortgage with wells fargo? Because I have to tell them to make the payment, sometimes several times. This year they argued with me over the amount, paid less, and I got the lovely letter in the mail I was going to lose my insurance if I didn't pay the rest and had to chase down wells fargo again. And I can't pay it myself because it has to come out of escrow *insert eye roll here*0

Nope. My mortgage was just bought by some company called "My Loan Care" 🙄Just so happens that the purchase/transfer happened at the same time the payment was dues.2 -

Oh maybe. One of the addresses buried in the paperwork mentions Lakeview also. As long as they pay my taxes/insurance properly they can call themselves Bobby Boys Club or whatever they want.1
