WTG!
As frustrating as I'm finding not allowing my long runs to go over 5 miles this month, I'm sure it's the right thing for my legs. Just need to persuade my brain and make it stop doing the 'you could just cross the river and see where that track leads' thing that would inevitably add distance to routes if I didn't ignore it!
Today I mastered the slow as *kitten* run. Hormones have me all sorts of bloated and heavy this week and I really felt it for the first mile, things improved after that but I managed (for once!) to stick to a slow pace. So much so in fact that my watch autopaused itself 4 or 5 times even though I was running! Well, once I was climbing down a bank cause I was being a wimp and didn't want to get my shoes muddy on a bit of trail where a pipe had leaked. Checking my fitbit HR stats afterwards I noticed that (I think for the first time ever) I didn't go into what it calls peak zone at all. Now I'm home, have stretched and had breakfast it feels like all is right with the world. Gotta love a Saturday morning long run. Sadly the zen-like mental state will probably wear off before I finish with the weekly supermarket visit.
In other news, I signed up for the March HM that I had to pull out of this year. Pathetically excited about that.
August goal: 90km. Run so far: 12.11km.13 -

@eleanorhawkins I'm finding the hardest thing of all is to go so slow that you feel like you could go forever WHILE ALSO limiting the distance you're allowed to run.
I don't doubt that it's good for us, but it's truly daunting.9 -

Debated running more than 10k today, but a busy week at work next week means I need to save SOME energy. Might go out for a 5k tomorrow just because I probably can't do my usual routine next week.
01 Aug - 1.8 miles (treadmill)
03 Aug - 6.2 miles (outside)
8 miles/50 miles
Finally I have a chance to answer the monthly questions though!Ohhh I have a very bias monthly question .
Compare yourself now to 10, 20 and 30 years ago. What improvements do you love? What do you look forward too? What do you miss and how do you deal with that? Follow up with what would your 15 year old self think of you today.
ETA I think @MobyCarp would have loved this topic.
Well 30 years ago I wasn't even 2 years old so I don't remember much. Probably excitedly waiting for the arrival of my baby sister!
20 years ago I would have been 11 and just about to start secondary school. I am way less shy and quiet than I was then (although I am not what you would call outgoing now), but was probably just as anxious and in to exercise/running/sports then as much as I am now. Running helped the anxiousness though and still does.
10 years ago I would have been a few months in to dating the man who is now my husband and also just about to start university after a break from education. In a few short years I would become lazy and overeat and gain a bunch of weight which made me dislike myself a LOT. I do miss being so carefree though and the lack of responsibility I had a 21.
My 15 year old self would probably be a bit indifferent to be honest. I never had any big plans/aims growing up so I'm probably about where I would have expected to be.what the best meal you've ever had? and what's your shoe size?
I don't have a best meal - or at least can't think of one. Basically anything my Mum cooks! And I'm a UK 5.
PHEW! That was long. Hope you're all having a great weekend.7 -
@katharmonic That is so awesome and a great picture too! You definitely look like an athlete!0

Thanks so much, all! It was so nice and I felt like a minor celebrity at the gym Friday morning
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
08/01/19 :::: 3.6 :::: 3.6
08/02/19 :::: 4.1 :::: 7.7
08/03/19 :::: 10.2 :::: 17.8
I feel like I finally got in a decent long run today. Lots of friends out running today and we were not fast, but it was easier than it has been the past few weeks. Mentally I needed to get to that 10-mile mark again to feel more confident about how training is going.
I also tried out a new hydration vest, which I bought for the upcoming Spartan races in case it is hot those days. I don't really want to wear it, but if the temps are high I probably will. It went okay. I think I preferred it over holding a bottle in my hand.9 -
8-1 3.5k slow
8-2 3.5k easy
8-3 4k slow
August Total: 11k
August Goal: 150k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
May Total: 128k
June Total: 161.5k
July Total: 151k
Monthly average: 148.5k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Today proved that old people cannot run 3.5k; drive 2 hours; play 18 holes of golf; sleep in a hotel; drive 2 hours; and then expect to run well. Leg were like lead and I had no energy at all. Was lucky to even do 4k.
BUT...I've had slumps like this before and have learned to not get discouraged. Embrace the days you run well; and embrace the days you don't!
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K - 31:34 chip time; 31/77 overall; second male 65 and older (no official category)
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K - 31:11 chip time; 95/141 overall; 4/6 age group (male)
8-31 Race for Freedom 5k
9-14 Gift of Life 5k11 -
Very cool @katharmonic that you were the featured athlete of the month!! Yes, YOU ARE an athlete!
13.1 miles this morning. Woke up and looked at radar. Surprised to see rain heading our way. Thought to wait until it passed, but after an hour the radar showed we were in the middle of the storm, but was barely sprinkling. So headed out. It literally felt like running in soup. Was just sprinkling, but was so humid I could barely breath. Then after about 5 miles, the sky opened up, and poured so hard I could barely see. Ran through ankle deep water many times. I usually avoid water puddles and such, but after a while, it was fun just to run though them and not care. Felt like a kid again.

Goal: Run 3x/week
8/3--2 miles First run of the month and first run in over 3 weeks. Run felt great. Some tightness in my left glute, but after a couple of minutes of running the tightness loosened up. Hip feels great.
7 -
I haven’t set my August goal yet since I’m not sure completely what is appropriate while dealing with my hip. So I’ll set a goal later. I’m thinking 40 miles might be appropriate as long as I keep the pace right.
I went to Parkrun this morning since the hip is so much improved. I didn’t push myself since I don’t want to be sidelined again. This was my first run on the new shoes (Saucony ISO Ride). I could definitely feel an improvement in my hip and legs with the shoes. My goals for the week will be easy runs and continued strength training/foam rolling. I’ll plan to use the Saucony for at least a week before rotating in the Ghosts.8 -
@polskagirl01 - I would say do it too but maybe @girlinahat is lurking and could offer some insights? I now she does a ton of hiking and long distances.
@rheddmobile - my first thought was ehhh - not sure about a race in a cemetery but then as I read others' comments I felt more ok with the idea. It also occurred to me that some of the kids may have parents buried there and might have thought that would be a nice way to 'include' them?
@katharmonic - Oh! That is SO awesome!! and yes you are definitely an athlete and an amazing one at that! Be sure you get one of those flyers to save!
@emmacgarity - have you also tried some gluten and hip exercises and stretches? I find they also make a huge difference and keep my hips happy (always good to have happy hips - right? 🤣)
I got my first run in yesterday, early early for me, before I headed to the gym for a make up strength training session. I missed it on Thursday as I spent the day at art festivals near the beach here instead. After all the time on my feet on Thursday I wasn't sure how the run would feel but it was so beautiful out, low 60's with the marine layer burning off so a bit cloudy. Since it was cooler I was able to take Hobbes the Vizsla with me and he loved getting out for a run again. I was a bit short on time and planned for 3 miles plus warm up so took it a bit like a tempo run. I had some problems getting my watch unpaused, where it showed it was and then it wasn't so there was at least one large chunk missing and Strava was sure I flew right over all the houses and up to the trail. I think based on previous similar runs it was about 4.28 miles but have no idea the overall pace but guessing it was somewhere around 11:30 with the 3 miles post warm up around 10:30. Not the fastest but much faster than I can run in the heat. Of course my trainer had lots of legs in the workout (deep squat thrusts to calf raise!). It felt fine at the time but I am feeling it now and know I need some time on the foam roller. No run for me today as I had an early hair appointment and it is going to be super hot today. I will get my long run in tomorrow as it should be a bit cooler (85 instead of 95!). I am hoping to get in the pool and try some aqua running later this evening once the sun isn't so direct.5 -
No new run yet, but had another Job Interview yesterday. UGH. Not sure about this one. I do not understand why people think things like this make sense. The job would be in a tall office tower, one of the tallest in the city. On most of the floors, there are rooms filled with free-standing desks. When you show up in the morning you find an empty desk and take it. When you leave at the end of the day you take all your things with you. The next morning you need to find a new desk unless you manage your schedule well to get the same one again. The guy was like "Yeah, I have the best luck on floor 18 and 26..." - yes they wander floors until they find a space.

@pastorvincent - my old company's main office in Texas was like that. They fashioned if after office spaces in Europe. Everyone hated it and I was so happy I didn't have to work there. It was so bad most everyone decided to start working from home so then they mandated that everyone had to be in the office and could only work for home 1 day/week unless you lived more than 30 miles from the office! Also it was incredibly noisy. Even though everyone used headphones the majority of the work involved meetings and conference calls because people were all over the world. So everyone was talking even if you couldn't hear the others on the call. Oh and there were just a handful of very small conference rooms for no more than 4 people. They had to be schedule way in advance and were typically taken by Sr. Managers doing things that required privacy (client negotiations, personnel matters, etc.). Not an ideal way to work if you had things to do that required concentration and focus!0

@shanaber Software development is a high focus task where you are working several streams of thought simultaneously. So yeah. A good fit that environment I am sure! hashtag grrr.0

August Running
08/01: 4.03 mile easy run
08/02: 4.55 miles - 2M race + 1M race + wu/cd
08/03: 5.61 mile trail run
Total: 14.18 miles
Notes:
Last night was the Going Green track meet hosted by my local running club. This time they ran a 2 mile and 1 mile so I decided to do both. I had dinner wayyy too close to race time, and felt nauseous during the whole 2 mile race. With two laps to go, I felt like I was going to throw up so I slowed down a bit to try to keep my dinner down. Unfortunately it didn't quite work, and with literally 150m left of the race, I had to run off the track to throw up in the bushes I managed to finish the 2 mile in 14:54 despite that 20+ second detour, fast enough for 1st in my AG but slow enough at the end to still have some energy left in my legs for the 1M (which was the race I was really targeting anyways- I wanted a new PR).
50 minutes later, it was time for the mile. I finished that one in 6:39.3- 2 seconds faster than three weeks ago so I met my goal of a PR in that distance! I also did a much better job pacing myself than last time and had a really good kick at the end. I finished with a tiny bit left in the tank (I was honestly a little paranoid that I'd make myself puke again), so I think if I had started my kick a bit sooner I could have cut another two or three seconds off. 7th female and 2nd in my AG for this one! I’m so proud of my progress, and can’t wait to get faster still! Unfortunately this was the last track meet of the year so I won't have another shot until next summer.
My legs, quads especially, were really sore when I woke up this morning. Saturdays for me are easy runs with the trail running group. It's a small group, usually just 2-4 of us, and the other members are all older (60+) so we keep the pace nice and easy. We did our usual "five mile" loop (it's billed as 5 miles, actually 5.6), and the combo of trail + super relaxed pace was was exactly what my legs needed!

Ran the Skunk Ape 10 mile trail race today. Ugh. This was brutal. I actually got picked up by the sweep. At like mile 8 going uphill I bonked and my head started swimming. I just sat right down didn’t want to fall down the side of the mountain 😁. I tried running with mio electrolyte in my water. I’ve used it before but I think it was making me sick to my stomach. I feel like crap but home laying in bed.
On a bright note, Skip finished first in her Age Group. This was the 3rd race in a 4 races series with increasing distances. She was won her Age Group each race. On her bad note she fell twice and is pretty scratched up. She was running in a sports bra with her hydration pack so it’s her side, hip, elbow, knees. Also here’s a new one, a swarm of hornets or something attacked her and runners by her. She got stung on the butt, one guy was stung 3 times on his legs. Insane.13 -
@PastorVincent - the company I worked for was an IT company so yes, understand the requirements for programming... I definitely couldn't do it, or anything else in that kind of environment. Management thought it would promote collaboration - nope!
@ariceroni - Congratulations on your AG wins and PR but sorry you got sick. Very impressed you could still come back for the win!
@skippygirlsmom - Boo for you, hope you are ok and not getting sick! Yay for the Skippy Girl! I hope her scrapes and scratches are nothing serious. The hornets must have thought they were being threatened or maybe someone went through their nest area. I am actually terrified of them so I would be running even faster! Note- I have missed you and the Skippy Girl!1 -
A short run in the evening after resting my knee all day as I twisted it a bit playing padel last night. Only 2.5km, but quite fast, and lovely temperatures. I wish I could run in the evening all the time, but when I'm at work I'm just so tired when I get home.
@skippygirlsmom the hornets sound terrifying! I did a race last year through a forest and there was a swarm of wasps after someone ran over the nest, it was awful! Everyone just scattered in any direction, am sure the forest took some damage 😣. Glad you're both OK (even though your race sounds super tough).7 -
August goal 30
8/2 +1.5 mi
Total so far 3.55 -
@ariceroni - WTG on your AG wins and PR. Super impressed that you won even after taking a puke break! 🤮 (And that 6:39 just happens to be my mile PR too! I plan on improving that as well since it was in the heat of summer and was mile 6 of a 10K)
@skippygirlsmom - so sorry for your bonk! But it happens. Don't worry about it.
Very happy to hear that Skip is doing well in her running, but my sympathies for the fall and HORNETS! YIKES! Hope she has found her way at the new school. Miss her (and your) updates!3 -
@Tramboman good attitude in embracing the good and bad days and not getting discouraged. Definitely not surprising to have a bad day after all that.
Great run this morning @Scott6255 - sometimes that run in the rain is just plain fun (when it's not too cold and miserable).
@shanaber my legs and glutes are pretty sore right now too from yesterday's strength training and this morning's run. Some aqua running sounds really nice but I could go for a massage and a hot tub.
@PastorVincent that sounds like a miserable environment, I can't imagine. Hope your next ones are more promising.
@ariceroni so sorry about the puking but way to go on the AG finish! Impressive comeback!
@skippygirlsmom - I don't think I've said, but great to see you around here again. Sorry you felt so bad, hope you are doing better now. Congrats to Skip - but crazy about the hornets. Ouch!
4 -
@katharmonic Way to go on the feature!
@ariceroni Honestly it’s pretty cool that you puked and won the AG anyway. That’s hardcore.
@skippygirlsmom have missed you! How’s the Skipster? Good to hear you are both still running.
Thanks everyone for the input on the cemetery race. Having a race seems a little odd, but I think it’s picturing the scheduled bounce house and face painting right outside the funeral home that seems the weirdest. In any case I don’t believe the dead would mind, so if the living are cool with it, I guess I am too. The first funeral I ever went to as a child was right at the chapel where the race starts. I think I will skip this one because I just can’t imagine it being anything other than super weird for me.6 -
Ran late morning today and it was sickeningly hot, literally - my husband asked to stop because he was getting shivers and feeling like he was going to throw up. Temp was 97 and dewpoint 81, but it was mainly the complete lack of cloud cover, the sun was just too direct and the radiant heat was killer. We had planned to do 10k and I knew it would be tough, although it was only supposed to reach 88 according to the forecast, so I tried to run as easy as possible starting out. Which seems to be about 11 minute miles. First couple of miles felt okay, third mile felt hard, fourth mile I was starting to pray a little, and my husband said he was getting overheated. I said try to make it to five and we’ll quit. Going up the last hill in direct sunlight I was thinking I wouldn’t make it to five, never have two tenths of a mile seemed that long. Then we had to walk back in the baking sun and that was pretty dismal as well, so after drinking water we started running again, and ended up bringing in 10k at just under 12 minute pace after all. On the upside the very slow pace kept my Achilles’ tendon from hurting.
There was some sort of group of fit young people wearing Marines t-shirts out running after a guy carrying a flag - maybe ROTC although they looked a little old for ROTC - and half of them were walking. It was hot. Both my husband and I noticed that the bottoms of our feet hurt from the heat of the pavement going through our shoes. Ugh. I am already over August!10 -
DANG...A 55-year-old ultra-runner has become the fastest woman to travel by foot between John O'Groats and Land's End.
Sharon Gayter said she felt "about 105" but was "relieved" after covering the 822 miles in 12 days, 11 hours, 6 minutes, and 7 seconds.

Ran the Taupo Half yesterday in some seriously wild winter weather. Gale force wind and freezing temperatures (7 degrees celsius, but felt like 2). Made for a hard day at the office. The consolation was at least it wasn't raining, which it had been, in buckets, when we arrived the night before. I wasn't expecting much considering the conditions and the fact that it had only been six days since my previous half.
We headed off with a stiff cross wind, so cold that one side of my face soon went numb. The course was an out and back along the lake front - well, sort of. I kind of lollypop shape. My legs felt good but I kept my pace in check thinking my legs would tire early considering the pounding they'd taken the weekend prior and we seemed to be going steadily downhill on what I'd assumed was a dead flat course.
Normally I'd race a half at just over five minutes per kilometre but was happy to sit at 5:15. After we'd turned, the cross wind we'd been battling became a seriously stiff tailwind at about the 15k mark, pushing us along - to the point I was thinking, "I don't want to run this fast". My pace increased to sub 5 minutes with me protesting the whole time (this went on for about four kilometres and I couldn't seem to slow down).
A kilometre 19 I thought I'd hit the wall, thanks to that unwanted speed, as my legs turned to lead as the tail wind moved back to a cross wind. But I finally figured I was climbing (insert eye roll), and while the climb was only 12 metres over 500m it was at a mentally challenging point in the race. But I soon reached the top and knew I'd survive the final 2k home.
Was blown away to record a 1:49:13 (my PB is 1:48:44, however this course was about 200m short). I also got 5th in my age group! All in all, a great day, especially once I'd had a hot shower!14 -
@ContraryMaryMary amazing! Sounds like a great race!
I did a lovely 5k along the coast this morning, then got straight in the sea, which is just the BEST way to cool.down and recover! Plus we swam off the rocks so were surrounded by fish of all shapes and sizes, such a lovely start to the morning! Have a good 4th August everyone!

polskagirl01 wrote: »So I've got this idea...
Earlier this year I had considered, and then scrapped plans to do a 50k trail race in June. The route isn't too far from where I'm spending the summer, and after a grueling uphill over the first 10k, it looks pretty flat. I'm currently in "half marathon anytime" shape and have been training regularly, but haven't run farther than that since doing a marathon in May. The idea? To HIKE the 50k route in a day, with maybe a little easy running mixed in after I get up into the highlands, roughly aiming for 10 hours (which happens to be the cutoff were I doing the race). I feel like it's a reasonable thing given the shape I'm in... BUT I've never gone that far before. I kinda expect this group to enable, uh, I mean encourage me to go for it, but please speak up if you have advice or thoughts about it!
Haven't some of you done some all-day hiking? How did it go, compared to your running fitness?
