Less Alcohol - SEPTEMBER 2019 - One Day at a Time

Ugh.....need to drink more water.
Not sure why it seems like such a hard thing to do these past few weeks. Has nothing to do with alcohol since I have not had any since August 25.
Got to work on this TODAY. H20 H20 H20
I really don't like water. I force myself to drink it, but it is a chore. I have had 2 glasses today so far, but it really bloats me. Finally get to move on to coffee. If I wasn't consciously trying to drink water it would be coffee first always.0 -
I drank a little more than I usually do last Friday and I had a few beers last Saturday but nothing since. I don't want to drink during the week because I have to get up so early to drive the kids to school. I have a part time job at night and I work pretty late. Basically, I haven't had time to drink, so that's a plus. I find I drink mostly when I'm bored or don't have anything to do the next day. I work tomorrow afternoon so I'll probably drink a few tonight but not much.
I still don't really want to go totally AF because I find that when I don't drink at all, I give myself a pass to eat as much junk food as I want (and for some reason exercise less often). I know junk food still isn't as bad for you as alcohol but I was one of the few that actually gained weight when I didn't drink. So as long as I can keep the drinking to a minimum, I'm fine with it for now. If it becomes a problem, I'll do another 30 day AF challenge.6 -
I found out about a cool new beverage. I will try to get a photo or link for it later and will post it. Very exciting and might be a great booze replacement. Infused with Chrystals!?2
-
Yes @BuffMom84
I also find that when I have something happening the next day that I either want to be ultra-sharp for, or look good for, that it is easier to be AF.3 -

Me too! The water I have at home is mega-filtered but it bloats me and I don't know why! If I buy Pellegrino water, which has a tiny bit of minerals, this never happens. I also find if I drink it room temperature, it goes down easier. Now to de-bloat, I do find hot water with lemon outstanding, I just keep forgetting to prepare it. Do look forward to hearing more about new drinks that are great booze replacements too!3 -

Hi @globalhiker
Do we surmise that you hike around the globe?
As for de-bloating, or trying to, I heard that bananas are good, so I started trying to have at least a half of a banana, sometimes with some almond butter dabbed on the slices. Lol, I have had a banana on the counter for a few days, right now with my tomatoes being so perfect I have been having a tomato sandwich after a few hours of being up. Luckily I like really ripe bananas, so maybe will have a half tomorrow.
I make a 1 or 2 gallon glass dispenser (I am still confused about measurements having grown up with feet and inches, and the metric system coming here to Canada after I was already finished high school so I apologize if I don't know the volume of my dispenser) from when the first herbs come up in my garden each year, adding like cucumber, ginger, lemon...whatever. I was making it with mint until the mint was coming to an end, the last couple of batches I have made with Parsley from my garden. It is a way for me to get at least another 500ml (2 cups) in per day, I sort of down it.
Ah yes, that new drink! Looks expensive and doesn't ship to Canada. My best friend lives just across the border in Idaho, 45 minutes away, so i might order one and have it sent to her house. I will add the link. Pretty interested, we want beverages that do something for us.1 -
Here is the url to that new drink:

Here are the elements:
https://rockgrace.com/adaptogens
I didn't know how to put that in so that it could be clicked on, I tried : - P
Looks like rosewater is the base:
https://rockgrace.com/botanicals
It says:
Next Generation Drinking
Raise your vibe with the only premium non-alcoholic beverage that combines energy, wellness, and style
It looks nice by the photography!
Here is the page about the crystals infused in it (not sure that crystals can really be infused into a drink but whatever, our minds are powerful)

As usual, I am going to work on 4-5 AF days per week.
I managed 18AF days out of 31 for August somehow.
I am going away the last week of September and first week of October, and I will be in a bathing suit every day, so am wanting to rack up lots of AF days before that.
September 01 - Sunday 5 drinks! (Saturday between 1pm and 1am at the music festival I had 7 drinks and didn't even throw up strangely). Drinks 2 days in a row is such a no-no, it makes it become normal to have drinks on the 3rd day 4th day etc. But I won't.
September 02 - AF
September 03 - AF - my "scheduled" day to have drinks, but there is ice skating at one of the arenas tomorrow and I haven't skated since April, so, well, I don't want to have a hangover or anything and fall and break my head : - P
September 04 - AF - I was invited over to a friend's house for some wine, but declined. Skating was exhilarating today, even though it took me a few times around to get comfortable. Definitely didn't want to wreck the added calorie burn by having drinks.
September 05 - 3 drinks. Feeling so much different than yesterday. My second sleepless night this week and a stressful workday coupled with Anxiety that I just couldn't seem to meditate away even though I ran (drove) to the lake after work for a float under a cloudless clear blue sky with sparkling glass-like water and some deep breaths. Sleep deprivation is crappy. I realize that booze probably doesn't help Anxiety, but it has somehow tonight numbed me and relaxed me. Still using booze as a crutch I guess, although I tried other things first. Not going to beat myself up. Us humans can be so fragile! If only I could skate every day... : - )
September 06 - AF
September 07 - AF - I didn't intend to be, but I burned over 1100 calories through exercise and didn't want that to be wasted, so stayed AF
September 08 - 3 drinks - next planned drinks, Tuesday
September 09 - AF
September 10 - 3 drinks Tuesday. I didn't have enough to eat I guess and really felt it, thought that I was going to puke but didn't. I drank a lot of water after the drinks, so actually feel okay now. Time to rack up some more AF days.
September 11 - AF - Skated today, but with having drinks last night I didn't really feel that steady.
September 12 - 2 drinks, just couldn't have the 3rd which is unusual for me. Too tired to even make a 3rd drink. Long workday today, I must say that it was nice to have a couple of cocktails. Off to bed early.
September 13 - 2 drinks + an AF beer. Really, I never drink beer, but am glad that I bought that 6-pack of Labbatt AF to put in the fridge. I think that I have had 2 of them now. I wanted one more drink but didn't really feel like having more alcohol, and definitely did not want water. Broke the "never have drinks 2 days in a row" thing. But also didn't have my 3rd drink 2 days in a row. Faulty thinking, but whatever. 2 weeks of barely any sleep, have a hard time shutting off my brain even though my body is super tired. Maybe my discipline goes out the window, although I have been low on calories. Perhaps I will make the 4 AF days per week this week, maintained the 5 AF days for the week last week. Weekend, no big pressing events to look good or feel sharp. Just need to continue to work on harvesting and processing my garden tomorrow.
Running total: 7 AF days out of 13 days so far4 -
0 drinks so far6

Great job everyone! Love seeing the posts here everyday. I thought about drinking several times last night but chose to stick with my plan. Still plan to have 2-3 tonight.
Listened to an older TED talk yesterday from Kristen McGonigal (or something close to that) about stress and our perception of it. Basic message: Instead of perceiving stress as bad or as an anxious feeling, try to perceive it as being excited and your body gearing up to face the challenge. Been trying to remember that.
Have a great weekend, all!

I guess it was the slightly cool temps here that switched my mind set off of drinking my water. I have my own well and the water is delish. The thing is, I fill my own containers at home and know I should drink at least 4 bottles per day as a regular routine. But if I am out and about I WILL NOT buy water or drink town water. Spoiled well water drinker I am! Lol
I am also a huge coffee drinker ( which I know dehydrates more than hydrates even though it is water based)
Have to tell you there is alot of upkeep to owning a body. 🤓
Hope everyone is having there own successes this weekend.8 -
Long tiring dragon boat race day yesterday! I brought a 4 pack of individual Pinot Grigios in plastic bottles for the post-race celebration.( No worries about breakage in transport, and you can’t screw up a Pinot Grigio!) I planned on max two, but wound up having only one and sharing the rest! I was starting to feel the effects of my one glass so I just nursed it. Hubby and I were too tired for the after party.
So far 6 AF days out of 14, but most of those days were only one drink, so that’s a win in my book.6 -
@globalhiker sorry to hear you don’t like water. Does it just taste bad out of the tap? That’s the worst. Then you are stuck with buying your water.
I’m curious that it bloats you! I wonder if whatever it’s treated with isn’t past or the problem. Water is supposed to de-bloat people.1 -
Is there room for more people here? Looking for support on this journey. Recognize that alcohol has been the #1 domino-if I can control my alcohol intake better, I can sleep more, have better energy and make better choices - not to mention have more time to do things like food prep for the next day! Today is day 5 AF, and though I’m not sure I’m AF for life, I’m definitely AF for the foreseeable future.12

Welcome @sadie60005 We always have room for anyone that wants to join in. If you take a look to page one of this thread there is a ton of helpful information to get you started in YOUR right direction to drinking less.
Congrats on your day 5AF.
I refer to myself as someone who "drinks rarely". Because I won't take on the heavy load of claiming to be a total non-drinker
Thank you @dodea48 we welcome any words of inspiration you have. 😊

@MissMay "drinks rarely" is a perfect goal for me. The weight of being a total non-drinker seems way more difficult. I checked out the first page - there's so much there. Thank you for recommending it!7

My destination to be a person who drinks rarely first began probably 5 years ago. That was with me having a talk in my own head to myself after a blackout the night before. Then it was a slow process with having a non drinking day maybe once a week or 3 times a month. The more I took a step to cut a drink here or there or to cut the number I consumed nightly have all bundled into where I am now. BIGGEST PLUS was finding this thread in full bloom in mid January of 2018. I have been on here ever since with no regrets.
You will do well!7 -

Welcome! Always room for new people and will support you with your goals--whether to go AF for a while, forever, or just reduce intake. You're off to an awesome start!2 -
I didn't really know if I'd ever do a second 10k (first one was 15 years ago, but I did it!

My plan is to have more AF days than drinking days each month. I will need to build up several in a row for September since I am starting my tracking on the 7th.
9/7 - AF
9/8 - AF
9/9 - AF
9/10 - AF
9/11 - 2 bottles Michelob Ultra
9/12 - AF
9/13 - 2 vodka/soda
9/14 - 1 Mich Ultra, 2/3 bottle of red wine, and an after dinner bourbon. We had dinner with some friends and they like bourbon or scotch after dinner. I decided to join in. Never again. I got up early and had a productive day, but had a headache the whole day. Been drinking lots of water and am planning to rack up lots of AF days this week.
9/15 - AF
Tally AF - 6 of 9 days

September 15 - 3 drinks. no reason to have drinks really, just did. I have had 2 glasses of water since. I have had a couple of weeks of sleep deprivation, not that it is an excuse, but the few days that I was able to actually fall asleep were days where I had alcohol. I hope to do well when I am in Dallas for 2 weeks. I had tentatively booked an all-inclusive (much cheaper than Dallas) but I struggle so much with my weight loss and putting in some AF days every week that I knew that the all-inclusive option was only going to be setting me up for failure. Not that I will never do an all-inclusive again, but maybe after another 20 pounds down on the scale. Anyone here live in Dallas btw? Or have been to Dallas and know some great places to visit? There are 8 arenas with public skating 2-3 times per day 7 days a week, so y'all know that I will be ice skating every day (packing my skates in my suitcase since rental skates don't make me skate my best, and people hear that you are from Canada and expect you to be steady on your blades). I would be tickled pink if someone is from the area and wants to skate with me : - )
Running total: 8 AF days out of 15 days so far5 -
Oh, and...mostly going to lay by the fabulous pool and read books on my Kindle for my vacay (and go to 2 NHL games, and skate of course.) So so so need a vacation where it will be impossible for me to do anything but relax and step away from the daily grind. One more week until I go. Starting to get excited!8

Hi everyone! Happy Monday. I’m really dragging today. Hoping I will feel more awake in a bit.
I followed my plan this weekend and had a few drinks on Saturday. Funny but I’m not even sure I enjoyed drinking. I wasn’t out with other people so that may have been why. Something for me to ponder.

I pop in to this thread, verbalize a commitment, and then disappear for a few months at a time. I'm so tired of the cycle. I haven't successfully stopped my weekend binges and I've gained a lot of weight.
But I'm going to be forty in a few months and I dont' want to enter my next decade a binge drinker. I want to return to the old me-the one at a healthy weight who was running 5ks and aiming for her first 10k. Now I can't run hardly at all. I used to curl up and read on weekends, not sit my *kitten* in front of the tv and drink and eat and drink and eat.
Today when I weighed myself I knew it would upset me-I obviously could tell by the way I had trouble buckling my belt. But I really need to commit and STICK to it. I'm getting married in a year and I want to look fanstastic for it. So I'm going to say that this past Saturday was my last binge and I'm going to aim for AF for the remainder of September and see how I'm feeling then.11
