Less Alcohol - SEPTEMBER 2019 - One Day at a Time

Other than a drink here or there I abstain most of the year but it's OCTOBERFEST and WINEFEST time of the year baby! I never get crazy, only partake on the weekends but you have to enjoy life sometime.6
-
@htimpaired Just keep posting every day, whether you drink or not. Accountability baby.3
-
@dawnbgethealthy your vacation sounds delightful. I am excited for you to skate your butt off. I have no input for Dallas...never been. Would like to if I could.2

htimpaired wrote: »I pop in to this thread, verbalize a commitment, and then disappear for a few months at a time. I'm so tired of the cycle. I haven't successfully stopped my weekend binges and I've gained a lot of weight.
But I'm going to be forty in a few months and I dont' want to enter my next decade a binge drinker. I want to return to the old me-the one at a healthy weight who was running 5ks and aiming for her first 10k. Now I can't run hardly at all. I used to curl up and read on weekends, not sit my *kitten* in front of the tv and drink and eat and drink and eat.
Today when I weighed myself I knew it would upset me-I obviously could tell by the way I had trouble buckling my belt. But I really need to commit and STICK to it. I'm getting married in a year and I want to look fanstastic for it. So I'm going to say that this past Saturday was my last binge and I'm going to aim for AF for the remainder of September and see how I'm feeling then.
Welcome back. Of course I remember you. Make today the tie breaker. You have so much fun stuff ahead from what you describe. GO FOR IT! We are here for and with you.5 -

My plan is to have more AF days than drinking days each month. I will need to build up several in a row for September since I am starting my tracking on the 7th.
9/7 - AF
9/8 - AF
9/9 - AF
9/10 - AF
9/11 - 2 bottles Michelob Ultra
9/12 - AF
9/13 - 2 vodka/soda
9/14 - 1 Mich Ultra, 2/3 bottle of red wine, and an after dinner bourbon. We had dinner with some friends and they like bourbon or scotch after dinner. I decided to join in. Never again. I got up early and had a productive day, but had a headache the whole day. Been drinking lots of water and am planning to rack up lots of AF days this week.
9/15 - AF
9/16 -AF
Tally AF - 7 of 10 days4 -
As usual, I am going to work on 4-5 AF days per week.
I managed 18AF days out of 31 for August somehow.
I am going away the last week of September and first week of October, and I will be in a bathing suit every day, so am wanting to rack up lots of AF days before that.
September 01 - Sunday 5 drinks! (Saturday between 1pm and 1am at the music festival I had 7 drinks and didn't even throw up strangely). Drinks 2 days in a row is such a no-no, it makes it become normal to have drinks on the 3rd day 4th day etc. But I won't.
September 02 - AF
September 03 - AF - my "scheduled" day to have drinks, but there is ice skating at one of the arenas tomorrow and I haven't skated since April, so, well, I don't want to have a hangover or anything and fall and break my head : - P
September 04 - AF - I was invited over to a friend's house for some wine, but declined. Skating was exhilarating today, even though it took me a few times around to get comfortable. Definitely didn't want to wreck the added calorie burn by having drinks.
September 05 - 3 drinks. Feeling so much different than yesterday. My second sleepless night this week and a stressful workday coupled with Anxiety that I just couldn't seem to meditate away even though I ran (drove) to the lake after work for a float under a cloudless clear blue sky with sparkling glass-like water and some deep breaths. Sleep deprivation is crappy. I realize that booze probably doesn't help Anxiety, but it has somehow tonight numbed me and relaxed me. Still using booze as a crutch I guess, although I tried other things first. Not going to beat myself up. Us humans can be so fragile! If only I could skate every day... : - )
September 06 - AF
September 07 - AF - I didn't intend to be, but I burned over 1100 calories through exercise and didn't want that to be wasted, so stayed AF
September 08 - 3 drinks - next planned drinks, Tuesday
September 09 - AF
September 10 - 3 drinks Tuesday. I didn't have enough to eat I guess and really felt it, thought that I was going to puke but didn't. I drank a lot of water after the drinks, so actually feel okay now. Time to rack up some more AF days.
September 11 - AF - Skated today, but with having drinks last night I didn't really feel that steady.
September 12 - 2 drinks, just couldn't have the 3rd which is unusual for me. Too tired to even make a 3rd drink. Long workday today, I must say that it was nice to have a couple of cocktails. Off to bed early.
September 13 - 2 drinks + an AF beer. Really, I never drink beer, but am glad that I bought that 6-pack of Labbatt AF to put in the fridge. I think that I have had 2 of them now. I wanted one more drink but didn't really feel like having more alcohol, and definitely did not want water. Broke the "never have drinks 2 days in a row" thing. But also didn't have my 3rd drink 2 days in a row. Faulty thinking, but whatever. 2 weeks of barely any sleep, have a hard time shutting off my brain even though my body is super tired. Maybe my discipline goes out the window, although I have been low on calories. Perhaps I will make the 4 AF days per week this week, maintained the 5 AF days for the week last week. Weekend, no big pressing events to look good or feel sharp. Just need to continue to work on harvesting and processing my garden tomorrow.
September 14 - AF - Felt like having drinks, but didn't.
September 15 - 3 drinks. no reason to have drinks really, just did. I have had 2 glasses of water since. I have had a couple of weeks of sleep deprivation, not that it is an excuse, but the few days that I was able to actually fall asleep were days where I had alcohol. I hope to do well when I am in Dallas for 2 weeks. I had tentatively booked an all-inclusive (much cheaper than Dallas) but I struggle so much with my weight loss and putting in some AF days every week that I knew that the all-inclusive option was only going to be setting me up for failure. Not that I will never do an all-inclusive again, but maybe after another 20 pounds down on the scale. Anyone here live in Dallas btw? Or have been to Dallas and know some great places to visit? There are 8 arenas with public skating 2-3 times per day 7 days a week, so y'all know that I will be ice skating every day (packing my skates in my suitcase since rental skates don't make me skate my best, and people hear that you are from Canada and expect you to be steady on your blades). I would be tickled pink if someone is from the area and wants to skate with me : - )
September 16 - AF
Running total: 9 AF days out of 16 days so far2 -

My husband talks about us going on these all-inclusive vacations all the time. A married couple we know(hubbies favorite couple) take them every year he reminds me. I always rebuttal with the fact that I am not going some place to destroy in 7 days what took me over 7 months to prepare for ( eating and drink wise).
Then he says....well you can order the drinks and I will drink them. Once again, I am not a prude, but I can stay at home and watch him pass out on the sofa from drinking too much and it won't cost me 2k to do it.
Plus the married couple both consume wayyyyyyyyy to much and she is resting her eyes more than keeping them open when ever we get together. small vent here
I want a vacation to do what I can not at home and to make memories of. Once again @dawnbgethealthy your skating vacation sounds wonderful.

Sleeping well but still feeling so tired. I’m not as bad as yesterday though. I have my spin class tonight - hoping that will give me some energy this week. I have two presentations at work to do so want to be on the top of my game.
I am going out with a friend on Weds. I do not want to drink while I’m out with her. She is planning to drink but she has opted out many times when we are drinking so I know she will understand. It will just be hard for me to say no. Reasons: I have be driving home a little further than usual and I have a presentation on Thursday.
Hope you’re all having a great week!

@dawnbgethealthy I totally hear you about needing to bring your own skates. Rentals are the worst! Like skating on ball bearings. Have fun! Wish I could guide you, don’t know Dallas at all.
@htimpaired glad you are here! Consistency is a challenge for a lot of us- myself included. We are all on a journey to build better habits. You have great “why’s”, which lead to solid “how’s “.3 -
I have been mostly alcohol free for several months now. It's always hardest around my family because this is my family "culture". I just visited them for 4 days including one big family party with lots of good wine and alcohol events every day (including margaritas at the beach- my old favorite) and I did not drink! Hooray! Especially happy since I did have one drink at the airport when my airplane was delayed indefinitely and I was in a grumpy mood (my first drink in months). I wondered if that one drink would make me just cave for the whole weekend and drink a lot but I was able to not do so. I am proud but mostly happy cause I slept great, had good times with them, and feel healthy.9
-
I’m curious that it bloats you! I wonder if whatever it’s treated with isn’t past or the problem. Water is supposed to de-bloat people.
I am glad you popped back in...that reminds me I wanted to respond to the above when you posted, but alas I got side tracked. Anyhow I find drinking at least 64 ounces a day of water DOES de-bloat me. And gives me a flatter stomach when I wake up. Even if I eat half a large can of jalapeno pringles. (OH BOY, did I just say thst out loud? True story)

Good to see you back in here. You have done very well since...I think it was July, right? When you stuck it out for 12 long days? So many great benefits to drinking "less". Sleep as well for me is a huge one. Nice job!2 -

Since I started Sept. "AF" I noticed my VO2 max number on my garmin improved from 36 to 38. This means my cardiovascular age is getting younger . This happened with doing nothing different training-wise. I had no idea what this meant but then read up on it- I see alcohol does affect athletic performance (read somewhere it decreases cardiovascular performance by 11%). Wow did not know this.5

Yes, completely! 7 days to undo 7 months of hard work. I really do like the blue drinks and 24 hour food at those places, but come out looking like a bloated whale. For sure when you pay for all-inclusive you want to eat and drink!
Actually, the best part of the all-inclusives for me is the fabulous nightly entertainment and all of the activities like Zumba, dance lessons, Spanish lesson etc. I will go on one again some day, but not now when I am only losing on average 1 pound per month.
So, I go on these NHL trips. I have been to quite a few cities already, I go to hockey games and explore the city too. This trip I have tickets for two NHL games, skating every day, and sitting by the pool to read a book which I have seem to have lost time for. (I do love to have a nice tan) I am renting a car, so will also try to get a feel for Texas outside of Dallas also, but mostly the trip will be about decompressing and relaxing.
Once I get back, some more of the arenas in my area should have ice, 3 in my town and 2 in the next town by the end of October. So crazy that I can go to Phoenix or Dallas and skate year round, yet in Canada only sporadically in October, and full time from November to March.
Thanks for letting me share : - )

9 days AF and 9 days not this month.
Feeling pretty good about that but the rest of the month will tip the scales significantly. A family birthday, a long weekend in Atlanta at an art show, and next week I’m hosting a team meeting which means two evening activities plus book club plus a birthday party to round out the month.
Although I likely won’t have many more AF days this month my goal is to not over do it for any of those events.5 -

Everyone is sticking to goals and accountability and stratagies IT IS A WONDERFUL THING!
Took a look at my calender of accountabilty compared to where I was this time last year. Last year I was SUPER excited at the progress I had made since Jan 2018.
Now....this year I am at 78% LESS alcohol consumption as to last year at this time.

So inspired by all of you! Wanted a drink tonight, no real reason, but luckily the feeling passed very quickly. I’ve been much more consistent with logging my food, and the scale is showing it. Yay!
Race weekend coming up. Even with the calorie burn from paddling,I just don’t want to blow my progress.
10 AF out of 19. Not bad! Back before I started this journey, it would have been maybe 1 out of 19!6 -
Hi all! Great job checking in and having more AF days than not!
Have a friend staying with us this weekend so I may drink 1 or 2 of the nights. I would love to say that I’ll only drink 1 night but I don’t know if I can commit to that. My problem before was that 2 nights of drinking easily became 4-5 nights in a row. That’s my main motivation for trying to keep it to one night. And I really need to learn to be social without alcohol.
Anyways, here’s my tally so far:
