I'm in a bit of a conundrum. I was originally planning on running the Shanghai Marathon on Nov. 17, but 1) my training is not going very well and 2) my boss doesn't like the idea very much, since I'll be the lead on the project and if I'm running, well let's just say it ain't gonna be pretty. She's been trying to talk me into switching to the 10km all week, and I'm probably going to.

So the question becomes, what do I do now? Do I find a HM race nearby and call it a season? Or should I find a spring marathon and restart my training plan? Ditch running entirely for a month and learn rock-climbing? :/

If it is just a matter of timing, then finding a spring marathon could be wise, and you could do that AND run a half now instead of the full.

It really just comes down to what YOU want and YOUR goals. So to answer this you need to figure out what you think is important, and then plan for it.

@rheddmobile @Elise4270 Eek! I've eaten my share of bugs but that... no thank you!

@MNLittleFinn Wooohooo! My brain can't even start to comprehend how tough that must've been.

Hmm... I'm not keen on the peer pressure to switch distances. But assuming there's not enough time to dedicate to both for a respectable outcome... I hate to say work is probably the priority. Run when you can, and definitely take up rock climbing! I've seen some info on elite runners, they take seasons off. I can't remember how long a season is, maybe 6-8-12 weeks? It could be a good move, if you've hit a plateu, or are flirting with injury. Or just wanna keep your status at work.

Good luck. I want rock climbing pics. @ROBOTFOOD you do any rock climbing out thataway?

Occasionally. Red Rock Canyon is about 30min away which has world class climbs. But it’s usually crowded / spots taken. 20yrs should, you’d be alone. These days for me, I mostly powerlift and snowboard.

@autumnblade75 I love the squid costume! My gosh it must have been hot in there.

It seems to me you seeded yourself just about perfectly - since your first mile was under 10 minutes, if you were further back you would have had to go around others. And everyone is allowed to be a little optimistic when seeding. It’s the walkers who put themselves in front who drive everybody crazy.

I agree. Sounds like you did well! I could not imagine running a 5k in that get up!

@MNLittleFinn - I just can't even comprehend the miles and the hours. Amazing endurance. Congratulations and I hope you are recovering well - and sleeping for days!

@rheddmobile good grief on that Junebug. I swallowed some kind of little bug today while running and it stuck in the back of my throat and I nearly gagged thinking about that junebug.

@noblsheep sorry you have to pick between your marathon and work. I'm not sure what you should do but I'd be tempted to at least find a half to run soon and then evaluate what you want to do. Rock climbing sounds awesome and I'm planning on taking on more of that after my HMs are over in October. I'm looking forward to kind of an "off" cycle and I'm not sure I could start another major training cycle right away.

@ContraryMaryMary awesome half marathon, congratulations! Well done on your AG 2nd place and great overall finish.

@username301 well done on personal bests for 5k and 6k - progress!

@Avidkeo wonderful that you are loving your new house. Sounds lovely.

@elise4270 sorry you have to have another surgery and are feeling down. I can't blame you, dealing with pain all the time. Not sure what to recommend to help, but thinking about you! Can you do sauna or soak in a hot tub. Is a massage out of the question? Oh and good luck with your application to PA school! You can't fail the GREs, it's just practice if you don't get the scores you want.

Nice job @dcolander! You should sign up for a 5k - great motivation and looks like you are ready!

Oh my gosh @autumnblade75, LOVE that you ran in a squid costume. And you did so well! I think I'm losing a toenail too - but it's half the nail the long way - the other half is good, so I'm not sure how this is going to go down.

@katharmonic thanks. English usage, reading and such I will score below 150. I did study but gave up when I couldn’t make any improvements. I sat with dh to help me, he couldn’t explain why, just knew the right answers because it made sense. Math I might do okay if I refresh some formulas. Writing? Nah... I’ll score a 2 or 3. Language is not my thing apparently. I took the TEAS for nursing school and made a 100% on the math. It was super easy math though. Won’t be doing that on the gre. I’ve taken it, but it’s been 100,000 years ago.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner that first buffalo pic, it looks like you took a bite outta one! Really, I think it’s a flower, but could be a nibble. Great pics btw. I can never get their faces, only butts.

@autumnblade75 I know there’s a squidward joke in there somewhere. Maybe @garygse has one? (Since we made fun of him, with love, about looking like the elf on the shelf that one race). Way to rock it! “Meow”.

@Elise4270 Not a flower. That bison really had an open wound there, but I'm not sure where it came from.

They were galloping around like maniacs and bonking heads the other day when we were there, seems to be the season for disputes. I know cows have a 9 month gestation and give birth in the spring, are buffalo the same way?
