Otherwise we just wouldn't be compatible.
let's see....
car wash usually once a week - interior & exterior
laundry, at least one load of laundry a night (usually 2) - sort/wash/dry/place
bed linens washed once a week
home rule - nobody wakes up to dishes in the sink (clean or not)
floors / hardwood / cleaned twice a week
no boxes or deliveries sitting in the foyer
bed is made each and every morning - no exceptions
dusting wood furniture - hopefully once a week ( I hate doing this )
Dad's USMC dialed-in & squared away lifestyle stuck.
You're a woman arent ya? 😂

I'm fairly convinced that choice at all is just an illusion...
That's the Calvinist worldview. That and the concept of total depravity.
I'll go as far as to say that I won't date any woman who believes in the concept of free will over determinism. Life's too short to humour those dum dums.1 -

You know... I've become a proponent of destiny in recent years...
Maybe one day, a mix of life experiences and influences will change my mind but then that would just be destiny all over again...

I was thinking in the more religious aspect; that a person believes they have no actual free will or any choice (no matter how small). That a higher power will lead them to all the appropriate answers without any intervention on their own part. I think it's fine to have faith in something outside of yourself (I won't argue it, anyway), but to believe you are only the puppet of an unseen hand is so... dystopian to me. I may have been born in the 80s, but I definitely don't align with dystopian ideals or theory, sorry.
I suppose you don't need to be religious to think that free will is an illusion; again, I mention Illusionism, a philosophy that actually discusses and dissects this concept, but Determinism is a whole field in and of itself. You might look into it if you haven't already. You'd make a good philosopher.2 -

I don't think there's any such thing as being a master of your own destiny, "mythical sky people" (nice) or no. Every choice you've ever made was pre determined 14.5 billion years ago within a microsecond of the creation of the universe when the distribution of atoms and energy occurred. Create a million universes with the exact same starting conditions and you'll live the exact same life a million times. We're no more capable of altering or destiny as is a lifeless rock floating in outter space. We just have delusions of grandeur that make us believe the universe has different rules for us just because we're conscious of it.0 -

Interesting perspective, but I'll politely disagree. I don't believe anything was predetermined before my birth for me either by the universe, an unseen higher power or the realm of man. It's cool if you do, though. Doesn't hurt me at all.
P.S. "Mythical sky people" was not intended as an insult. I was struggling to come up with a term to describe the concept of gods and higher powers that could be all encompassing. I still failed though as there are people/religions that don't believe in a god per say, but more that the universe takes care of all.1 -

Well if it wasn't meant as a belittlement then I apologize for taking it that way. 😊 From what I remember from my universities comparative religion course there are few modern religions who believe their deities to be a) skydwelling, or b) people. And while the term mythical is technically correct, it also opens a can of worms as it can be used as a sort of synonym for fictional. I hope you didn't think I actually believed that people who believe in free will are dumdums. That was a tongue in cheek statement. Free will, like God, is a concept fundamentally impossible to prove or disprove.1 -

Not to beat a dead horse here but....
The irony is that the catholic boy in me has issues with believing choice is an illusion... The one thing that God gave us above all else is free will... But this just doesn't sit well with everything else for me...
I mean it's possible that while yes tomorrow's decisions have already been made, free will still plays a part... I'm just destined to make certain decisions...
It's like my free will has already been factored in ahead of time 🤷🏽♂️...1 -

I think people conflate predetermination with God’s omniscience. ‘If God knows what I will choose, then that must mean I don’t have a choice.’ But I don’t agree with the idea that God’s omniscience and our free will are mutually exclusive. It’s hard for us (as humans and not gods) to understand how they can coexist. Just because we don’t understand it, doesnt mean it’s not possible though.1 -

So then.... We are in agreement? 🤷🏽♂️😬
I think so, but I'm not sure it's really about God... Is the future already existing at this very moment and thus preset, or are we like the very beginning of the river carving out a new channel leaving our past behind and the wake of its existence 🤷🏽♂️...
I think we could be either... If the future does not exist at this moment... That doesn't mean it's not predetermined what will be... 🤷🏽♂️
It's like if you have 1... And add a second... You now have two, there's just no way around this... You have no choice on the matter 🤷🏽♂️...
Also if God already knows what decision you will make, yes you may still have free will, but you are destined to make that decision...0 -
@Mr_Healthy_Habits & @CacoEther - given the current topic, you both might find this bit from BBC Reel interesting (or not).

Thanks I will check this out for sure...
But will add before this... That while I believe destiny and free will can coexist... I ultimately don't believe this is the case... Atm I believe free will is really just an illusion...
Just to clarify my position 🤷🏽♂️...0 -

How about shampoo and conditioner bottles. I read those while in the shower ALL THE TIME. Or cereal boxes? (ever notice how the french version is never a literal translation?)
