Less Alcohol - NOVEMBER 2019 - One Day at a Time

My goal is 16-20 AF days for the month.
I didn't get there in October, ended up with 10 or 11AF days. Daily drinking is so very easy to slip back into!
November 15 - AF
November 16 - A bunch of red wine (not my drink of choice) at a girlfriend's who invited me for Lasagna. Although I had one glass or two glasses each night in Dallas, it made me feel lovely. Did not feel lovely, thought that I was going to puke, did not feel well in the morning.
November 17 - AF
November 18 - AF
November 19 - Tuesday, 3 drinks. I like my decision to allow myself drinks on stressful Tuesdays, I haven't always had drinks on Tuesdays since starting this, but mostly.
November 20 - AF - getting towards that 16-20 AF days : - )
November 21 - AF - really really felt like having drinks, had a long stressful workday. I managed to resist.
November 22 - 3 drinks - I made a drink before I even got out of my work clothes today!
November 23 - AF - 7 days left in the month only! That went by fast.
November 24 - AF - planning on hitting the 16th AF day for the month tomorrow. If I could keep up putting 2 AF days in between drinks days I would be good with that plan.
Running tally 15AF days out of 24 days so far.6 -
So far 22AF/24 November days
Kept it cool thru the weekend with hubbies relatives in the vicinity. I feel all the tension go away when I know they are in their car traveling back to their home 5 hours away.
Another win.7 -
Thank you all for sharing your stories. It’s truly an honor to hear them.3

8 days AF... I cannot remember the last time this happened. This week has been good, time to rethink my relationship with A. I snacked a lot this week, maybe filling in the gaps, but I think because I was not adding A to the mix, I didn't gain as much as I thought I would. (up .8). Time to work on my snacking urges!8

I’m 12 days wine free and it’s been great. I have lost 3.2 pounds - and I don’t have a ton to lose and didn’t really change anything else so clearly the extra weight is the wine. I’m having planned wine at two Thanksgiving celebrations this week but then I want to go right back to AF and just do planned drinks at the parties we have coming in Dec. then I’d like to do Dry Jan again. Discovering AF beer, and hot chocolate has changed the game for me hope you all have a happy holiday week.6

November has been a complete wash for me, weight-loss wise. Began at 158, dropped a few by mid month, and am back up to 158 today due to a 5-day streak of alcohol. We lost 1st place in our bowling league on Wednesday, so I drank a few beers and ate a late-night grilled cheese and fries as solace for coming in 2nd. Thursday I took a mental health day off from work and ended up going to a trivia night at a brewery and had a few beers there. Friday drank, Saturday drank, and Sunday had a friendsgiving where we drank.

I am in no way an expert. I think it helps to start with a longer streak to reset - get used to not drinking. It’s also helpful to have real things ready to replace the wine/ beer. There are actually a lot of pretty decent NA craft beers and I have found that bringing a few to a party totally worked. I had a beer in my hand that tasted beerish and I felt social and not like I was missing out. I’ve also tried to continuously be conscious about all the things I love about not drinking when I’m not drinking. (Better sleep, weight loss, more present w kids, better food choices etc.) wine and beer have a lot of calories so I’ve even been having hot chocolate at night sometimes. Changing the mindset from a scarcity (like the negative I can’t have...) to the opposite - noticing all the benefits of not drinking and making sure you have rewards (special drinks NA, or a show to watch etc) when cravings hit help too. I also write down everything - keeps me accountable.

I can’t remember who upthread was asking about decent NA wines. I have never found one, but, this has been showing up in my Facebook feed quite a bit lately.

Not alcohol free but lower alcohol content and lower sulfites so it might be a good alternative for folks practicing mindful moderation as I try to.
I’m not ready to make a 6 bottle purchase commitment but if anyone does try it I would be interested in your review.

I would like to share a sad true story about a dear friend of mine. He was a young man and like so many others thought he didn’t have a worry in world. I worked with him and his fiancée they were so sweet together beautiful couple. They had a 3 yr old daughter. I had invited them one Sunday night to hear me preach and God put on my heart that night about choices. I had no idea who the message was for but I mentioned about accidents and how we may not have the opportunity to accept Christ before our death. I even specifically mentioned how you could be involved with a drunk driver. Again I had no idea that 2 months later my dear precious freind would leave a party to go pick up his little girl with his fiancée and tragically hit a tree 2 miles from their home after picking up their daughter. The daughter was said to have been almost decapitated as she was thrown from vehicle. The mother in passenger seat thrown into windshield losing her life. The father who along with the mother were both emancipated he survived but not before seeing his little girl and fiancée both deceased in a horrible way. Those images have since been burnt in his mind to never be erased. He told me 1 week before he went to prison for vehicular manslaughter that hoe he wished he’d listened to me 2 months early about “choices”. This story saddens me so.....I plead with you all don’t let satan deceive into thinking social drinking is ok. One drink always leads to another. Society wants to show you on tv how drinking is ok and fun. You see people laughing having a good time. But they don’t show you the endless nights of vomiting and the violence it brings out of people. satan came to steak kill and destroy people. Jesus came to save you and love you. I’m not here to push religion or condemn anyone. Jesus came not to condemn but to save us. I simply encourage you to come to Jesus and place your faith in him and what he did for you at the cross. You may say I’ve tried but failed over and over. If you keep your faith in him and him alone and say Lord I can’t do it by myself but by faith in you what you did for me at the cross I will have victory! Don’t give up!!! If you don’t quit he (Jesus) won’t quit! If anyone ever needs a freind and I can help
You in anyway please message me anytime. I love you all and am praying for you all. ✝️😁
But I must ask you to STOP preaching your religious sermons. Nothing kills a thread quicker than talking about politics, religion or money.
I have been on this particular thread for 23 months and we have never had anyone try to push those subjects. There are other threads I am sure you can find to sell your thoughts to or you can simply create your own.
Be well.7 -

@WinoGelato I get the same coming thru on my FB. Also those tiny test tube samples of 12 wines you can by. YOWZER those are expensive sips to sample. Good thing I do not like wine.🙄
Nice to hear from you. 😁0 -
I've not been AF for many weeks, backsliding, depression. Need to get back in the game TODAY. I was feeling so good being AF, miss it and want it back!6

I really can't abide with the poor spelling and abysmal grammar : - O
j/k on the former (not really), but I might be Buddhist, Muslim, Pagan, Atheist/Agnostic, Hindu, First Nations, etc...this is a global thread. I am definitely offended at anyone trying to push their religion on me!!2 -
@ellie117 I think that you did the whole month of October AF right?
You know that you can do it. So you had a few days (5?) when you didn't. You have done so much better than me, you have proven that you DO have self control.
I totally know what you mean though about eating stuff after drinking. I seriously on my AF days can't get enough calories in to me and have to add fake ones just so that MFP will let me finalize my food diary for the day.
I too am trying to lose weight by drinking less (and I think that we are at the same weight!!)...it is not just the calories from the booze, it is the eating/food choice that accompanies it.
You've got this, just keep checking in : - )4 -
@SanDiegofitmom whacha gonna put in that pie dish??? Enjoy your AF beer.
I just made a pumpkin eggnog cheese cake. 🙄
I too would like to know what you put in that pie!!!
Lol, up here in Canada it could be anything, Tourtiere, Game Pie, Roadkill (just kidding on that one). Seriously though, in Quebec there is Sugar Pie, which is pretty much like Pecan Pie without the Pecans...thick gelatinous sugary stuff.
I truly do love that we are all from different areas and am interested in regional foods.
Pumpkin eggnog cheese cake? Wow!! Aren't you just Martha Stewart! : - )1 -

Oh @dawnbgethealthy I have made a pork tourtiere twice and love them. My hubbie is French Canadian descent and he had told me once of this pie his Grandmother would make when he was a child, so I reserched recipes and made it. DELISH!
Now that was when I was FIRST contemplating cutting back on alcohol with serious intention 3 or 4 years ago. And I know I pre-planned to make the tourtiere on a day that I was not going to drink, because I did not want to screw up the pie after all the work I was going to put into it.
Many a baked good or dinner got ruined when I was in the kitchen and drinking to much. That means a lot of $$$ that went right down the drain that either got burned or was uneatable.
How is it you can put in a 14 hour day at work and still have time to catch up with us? You are amazing!

Oh man it’s an amazing pumpkin ice cream pie with a graham cracker crust, topped with whipped cream, salted dark chocolate almond bark and homemade toffee sauce it’s from the Bon Appétit desserts cookbook. It’s a lot of work but worth it once a year. I also don’t like traditional pumpkin pie so it makes me happy! Plus after 14 days no wine I lost 3.6 pounds and I deserve a little slice of heaven! Thanks to all and happy Turkey day

Ha, well, I start at 4am on Tuesdays. The rest of my week is usually pretty normal.
And now...I have a hankering for Tourtiere. I grew allergic to pastry for some reason when I hit 30, so only eat the filling of stuff. On New Year's day the French Canadians always have game pie, with like 4-8 different types of game - always rabbit snared somewhere, sometimes right in the driveway lol. I haven't had it in quite a while since I live in an area in the BC now where there don't seem to be any French Canadians.
Maybe you will have to make your hubby some Sugar Pie : - )

For all of my American MF Pals... "HAPPY THANKSGIVING"
I hope that however you are spending your day, with family, friends, or with yourself, that you know that I am thankful for all of your support and sharing here with this group.
I am usually the one hosting, but my future Daughter-in-laws parents are hosting this year. So instead of having to get up at the crack-of-dawn, cooking & cleaning all day, I get to relax, which I am also Very Grateful for! I am looking forward to seeing everyone, (and the pecan pie).
I have 11 days in a row AF... not sure yet, but I might have a glass (or 2) of wine, or maybe not.
Enjoy your day!4 -
Happy Thanksgiving
Traveled to my daughters house, my two daughters their husbands and children my wife all working together to prepare the meal all civilized and not a drop to drink
A happy holiday can be AF
5 -
Hope everyone that is celebrating Thanksgiving is having a wonderful day. Mine is AF, two drinks LESS than last Thanksgiving. We have already had our early feast. And been contacting those near and far to let them know how they mean to us.
Whether you are celebrating this holiday or not. I would like each of you to know how much I look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your company and support on this thread. Sharing something as we do that is considered a subject most would never think of discussing, reinforces our commitment to be a better us.
Many many THANKS to all of you.💜3 -
I will not drink, I will not drink, I will not drink... no matter how much I want to right now!!! I don't understand why some people (step daughter), cannot enjoy the holiday without drama!
Thank you, just needed to get this out, hoping it keeps me away from the bottle!6
