@gcreardon Wow! So sorry to hear about your ankle! I feel the same way about eating better when I exercise. I see the "calories burned" on my treadmill after I've walked an hour and think "wow, that would barely cover the calories in a candy bar." I'm less likely to overeat when I see how hard it is to burn it back off again!1

Sometimes working out has the opposite effect for me: I work out so I feel like I can eat way more and sometimes take it too far. I need to find a balance. Or maybe just don't factor in my exercise toward my total calories for the day? But that doesn't seem right either. Does everyone on here adjust their calories intake if they workout that day? I'm kinda new to calories counting.🤔1

I just have a mind where exercise seems to turn off my sweet and fried "teeth." I also put my kindle on the shelf of the elliptical and go to town normally, so the time flies. 8 miles down? One more chapter please!
I never adjusted my calories when I worked out before, because I did not want to feel entitled to more. I knew myself and knew I would justify anything into the ground. But exercising did make me feel better about my small "cheats" or "mistakes" (if my mind was being mean label-wise). "I had 2 string cheese sticks (I'm obsessed) when I allotted none today... thank goodness for that mile earlier." I think it is about finding out what works for you and what you will try to justify.2 -

Jason - my Christian brother, you are one inspiring person. The bible says our body is a temple, mine look more like a log cabin with plenty of rolls ( logs ) to go around. Can you tell me, what are planks ?
escalada - by the way you described what you do it sounds like WW. I am working on the same idea. do what works.
Strongjo89 - I was a caregiver for my dad for the last 8yrs. He was a Pancreatic cancer survivor, had a stroke, several heart attacks, punctured lung from getting rolled over by his ATV at age 81, Renal failure, diabetic, and had pulmonary Fibrosis. Little must I say....he kept me busy. So THANK YOU for being there for people who need it.
Alexis - the first 20 days are the hardest, after that it pretty much falls into place, the first 2wks, don't be too hard on yourself. We've all been there.

I don't really adjust mine, but I also don't have a super strict calorie goal. I set mine at 1800, which is quite high, but I'm usually aiming for 1500 or so. I work out daily at varying intensity so I never really know how much I'm burning. And every calculator I've used (including the counter on my treadmill) seems to disagree with every other other one, so it seems easier to just have a fairly generous calorie goal and know that every workout helps a little. But that may just work for me.1 -
@Ladycopnh1 Thanks! The last 10-15 pounds I've lost have had a much more evident effect on my appearance than the first 30-35! It's kind of funny because we've all been isolated during that part, and now when people I know happen to see me out and about, it's very surprising to them. They didn't really notice that I was losing much before, so to them, it seems like I've lost 45 pounds in the last 9 weeks (instead of the 5 months that it actually took). It's like I went into my cocoon as a caterpillar and came out a butterfly!5

Yep my body is a temple with too many rolls as well! Planks are a type of exercise when you go into push-up position but you hold it at the top. I do several modified versions like resting on my elbows and forearms instead of hands, or knees instead of feet. Or on my side. I basically just count each position together and I’m going for an accumulative 60 minutes in May (47.5 so far!). The longest I’ve done in one go is 45 seconds in elbow-plank. And I’ve been really lax this week, so I’ve only done it twice. 😬1

I'm currently 229 but began my journey on 12/2/19 at 244 with a mystery illness that put me in the hospital. I'm 58 and diagnosed prediabetic, stage 3 kidney disease, high bp, high cholesterol, plaque psoriasis, osteoarthritis, and possibly congestive heart failure. I work fulltime (telecommuting since 3/23) in mental health field. Sitting way too much, tired of watching everything (sodium, carbs, fat, cholesterol, portions) and required to weigh daily. I want to get to 154 and ditch my 3 BP meds. My lowest weight was 220, so my cheating and malaise is showing.2

ladycopnh1 , I just finished my first year of law school. Also just started my summer internship and one of my two summer classes. Figured all that computer time with intense typing may keep my hands busy and out of the chip bag, since everything is remote and the kitchen is so close in a small studio. lol.
So my left ankle has been reconstructed twice (experienced massive weight gains after each), and I may have a reconstruction on my right this year too. I fell down the steps outside the school last fall and it has not healed right (had me screaming on the elliptical when I didn't wear a brace). My doc and I are discussing it at my upcoming appointment. Thus it is really important I get this "diet" part of "diet and exercise" down and learn how to walk finally!1 -

Hello new friends, I hope it's not too late to join. I have a desk job and sit all day long. Over the last few years I have gained probably 35-40lbs. I am twice divorced and starting life over again. 3 kids-18, 16, & 12. My daughters "graduation ceremony" is coming up and I am embarrassed to go, I will go but am having a hard time dealing with being at my highest weight ever, knowing nothing in my closet fits, and having more then one chin. Today I have decided to try the whole macros thing. Maybe this will work for me. I think I calculated it correctly.

That’s unfortunate. I went down as far as 303.8 this week, but I’m back up a bit. Holiday yesterday plus pizza and tasty curry chicken over the weekend. My big weakness is eating extra when I have a tasty meal in front of me. I can pack on 2+ lbs in a single sitting if I’m not careful. Anyone have advice?
The good news is I’m getting more involved in working out, so the planks are on track (57/60 minutes for May’s goal). I’m also back hitting the road walking after my hamstring healed and even mixed in some jogging last night. 3/5 walk/jogs of 3 miles this week already. I’m thinking about increasing my goals or adding something else but I can’t decide. Should I add pull-ups, pushups, jump rope, or something else? (If only the gym was open and I could go swimming!)

@metonymicalinsanity I wouldn't worry too much about going from 303.8 to 306 within a few days. That happens to me often. My guess is that the pizza and curry were likely higher in sodium than the food you normally eat, so you may just be experiencing some temporary water weight. With regard to eating too much, my best advice is to weigh your food and figure out calories before eating rather than being surprised afterwards. I try to measure out what I consider to be an appropriate serving and see how I feel after eating it. If I'm still legitimately hungry, I will eat more, but only after considering the calorie impact. For instance, often when I eat pizza, if I'm still hungry I will eat some fruit or vegetables instead of eating more pizza. I'm not always successful, of course, but I at least want to make the decision consciously.3

A couple of you have fallen off the wagon, I think it ran me over. I have gotten so busy with my house, my parents house and my camp that I haven't been "dieting" the way I should. Tracking as stopped cuz by the time I get home I'm exhausted. The only thing I have kept up on is my exercising. That's the only thing that's saving me. I have GOT to get my head out of .... the ground and pay attention to what I'm eating. I want to get through these 30s to hit my 40pd loss.

Josh, I have finally picked up the habit ( good ) of taking half the portion that I really want first, if I really want some more later I know where to find it. It's not going anywhere. 90% of the time, I never go back. While I'm eating I get distracted with something else. Remember "Will it taste as good as thins going to feel ?"1 -
Thanks for the good advice. @VeggieMeg71 I don’t have a scale so I’m mostly eyeballing portions. Probably would be worth investing in a cheap kitchen scale eh? But yes I could certainly do something between 1 or 1/2 portion like @ladycopnh1 suggested and then wait and see how I feel. My problem is I get to the end of that first plate and I “wait” for about 30 seconds before loading up on plate no. 2. 🤷♂️
But the scale is down to 302.6 this morning so I think you were right about water weight from the foods. And my exercise is still on track (finished the 60 minutes of planking for May! Went for a walk/jog last night and felt good! Am going to start jump roping today! 😳)

I would love to join as well. My highest weight was 244.6. I have lost 16 pounds. To make a long story short. I gained a lot of weight after my 2 back to back miscarriages in 2016. I had 3 D& C surgeries very close together and it wrecked havoc on my body. I wasn't physically healed from that until 2018 (I was 10 pounds away from my goal weight) and I found out I was expecting again. I had my sweet rainbow baby boy on April 4th, 2019. I lost weight while pregnant by cutting out sugar completely.(I was a lot smaller while I was pregnant) After I had our little man I went nuts on the sugar and got up to 244.6. I am now trying to lose the weight and get my body back to my pregnancy weight. I know that sounds funny but I lost so much weight while pregnant by stopping sugar. I got down into the 190s!!2
