Thanks for the recommendations on tights, I think I may try the Athleta. It’s a bunch of money but I only really need one pair of super warm tights.
Race Report, Memphis Runners Track Club Winter off-road series 5k, race #2 in the series. Held at Johnson Park where my husband and I usually run trails (it’s the park with the bridge that keeps disappearing and reappearing under the water). When we arrived the first thing we did was go ask the race director if the bridge was flooded! It’s been about a 50/50 chance so far this winter. Today it was NOT FLOODED! Which meant that the course was run as planned, unlike last year when it was changed to an out and back because of the flooding.
This was our race to win, it was on our home stomping grounds, so it was a little disappointing that I felt bad today and ran a mediocre race. I think I may be starting a lupus flare, just generic feeling terrible and stressed. Anyway even accounting for the longer course our pace was almost a minute off from last year. Just could not seem to go faster. Part of it is that we are in terrible shape compared to this time last year due to almost two months of bad runs due to colds and injury, which we knew going in, but even so, this was not a great run. The good news: my Achilles’ tendon feels great right now, and my husband found a new way of taping his ankle which helped a lot. Also: it did not rain on us! Up until the last minute the forecast was saying 50% chance of rain, and I don’t have a rain jacket with a hood right now, so I was praying. But the weather was 51, if anything a trifle warm to run hard, and didn’t start misting rain until after the race.
We started off by lining up in the 8 - 10 minute corral, which I figured was overly optimistic for today but fair since I ran 9:28 here last year. Unlike the last race in the series, where there were a bunch of new people and I looked around and figured out that I should have probably moved forward, today I looked around and saw nothing but track club and running store employee singlets. On mostly guys who were younger and taller than we are. I figured we were about to get passed a whole bunch and I wasn’t mistaken. Fortunately the trails at WC Johnson are mostly double wide and there were no real bottlenecks. In fact, when these trails are dry, they are some of the easiest running around - nice flat dirt trails, with the worst hazards being a few dips and tree roots. Today, however, they came extra sloshy with a side of mud!
This course starts out on an access road, then heads onto gravel, before turning into the woods. It’s usually a good idea to run the roads hard in order to make up time that will be lost going carefully in the woods. Looking back at my gps data we started really fast, doing the first third of a mile at about a 7:30 pace. It felt really slow at the time, and my husband was also surprised to see our speed, which just goes to show what running in a pack with faster runners will do to you. We hit the woods and slowed down to a steady speed, being periodically passed by younger and faster people. There were a handful of young people who were very fast but clearly new to trails who kept passing us repeatedly on dry ground, then hitting a patch of mud and freaking out, dancing around trying to keep dry while we chugged straight through and passed them. Then they would repeat the process. I swear we passed one young woman five times!
At the bridge, we were given the option to run up and down a steep muddy slope or use the stairs. We opted to use the stairs going down and the slope going up, which may not have been the best choice, since we were passed by several people who used the stairs up and seemed less winded as a result. Usually, in practice, we use the stairs because it gives us a chance to stop, blow our noses, and so on, but it seemed like the slope would be less exhausting in race conditions. Pretty sure that was a miscalculation.
Heading into the final mile, I noticed we were starting to get passed by people nearer our own age and fitness level and tried to pick it up, but my body was having none of it. I did run hard for the finish, alongside two other ladies who were equally determined. I beat one and the other beat me.
My time was 33:59. The course, which is not supposed to be exact distance, was quite a bit long, my gps says 3:22ish and 10:30 minute miles - which is pretty good for us in practice since we usually run these trails about 12, but not good at all for a race day. Ended up seventh in AG, sighed heavily, then toted up the points from the series and figured out, hey, I’m still in this thing. I was 4th in the first race. Due to two of the people in front of me not showing up, I’m now 5th overall in the series, and two of the ladies in my AG are shoo-ins for Master and Grandmaster respectively, which would make them ineligible for AG awards. Which go three deep. So I could still potentially win a series award in my AG if I do well in the next two races. Considering how badly out of shape we are and that the next two races are the Stanky Creek 8k - the most technical race in the series, which nearly flattened us last year - and the Shelby Farms 10k which was right at the limit of our endurance last year when we were much better off - we will probably not do all that well. But! It ain’t over til it’s over. My husband who runs with me usually ends up right in the middle of the men’s AG and was more in the bottom third, which shows how off our game we were. He says he had more in terms of stamina, but would not have wanted to run faster on his ankle with it bothering him. The next fastest woman in my AG was almost a full minute faster, so I don’t feel bad about my effort - I went all in, and there was no way I could have shaved that much time off - just wasn’t a good run day for me! We had a great time and nobody faceplanted in the mud, which is the most important part of any trail race.Optimistic pre-race car selfie:
Look at my face! I look as terrible as I felt!
Nicely muddy shoes are the sign of a proper trail runner!11 -
@rheddmobile good job hanging in there even when you weren't feeling great. I love the shoe picture! As for the standings, anything can happen, but remember that all of your competitors also have to run those same challenging courses!4

14k last night. Fine until 11k but then I came out of my bubble and the last 3k was pretty hard. I am suffering with another cold, coughing up some stuff and have taken headache tablets this morning which is unusual for me.

Biked to the track and ran 400x8 with 400 recovery jog in-between. I guess I've been using "cold" as an excuse to not do much cycling lately, but with more clothing (and a warmer jacket to put on for the ride home), it was actually fine. I've been daydreaming about road bikes lately, but just don't put in nearly enough miles to justify it at the moment. There is really nothing wrong with my trekking bike! Anyone else here do both running and cycling?

@rheddmobile, sorry you weren’t feeling well, but you did a great job! I’d like to get into more trail races.
I got in my six miles yesterday, but the girl I mentor was sick, so we cancelled our hike. I ended up doing a bit of ab work and then focused on laundry and starting to pack for my upcoming vacation. We are going to Egypt, so I am trying to carefully check the weather and plan so I don’t overpack. I also checked out the fitness centers for our hotels so I can hopefully get in some short but decent workouts while gone.5 -
@rheddmobile Sounds like you went all out for the conditions and how you felt. Good for you. Sorry it wasn't as good as you had hoped. It's great that DH's ankle and your Achilles felt better. Fingers crossed for a series award.1

A repeat of yesterday: cloudy, low 30s F, wind from the southwest with light snow. Legs felt good, so I picked up the pace a little.
@LoveyChar Good run!!!!
@rheddmobile You did your best; that's what matters. All I get in January is windburn.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles

I don't have a performance bike but I do have my daughter's regular road bike that never gets used anymore and I love the idea of riding it to the track. I will so be doing this...it's funny you mentioned bike, though. This weekend we cleaned out the garage and I cleaned up my stationery bike. I used to ride it before work every morning while watching TV. I think running/cycling is great because if you're going to drive to the track anyway, at least this way you're maximizing workout efforts by incorporating or replacing the car by biking.2 -

I reached my monthly goal yesterday and earned my 100-mile badge for RTY. The rest of the month is just icing on the cake!
@LoveyChar – Congratulations on your 20 mile long run! I think that I can’t run a marathon or a 50K while I’m doing my long run but turns out I could and you will too! 4 ½ hours by yourself is a lot of time for those self-doubts to creep in. I commend you for hanging in there!
@Camarandy648 – Great job on your long run too! I’ve tried the Hoka’s a couple of times because I thought the extra cushioning would be good. Both times were failures. Nothing immediately noticeable but after a few wears I would get niggles and aches in my ankles and knees that I never had before. I think it’s because I tend to overpronate and with the thicker sole that means I overpronate more – just a guess on my part though. What size do you wear? I can ship you the last pair that I bought in December and you can try them!
@rheddmobile – sorry you were disappointed in your performance but glad your Achilles’ tendon and your husband’s ankle did well!
@polskagirl01 – I do some cycling also. Last year I invested in a hybrid bike that does pretty good on the road but I can also ride it on loose-gravel trails like the rails-to-trails paths. Certainly not made for mountain biking. It was a big chunk of change investment for me but I just took a deep breath and convinced myself that it would last me for several years. The cost also guilts me into getting out and riding it more often that I might normally have ridden.
@marisap2010 – Glad you have a vacation coming up. I seem to remember you being overwhelmed at work lately. Can’t wait to hear about Egypt!
Thanks everyone for the comments and likes on my Hot Chocolate 10k! It was a fun day!

Icing on the cake is awesome, congratulations! And thank you so much for the confidence booster! I'm glad to know you have been where I am now...2 -
I am blessed to love where I usually run. I live amidst a house at the top of the hill so I just run out and hop on the sidewalk which runs the whole length of the road. Lots of people out and about, drivers, runners, walkers, bikers, even a roller blader that is quite often out, and they're a friendly bunch and I feel safe. One mile down the road is the middle school track, which I use frequently. At the end of the road is a gas station if I need to use the restroom. Pictures of the big hill don't do the hill justice, especially since it extends beyond scope... And yes, in the middle of the track are boys in football camp as football is a year round event/preparation here; I snapped this yesterday. It's church on Sunday and football camp afterwards and I usually run around these boys, coaches, and their parents and everyone is just kind of doing their thing.7

@Teresa502 That would be amazing! I am a 7!0
-
@LoveyChar I am so proud of you!
And yep, that sure does look like Texas! I have a friend in McKinney and I supremely enjoyed Galveston last summer. I hope we'll be back again this year.
But again - I can't stress enough just how thrilled I am for you that YOU DID IT. YOU ARE MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE - YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU CAN!
@rheddmobile Even if your performance wasn't what you consider your best, you still went out there and nailed it. And look how well you did! You committed and followed through and that is amazing.
@TheMrWobbly I am so sorry to hear about your back - have you been to the doctor?
I haven't even looked at my training plan for this weekend's long run. I believe it is 18 miles AND it is a weekend where my kids come home Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday. Which means - you guessed it! - I'm going to HAVE to get up early to fit it all in or just not do the long run. Early rising, it is.
Also my son has joined running club and I am absolutely thrilled with this. What are good running shoes for kids? He is 11 and growing. I've never considered actual running shoes for kids, oddly enough.7 -
Wow, so motivating to see everyone meeting their goals for the weekend!
We had wonderful weather here (relatively speaking), so I was able to get in two outdoor runs.
Wanted to run longer this morning, so I dragged myself out of bed at 5 AM. It wasn't that bad, although it was kind of creepy having the streets almost totally to myself.

You are doing great. Don’t be afraid to take extra rest days during c25k. Right around week 3 is where I started to have hip and knee pain. What helped me was slowing down on the run segments, 2-3 rest days instead of 1, and replacing my old worn out shoes. If you haven’t been professionally fitted for running shoes at a running store, I highly recommend it.
[/quote]
Thanks! I did get fitted at Portland Running Company and have Hoka for stability. They’ve been the best shoes I’ve had do far. I think the stretches I read online for feet have been helping. I’ll take your advice on slowing down today.

@Camaramandy648 Thank you! And about the shoes for kids, my daughter runs in Brooks and has since she was 13. But...but but I think it's more of a "statement" she's making since she swears she needs Brooks but refuses to try anything else. Maybe she's sticking with what worked the first time...I don't know.
@janejellyroll Fantastic job on getting out so early, a nice creepy morning run haha!2 -

92.79/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
Once again I am behind on this thread. I did get my run in yesterday. I ran 10.4 miles and for the most part it was a great run. The weather was perfect. It was about 50°F when I started with a light breeze, but not windy and a beautiful sunny day. I ran a slightly different route than my usual long run which was nice. I started out on a loop that I had quit taking a while back because of some dogs at the end. But I decided that there was a place I could turn off before I got to the dogs and I would just do that. Then as I was coming toward the turnoff I saw another runner coming that way and she turned toward where the dogs had been. So I figured I would just follow her and if the dogs came out then I would turn around. But no dogs! Maybe they moved. I hope so. I would like to be able to take this loop sometimes just to vary my long run some.
This was my second run in my new shoes and it was so much better than my long run last week. My feet hurt so much after that run, but I didn't have any issues this time. It really is amazing what a difference new shoes can make. So there I was enjoying my run when at just shy of 8 miles my sister called. I'm pretty close with all of my sisters, but I knew that she wouldn't just call me on a Sunday morning to chat so I stopped to take the call. My mom was having some pains after her surgery a couple of weeks ago and she's not been eating and so they decided to take her to the ER at the same hospital she had her surgery at. We live in a rural town so the hospital is an hour away. So we are trying to figure out who can be there the fastest to take Mom over there. My youngest sister said that she could do it and since it didn't seem to be a crisis type emergency I finished my run (I was already heading back to the house anyway so I was close to the end of it.) So I got home and took a quick shower and grabbed some lunch and headed over to the ER. It turns out that everything is ok. She was just having some discomfort possibly from the stent or just the bile duct healing from the surgery. But it wasn't pancreatitis and she didn't have any infection and all her numbers looked good so they sent her home. But needless to say I never got my run posted yesterday and I am just now getting ready to catch up on the thread.
Today is a normal rest day for me so no run this morning. I am just a little over 7 miles short of my goal for January which shouldn't be a problem. Tomorrow morning should be really nice before it gets cold again on Wednesday and Thursday so I feel confident that I will reach my goal this month, and @Tramboman and I are on track with Team Pavement Pounders for our Run the Year goal of 2020 miles so I am feeling good about that goal as well.

@rheddmobile Great race report as usual. Always enjoy them. Way to gut it out, for both of you and well done. It’s inspiring.
As for the tights, I love my athleta ones. I have only two but it is enough for here. Multiple wears and washes and they look as new. And warm enough I think. Plus is also they are stylish and have pockets!
No run today. Off day. And I did something.
I signed up for 3 races (because discounts). I have a 10k Feb 8 which is a reverse of the course I just did last month so less time on that killer hill, HM March 29th, 5K May 3rd and another 10K in October (I did this one last year and placed first surprisingly though there were only 4 in my AG, lol Just want to see if I can do beat my time or not...).
So now I have only about 8 weeks to train for the half. Yikes.
That will take care of all but the 10miler on my goal list. Still want to do one in Toronto or Myrtle Beach...bucket list.
Happy Monday and congrats and hugs where needed!9 -
@marisap2010 - yay for vacation and Egypt should be amazing!
@Teresa502 - congratulations on hitting your goal!
@enaliba - that is just so awesome!
@rheddmobile - great race report and race even if it wasn't as fast as you had wanted it to be. All things considered you were awesome and didn't give up!
@kgirlhart - I am so glad your mom is ok. She is very lucky to have you all there to help her!
@Camaramandy648 - love your quote - YOU ARE MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE - YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU CAN! I saved it off into my motivational quotes! 😊
Knew I wasn't going to be able run today so swapped my rest day from Sunday to today. Besides it was cool and drizzly yesterday - perfect running weather. It is going to heat up here this week into the 80's. I am hoping it will cool down at least some by Sunday for the HM but I am not counting on it. Will get in a couple of short easy runs this week and should easily make my goal for the month.

Well done @LoveyChar in getting your 20-mile run done. You did great!! The actual marathon WILL be more fun and motivating. And, you will have tapered and rested and be much fresher than you are now in your training cycle. But you pushed through and did it, and that's a huge accomplishment. You can totally do this marathon.
@rheddmobile congrats on your race. I always love your reporting of the race conditions, competitors, and how you felt. You did a great job, especially for what you report as not being in great shape and feeling bad that day. Love that you "went all in" anyway. Impressive! Wishing you great races for the rest of your series! As was said above - everybody else has to do the tough course too - you totally have a shot!
@marisap2010 have a great trip to Egypt. That sounds so interesting, can't wait to hear about it.
@kgirlhart - so scary to get those phone calls. Glad your mom is doing ok.
@shanaber - 80's wow. I can see where cool drizzly rain would be nice for running there, but I have had my fill of cold/freezing rain here! I'll swap you for a while! Hope the weather isn't too hot for your HM this weekend.

It's a cold and rainy/snowy day here and I had a weird schedule today with a doctor's appointment in the middle of the day, so I ended up going to the gym after that to try to avoid going back and forth too many times. It was kind of nice to be there at a quiet time of day. For my spartan training class we were assigned "homework" of doing intervals of 5 min running, 5 minutes stair climbing, and 5 minutes on the Jacob's Ladder - 2 sets of this. I wanted to get a little more running in than it called for because I am not going to run group workout tonight, so I did 15 minutes, 5 mins and 25 minutes for the run intervals. I should have cranked up the intensity a bit more because my pace was not as hard as I would do in a speedwork workout normally. But the Jacob's Ladder really kicks my butt, and the stairmaster is my long-time nemesis, so those I did 5 min and 6 minutes for their two intervals (increased to 6 only because I got caught by my trainer and he talked to me for too long!).
I'm supposed to repeat this workout once more this week, but I find it a little annoying to be changing machines like that. We'll see. I really do need to be doing the stairmaster especially because my next spartan might be a stadium race where there will be literally miles up and down stadium stairs. Terrifying.7 -
Did my first "speed work out" today on this crazy plan.
8 mile Warm up.
Ten 100m sprints at 90% speed
Cooldown
I was really dreading it but I set up the work out on my watch and went for it. First thing, when you are at a full-on sprint... 100m is way shorter than I was expecting. Like I barely felt like I got to full speed when it was time to stop. Had I had to guesstimate it based on feel without the watch I would have been WAY off.
Second the work out was not so bad. Each 100m sprint took like no time at all and after an easy 8 miles, I was warm and loose.
Third I made the mistake of telling my coach I felt like the workout was easy. I am sure I will regret that.
Also, I do not know what 90% speed is, so I just took off as fast as I could.10 -
@kgirlhart I'm so glad your mom is okay. I know that is scary. Glad you and your sisters are close and work together to take care of her.PastorVincent wrote: »Third I made the mistake of telling my coach I felt like the workout was easy. I am sure I will regret that.
@LoveyChar That does look like a great place to run....and like a really killer hill.

@LoveyChar Way to go on the run! Race time will be better!
@PastorVincent yeah you portably will, lol. Nice work out!
@kgirlhart Good to hear about your mom. It can be scary.2
