@noblsheep Glad you and your family are well and not affected. Tough on not being able to run and the boredom. Totally get that.
@eleanorhawkins great run! And yes I have the same issue with no leash dogs and long leashes etc. And I have a dog! Who we walk with a leash. Because you know it's the law. I would love to let him just run loose. There are places for that though.
@Camaramandy648 eek, is your hand ok? Don't worry and stress about not running. You are motivated so you will get them in!
Almost 7 miles today. Plan called for 6, but hey - the last was a cool down I would say. It was more of a tempo run, with the first couple and last ones being easier paces.
Oh! And I got new shoes! Wanted to try the Hoka's and I did, but my usual size in runners is 7.5 and these were big, and they didn't have 7. So, I also tried the new New Balance 1080 Form or whatever which are similar in cushioning to the Hoka. I liked how they felt, and they have a more sock like upper that kind of forms to your foot if that makes sense. Anyway, got those. I can always return and get my usual Brooks Glycerin if they don't work out.
They felt pretty good on today's run, but I'll know better on Sat after my long run.

I fell off the running wagon this past week.
but i got back on monday. had off(birthday) and did 6 hard, uncleared miles. well 4 of them were uncleared. saw coyotes. it was kinda nice to run thru the city surrounded by neighborhoods and industry and nature. it was tough. but i'd been lazy so i felt like i needed to work hard.yesterday, went to the running store to pick up fuel. found out they were dog friendly. speed demon made a quick venture inside. met mercedes the great dane. and left before leaving any panic poo or farts behind. i had asked the local group if a certain trail was clear. they all responded that they had run it and it was clear. in truth, it wasn't. the overlapping parkway was clear. so i went out for 2.5 miles before figuring it out on the snowy trail. stopped the garmin and walked back to the split. did another 8.6 or so on the clear path. speed demon was very nervous. it passes an industrial area and there is a lot of traffic with big trucks like semis and garbage. at a certain point it got back to nature and we settled in. my legs were tired from the Monday's run and the first couple of miles. but we got it done. Speed demon did very well all considered.and after my date last night, checking my social media...found out i won the "why we run" giveaway from the local running store. shoes, clothes, training, garmin, race entries. i'm shocked. other people had gotten sober, survived cancer. i was notified being tagged on fb and instagram but haven't gotten the information about details yet. so waiting. i'm not good at waiting.

I guess make the most of the extra free time with family and stave off boredom by catching up on something else you enjoy and rarely have time for.
I had a 9.15am meeting this morning, something I usually manage to avoid. My husband woke me up at 6. I think he had other intentions, but I went "thanks darling, this is great, I'll have time to get my run in, shower and have breakfast before my meeting!" and hit the road! His face was a picture :-D
Out the door before 7. It's been a while since I've done more than the first few minutes of a run in the dark. I started out too fast for what was supposed to be an easy run, but after the first kilometre I decided that as I was running about 1min/km faster than my minimum target HM pace (!!!) and didn't feel like I was dying I would make it a speedwork day even though my plan didn't call for one this week. I have to move my long run forward next week, so not doing speedwork close to that is convenient.
So it was quiet, I was running my run intervals pretty hard for me, could hear myself breathing over my music and storyline. I was glad of my little walk intervals for recovery. Galloway method speedwork is basically intense fartleks. When I reached my turnaround point I was surprised at how little time had passed compared to my usual times on that route, that's how quickly I was running.
As the river park flooded last week and is still covered in mud and debris I took a loop round round the back of the mall. At 7.45am it was pretty dark and there was NOBODY out there. By the way, I play the Zombie Run! app. As I came up the ramp to the bridge to cross the river, there was a really loud growling in my left ear. I was getting attacked by a zombie in the app, but I swear my brain decided I was getting attacked by a large dog irl. I have never jumped so high or felt my heart race so hard. Now I know what people mean when they say they jumped out of their skin.
Anyway, when I finished my run I hit stop on my watch, expecting (for those of you who don't follow all my ramblings on Strava, I have nicknamed it Garmeen short for Garmin the drama queen, cause it often claims my HR is high and demands I spend a week recovering even from easy runs) it to say something along the lines of "call an ambulance then get in bed for a month", only to read 'Recovery 3 hours'. Wth? 3 hours? I almost died of fright back there, I must have been in at least zone 16! Looked at the workout, it says I was in zone 1 for 30 minutes, zone 2 for 11 and zone 3 for 1. I can only assume it thought we were still in bed and hadn't had its coffee! That also led it to claim I'd only burned 183 calories on a 4 mile run at 5k race pace. Umm yeah, no way José I'm eating the extra nachos today no matter what it says!
Funniest of all, just after my zombie scare I came across a guy with two small dogs off their leashes. The chihuahua decided it wanted to attack me and chased me for a moment trying to bite my ankles. I was so wound I just stopped and yelled at it "WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?", made it squeal and run away. The owner was in hysterics. He's lucky I didn't kick the bloody thing and send it flying! Don't get me wrong, I like dogs but not loose dogs that chase runners, no matter how small they may be. Or ones on extendible leads that try to trip runners up, come to that.
Maybe two weeks ago I was out running and this big dog charges towards me full speed while his owners were about 100 feet away watching. I started climbing a small tree I was so scared and I heard the wife owner laughing while I'm screaming out in fear and struggling to get up this tree. How would I know your moose of a dog is friendly and secondly, I don't care if it is friendly, I don't want to get jumped on and licked. The husband owner called the dog and leashed him at this point and I was fuming. I screamed at him, loud, to keep his dog on a leash. I said "Next time I see that dog off of a leash I'll call the police!" I was furious, looked him hard in the face and he just gave me a thumbs up sign. We crossed paths again in opposite directions about twenty minutes later and he apologized and I could tell he was sincere and felt bad and then of course I apologized for losing my temper so hard but geez, keep your dog on a leash! Here, it's the law that a dog must be on a leash.
Secondly, now I'm off on a rant...I was running at night two weeks ago in light clothing and we have cross walk right of way where sidewalks end (bikers, walkers, runners, all pedestrians even if you're doing cartwheels have right of way); there is no stop sign. Anyway, I was visible, light clothing and everyone else in the world saw me on that street on that night except for one car who turned in left as I was running across the crosswalk. I started well before the car was even there. I have never been madder in my life while running. He/she missed me by a few feet and I was basically, almost sandwiched on the street by two cars (other car was stopped at stop sign like they're supposed to be). I wanted to throw a rock at the back of that car. Seriously! I just screamed, things I would not repeat. Pay attention; disengage your head from your *kitten* and look where you are going. If not me, you could have killed anyone. It would have been no different than plowing into another car but we're not cars, we're people and there's no metal to protect us.7 -
@rheddmobile It is! I was running with the Schweddy Belles for a long time and still friends with the majority of them. I also volunteer for Barry's waterstops during their marathon training runs.2

I had a small terrier come at me while I was running yesterday. I started shouting at it while the owners half heartedly called it (they never left the playground). It kept charging towards me, barking, and having had terriers before, I know they will bite if they get too excited. When it started chasing me after I’d passed it I turned and yelled at it (loud enough for the owners to hear), “do you want to get kicked? Because I will if you don’t go away).
It’s simply an unnecessary hassle we runners can’t do without.7 -
@LoveyChar The course we were practicing yesterday takes you across Bartlett road twice before entering the woods. On race day the road is blocked off, but yesterday it wasn’t. However we got lucky and the light changed as we approached, plus there is a fancy crosswalk button which counts down with a beeper and a light up person (Bartlett seems to use these but Memphis doesn’t so they seem fancy to me).
Anyway a guy tried to turn left right into us while we had our crosswalk light, and then noticed there’s a big old Bartlett police car stopped at the light right next to us! So dude stops crossways through the intersection with a flabbergasted look on his face and politely waits for us. It was very satisfying to see him swinging in the breeze like that after starting to run us over!
I feel so bad for you trying to climb a tree, you must have been so scared! Usually dogs don’t frighten me much but my husband and I once had to run from a pair of escaped semi-feral pit bulls which were fighting dogs belonging to a drug dealer. We ran to the nearest door and a lady let us in and we called 911 and waited to them to come and give us an escort out of there! And she gave us a Church tract. So that’s my scariest dog story.
There aren’t leash laws where I grew up in the country, and I don’t know whether Bartlett has them or not. But I have never been gladder in my life to be jumped on by a large muddy dog than I was yesterday. He was very happy and very muddy and he jumped right up and put his paws on my shirt. But at least he showed us where the path was!3 -

On your map you started out okay, but you took a right on the purple trail when you should have stayed on the white trail, and then towards the end you took a wrong turn on the red connector trail. You could go out there and for the most part just practice the white trail one last time. That is about 80% of the race. Just follow the white markings on the trees.
Like I said, come race day you will have the course flagged. Lane will say what side of you to keep the flags on, I think they usually have them on the left side. It is a very windy course and it is easy to get lost. But they should have course monitors and 8K race arrows at each trail shift to make sure you don't make wrong turns...unless you are Chris Rayder...some how that dude seems to get lost even with a bike escort lol.
Well if you’re Chris you can’t just follow the rest of the runners and go where they go!
So is it SchweddyGirl because of the Breakaway Runners?
To be fair, I once was a second from taking a wrong turn on a 5K once. It was at night, though, and I was the lead male (ended up winning male). This was the 2nd half and the actual lead runner was so far ahead that I couldn't see her or the ATV leading the way. I went straight instead of turning left and noticed I was about to pass through a row of cones before quickly changing course to go the correct direction.3 -

I wish ignorant arses weren't so abundant. It's sad that the only thing stopping him from proceeding was the police car. I don't even think those people care until they get caught and that's it, but it's never about who they could have hurt or killed. They're not remorseful; they just wish they wouldn't have been caught. No decency whatsoever, disgusting. Most of the people here, most, are respectful and will wait.
I hate Pitbull/any dog fighters and they can all burn in... as far as I'm concerned. Harsh, but I mean it. I'm glad the dogs didn't hurt you, though. I hope law enforcement/animal control took over that situation and helped those dogs.1 -
@mbaker566 – Happy Belated Birthday! Glad Speed Demon behaved herself in the running store. Lol. Were you afraid the coyotes might attack her or you?0

No not at all. they typically give humans a wide berth. i don't run with small dogs. i've pet wild ones in the past when i was young and stupid-they seemed to like it too. i run with a waist leash so i was ready with free hands if need be. speed demon also is a good fighter.
but again typically, coyotes give people lots of space and if we do the same, there isn't an issue. the one dog walker mentioned that they were in mating season and were a little more aggressive than usual but just like people-keep an eye out on our surroundings and will likely be fine3 -
Happy belated birthday @mbaker566
You showed great restraint @eleanorhawkins as I have all but given up being nice when they are off the lead. Big dogs tend not to be a problembut the little yappers - oh my word! They just get a terse "MOVE!" or I will run straight through them. I'm pretty sure part of my current pain was jumping a terrier that ran straight at my feet. As for drivers you are grateful you are not on a bike as you are genuine target practice to see if they can clip you with their mirrors!
I have done 7 miles today in two portions though I am desparately short of longs runs so far.

Morning all!
Work was so busy last night and the weather is hot and humid. I think the humidity has been close to 100%. Everything feels damp and sticky guh. Just driving home at 11pm I felt that sheen.
This morning I did a gentle 3.4k to bring me to 143k even. I'm tempted to do 7k tomorrow just to hit 150k for the month! May have to rethink Februarys goal already haha! See how I go tomorrow.

@rheddmobile Memphis and all suburbs have leash laws. I dont see many unleashed dogs around my neighborhood, but I see them all the time in leashed areas of Shelby Farms. I will sometimes take my pup off the leash on the dog park side of the tour de wolf, but is only if there aren't others on the trail. I will sometimes do the same down by the Wolf River trails, but only because he is a great trail dog and never treks off the trail. As soon as we see cyclists or other pedestrians I leash him, and I always pick up after him. Even on the trails.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner This guy Chris is a phenomenal runner. Around here in Memphis he is known as the one to beat. It is just funny, because he has gotten lost on escorted courses with both a bike escort and police escort. And even on courses that were simply a big square.
Anyway, 2 mile run for me today around the neighborhood with my pup. I will post stats later since I am writing this on my mobile.3 -
Happy belated birthday @mbaker566! I have seen a few coyotes out on walks with my dog Stella. She's crazy enough to engage and would fight but fortunately, they do tend to avoid getting close to people.
I haven't had too much trouble with loose dogs while running, but I do all the time while walking Stella. She is NOT good with being approached by other dogs and it is a constant battle with yelling "leash your dog" and "she's not friendly!" to people who want to have their dogs off leash on the trails. Which is of course not allowed. And then they look at me like I shouldn't have such an unfriendly dog out in public.
I got lost during a trail race once, with a few other people. The course was not well marked and there were no volunteers out there and we ended up taking a long route with an unintended stream crossing during a winter race (it was supposed to be a snowshoe race, but no snow turned it into a trail race). I was mad about getting my feet wet and running further than the 5k that I was not happy about doing in the first place under the conditions. Not my finest day, attitude-wise.

I was going to head to the gym for a run and yoga tonight but decided to just run from home and skip yoga so I could get a bit more work done tonight (and here I am not working). It was almost dark as I left home and I realized that there were some icy patches on the sidewalks so I had to be careful about my route and footing in the dark. Overall though not a bad run, just a little chilly as the temps seemed to drop quickly after dark.
Two more running days and the January streak is done. Which reminds me I also need to do my pull-ups yet today to maintain my streak for that as well.

@Camaramandy648 Hope your hand is okay. Burns are so painful.
@eleanorhawkins Sounds like a great run, even if you did get scared out of your skin. It's the little dogs that you have to look out for, usually. The only dog bite I've had was from a dachshund. I see that you are using Jeff Galloway. Me too. But, I just have a simple plan with times and distances to run. I haven't bought any of his books or anything. I was wondering what plan you are using and what exactly is his speed work?
@kgirlhart Glad you got out early for your run. I take a nap in my car almost every day during my break. I have become a master of the power nap. It really helps me. I hope you got one in today.
Congratulations @mbaker566 on your run AND on winning the award. That's awesome.
@LoveyChar Glad you survived both of your close calls.
I played tennis this morning. It was fun, but I didn't burn very many calories. I guess we did more standing and talking than playing. So I decided to do a treadmill walk tonight, just to burn a few more calories. I did one mile while my oven preheated. Stopped and put some vegetables in to roast. Did another mile while they cooked. It worked out great.

Way behind in the thread again. I saw a few dog stories. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners so those stories really bug me. My dog, when I had him, even off-leash would not go up to a person if I called him back.
Today I ran at least 13 miles. At some point, I noticed my watch was paused. Ops. I probably bumped when changing out my gloves. Of course, my coach's plan was for me to run 10 so I guess I might have messed up slightly7 -

LOL, on a big square.
If you didn't know, I also live in west TN. I'm a bit further north (near Missouri's tail), but try to make my way to Memphis every now and again.1 -
3 miles tonight easy pace. All went well.8

@quilteryoyo this is where it gets confusing... I'm a mix and matcher! I've been using Hal Higdon's training plans since I learned that training plans were a thing. I follow the distances on those, just I do them with my intervals rather than straight run them. I did look at Galloway's plans but wasn't convinced and prefer to stick to the devil I know. Speedwork on the current plan is just x miles at race pace, so I just run my run intervals faster! I've found pacing to be an issue but am learning to recognise how hard an effort it takes to hit target paces. It's still a learning process

@noblsheep - so glad you and your family are well and not affected by the virus outbreak. Lots of folks here are freaking out too, especially on the college campuses and with social media.
Happy belated birthday! @mbaker566! Does Speed Demon get to approve your dates? 😁
I am not going to post much about the dogs. Having been bitten (twice) last fall, when out for a run, by the neighbor's Jack Russell I am a bit sensitive. I don't run by their house any longer, have completely changed my warm up route and find I am generally more hesitant around other 'small' dogs. The spot on my calf still bothers me at times and is a reminder to be cautious. Honestly I would probably kick the sh$t out of the dog if it came after me again. Hobbes the Vizsla is mostly ok with other dogs. I don't let him go running up to people or their dogs when on leash. He and others can be very protective on leash when they wouldn't be otherwise playing (in an appropriate place) off leash.
I am also very cautious at our 4-way stop where I have to cross to get to the trail. Many cyclists have been hit there and they installed huge stop signs, replacing the normal sized ones. People still go right through. I don't trust that anyone sees me or that they will stop even if they see me until they actually do. I have come too close to being hit too many times there. I have been known to yell at drivers; they are startled when they realize oops there was someone actually in the cross walk and they didn't even look. Once or twice I have actually banged on cars as they went by me. My daughter says I should keep a full poop bag with me and throw it at the cars but I don't want to have to carry it.
Procrastinated this morning and didn't get out for a run. Decided I needed to go out for a rare, for me, evening run. It was windy and cool and I have forgotten how pretty it can be out at sunset. The only issue were the swarms of gnats. Fortunately I didn't end up swallowing any or get any in my mouth (miracle!). I did have them stuck to my forehead and face though. Will finish up the month to goal on Friday. We are taking Hobbes the Vizsla up to the local mountains tomorrow to hike a little and play in the snow. Or at least check out the area to go back next week when more snow is due. Also it looks like the prediction of heat on Sunday for the HM has been replaced with foggy and cool! Yay! I hope it holds and doesn't end up in the 80's!

First, Happy belated birthday!
Second... when we had our puppy he got veto power on anyone that came in our circle. Like, seriously. Trusted him over most people without batting an eye.3 -
Morning all!
How is the fire situation down there? I have not heard it on the news up here in a long while.

SchweddyGirl wrote: »Like I said, come race day you will have the course flagged.

So, I am way off my goal for the month. *sigh* I got home from work 2 1/2 hours later than normal yesterday. Everyone at work - prisoners and staff - were having issues yesterday. I didn’t think the day would ever end! Anyway, Chick fil a and the latest episode of Schitt’s Creek took precedence over last night’s run.
Despite it all, I feel confident about my marathon. I know I can complete it, so I am not going to stress my training plan being off. But, I do think I am also burning out on the training as well, since my free time is so limited. After this marathon, I think I am going to take a break from any races and just run as I feel I should (or not).9 -
Thanks @eleanorhawkins . I like Hal Higdon too.0

While running today, I tried to adjust my headphones (Treks Aftershoks aren't the best under a buff) and must've pressed something, because they started calling "last number dialed". Not wanting that, and not knowing who I had called last, I went into panic mode, trying to get glove off, phone out of zipper pocket and cancel the call. Fortunately it was just calling my husband, and not my boss or the father of one of my kids' friends. I'm guessing there's a way to stop it from the headphones but I haven't figured that out yet.
ETA: Just tried it, and all I had to do was press the same button again. No need to find the phone.3 -
Thank you all for the birthday wishes.
speed demon gets very skittish around new people so old girl is the judge. she approved. i've been dating him for 9 months so actually speed demon has warmed up to him. frankly, if old girl doesn't like you, you are a turd. cause she likes most people. She will judge you6
