Husband's dad runs the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon every year and this year is the 40th anniversary. He wants to run it with his dad this year (October) but he wants to take the baby. I can't leave because my 13 year-old can't miss school. I told him no. Baby, biggest momma's boy ever on a plane without me. No. Several states away. No. Then I realized/remembered that he didn't object profusely when I took little guy several states away on a plane for 2 1/2 weeks last summer. I'm torn, conflicted. What would you do? Am I being irrational or completely rational?
@LoveyChar I think you should let him do it. A race with his dad? Heck yes!! I'm all for experiences. You never know how much time you have left with someone special so if there's an opportunity like this, he should take it. Memories like those are what we keep the rest of our lives.
Besides, if the baby has issues on the plane, that for him to deal with. They'll both survive the ordeal.
From a mums perspective, how old is baby? Are you still breastfeeding or is he taking bottles/food? If not breastfeeding then yes let hubby take him! It will be really good for you to have a break - my kids are 5 and 3 and I would have definitely let them go with hubby like that as soon as I stopped breastfeeding (mostly because pumping is a Pita).
What are your actual concerns0 -
Guys, I ran 12.6k! My last long run a couple of weeks ago was 11 and I just managed that. Today not only did thr 13 feel relatively easy, I only stopped because I wanted a short cool Down walk, and my phone was digging intoy ribcage and I'd finally had enough.
It felt so good. I started about 9:10am. It was overcast but so calm. No wind. And not hot at all. I wore my crop top because last time I wore a tank I got hot and it annoyed me. It was sopping wet by the end but I was comfortable the whole time. I had my giant jelly beans and ate one every 3k, and took water when ever I needed it. I did kinda wish I had a isotonic drink toward the end, I definitely felt like I was starting to lack salt, so I'm going to have to investigate having a small drink bottle for that in the future. Anything over 12k, I definitely notice the need for that sort of thing.
Running gear!
Beach View at start
Me after getting home. Whew!
Now I'm going to lay around till about 2 when I have to get ready for work.
Oh and an icecream after the run was my choice. Specifically a chocolate covered cookies and cream icecream. Sooooo good!

Welcome back @7lenny7. You've been missed!
Hey there @Elise4270 good to see you too!
(I mean REALLY see you. Nice xrays) 😋
@LoveyChar I would let him go. It will be good for him (and give you a break too)2 -
@MegaMooseEsq Sorry you've been sick. I hope you feel better soon!!!
@rheddmobile An extra rest day was probably wise. I like that you celebrated by walking the trail. That mud looks tough.
@7lenny7 I remember you talking about that race now. Looks interesting. Not sure it is something I would ever do, but hope you have fun!
@LoveyChar I agree with @7lenny7 . You should let him do it. That time with his dad is something he'll always remember. Not being to do it may be something he would always remember to, and not in a good way. Also, I think the fact that you are rethinking it, means you already know what the right thing is.
Great run @Avidkeo !5 -

For sanity purposes, I set up a run date with a friend this afternoon. So even though I have 8 billion things to do, I left work a little early and took advantage of the 40 degree weather and chance to vent with an understanding friend. It was worth it.
I've read and distributed likes and hugs. Sorry not to comment more. Good to see some people checking in - @Elise4270 and @7lenny7 good to see you.5 -
My next race is coming up in 2.5 weeks. I've mentioned it before but was AWOL from here when I actually signed up. Well, I'm now signed up for the Sandlot Marathon, a marathon on a baseball diamond. Just 384.55 laps around the bases. It's not for everyone. The absurdity of the race is what appeals to me. That and that fact that I'll know half the people there.
This would be a great race for @AlphaHowls .
Here's a great video about the race from the local TV station.

*dew claws up*
Aye, I read about it when you posted about it previously. It would be great for me if I had time to travel.4 -
@7lenny7 Good to hear from you! I love that you are doing the Sandlot Marathon, I have read about it before and thought only true insane people would do it. So, I guess that means you!4

So, nothing real eventful tonight, other than a possessed/ malfunctioning treadmill meant I had a bit of extra walk/ recovery time in the middle of my run. I tried to trouble shoot the issue, and final resorted to the only electronics cure I know- turned it off and back on again... and did second half on the other treadmill. Which also means I’m not entirely sure on time or mileage.... other than I think I did my first sub 15 minute mile of the current reboot/regroup. Which gives me hope.
So, extrapolating from known factors, I THINK I did 2.3 today for 23/25 maybe. Which means I have 3 days to hit my goal. And although I feel for those missing goal for the first time.... if I pull it off in the next three days, it may be my first time HITTING my set goal in my long but intermittent history of being on the thread.... if it’s not the first, i can count the other occurrences on one hand. So, hopefully I find that to be motivating.
I did follow my intuition and get new shoes while I was in a real town over the weekend, and that was totally the right call, even if my budget disagrees. So it was first real run in the new shoes. If for some reason I am falling short of goal.... I may add my shoe testing mileage just to hit the darn thing for occasion.
And although @7lenny7 is doing something nearly as crazy... the thing I’ve seen lately that totally put @alphahowls on my mind, was something on a quarantined Chinese runner doing 50k/31 miles via laps in his living room..... y’all are nuts, but I love ya and appreciate you anyways!9 -
Hey welcome back @7lenny7! That race is nuts but I am sure you will have a blast running it!
@elise4270 - what is a THR?
@loveychar - I agree with everyone else that you should let your husband take the little one to the race with him and his grandfather - what an awesome thing that would be - all 3 of them in the race together!
Thanks for the well wishes for Hobbes. He is doing a bit better, even perked up a bit to play this afternoon. I did make him go for a walk this morning figuring it would be good for him to get out and smell all the smells.
Recovery foods - when it is hot as is has been the last couple of days here (expecting to hit 90F tomorrow) I love just cutting up an orange and eating it. Sometimes just off the tree and sometimes chilled in the fridge. I am also a big proponent of chocolate milk although I make mine with Starbucks mocha powder which is actually just really dark chocolate powder and sugar. Sometimes I even add a bit of coffee to make it a really chocolaty mocha.9 -

I made a chocolate ‘let’s call it a recovery’ drink after my run-bootcamp-run this morning. 60g of chocolate ice cream, 120mls of milk, a shot of coffee, all whizzed together to a creamy foamy deliciousness. Went from shattered to feeling fab in a matter of minutes. And only 200cal. Will definitely be doing it again!11 -
I'm still not feeling great. Biked to the school with kiddo, planning to go on to the store... and had to speed back home because someone went to school without taking their bookbag. So I "counted" the second trip to school/store, and figure a 15-minute bike ride is enough for the day. My daily goal from yesterday at least through Sunday is 2000 non-junk calories (plus eat back any workout calories) and to get some rest and get back to feeling good. It's kind of fun
Suunto updated their app, and now I have this cool visual of my weekly/monthly training. I actually like it better than the Strava version of this, because here I can see all three sports equally in one screen, instead of having to select one main sport at a time. Cool.10 -
It's 1130pm. Just got home from work. Sitting in my spa under the milky-way. It's beautiful.
Just thought I'd share. Good night!12 -

welcome back @7lenny7
i would let him go @LoveyChar These are things that make memories for later.
glad hobbs is perking up @shanaber
might try to do a couple of miles tonight. but we are doing partner aerial plus my normal teaching plus training plus tweaked my back last night in class.
what partner aerial looks like in spoiler7 -
Thank you for the responses, everyone and like @7lenny7 said, he'll survive the plane and all of it. Truth is, though, we were talking about everything last night and right now he's supposed to be running two miles and he can't even truly run two miles. He has to walk/run so he's not even sure he could run a full in 7 months. His plan is one year long but he said he found a plan to speed up the training process so he would be ready. If he does get ready in time, he'll go and take little guy with him. Time for him to get disciplined and determined of he's going to do more than talk about it, I guess.
@Avidkeo I stopped 6 months ago. He's slept with me every single night of his life, though. I told husband he needs to lay down with him at night until he falls asleep because he shouldn't be screaming his sweet little head off, so so wrong. It's little worries like that...and I don't really think he'd let him scream but I still have anxieties.
@mbaker566 Aeriel yoga makes me think of Cirque du Soleil. It's lovely, very artistic.
I have been such a slacker, not running much, overeating. Today I'm on track. It's Thursday, February 27th and I'm on track. I hope everyone has a lovely day...I hope everyone is hitting their goals and if not, striving counts for a lot...

@LoveyChar let him go. I let my son go to Alabama and Washington. Hardest thing ever but it’s so good for them to get out in the world and learn that there is so much more than what they see every day. You’ll regret it later (i think) if you don’t let him have this.

Your husband can get ready for the race. My plan was from zero to marathon ready in six months!3 -

I'm going to take a whole three minutes to vent my frustrations here, okay?
I have five siblings, two of which live in Nashville and are the reasons I chose Nashville for my marathon. One of the two in Nashville... has a habit of thinking something is great and making plans and then once you agree, she backs out.
Here's how it's gone recently:
"Are you all in if we decide to do the camping trip again this year for the fourth of July?"
Me: Sure! Let me get the schedule with the kids and their dad worked out and we're in!
"No, maybe not actually. I don't know what our plans will be. But you should still go!"
Me: Wut?
And....
"Hey! Do you have plans for your birthday next week?"
Me: Nope - no plans. Probably just running."
"Awesome! How about if I come visit you?"
Me: Ohhhh that would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!
"Actually, since you're already coming for the marathon, I'll just see you then."
Me: Wut?
And then - I'm trying to book my flight to Nashville for the marathon last night, so I asked both sisters if they think either of them or their significant other or husband or in-laws that ARE ALSO RACING THE SAME RACE AS ME - could someone please pick me up from the airport just after 2PM - if not, I can get an uber.
"I don't know, I'd plan on getting an Uber - I don't know what I'm doing that day."
.......ummm..... what?
It will all be fine but this is all super weird and super annoying.11 -
@Camaramandy648 Oh my gosh, siblings just have the most amazing ways to get under our skin, don't they?1
-
@Camaramandy648 My brother would fit right in with your family. I've stopped inviting him to Thanksgiving. Every year he'd accept the invitation, but never come.0
-
Family - disenfranchised @r$eh0l3s who used to belittle you growing up and for some reason of blood relation we think we have to be friends with. Made the attempts, been blanked too many years, keep in touch with those we like, ignore the rest.1
-
@AUTUMNBLADE75 and @TheMrWobbly I am just flabbergasted.
Mind you, we are not without our family drama. But it seems like with every thing that comes up along the way, it never ceases to be next level in someone. Some of them always find a way to outdo themselves.0 -
@Camaramandy648 I agree with Mr.Wobbly. Also, I say no to everything... everything... everything involving "distant" family!!! Disappointment will dissipate if your family members learn to say "no" up front instead of creating animosity later. Now you know they'll flake out. It's what they do. You're nicer than me. I'd probably tell them to eff off if they can't commit one way or the other. It's yes or no, but don't get wishy washy on me.
Years ago my mom wanted to take my girls to Disney World for spring break. She also wanted my brother and I to go (he did), all expenses paid and staying in Disney World with any and everything you would want there (they loved breakfast with the princesses) and then to her winter home in Florida. I said no, immediately. I didn't have to think about it. I'd probably rather walk over hot coals and suffer the consequences of it than get on a plane or sleep in the same room with her. Then years later she extended a like invitation to San Francisco. Again no... I wouldn't even consider it, but I also wouldn't mislead or up expectations either by saying yes upfront and turning on the backend after plans have already been made. Now I get no invitations, which is great and what I want. I'm sorry your siblings can't get it together.
Also, thank you for your input. He will have a lot of work to do if he wants to run it. I'm so excited for your Marathon! Nashville is a pretty city, I think.2 -

I ran 5 miles again this morning. It was cold! My weather app said 26°F feels like 26F° with 3 mph wind. Strava said 29°F feels like 23°F with 6 mph winds. Either way it was too cold for me, but not the 20 mph winds from yesterday, so it wasn't too bad. I could have waited until lunchtime to run. It is already 55°F out there and it is supposed to get up to 66°F later today, but the winds are back up to 12 mph. I think I dislike wind more than I dislike cold. It was actually a pretty morning. It was clear and there were lots of stars out. And it was light by the time I got home. I don't mind starting out in the dark, but I do really like it when the sky is blue in the morning and it isn't dark when I get home. I guess the time change in a couple of weeks will ruin that, but for now I am enjoying the light mornings. Today's run should be the last run for me for February and I'm closing it out at 88.82 miles. It isn't the 100 miles I set out to do, but I'm ok with it. It was a short month, we had a couple of snow days and I took some extra rest for injury prevention which is more important to me than an arbitrarily set goal.
@Camaramandy648, @autumnblade75 ,@themrwobbly and @LoveyChar I guess I am lucky. My four sisters and I are all pretty close and close to our parents as well. My husband isn't really close with his brother, but we are close to his mother. And we are close to our kids and our nieces and nephews too.

@hanlonsk I heard about that guy doing the ultra in his living room. That is just wild! He had a great time too, 4:48:44. I guess that means no more excuses for the rest of us.

I've been going back this month to try to see what everyone's up to. Congrats to @shanaber @hamsterwheel6 @MegaMooseEsq @polskagirl01 @ContraryMaryMary @T1DCarnivoreRunner @rheddmobile (reading "Stanky creek" always cracks me up, lol) for your races. Sorry @janejellyroll that you missed yours. I'm sure there's more race reports out there but I'm only caught up to page 25.
@katharmonic I loved the skiing photos!
@autumnblade75 I'm late to the race nutrition discussion but here are my thoughts. When I ran my first marathon I was all into calculating my calorie burn, glycogen burn, required carb intake, and all that. It finally occurred to me that the only thing that I needed to know was the maximum calorie intake my body could handle per hour. In a marathon you simply cannot replace all the glycogen you burn. Thus, if you can determine your maximum calorie intake per hour, just hit that number. Through trial and error I've determined that I can take in 300 calories per hour without getting an upset stomach, so that's the number I go for. The range I've heard is 200 to 300 calories, depending on the individual and the ambient temperature (hotter temps = less calories/hour because more blood is at the skin to help cool off). The way you find this out is to try to overdo it during a long run. Plan on 200 calories/hour and see if that works. The next time 250, then 300, and so on. If at some point your stomach gets upset, you know you've gone to far. For me, once I got to 300 calories, I felt that was enough and stopped there. I have an iron stomach when racing.
As far as how to get those calories, I'm also cheap. I generally rely on aid station food during ultras but road marathons are different. I used a combination of the Gatorade they served at the water stops (if you can find out how big the cups are, figure half that amount is what you'll actually get since they don't fill them up all the way and you'll likely spill some) and some honeywater I brought myself. I tried the gels, and they work fine, but were too expensive so I took honey, mixed honey 50/50 with water and filled a soft flask to carry with me. Not only did that allow me to take smaller portions, but more often, it was much neater than using sticky gel packets. I also carried a water bottle to wash down the honey water. You could add salt if you think that's needed.
The equation becomes (expected number of hours racing) x (calories/hour) = Total Calorie Intake. Then figure out the number of water stops with Gatorade x the calories in the amount you plan to drink (this is where it's good to know the cup size...if not, eyeball it) and subtract that from the Total Calorie Intake
Don't run all your long runs fully fueled. It's good to run some fasted or low fueled so your body can learn to burn more fat and less glycogen. Those runs may not feel the best, but it helps in the long run and saves more calories for real food after the run. It's quite rare that I run a long run fully fueled but my goal is to maximize my fat burn for ultras. The furthest I've gone without food, or water, is 19 miles, but that was in the winter.
One of the many reasons I started ultrarunning is the aid station fare. During races I've eaten pizza, cheeseburgers, bacon, pancakes, quesadillas, grilled cheese, M&Ms, potato chips, and even sushi. Then there's the beer and Fireball.

I was waffling on gym vs no gym yesterday, and then I remembered that I have a perfectly well-stocked home gym in my basement that I haven't used for a year, so I did a 20 minute Fitness Blender upper body workout and then hopped on the exercise bike for 15 minutes. BOOM! It felt amazing, and I'm feeling much more confident about running to the gym this evening.9

Okay so laying it out there. My eldest brother I never really got on with, he was the golden child, religious, joined the Uni RAF squad, played piano well, did well at Uni, dropped dead at 32 so there was no completing with that. You know the friendship parachute, multicoloured, people grab a corner, if you can find an example of that before he 'came up' with it in the 80s let me know but my Mum always said he created it. Nothing wrong with the guy mind you.
My other brother, we used to visit him and his first wife three times a year and they had two children slightly older than ours, it only dawned on me recently they never came to visit us, just my parents a few miles away and we were welcome to join. The only time they came to see us was to use us a week long babysitting service so they could go to the states. Before they got divorced he was a complete ****, nothing short of disgraceful, his wife had gained more than a few pounds and his 'anti-fat person' streak was on full display. Others didn't see this and his presented persona was ex-RAF superfit, charity concious ironman competitor who would do training cycle rides to my parents who were 60 miles away, do odd jobs and ride home again.
We had a couple of successful 'family' breaks when the children were younger, everyone gets on. A couple of years ago I suggested we all get together again, thought my retired parents would enjoy organising it as they always take over anyway. Nothing happened. I asked repeatedly, no interest. Boxing Day my niece sends a facebook post 'Having the greatest time with the best fam ever" both brothers families and my parents. Saracastically replied "Glad my idea of getting together worked for some". The following year my Mum's cancer won in late October, they did it again. To be fair my brother and I had already said at the funeral "let's not pretend we are going to keep in touch or anything". So they don't like us, not a problem, knowing where you stands means no wasted energy on it.
Whilst this is my opinion my children, who asked the question why weren't invited, have done their own homework through extend family and have come to the conclusion, not worth bothering with.7
