We would be going this afternoon for a walking trip. "Walking the Fruit and Cider Trail".
It would be 4° C and sleet. Breezy.
All our other cruises we have had glorious weather, even the one last October, which was brilliant sunshine most of the time, though a bit chilly.
I am feeling lucky, though I would love to have my money back safely in my savings account.
Hoping the Zoom comes off this afternoon. These are my old school friends. "The girls". 55 years ago we were in Paris together, staying at youth hostels and living on dry baguette. Adventures!

In 2001, I burnt my left foot to the bone.
I did go out the day after to see a doctor but decided not to do that again and stayed inside my 800 sq ft apartment with my 3 cats for the next 5 weeks.
During those 5 weeks, a cycling friend came to see me 2 or 3 times in the beginning, my supervisor visited twice to drop off work, groceries were delivered about 3 times toward the end, and I had a homecare nurse come once a day to change my dressing.
Otherwise ... I was on my own, hardly able to move, in my house for 5 weeks. And even when I started walking again ... I didn't go much of anywhere.
And it was OK.
Our current situation isn't new but it's much better than that!

Hello everyone.
I had a somewhat rocky start to the week yesterday. I kept getting kicked off of the network, the BDM (Business Development Manager) could not focus, and lots of catching up to do because of me taking Friday off. The day flew by with some frustration. So I found I had to take my own advice that I give to those who like to complain all of the time, "It is called work for a reason. If it was fun it would be called fun." Now, do not get me wrong, I do enjoy my job, but like most there are some work days I just want to get behind me.
Most times putting this list together is easy. Other days I have to stretch a little because my brain is not fully up to speed.- I am grateful to have another healthy day of life.
- I am grateful for the aroma of my morning coffee.
- I am grateful for this time in history. It has provided a test run for future pandemics/hard times*.
- I am grateful for the commute time savings. I have got many little projects completed around my home.
*I have lived in SFL for almost 30 years. Over this time I have learned to be hurricane prepared every year regardless of the past year's experience. Starting in January/February I review my pantry and start taking advantage of store sales to stock up on canned goods and long-life food products. Through the start of the season, May, I stock up on water, maintain the storm shutters, pare down the freezer and refrigerator (I have lost 100s of dollars in frozen foods and condiments), check battery stock, review and update my hurricane plan, and a host of other hurricane tasks. As a storm approaches there is another list with tasks to get the house and myself ready to weather a storm. It includes pulling out the coolers and loading them with ice, bringing in outdoor furniture, pulling out battery operated fans, tvs, radios, etc., prepping foods ahead of the storm, and some other mundane tasks.
Through this experience it is reinforcing some habits I must put in place and others I must reinforce. Most of us have read/heard about preparing for a loss of a job, retirement, children's futures, etc.. We may or may not have another pandemic, but we will all have moments in time where we find ourselves saying, oh, I wish I was better prepared, I wish I had saved more, I wish, I wish, I wish. As preparation items come to mind I am writing them down and am taking some of the free time gained to put things in motion and plan for others.
Geez, I am unusually reflective this morning and the time is clicking away. I must run for now and get my morning routine completed.
Hugs and prayers to all.

Morning, all,
So angry about so much, but here's where my rage is lighting this morning. Because everything has become political, this too, is vaguely political, so I put it in a spoiler. Avoid if you're tired of the noise about the virus. I certainly am.Getting so horribly frustrated with the way the news about the virus is being delivered in the United States... I understand it is a tragedy that any person dies from something that could have been prevented, and if it's someone you love, you don't care at all what the overall percentages are, you are heartbroken.
But the news media keep up the drumbeat of more deaths in the U.S. than any other country - and never ever note that we are also the third most populated country in the world. When you compare across the world, as of yesterday, the United States at 71 deaths per million population is FAR behind Spain at 380 per million and less than half that of the UK at 167 per million. Australia has only had 2 deaths per million people due to the coronavirus. The lockdown state-by-state is working, but I guess that doesn't make people turn on the TV.
I will bet that this country will open up for business far too soon in this cycle and cause more deaths that could have been prevented. I happen to live in a state where the governor refuses to pass a shelter-in-place ordinance statewide--and watching what's happening in South Dakota makes me not even want to go outside. (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/apr/13/south-dakota-pork-plant-closes-after-200-workers-contract-covid-19) And if you like Smithfield products, you might want to buy what you can get, because another month and they'll be in short supply.
Last on the rage parade is the USS Theodore Roosevelt sailor who died--and whose captain was cashiered 12 days ago for noting that, without assistance and the ability to get off the ship, that his men and women would be in danger of getting the virus and that they did not deserve to die. (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/14/sailor-dies-from-covid-19-and-600-test-positive-after-outbreak-on-uss-theodore-roosevelt-guam)
In slightly better news, in a virtual all-staff meeting yesterday, my CEO noted that we will remain offsite working online through at least June 5--and that we would follow the governor's lead on that return. However, she also noted that the organization will phase back to work (whether June 5 or later) over at least a two-week period to allow parents to have a chance to get children cared for--and that if they could not get them cared for, they would be allowed to work remotely until they can. It's a good place to work for.
Anyway - I have to go jump on the elliptical because I did not yesterday, and I slept for ca-ca last night--distinct cause and effect there, and oddly reassuring. If I exercise, I get to sleep later. Whee!
Have to head into town to our shuttered offices this morning as one of my grantors who gives us a few thousand each year simply refuses to give up the printed ten copies (no paper clips, no staples, three-holed punched, financials only on green paper, collated in the exact order listed, and mailed to arrive no later than April 21) demand. Most are being incredibly generous and accommodating, I might add. We've had three now let us know that any funds that remain unspent from their grants may be shifted to operations cost without having to ask. Can't even tell you how rare operational funding is from any grantor these days.
Do love y'all, sorry about the rant,

LisaLOL. My rage this morning is about the custody battle between Dr Greene and her husband and the way it is being aired on social media. Ugh.
I am totally with you about the media citing misleading statistics when reporting how many are affected by the virus.
Also, disheartened by this video about the Bad Fairy Corona Dust emanating from infected people's mouths and noses whether sneezing or not:

So much to do today.

I agree with you about the statistics. Countries like Norway, Denmark and Finland only have about 5 million people each. We have 65 million and the US 330 million.
My kettle has arrived and I am inordinately pleased with it. In fact, I'm in love.
50 people were fined in Brighton and Hove over the weekend for travelling to our beaches and lolling about on them. We didn't go down to the seafront after early Friday, so I am feeling .
Kate UK - I absolutely LOVE the hair! Feeling a bit jealous.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately too. I know I'm extremely lucky that I have the chance to work from home and that DH is still able to go to his job (he's considered an essential worker). He's also getting a little extra in his paycheck for not taking leave time right now. So between that, the stimulus check that we should be getting, the extra I'm getting in my check for additional duties right now, and the fact that some interest rates are being lowered (or down to 0% in the case of student loans), I'm reworking our budget to put as much towards paying off our debt as possible, while still keeping enough in savings to cover us if something should happen. We'd like to be able to retire in the next 5-6 years and I'm avoiding looking at our 401k balances at the moment . So trying to get as much paid off now as possible.
Lisa - I agree with you about the news.I've pretty much stopped watching most of it. I understand reporting the numbers, but maybe they should try sometimes to focus more on the positive - for example, as of this morning MO has 4388 cases but only 114 have died. I understand some of those may still die, but that's still close to a 97.4% survival rate, and that's just the people who've been tested. I'm sure there are a lot more mild cases that aren't even being reported. Yes, this is a horrible thing, and some people won't survive, but many more will. And I feel like that should be reported too.
Time to get some work done. Have a good day all!

Penny - YES. I would apply to you as a funder in a heartbeat! One of my favorite sites (https://nonprofitaf.com/) calls the grant writer's holy grail "MYGOD" Multi-Year General Operating Dollars . One of the funnier nonprofit-oriented sites I've ever found. He seems to be a really good guy. I have hopes that something good may come out of this whole mess, with the foundations loosening up their purse strings - and if the economy survives in reasonable shape, they might. If we do fade into a recession, my job will instantly be like pulling chicken's teeth... I do know that people need the basics first, food, shelter, employment--but Girl Scouts is the "then what" that comes after.
I did find one bright spot (very esoteric, sorry for those who are bored). Girl Scouts skirts health items very lightly, some healthy living-type badges, healthy cooking - few direct medical programs. There are foundations that give substantial money to medically oriented programs, and I've been searching for a way to make that work without notable success for three years. Yesterday, in passing, I found a medical concept called Social Determinants of Health which looks very promising for the way we operate - Building a girl-led, girl-only social network, with the addition of caring adult support for girls. I need to get some research done on outcomes in that field to write it up, but I'm optimistic that I can find a way to utilize that crowbar.
Karen - Yeah, I just had to flinch on that one - full up with my rage levels at this moment.
And speaking of flinching, if anyone likes physical humor (I don't much, usually) find "Flinch" on Netflix. Stupid hilarious, but for me, it's largely funny only because these people put themselves in that position for a little fame and/or money. No sympathies. I think we could all use a smile these days. I've already bingewatched "Corner Gas" twice. Still looking for something that reliably makes me smile. My drama quotient is full up.
Ah... cooled down, time to shower and head for town. Mandated by management to wear both gloves and mask in the building, even though alone, to leave as little contaminants behind as possible. Works for me!
Later, y'all,
Lisa in AR3 -
Goes with Lisa's rantLisa your rant is adds to what I was talking about. The media, the politicians, systems in place, and individuals all have their stories and check lists that may or may not be in your best interest. That is why I believe knowledge and information is so important. I always consider the source of the information I am receiving. The tendency is to look for a scapegoat so there is someone to blame. I have said it before and I will say it again it is the virus that is to blame. I do what I am able to protect myself and family.
We have a stay at home order in our state and the social distancing too. Because how people are complying makes me wants to just stay in my own bubble because of our son I can't. I think that is why I do resent his smoking and wanting to go out for fast food all the time. His actions endanger him and me. I have almost had two traffic accidents in the driving over to his house twice a day. I was exposed to someone coughing without covering their cough withing 6 feet of me because of going over to his house to take care of him. It happened at a gas station. I would not have had to get the gas if it were not for him. I am in charge of his meds so it in not an option not to go.
I did learn from the gas station episode that I have to wear my mask at all times when I leave our house or son's.4
