I needed 6.5 more miles to hit my goal of 300 miles for the month, so I went 26 just to make sure. Hope to get 2-3 more rides in before the end of the month, if real life doesn’t get in the way too much.0

Another puncture. Figured I'd replace the 10 year old tube but the "Slime" tube I'd bought partially inflated but then would inflate no further and would not deflate. Didn't even get as far as putting it on the wheel. Think the slime had sealed the valve (and being a novice I don't have a valve core removal tool). Will be sticking to normal tubes from now on i think!0

Punctures are a real PITA!!
If your tyres are also 10 years old they may also be past the end of their service life as they deteriorate whether they are being used or not. They can also fail spectacularly (that spikes your heartrate...) so worth inspecting closely and replacing if they look at all perished. But beware the internal carcass can also have deteriorated especially if stored damp or flat.1 -
Huh, I only noticed yesterday that Strava removed the route planner for non-paying users. I haven't done much cycling after moving to a new town this winter, so I don't have any good cycling routes figured out yet. I wanted to build and ride a nice after-work-loop last night. Instead I wasted a lot of time reading about changes to Strava features, looking for a new planning website, and then testing two possible candidates (ride with GPS and komoot). Until I realised the sun would set soon and I was still sitting on the couch
In the end the only ride I managed was 15km aimlessly looping around the neighbourhood and through the fields - sometimes on trails that were a bit too bumpy for my taste, but with nice scenery.
Afterwards, I played some more with komoot and came up with a 30km route I'd like to try this week, if I find time - maybe skip one of the planned runs? I'm at 120km of my 125km running goal, but only at 59km of my 100km cycling goal, so that's probably what I should do...
What are all of you using to keep track of your distance and to plan your rides?
I'm worried Strava might be taking away more features from free users in the future, and at 60$/year the paid membership is too expensive for my taste. That's more than twice what I pay for my Zombies,Run! subscription, and I'm a lot more attached to that app than to Strava. I'd be willing to pay 2$ per month for Strava, but not 5...

@AlanKmfp Sorry about all those punctures! Apologies if I state something that is obvious to you, but you've checked that there's no sharp object still hiding inside the tyre? Sometimes I'm in a rush to get my bike working again and skip that, only to regret it when I get a new puncture right away after reinserting the patched inner tube...
What sijomial wrote about the age wearing down the tyres is also a good point. If the rubber is very old, it will get quite fragile. And braking performance suffers too.
Kudos on taking up cycling on an old bike! I never realised cycling could be fun until I tried out a road bike. The bike I had as a student was a heavy monster that squealed and rattled wherever I went, and I never would have imagined going any distance further than a few kilometers on it (and that much only because I didn't have a car and it was cheaper and more convenient than public transport).0 -

I have a Garmin watch. It seems to be fairly accurate. At least, accurate enough for me.
Monthly actual progress = 197.75 miles / Monthly Goal = 100 miles
5/2 - 22 miles
5/5 - 22 miles
5/13 - 25 miles
5/16 - 26.5 miles
5/17 - 30.5 miles
5/20- 22 miles
5/22 - 22.75 miles
5/24 - 27 miles1 -

"What are all of you using to keep track of your distance and to plan your rides? "
For my more sporty rides and also navigation in places I don't know a Garmin Edge cycle computer which feeds into Garmin Connect and on to Strava.
For indoors Wattbike linked to Wattbike Hub which also feeds into Strava.
For local leisure riding just Strava app on my phone.
(Strava is where the totality of my rides ends up.)
Where I get my rides from is very varied. A lot just from exploring, seeing where people go, some from Audax events or defined Audax routes, some copied from rides/routes organised by bike shops, bike event promotors and charity bike routes, some copied from people I follow on Strava or know in real life. I've also used Ride With GPS and GPSies (which I think is now joined with AllTrails ???).
I resisted paying for Strava until they made segment leaderboard tracking a paid item and as I find chasing PR's and leaderboard progression both motivating and fun I did take up a subscription. For me 5$ /month when I'm probably going to do 40 hours this month is OK as it's my main hobby and the extra features are interesting to me.

I use an app simply titled Bike Routes. It opens with where you are as center of the map, and you drop pins along a route you are thinking about taking. The distance that it tells you the route will be seems very accurate. It also shows elevations and how much you will be climbing. It’s decent for free, that’s for sure.1

Strava to track my distances.
Ride with GPS to plan my routes ... or I just go without a plan.

Thanks for all the replies!
I have a TomTom GPS watch that lets me measure the distance, but it doesn't allow for any route planning. If I go without a plan, I end up on horrible mud or gravel trails where I have to carry my bike instead of riding it
I thought about looking for a local group to join, but the only one I found is currently not doing any rides (Corona). And even if they were, I don't think I'm fast enough - they have two training dates usually, but one is for people doing an average speed of at least 30km/h, the other has a minimum average speed of 25km/h. My average speed is a lot slower than that! Something to train, I guessThen maybe I would also be tempted to chase Strava segment PRs.
For now I planned a 25km ride with komoot for tomorrow evening. I'll check out Bike Routes and Ride with GPS too.1 -
90 minutes on Zwift for me this morning. Tomorrow I’m planning 2 hours outside, hopefully the weather will be good again!2

Cycling for me on Thursday and Friday. Which were also the first days since 11 weeks that I went to the office! For half a day only, after coordination with colleagues to ensure we meet as few people as possible.... But it was nice to get a chance to work at a real desk instead of the dining table, and print a few things on the office printer rather than using my private ink and paper. And I got to use the bike to go to work, of course!
On Thursday I took the direct way to work (12km) and enjoyed a scenic longer route back (26km). When summing up my rides in the evening, I notices I was at 99.8km of my 100km monthly goal
So another bike commute on Friday, for another 13.4km + 12.9 km there and back (always slightly different distances, since I'm still experimenting to find the best route).
126.1km of cycling for May.1 -
80km in the sunshine for me today. I'm riding again tomorrow so will update my monthly total after that3

Thanks Nikki. Yep, did check the inside of the tyres so all good there but the tyres are the ones that came on the bike so are 10 - 11 years old. They have some tread left but do have some sidewall cracks so probably do need replacing. I've done some basic maintenance but am trying to spend as little as possible as once we are properly out of lockdown I will likely start looking at something new. I guess new tyres are next on the list though along with rear brake pads.
The bike is heavy and whilst I've managed to get the gears working the indexing is still somewhat vague! It's served me well given it's been neglected but I do wonder how much better off I'd be if was on something a bit lighter.
In terms of route planning, Strava is doing a few months free trial so you could always carry on with that until you find an alternative. Garmin has route planning and I've used Endomondo's planner a few times which is free.
Cheers,

Walking, jogging and cycling. My May didn't go quite as planned. I was up to my eyeballs in university assignments and just couldn't get out as much as I wanted. However, I've got one exam in June, then I'm off uni until mid-July so hopefully exercise will increase!

So good to see all of you conversing and cycling here.
I'll start a June thread shortly.

138km/86 miles today. a nice day out on the bikes for my birthday, sunny and we headed to some of the less busy spots on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors.
Total for the month is 933 miles - 685 of them outside and the rest on Zwift. I think that's my biggest cycling month ever, largely due to not having much to do other than riding my bike!3 -
Round up for May which turned out to be a wonderfully warm, sunny and dry month were I am.
Goals - 500 miles / a 100km ride / 25,000' of climbing
Actual - 662 miles / one 100km ride / 26,000' of climbing.
Also did my first "drive the bike to a new area and go exploring" ride since lockdown restrictions were eased.
Think that's this month's 43 hours is the most I ridden. Neglecting my strength training due to closed gym means I don't have that fatigue to factor in.3 -
May is a wrap for me.
Actual = 254.75 miles
Goal = 100 miles
5/2 - 22 miles
5/5 - 22 miles
5/13 - 25 miles
5/16 - 26.5 miles
5/17 - 30.5 miles
5/20- 22 miles
5/22 - 22.75 miles
5/24 - 27 miles
5/28 - 25.5 miles
5/30 - 31.5 miles4 -
Possibly less miles in a month than some of you have done in a day but hey, it's the taking part that counts
As a newbie / returnee my goal in April and May was 40 miles. June goal is 100 miles.
May: 65.78 miles.
April: 50.43 miles.
March: 6.98 miles.
Previous 8 years or so: 0 miles.2 -
300 miles was the goal this month, and in 18 rides I went 386 miles, burned 14,500 calories and was in the saddle for 30 hours and 24 minutes.
All are records for me in a month. Like Alan, I didn’t do much riding most of the last decade or so. The last year I turned my life around and there is no place I would rather be most days than riding my bike. I’m going to get to Helens level one day😂
Seriously tho, good job to all of you. 🚲 💪3 -

HA! Needed to really double look at this one, as my name is Helen! KNEW it could not mean me, as I seriously failed to get back in the saddle this month. I had planned a few more days, but I was sore on a few of them (going through some shoulder pain, I start OT tomorrow) and rained on others, Oh well, June is another month.
GOAL: 25 miles
5/22 - 8.92 miles (8.92 miles done, 16.08 to go) **** GOAL NOT MET****
2 -
I'm not sure how sustainable it is in conjunction with real life, but at the moment all I seem to do is eat, sleep, cycle and work from home so there's plenty of time to get some miles in! I also won a years cycle coaching back in November so my routine has been a bit more bike heavy than it used to be.3
