Just a short ride for me this week. Stupid reason - I had mapped out a 25km route, but shortly after the start I had to do some emergency braking to avoid a car that came out of a side street without looking. I stopped in time, but hit my heel / achilles tendon with the pedal (put my foot down before I was at a complete standstill). It really hurt afterwards, so a few minutes later I decided to go back home. Two days later, the spot is still a bit swollen, and I have a nice purple bruise...

Instead I spent the evening taking apart an ancient bike. I have no idea how old it is, I guess between 30-40 years. I bought it for20 Euro to leave it at work, for going from one side of the campus to the other. It's a bit large for me, but I figured I could solve that by adjusting the handlebar. Wasn't as easy as I expected, given the state of the screws. I also found out the headset is rather dilapidated, I think I might have to replace that. And the previous owner didn't want to waste money on handlebar tape, so he superglued plumbing isolation around the handlebars and wrapped electric tape around afterwards. What a mess!
I don't want to spend a lot of money on this bike, but taking it completely apart might be a nice exercise in bike repairs. Better than practicing on my good bike

12km this week. 44km for the month. Next week will have to be spectacular if I want to make 100km this month!

Hit my 500 mile target for May but having to work hard to keep my climbing goal on target - 74% done.

Set aside a day to head into the Surrey Hills AONB only for my bike to pick that day to refuse to go into bottom gear.
Climb I was on is about a 5 minute slog in bottom gear mostly between 8 and 12% before levelling out bit.
Really quite hateful with at least three false summits just to demoralise you, but a very good hill for training.

Traffic volume seems to be picking up again sadly but weather has been amazingly good for riding where I live, too warm for me to manage any more home to home 100km rides.

Set out on a bike ride this morning, planned 7-10 miles. However, didn't realize my watch was THAT low on battery! Just over 8 miles into the ride, I looked down & watch was stone cold dead. Start my phone, finish up my ride, get back to my car. Unclip my left foot and try to unclip my right and the shoe got stuck in the clip as my body started leaning...and fat girl go boom! Fitting end to what was a decent ride only to find out that I didn't even make a full 9 miles! Grrr.

    GOAL: 25 miles

    5/22 - 8.92 miles (8.92 miles done, 16.08 to go)

Lockdown and having more free time working from home motivated me to get on my bike for the first time in about 8 years.

Compared to other posts here my mileage is really poor, I did 50.5 miles in April and so far 37 miles in May, longest ride is 15 miles but I still feel a sense of achievement given I'm overweight, have not been in the saddle for years and am riding a cheap heavy hybrid which has been in the shed for 8 years or so.

I think my biggest achievement is not giving up despite a puncture on my second outing and an inner tube failing on another ride (probably due to age, it had perished by the valve). Would have been so easy to just put the bike away and forget about it but I bought a few cheap tools, puncture kit, tubes and watched a few you tube videos to refresh my memory (previous time I fixed a puncture was about 35 years ago) and got back on the road.

    Open to friend requests.

I needed 6.5 more miles to hit my goal of 300 miles for the month, so I went 26 just to make sure. Hope to get 2-3 more rides in before the end of the month, if real life doesn’t get in the way too much.

Another puncture. Figured I'd replace the 10 year old tube but the "Slime" tube I'd bought partially inflated but then would inflate no further and would not deflate. Didn't even get as far as putting it on the wheel. Think the slime had sealed the valve (and being a novice I don't have a valve core removal tool). Will be sticking to normal tubes from now on i think!

    Punctures are a real PITA!!

If your tyres are also 10 years old they may also be past the end of their service life as they deteriorate whether they are being used or not. They can also fail spectacularly (that spikes your heartrate...) so worth inspecting closely and replacing if they look at all perished. But beware the internal carcass can also have deteriorated especially if stored damp or flat.

Huh, I only noticed yesterday that Strava removed the route planner for non-paying users. I haven't done much cycling after moving to a new town this winter, so I don't have any good cycling routes figured out yet. I wanted to build and ride a nice after-work-loop last night. Instead I wasted a lot of time reading about changes to Strava features, looking for a new planning website, and then testing two possible candidates (ride with GPS and komoot). Until I realised the sun would set soon and I was still sitting on the couch >:) In the end the only ride I managed was 15km aimlessly looping around the neighbourhood and through the fields - sometimes on trails that were a bit too bumpy for my taste, but with nice scenery.
    pc2dswk916hk.png

Afterwards, I played some more with komoot and came up with a 30km route I'd like to try this week, if I find time - maybe skip one of the planned runs? I'm at 120km of my 125km running goal, but only at 59km of my 100km cycling goal, so that's probably what I should do...

What are all of you using to keep track of your distance and to plan your rides?
I'm worried Strava might be taking away more features from free users in the future, and at 60$/year the paid membership is too expensive for my taste. That's more than twice what I pay for my Zombies,Run! subscription, and I'm a lot more attached to that app than to Strava. I'd be willing to pay 2$ per month for Strava, but not 5...

@AlanKmfp Sorry about all those punctures! Apologies if I state something that is obvious to you, but you've checked that there's no sharp object still hiding inside the tyre? Sometimes I'm in a rush to get my bike working again and skip that, only to regret it when I get a new puncture right away after reinserting the patched inner tube...
What sijomial wrote about the age wearing down the tyres is also a good point. If the rubber is very old, it will get quite fragile. And braking performance suffers too.

Kudos on taking up cycling on an old bike! I never realised cycling could be fun until I tried out a road bike. The bike I had as a student was a heavy monster that squealed and rattled wherever I went, and I never would have imagined going any distance further than a few kilometers on it (and that much only because I didn't have a car and it was cheaper and more convenient than public transport).

I have a Garmin watch. It seems to be fairly accurate. At least, accurate enough for me.

    Monthly actual progress = 197.75 miles / Monthly Goal = 100 miles

    5/2 - 22 miles
    5/5 - 22 miles

"What are all of you using to keep track of your distance and to plan your rides? "

For my more sporty rides and also navigation in places I don't know a Garmin Edge cycle computer which feeds into Garmin Connect and on to Strava.
For indoors Wattbike linked to Wattbike Hub which also feeds into Strava.
For local leisure riding just Strava app on my phone.
(Strava is where the totality of my rides ends up.)

Where I get my rides from is very varied. A lot just from exploring, seeing where people go, some from Audax events or defined Audax routes, some copied from rides/routes organised by bike shops, bike event promotors and charity bike routes, some copied from people I follow on Strava or know in real life. I've also used Ride With GPS and GPSies (which I think is now joined with AllTrails ???).

I resisted paying for Strava until they made segment leaderboard tracking a paid item and as I find chasing PR's and leaderboard progression both motivating and fun I did take up a subscription. For me 5$ /month when I'm probably going to do 40 hours this month is OK as it's my main hobby and the extra features are interesting to me.

I use an app simply titled Bike Routes. It opens with where you are as center of the map, and you drop pins along a route you are thinking about taking. The distance that it tells you the route will be seems very accurate. It also shows elevations and how much you will be climbing. It’s decent for free, that’s for sure.

    Strava to track my distances.
Ride with GPS to plan my routes ... or I just go without a plan. :)

    Thanks for all the replies!
I have a TomTom GPS watch that lets me measure the distance, but it doesn't allow for any route planning. If I go without a plan, I end up on horrible mud or gravel trails where I have to carry my bike instead of riding it :D
I thought about looking for a local group to join, but the only one I found is currently not doing any rides (Corona). And even if they were, I don't think I'm fast enough - they have two training dates usually, but one is for people doing an average speed of at least 30km/h, the other has a minimum average speed of 25km/h. My average speed is a lot slower than that! Something to train, I guess  Then maybe I would also be tempted to chase Strava segment PRs.

For now I planned a 25km ride with komoot for tomorrow evening. I'll check out Bike Routes and Ride with GPS too.
