Face mask or no face mask?

I find that it odd that most of the people (not all) who argue against wearing a mask will cite the fact that it does little-to-nothing to protect you from getting COVID-19. This argument makes no sense to me when literally no one is recommending cloth masks to protect the wearer. So frustrating.19

For those areas mandating wearing masks now, how does it get enforced? I'm just curious because our state will start mandating masks 8/1 and I'm so glad! But my thought is, who's going to listen then if they're not bothering now and who's going to enforce the issue?0

That's a good question. I'm in a state where masks are mandated. However, whether the public enters a business with or without a mask is left up to individual businesses -- which puts the employees at risk of verbal abuse or violence when they try to enforce wearing a mask.
Businesses also don't want to completely antagonize the non-mask-wearers or they can't survive financially. Some businesses are more lenient than others. I believe it comes down to the state government. In my state, wearing a mask is a mandate, but the state will not enforce it.

The risk of contracting COVID and spreading it to my kids and elderly father with emphysema outweighs the "discomfort" of the mask. I read that mask use can reduce the wearer's risk of contracting COVID by 30% (can't provide source, but I'm sure that can be googled searched). 30% is better than 0%...and wearing a mask is a super easy behavior.
Plus, I order a KISS mask, so I have a cool mask.
Your gym sounds very interesting....

I went to the grocery store. Masks are mandatory but about half were not wearing one. The manager is not equipped to enforce it and he was working his head off stocking shelves. Most of them were lone locals and entire families of tourists....5-6 of them in a group. It was business as usual.
Many of the clerks were wearing them below their nose and I thought about Gisel's good info.

Lots of people here seem convinced that face coverings will protect them from covid19 - why? I have no idea as it really won't. Where does this delusion come from????
CNN have an interesting piece on this today too.
I don't wear a mask to protect MYSELF. I wear one because I wouldn't want to be responsible for transmitting COVID-19 to someone else and there appears to be evidence that a mask will help in preventing people (especially asymptomatic people) from transmitting it to others. If others want to take a bare minimum step to prevent possibly transmitting it to me, hey, I'd appreciate that too!16 -
if i'm out, i wear one. it's easy plus it's fashionable imo, i coordinate my masks with my outfits like ties. my city where i live mandates it, but the town i work in doesn't, and it's bonkers to me that i hear people at work talk about how afraid they are of catching it (they're mostly middle-aged to elderly men), yet they can't be bothered to take basic precautions for each other and mask up. even after our boss tested positive and ended up in the hospital, there are still only about four people who wear one. they all still think they're the main character here and can't possibly get sick. the town's voting on a mask ordinance this week, so hopefully that'll change soon.5

The police have the ability to fine you $200. However, they will most likely ask you if you have a mask and if you don't they will offer to give you one. If you still refuse you get the fine.

$200???? wow it's like they actually want there to be consequences for bad behavior. my city's fine is a whopping $9.2 -
The scientific evidence points to the fact that wearing masks may reduce COVID spread in areas where 1.5m distancing cannot be maintained however it does not account for people:
1) Going out with cold symptoms wearing a mask because they think this makes them "safe"
2) Failing to maintain 1.5m distancing because they think they don't need to as they are wearing a mask
3) Washing their hands less and touching their face more
4) Travelling during "busy" times on public transport as they think that because everyone is wearing a face covering it is ok
5) Having poor mask hygiene (masks need to be changed/washed on a regular basis, its not something that should just be shoved in a pocket, when your doing this you are touching the mask with your potentially contaminated hands, then you put the mask back on your face!)
Whilst the research supports that wearing a mask reduces droplet transmission if you cough sneeze, if an individual is coughing and sneezing they should be at home. Mask wearing one tool in an arsenal of fighting COVID, it should be employed appropriately (i.e when distance cannot be maintained). Don't (like so many others i've seen around and about) let wearing a mask make you feel you can ignore the basic tenet of distancing.9 -

Please, post the link if you are going to refer to an article in a newspaper or magazine.
It's not surprising that one layer is better than no layers. It goes to show that wearing any mask has an impact on moisture spray.
It also highlights why social distancing is still important, mask or no mask.11 -

This is good, you're right it is the whole package. The most effective prevention method is layering of ALL THE THINGS TOGETHER.

I am an "essential" worker. I wear one almost 8 hours a day without many breaks. It is not enjoyable, especially if it is hot but it is doable and I do it for myself and others. It may not be 100% effective but it does help and even if it is a small percentage, that is worth the inconvenience. IMHO12

it was probably the most they could get anyone to agree on. a slap on the wrist that the karens can just walk off. plenty of people out here still think it's all a hoax to undermine the president or force them to be microchipped or insert your choice of conspiracy theory, and they're quick to get violent about it. months ago other cities were having to rescind mask ordinances put up as precautions to prevent our current rate of spread because people were out open-carrying and threatening store employees. now that our rate is pretty steadily over a thousand cases a day the reasonable people are starting to outnumber the goons, but i'm sure it's still on our reps' minds.1 -
Masks have been required in PA for months. However, the rule is not really enforced. When the state loosened up restrictions generally, a lot of stores decided the mask rule no longer applied (if it ever did) and stopped requiring masks. With the recent increase in cases, and constant reiteration by the Governor and Sec. of Health that masks are still required, most stores went back to asking customers to wear masks using signs at the door and within the store, plus people at the door who check incoming customers. The small grocery nearest to our house does not ask customers to wear masks, so a lot of people don't. I don't like to go there as a result. The grocery I usually go to, Giant, was handing out masks to people who didn't have them. Compliance was high. Walmart had people at the door telling people to wear masks, but did nothing when some people refused. Some people wore masks into the store, but took them off once past the door. Many who wore masks in the store took them off the second they left, despite the fact that they were passing very close to a line of people waiting to get in. Since I have a vulnerable spouse, I found it very irritating.3

It can happen to the young and healthy too. Don't fool yourself. Wear a mask or stay home. Who knows how many people she probably infected before she went to the hospital.

It is actually $9 and they offer you a mask and ask you to put it on or leave. Second offense=same, third offense, the fine is $200, so there actually could be consequences, but yes, it’s more of a request to wear one first.

ah i thought i might have heard it eventually escalates, thanks. guess that does leave room for the people who genuinely do forget one to have a couple strikes, but by the third time plus you're definitely clowning.0 -
I'd rather wear this
than cause someone else to have to wear this

Today, I had to go to the county building with some paperwork. Five staff members have the 'Rona after attending a meeting at a local eating joint. There was some plexiglass up but sigh, the locals weren't wearing any masks behind the glass and coming in the door. I'm helping the older ones get all of their affairs in order and it is breaking my heart.6

Only wear one b/c I’ve been assaulted multiple times by other customers when trying to pick up my seizure meds and groceries. Was specifically told by my neuro NOT to wear them (even carry a medical note with me) b/c they cause me to overheat & seize, & pose a suffocation risk if i have a grand mal. Apparently covid looks the other way if you’re attacking someone for having a preexisting condition.7

I am worried about my civil rights so for that reason I WEAR A MASK. If I don't and the virus continues to spread unchecked then I might lose a freedom I actually care about.
I never waited for it to be mandated. I have worn one most of the time in public since near the beginning. I say most because it took a little time to get in the habit so I missed a few times. Now my habit is solid. About 50 feet from a public entrance is my mental cue and I keep extra masks in my vehicle in case I don't have one on me.
I have done fairly aerobic charity work in the hot sun while wearing one. When I was physically in need of a break I distanced myself and took a break from the mask too. I think that is more of a mental need than a physical one though.

Can you explain what you mean by that?
If wearing a mask seriously interferes with a pre-existing condition, then by all means you should not wear one IF it's what your doctor says. IDK what kind of pre-existing condition that might be, seeing as I know people with COPD and emphysema who wear them all the time and only complain about the discomfort. I'm sure they exist, there are exceptions for every rule, and rules for every exception.

The same people who have assaulted me refuse to use sanitizer and broke distancing and even torn off their own mask to spit on me. Even gone out of their way (20+ feet down an aisle) to do so. Last time I was given a concussion and suffered a grand mal later that day as a result.

Amazingly polite employees and police officers, despite having to deal with an adult acting like a two-year-old (repeatedly asking the same questions over and over, and denying the validity of the answers). But I'm guessing the narrator's low subscribership issue isn't because people are repeatedly watching without subscribing. I'm thinking he just has really high turnover because most people can't stand to listen to him say "guys" one more time.2 -
I've been working at home since the start of the pandemic so I haven't worn a mask a lot, but when outside of the house I always have it with me. I don't wear it outside when it's just me or just me an my family, but in stores, public spaces, areas with people gathering, etc. for sure.
The way that I've looked at it from the beginning was wear it as it does little other than be a minor nuisance/inconvenience for what could help. With the naysayers (I have a lot in my family) I tell them I'd rather wear it and be wrong and have hurt no-one, than to not wear it and cause someone to become deathly ill/die.
I'm not perfect because it hasn't become habit with as little as I get out but I have it with me and sometimes its just a matter of seeing someone else to remember.4 -

Kind of. If one has a condition that makes wearing a mask difficult, the store should provide reasonable accommodations to allow purchase with the person not having to enter the store, such as curbside pick up or delivery. Things like the ADA require reasonable accommodations, but putting other people at risk of pandemic infection is not a reasonable accommodation.
The whole situation should have been handled in a rather different way.9
