Treadmill speedwork today, the plan called for 4x1600 at HM race pace. It's an odd pace for me - not my typical speedwork fast, but not slow either. The workout was much harder mentally than it was physically.
Here's how the plan currently looks, with last week's workouts all checked off.
Also I went back to the first of my daycare/preschool music classes today - after 5 months! It was good to see the children. They remembered me, but not my name 😄
August goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)
I may or may not make goal, depends on what days I do my long runs.

@kgirlhart – hugs for an emotional weekend. Hope your dad is doing better.
@katharominc – congrats on the 250 day run streak! Nice!
@avidkeo - glad you are being patient and letting your calf completely heal. I know it has to be hard.
I went out around 6:15 this morning and it was super muggy. I tweaked my lower back one day last week and even though I took a complete rest day yesterday, it was still achy this morning. One of my neighbor’s sons was outside doing his chores as I passed by and he was in a talkative mood. He looks to be about 9yo and his family moved here from Texas last Fall. He was telling me all about their chickens, tapping trees for maple sap and the process to make it into syrup, homeschooling, the drought in Texas – I finally discreetly paused my Garmin after I realized I would be there for a while. I didn’t mind though. He was a nice kid and it delayed me climbing a huge hill back to my house.

My not so exciting race report from Saturday.Yay a real race with people. We have been lucky that for some reason one race director has been able to have in person trail races in our state park. The rules are very strict. We go in waves of 25 people every 5 minutes, you cannot get out of your car unless you are warming up (off course) before the race, you cannot stay after the race, get your water your medal and get out, you have to wear a mask until the start, the aid stations have bottled water and Gatorade and no food, same with the finish. This is the 3 year for this series, I have done it every year, there are 4 races starting in June and ending this past weekend. Each race day has 2 distances, 5K/5 mile, 4 mile/10K, 5 mile/10 mile and 10K/HM. It’s nice because it really opens it up to a lot of different runners. Year one I did the short, year 2 I did the long (except not the HM) and this year the short again. I thought I was going to die during the 10 miler last year, then I preran the HM course and was sure they were going to have to helicopter me out ha ha…no really I did. So I dropped to the 10K the last race of the long series. Everyone who does the HM says it’s the hardest course they have ever done, the last mile is called death climb. Skip did it, she was so proud she laid on the ground crying afterwards last year. Anyway..enough background.
The weather was actually awesome, the downfall to staggered starting is they start the long course runners starting at 7:00 and the then short distance after so you could be starting at 8:30 in the Alabama heat. It is definitely cooler on the mountain but it’s hot. I run this mountain all the time and honestly I know I’m not going to win as long as Elaine is in my age group ha ha so I have fun with it. I push myself to what makes me happy, knowing the climbs that will coming my way trying to kill me. The 5K and 10K actually have the smaller climbs with a 400ft drop then 1 mile trail up and down nice easy feeling and a 400ft climb in about ¼ mile. This 10K is one of my favorites and I actually run the course quite a bit when I’m out there.
This is the first race I’ve been passed quite a bit, lots of folks noticing we are running in person and suddenly signing up and waves are set when you sign up so not by any pace. But I’m okay with that, just let me know you’re coming and I’ll move. I spent 90% of the race by myself and I’m good with that, the nice thing about knowing the course is you just go along on auto pilot no need to watch for course markers. I was happy with my 1:34 time, it was faster than my 5 miler the race before which was good. I passed people who didn’t know about the climb and it beat them up part way up and I passed them. I felt good the entire race, finished with a time I was happy with (not as fast as in the past but that’s okay), I really hate racing without Skip but my one friend and I have been in the same wave so it gives us a chance to say hello. The medals are handmade and the guy only makes enough for the race. If you sign up for the whole series you get a plaque that displays them. I signed up one race at a time so he’s going to see if I can buy one from the guy. Here’s the medal. He’s also been approved to do 2 races 1 in September called Conquer the Cave which is a 5K that starts in the road and ends up in the Caverns near us, it’s so cool literally the temp drops like 20 degrees in the cave. He’ll also do that as a trail run in November with us running the trails around the Cavern and ending inside again.

@mbaker566 What you do for the dogs is awesome! I would hate to see them put down too. I wish people would spay and neuter better. It's awful around here. People with male dogs seem to be the worst and still think it is up to the owners of females to take care of the problem. Glad you got to do the race. Speed Demon looks like she really enjoyed both runs. Love the pictures. It looks like a nice place for a run.
@kgirlhart Glad your dad is doing better. If they don't move him, maybe one of the nurses can set up a face time with the family since it's his birthday.
@Teresa502 Love the little boy story. I'm sure he will remember your kindness in listening to him.
@polskagirl01 Hahaha about the kids not remembering your name. That happens to me sometimes if I haven't been in a daycare class for a while. But, then, I'm horrible with names and sometimes have to be reminded of the kids names too. What kind of music classes do you do with them?
@skippygirlsmom Great race report. Sounds like you had a great run. I've thought about doing one of the runs that goes through a cave. Not sure if it is the one you are talking about or not. I think the one I saw was in Northern AL2 -
I took my dad to the VA this morning for a couple of appointments. I had planned to play tennis at 4pm, but that got cancelled. So, I'm just going to take today as a rest day. I'll try to get a run in tomorrow morning.2

@skippygirlsmom - Thanks for the race report! Sounds like you managed the course and the hill quiet well!1

@skippygirlsmom How is the cavern race going to work with no air circulation? It sounds like the coolest race ever but also potentially dangerous as far as Covid, since it’s essentially running indoors with a bunch of other people and completely still air. Or have they thought about this and figured something out?0
-
Still running he ERace Racism challenge, still haven’t gotten my log in info for the new distance even though I got a confirmation mail for the transfer. So... I’m virtually somewhere between Washington and Richmond, but I have no idea where! I wrote race roster support and gave them a little poke but haven’t heard back.
4.5 miles running trails, and a long walk. Nice day but hot and sunny. The creekbed which was a rushing waterfall two weeks ago is dry packed earth now. We saw a blue heron, a bunny, and a pair of red tail hawks. And a camouflage spider which has evolved to look exactly like a bird poo. Tried to take a photo but the camera kept focusing on the tree behind the web. Only passed by two cyclists and both were extremely courteous!6 -
Looks like a nice place to run @rheddmobile . And, yes, you are a little bit sweaty. The spider sounds interesting. Too bad you couldn't get a picture.0
-
@rheddmobile the cavern is HUGE inside here's a few pictures to give you can idea, the air inside definitely isn't still. I would feel as safe running inside here as I do outside. This has gone in waves in the past to limit the number of people in the cave at any time, the waves are limited to 100 and by the time you run almost 1.5 miles people are pretty spread out.7
-
Morning all. Wind and rain and wet leaves this morning - pretty autumnal, which makes me sad. I know some of you have been battling insane heat but I don’t feel ready to say goodbye to running in the sunshine just yet!
Have gone past my target with still three runs to go. Might stretch myself to a 100m target... little one hurt her ankle so yesterday’s couch to 5k was scrapped. Hoping she’ll be ok by tomorrow. So those will add a couple more miles to my tally!
Happy running everyone x

What kind of music classes do you do with them? It's a bit different with the new precautions, but I think doable as long as things don't get shut down completely. I'll have to wear a face shield at one location, there's a line on the floor between us at the others that the children can't cross (they don't know it's because of the virus, they think it's separating the stage from the audience like at a concert), and everything the kids touch goes in a separate bag and is later disinfected before it goes back with my other materials. I use the hand sanitizer or wash my hands between groups. Masks are required in the areas where parents go (coat/shoe room, hallways). I'm trying to think of a fun way to explain the face shield to the 2-3 year olds, as their all-day teachers don't have to wear them, and it could look scary to a little kid. Maybe a big funny bow or a musical note on top and call it my new music hat. Crazy times.3

I thought we were doing our usual Tuesday sprints at the track this morning, but I was the only one there, so I guess not. I just ran laps and was happy enough that the thunderstorm had passed and I got my run done pretty early in the day.
@skippygirlsmom congrats on your race. The cavern race sounds really cool (pun intended I guess)! I would love that.
Good job everyone! Will try to catch up tonight if I can.

Clear and 70 F this morning with no wind. Got out before the sun got too far above the horizon. Thought some interesting thoughts, but can't remember any of them now.
The website says they're going to try to do the Race for the Parks in Hudson as a real race. I'm afraid I won't have the courage to expose myself like that, so I think I'm going to skip it.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

My back is still achy so I took it easy this morning. Only saw one person while out and that was the driver of the big yellow school bus that passed me. In my county, school is in session for headstart through 3rd grade. The rest of the kiddos are learning from home.
Sun coming up over the horizon.
@Faebert – I’m never ready to say goodbye to the Summer sunshine! Hope little one heals quickly.
@Polskagirl01 – I like your idea of dressing up the face shield with a big bow!
@tramboman – ha ha on the sleazy run!

Shoot. Had a post all written out and hit the wrong button and it disappeared. I hate it when that happens!
@skippygirlsmom Now that I see the pictures, I'm really going to have to look into that race. I'm more afraid to stay in a hotel than I am to race, I think. I could probably make the drive in the morning and then drive back home that day. I'll have to see.
@polskagirl01 Sounds like you have wonderful classes and I'll be the kids love it.I love the idea of putting a musical note on your face shield and calling it your magic music hat. At the daycare where I sub the teachers are required to wear a face mask all day. I was afraid the kids would be afraid or not know who we were, but they all just go with the flow, even the babies don't seem to mind. I feel bad for them though, mostly because I think it is important for them to see our facial expressions so they can learn those non-verbal clues that are so important later on in life. The older kids understand that we are doing this because of the virus. I just hope it all goes away soon and we can get back to "normal."
@Teresa502 Hope your back feel better. Love the sunrise picture.
