August 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

I have snoozed almost every one I know in real life on Facebook.
In the first 3 days of the month I've cycled 42 km and ran just once, hill training today for 4.3 km. It's crazy because I kinda feel wiped out like I did a long run but NOPE not at all. I just ran up the hill 4 times at 5k pace and then jogged home. But the long bike ride yesterday afternoon was nice, there were SO many people on the bike path but in a way it was almost like being in a race with the atmosphere of doing something active with other people. I miss that.2 -
Welcome newcomers and returners. I'm in lurk mode atm, liking and hugging but not feeling chatty.
A monthly question.
This year has been challenging mentally, emotionally and physically (for some of us). How are you coping? What do you do to get back on track? What challenges do you face and how are you managing them? (hint: if you are not it's time to do so).
or
Remember when you were 10-13 ish? What were your favorite after school shows, snacks, activities, favorite memories and friends or pets?
Hmm. Not at all sure I'm coping at the moment. I was fine at first, when they put us in lockdown. I work from home anyway, and it was a relief in many ways. My treadmill and my stubborn bloody-mindedness kept me moving. Daily yoga seems to help me a lot too.
However... restrictions eased, places opened, tourists started arriving, and cases are on the up again. And suddenly I'm not coping at all well. My husband just doesn't understand why I'm afraid of this stupid virus, which has taken so many lives and made so many people sick. That's causing rows... he wants to go places I really don't want to, and do things I really don't want to. On top of all that, we've been re-decorating and having some work done at home, which has caused 10 days of utter chaos and meant my yoga space was filled with junk. Meltdown ensued. Thank God I can still run, and I have now found my mat again.
We moved to Spain when I was 10. I remember a summer of sitting in the complex swimming pool because it was so damn hot for a British kid. Then I remember an autumn of sunshine and skateboarding around the neighbourhood with the other kids. Good times. We didn't even own a TV. School sucked a bit, I was the typical nerd who was picked on for working. We had 3 cats we brought with us: Serendipity, Emerald and Cindy. Cindy looked like a miniature lion and she liked to attack dogs. She cornered a neighbour's dachsund once and roughed him up bad. There was a pack of semi-wild dogs that lived in the hills and would kill cats. The locals all started hero-worshipping Cindy the day they saw one of those dogs running down the road screaming with Cindy on its back tearing strips out of it.
Sorry, very random.
I managed 100 miles last month by jogging to the bins and back at the last moment. First time ever, and probably won't happen again for a good while. Hal is a hard master, and it's hot and I need a rest so definitely a cutback month. Having said that, he said 5km on Saturday and I did 8 because 5 just felt wrong on long run day. Today's 5km were plenty though. It reached 43.5ºC here yesterday (110.3 f according to Google). I'm so over summer already.

@eleanorhawkins Sorry about your anxiety at the moment. Hopefully things will calm down and get a little bit more back to normal. Love the story of Cindy the cat!polskagirl01 wrote: »I have snoozed almost every one I know in real life on Facebook.

@quilteryoyo thanks. Cindy was awesome. We never knew where she came from, she just turned up on the doorstep one day all matted ginger hair and skin and bones and refused to leave. After we let her in she slept with her eyes open for about 3 weeks.

I opted for a treadmill run today, as it was raining this morning. It was a nice, gentle rain, so would have probably been pleasant enough. I just wasn't in the mood to get wet. I don't think I was in the mood to run at all, because the run was mentally hard today. I really wanted to quit before I ran my planned distance, but forced myself to finish. Ran 4.25 miles at an average 11:37 min/mile and also walked a mile.
I have a question about the ticker. Yesterday, I was able to post two separate ones. But, when I went back today, it only saved one of them and now I can't figure out how to make it post two today. I thought I had, but in the preview, they were the same. I guess my question is, how can I have two separate tickers that keep track of the previous days total? (Hope that makes sense to someone. It sounds kind of garbled to me. LOL)
1 -
hugs @eleanorhawkins. We got you.
@quilteryoyo I probably should have gone out to run today too...but Isais is coming and forecast was rain, so I decided on treadmill. Of course the rain hasn't arrived yet....so I could have gone - oh well. Did another 2 peloton runs for total of 80 min. Might be doing me some good as all of them have hill work!
No idea on the tickers sorry.
When I was 10 I was in Canada - so probably was watching Happy Days, Love Boat, etc..After school would sometimes head to the convenience store and get a coke Slurpee and ketchup chips. That was awesome.
11-13 I was in the Congo in Africa, and not much you could do after school, but go home and do homework and watch VCR movies. Phone service was terrible at the time there, and didn't really see friends or do anything much. Unless we went to a friends house after school.
Coping by running, spinning, netflixing. And the occasional meet up with a couple friends for a walk or coffee at an outside place with appropriate measures.
Oh and that beach trip we took for a few days was magic.

I'm just trying to be consistent. I started following Sydney Cummings on YouTube in May, and continued on with her Summertime Fine 2.0 program, which runs through August. I'm trying to focus on getting fruits and vegetables every day. If my weight gets close to my top limit for maintenance, sometimes I log a few days. If I feel extra tired, I take a nap or go to bed early. I will go back to work this week, so staying calm, planning ahead, and keeping to a bedtime/schedule will be helpful. I'm glad I didn't get into the habit of staying up late all summer. Having dogs with needs in the morning helps.

When I was 10-13, I was competing in gymnastics. So, workouts pretty much every day after school, Saturdays, or competition on weekends. I don't remember what shows I watched at that age. I probably didn't watch much TV. I had a few friends at school and some at the gym. One friend I met in 4th grade and we stayed good friends through high school and did dance team together.
I went to the park today and pushed through my slow, sweaty 5 miles. I walked an extra half loop to cool down and then stretched.3 -
@hamsterwheel6 Nice job topping that leaderboard. What are "ketchup chips"?
@rheddmobile I have passed a couple of people riding horses when I was running, but so far I've never seen any at the McDonald's drive thru.
@katharmonic Wow! That hike looks awesome and sounds brutal! You really are a beast. I love the pictures and especially the one of you looking out over the view.
@Elise4270 I went on Facebook to keep up with my kids. I really only want to see posts of kittens and puppies and who had a birthday or got married or had a new grand baby. I'm tired of all the politics and the negativity on there.
@quilteryoyo A lovely gentle rain sounds nice. I've wondered about how to do two tickers as well. I was going to try to do one for the monthly challenge and one to keep up with the Run the Year, but I couldn't figure out how to save two separate tickers.
@Tramboman Since we both took rest days today we'll have to wait until tomorrow to get our 1600 mile bib. We just need 1.07 miles.

Got out earlier this morning and was almost home before the sun came up. It was nice to beat the heat and it is supposed to get to 103 degrees today.

You can get up extra early and bask in the glory; you've done most of the hard work.
I'm just glad I'm over my little injury and can continue to contribute.1 -
2 days in a row!4 -
@kgirlhart Ketchup flavored potato chips. It’s a Canadian flavor not made in the states. Though I imagine some of the northern states might have them. Not sure why they don’t make it here, I love them and usually bring back some after I visit up there. Although maybe it’s a good thing!1

Thanks all! @quilteryoyo there are few venomous snakes in NY state. Timber rattlesnakes are possible but I've not heard of many being sighted in the high peaks. Bear encounters seem to be the bigger concern. It really seems to vary but one mountain we saw a bunch of harmless garter snakes and the last few nothing.
Mmm, ketchup chips are good. You can get them here sometimes.

This morning was another internal "no" response to the possibility of getting up to go running. I had to pick up Stella from boarding pretty early and then decided it wasn't happening. I texted my friend and we met up at 5:15 after work and ran on the track while her daughter did a small group lacrosse practice. Or field hockey. One of those. It was way too hot on the track with little shade so we went out to the road and parking areas to run the shady parts until we finished our 5k.
Feeling about 80% recovered. I'm going to try foam rolling again tonight. Stella stole my tennis ball but hopefully I can track that down and roll my feet as well.

@Tramboman I do try to get out the door between 5:45-6:00. I think we are both pulling our weight and hope your injuries are behind you.
@hamsterwheel6 I have never seen ketchup flavored potato chips. They kind of sound gross to me. But I'm not a big ketchup person.1 -

A lot do feel the same way you do...but in Canada you kind of grow up with them, and Canadians apparently love ketchup! Lol1 -
I have a goal to jog (ok, fast walk, lol) 40 miles this month. Just getting back into walking and jogging. A long time ago, I was able to jog 2 miles non-stop, which for me was amazing. Now, I can barely jog 1/4 of a mile. But, little steps equal big results, right!!!!
Happy Monday everyone!

It stormed this evening, and I’ve had a bit of a headache, so I just went out briefly after the rain for 1.5 miles. It had cooled off about 15 degrees, so it felt pretty nice.4

No run for me today - scheduled rest day. Actually, it's an extra rest day as I've been running five days a week since March with no events to taper for so no breaks. My body has finally hit maximum fatigue, so my coach has scheduled a day of nothing (usually do yoga or pilates at least). I also have a trail event on Sunday that I need fresh legs for - 22.5km and nearly 500 metres of elevation!
Instead of exercise, I'm working! I did want to head to the pool as I find kicking really relaxes my feet and lower legs, but my youngest daughter is selling dog-shaped biscuits on Friday to raise money for the Blind Foundation to train guide dogs, but as she's only six, the baking of said biscuits falls to me.
This means my week's work is crammed into today and tomorrow, with Thursday given over to baking and decorating about 300 biscuits! She's the face of the exercise (and a cute face too) and in charge of sprinkles and quality control, or so she tells me.8 -
As I have been posting my workouts against what my coach has asked me to do, the question has come up, “Why do you not do what she says?” Since I started doing this to pull back the veil a bit and show people what more structured training looks like, I feel I should address this.
The truth is, when I can follow the plan, I do.
I have several undisclosed medical issues that limit me, and I work multiple jobs. So sometimes I straight up cannot do what is planned despite my best efforts. One of the qualities I looked for in a coach was one that would not flip out when I deviated from the plan. At least one runner in our group has lost their coach for doing just that. I also remind you of a certain runner’s relationship with Hal. That would not work for me. So I found a coach that would be understanding.
I also run for reasons that have nothing to do with races, BQing, or anything of the like. I keep those reasons close to home for the most part, but the obvious one is I like to eat.
Also, keep in mind, I have been running as an adult longer than My Fitness Pal, Strava, Run Keeper, and the rest have been in business. I am in this for the long haul, and that often means pushing out goals, or reducing them, in the face of reality.
But I am not deviating as much as it may look to those that are newer to coach created plans. For example, let’s look at my last week. I had the following runs:
Monday: 10 miles
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: 10 Miles
Thursday: Threshold Run
Friday: Rest Day
Saturday: 15 miles
Sunday: 6 miles
In any running plan, there are what we refer to as “quality runs.” Those are the ones that are key for making forward progress. The rest of the runs are base building, keeping what you have, or the like. It is not that they are not quality, it is just that they are not where the focus is.
In the week above Thursday (speed) and Saturday (stamina) were the two key runs. If you look back over what I actually did:
Monday: 13 miles
Tuesday: 8 miles
Wednesday: 10 miles
Thursday: Threshold Run
Friday: 14 miles
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 8 miles
You should be able to see that I did the two key runs. I had to cut the 15 mile run to 14 because of time, but I did that on Friday because I knew after donating blood (which I did on Friday) I would not be able to safely run 15 miles on Saturday. I did the threshold run as scheduled.
As for the rest of the days, those are “easy runs” – that is runs at a conversational pace. They are much looser. I do not like running less than 10 miles unless I have a reason, and my coach knows that. These numbers she gives are more of “at least 8 miles,” with the understanding I will do more most of the time. The purpose behind those runs is more about time on feet than anything else.
The only real deviation from the plan last week was I did not take the extra rest day on Tuesday. That simply was because I never know what days I will get to run the rest of the week, so I skip rest days early in the week to burn later in the week if something comes up.
So, I hope this helps someone. It should at least answer the question I got about this.

No running yet. Spent the weekend in Shanghai with friends and it felt far too hot to run (locals were running regardless and they have my eternal awe and wonder). Then lifting kicked my *kitten* on Monday and I'm still working on getting my arms over my head. We'll see about tomorrow.
This year has been challenging mentally, emotionally and physically (for some of us). How are you coping? What do you do to get back on track? What challenges do you face and how are you managing them? (hint: if you are not it's time to do so).
Coping: running, lifting, going out and hanging with actual humans. It helps that I've been going out of town every weekend, one doesn't have time to be too depressed when there are flights to catch and trips to coordinate.
Challenges: lockdown and life changes earlier this year triggered some weird mood swings that disguised themselves as philosophical questions. Recently I think I'm done with the philosophical questions.. we'll see if the emotions go away too.
Remember when you were 10-13 ish? What were your favorite after school shows, snacks, activities, favorite memories and friends or pets?
I was in Florida when I was 10. Our TV was nearly eternally fixed to the Discovery Channel so I know much more than I should about lions and sealife. I'd spend my time hanging out near the pool or wandering around the block, there were alligators in the swamp behind the school and we'd catch sight of them sometimes.hamsterwheel6 wrote: »@kgirlhart Ketchup flavored potato chips. We get those in China too! I don't understand why ketchup is fine with fries but not acceptable with chips. Aren't they basically the same thing?7 -
@BEASTFIELD314 You can do it. And, you are right, small steps lead to big things. Just so you know, in this forum, you are only a jogger if you find a dead body along your route. Otherwise, you are a runner.
@marisap2010 Hope your headache is better. I'm impressed that you went out for a run while it was hurting.3 -

Back to business today with workouts. It was lightly raining when we started out it felt a little chilly, which was a nice change from the heat but a little unpleasant. We ran 1 mile for a warmup with nose breathing practice first. We were debating whether to substitute hills for the planned sprints and core circuit, due to the wet track conditions. Somehow this idea became doing ALL of it today. We did our typical sprint workout, and the track was ok. Then we did a core circuit on the very wet turf (3 rounds: bicycles, mountain climbers, planks, russian twists, crunches, and V-ups). Then we headed over to the hill. It was raining a bit harder now and of course we were already soaking wet. The plan was 45 minutes of repeats but I called it good at about 30 because I had to get ready for meeting. It was kind of a mean trick to do two days worth of workouts in one so I didn't feel too bad about cutting it short.
The rain is coming down pretty heavy now. Looks like it will last most of the day from tropical storm Isaias.
