HAPPY BIRTHDAY @quilteryoyo !!!!! I SO want to hug you and celebrate you and make you a cake and fill your house with balloons!
(I get super duper, ridiculously excited about birthdays)
61! I hope you are proud of yourself. You do so much, for so many. I hope you can make time today to do things for YOU.
@Elise4270 I'm glad you were able to get help with your son's phone. I still have my mom's house phone (landline) saved in my phone and if/when her husband calls, it comes up as Mom. It is both painfully horrifying and comforting. Sometimes, like this last weekend, when I am running, I think of her and I stop and feel like I could scream until my insides burst. I could scream and cry until I combust. Until there is nothing left. In some strange way, I would welcome it. I would prefer it. Then, I look ahead and see something beautiful and keep going and can't wait to tell my kids what I've seen and bring them back to show them. This is what grief is. It both swallows us and propels us. I cannot relate to losing a child. I'm just empathizing with the grief. I hope that you are comforted in even the smallest of ways just knowing - you are not alone.
@RunsOnEspresso that article is exactly what i am afraid of. For myself, my kids, my coworkers (why in the world are we even at work)...
Strength training last night - ordered nutrition supplies for the next challenge this morning. More GU gels because they're cheap and seem to be effective as well as tailwind for the run and I splurged on tailwind recovery mix. Has anyone tried that? I may have just wasted $20 but if it's amazing, then that'll be great. I struggle to eat after a long run. My mouth hurts, my body hurts, I'm not hungry... Was thinking that drinking the recovery would be easier.
Still need to go look at trail shoes. Running can be so expensive. I wouldn't do it but I got my salomons before I had even ever run five miles straight and ordered a size that does not work for distance. I am pretty sure that's how I got a black toenail - that, and overuse. I am hoping i can find some that are not MILLIONS OF DOLLARS and that feel great... and I really hope they just happen to be the nike wildhorse... because they look amazing and that's what Sally McRae wears (and yes, I do know that NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS ARE PRIORITY).
I digress..
I finished reading Gone Girl yesterday. I'm waiting on Ruth Ware's next book - it comes out in September. In the meantime, I got her 57 minute read on audible for $1.60. It's called Snowflakes. I'll letcha know.4 -
6 miles this morning. Felt a little better today. Thought about quitting after 5, but I was over a mile from home, and it was getting late, so ended up finishing with the last mile as my fastest mile of the year 😲

@quilteryoyo Hope you had a great birthday!!!1

I felt really great on my run this morning all the way up until that stupid hill at the end. There are not words for how much I hate that hill. My last mile is always a minute slower than all my other miles on that route.
I know how you feel, but keep in mind, that stupid hill is doing wonders for your strength and fitness. Of course you’re going to run it slower - it’s a stupid hill - it’s just unfortunate that it’s at the end of your route. Keep up the good work!
I agree with the analysis that the hill is making you stronger.
Ever think about reversing the route and running downhill at the beginning?0 -

DH said he didn't want a call or text from his number. I have used his phone to send myself photos. It is lovely, not painful. I will immensely enjoy the little "I love you's" I find in his phone to mine. There are night I just wish the most physically painful thing would happen to me, because it would pale in comparison to the emotional pain. Si I get the feeling of screaming to bursting. Thank you for your kind words.5 -
4.25 progression run this morning.
First 30 minutes eased into the pace zone and felt good. Last 10 minutes of the faster pace was hard. I barely hit goal pace because I had to stop & walk twice. I was just too warm (it was only 86° when I started at 5 am).
At lucnh I'll do my core work and maybe hop on the bike.
5.75/whatever my goal was. 77? 80? 90? I don't remember what I said haha3 -
Happy birthday @quilteryoyo! Truly inspirational x
@Elise4270 I think I would feel the same. There’s a comfort and a reassurance that comes with knowing that someone we have lost loved us and also felt loved by us. I hope that you have some peace and that you give yourself grace to just do whatever you need to do.
I enjoyed @mbaker566 story and was horrified by @RunsOnEspresso’s! I think I have been guilty of telling myself I’d probably be ok because I’m fit and healthy etc etc. But this is a very strange illness and i must remember that.
Just over 10k this morning. Kind of hot and uncomfortable as still have a bit of soreness lingering. But hopefully the next one will feel better.

@faebert All the unknowns with it are so scary. How it seems to affect everyone differently with no rhyme or reason. And the long term effects. We don't know if the damages to heart & lung will be short or long term. All we can do is try to keep ourselves safe. 🖤3

I mean obviously the hill helps with things but I’ve been running it all summer and I’m always going to hate it. I don’t think I need to like or look forward to it just because it provides benefits. Everyone has parts of training they don’t enjoy.0 -
8/3 - Estimated distance: 6.96 mi (11.22 km). Time: 93 min.
8/4 - Distance-3.44mi; Pace-11:44. Got to take out the new FitBit Charge 4 on today's run. This is my first fitness tracker and I'm...skeptical? It's nice to get more, and supposedly accurate data, but having to rely on another device is not something I am used to or want. I couldn't figure out how to stop the run, so actually, I think I saw the actual estimated pace to be 11:04, which makes me a lot more encouraged about my goal to get to a 10min/mile by the end of the month.

August Goal: 100 Miles
8/2: 10.52 miles
8/4: 6.40 miles
8/5: 6.52 miles
23.44/100 miles completed for August
839.45/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
My last two runs had really nice weather, but today it was back to August in Texas. I guess it could have been worse, but it definitely felt like a slog for most of the run. I did get 6.5 miles in though and as usual after the run I felt great and was glad I went. But like @Scott6255 I had a few times during the run that I thought about quitting, but I was too far away from home and I needed to get back. I didn't really get any faster though. I think I just got slower and slower as I went along. But still faster than walking. I guess looking back it wasn't a bad run. It was just hot and I felt slow. I did see a few other people out running today which is unusual. I sometimes see walkers, but rarely see runners. I think tomorrows weather will be about the same as today and since it is going to be over 100° for the next two weeks I'll just have to remind myself that it is cooler before work than it would be any other time of day. And I need to remember that I run slower when it is hot and try not to worry about my pace.
@elise4270 I'm glad you figured out the phone situation.
@quilteryoyo Happy belated birthday! Great job getting your 6.1 mile run in. And kudos to you for telling the daycare you would come in at 10 instead of earlier. You do so much for others, you need to make sure that you remember to take time for yourself.

@quilteryoyo Happy Happy Belated Birthday! And yes! for getting the run in!!
@Elise4270 Ditto on the phone issue. Like @Camaramandy648 I have my dad's cell phone listed as Mom on my phone because she was usually the one who would call me, even from his phone. She has been gone 10 years now, and I too have moments like @Camaramandy648 wrote about. You are not alone.
8.25 Miles today. Yesterday was spin. Because I'm running every other day, now, I feel like I can go longer on the days I do run, and the cycling must be helping.

@hamsterwheel6 I've been doing two miles of cycling on my off-running days, which during the week, are very short running anyway. So short that they barely count (haha). I think it is helping me too! Working differrent muscles maybe?

Anyone ever done a duathalon? I got a race company email today and they are doing their triathlon and duathalon virtually this year.
It sounds fun and I checked and can use my indoor bike. I figured it would probably take me 2 hours to complete.
It's a:
1 mile run
12 mile bike
5k run6 -
@Camaramandy648 Thank you so much. That really made my day. I could just picture my house full of colorful balloons and it made me smile.
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. It was a good day - run in the morning, work 4 hours with 1 year olds (so got some non social distancing hugs), took the dog for a walk, cooked and ate spaghetti with turkey meatballs, then went to my neighbor's house for a visit and pick up a cheesecake he had made for me. I couldn't eat any until today, as they need to sit overnight. It's really good and oh so many calories. But, birthday cake calories don't count. Right?9 -

5k run
I did one a few years back (July 22, 2018). It was 3K, 22K, 3K. Total time 1:40:12. It was 6 months after IT band/bursitis surgery and I wasn't 100%. Times were 19:21, 56:21, 21:55 respectively. Being my first, I was not efficient in the transition and didn't really worry about it. I did train, alternating runs and cycling and did 2 mock trials. I'd do it again.
ETA subtracted 12 minutes I forgot to stop my watch. And here's the actual recap.@Teresa502 race recap of my first Duathlon
The drive up
I was forced into listening to the end of an audio book on the 1.5 hour drive to OKC by Carl G. Jung. As if I'm not neurotic enough, and i already understand human behaviour, and need not further complex insight on the shortcomings of the human psyche. But I was slightly entertained when I shared some of these shortcomings and behaviours, enough to chuckle.
I only wish it had been in German. Hahaha! (Because I know about a 100 words in German, and the time could have been better spent training my ear.)
Packet pick up
Walk in bicycle shoppe and ask Eric (dh, oh he gets an upgrade from nameless dh here), "did you get your helmet?" See, I had just turned the water off in a shower when he said "I'm ready, I'll be in the truck". I literally was standing soaking wet, naked, in the shower. With this, i didn't have the thought to go through the "did dh remember " list. His answer, "oh *kitten*. i forgot my helmet". Bike store has helmets. These, unfortunately were for the wealthy elite cyclist at 289 USD. BikeOne (shameless plug. Love these guys) in OKC had them a bit less. And Eric claimed he didn't really like the helmet he owns. So yes definitely pick something you like. Bontager 120USD.
Checked into hotel. Eric's bank card had had been compromised the week before. So its had been canceled. It was also the one he use to book the room. Wish I had gone into check in with him. Apparently the employee at the front desk had to call to have it verified that payment was made and got into an argument with the lady on the other end who hung up on him. And i thought i was the only one with workplace drama.
Lunch-uneventful at panera bread. Drove the race course. Went to mass. I do have a blasphemous complaint about mass. Their jesus looked like a desperate house wife.
Met @seanevan10 and the family for Mexican food. We owe them dinner now. (We owe everyone dinner).
race morning
Up in plenty of time to make setting up the transition, and absent pre race meeting. Park away from the crowd for easy exit and I ask Eric "did you get your shoes?" The reply? Well it's all a string of kittens here. Back to the hotel.
The actual race.
Run 3k
Out and back nice long hills and the return is more down than up. Nice. i can do down. Average pace 10:22 correction 10:03. I had started my watch too early.
Bike 22.5k
I think it took me 2-3 minutes in transition. The first 3-4 miles I was rather aggressive. It was also the hilly part of the course. Figured each hill was probably the last... by miles 5-6 I caught a second wind and the course flattened out, i was able to rid a faster. Miles 8,9,10 I second guessed my existence and questioned the ability of my genetic make up to complete, participate, or survive such events without injury. Miles 11-14. I don't know. My *kitten* hurt, my knee hurt, my hip hurts. My brain had checked out over the stupidity it sensed in an unnecessary physical demand as this. Average speed 14.8mph, 4.07min/mile
Run 3k again.
The race was winning. I was beat. Ran walked the first bit let my legs uncramp and figure out how to walk once again. There was no pain. Bike muscles were spent, not running muscles. Average pace 11:22
I placed 2nd in my AG, have not checked to see if there were only 2 or 3 of us..yet. I think I'm sunburned. Ate panera again. They messed up my order. Instead of 1 steak arugula sandwich, I had 2. I did happily eat both of them. I had a nap an am hungry again. I think this was more effort than a half.
I had fun and had a cool number written on my arm and my calf. It was almost as cool as a tattoo.
ETA tldr- bold text silly. (And correct my malfunctioning fingers)
2nd in AG because everyone else in my AG was sleeping in on this fine Sunday morning.

@elise4270 From what I quickly read through earlier we dont enter time for transition. I need to go back and read now that I have time2

@elise4270 I heard this Moth Radio story about a year after Steve's death. I posted about it on FB, and to my surprise got a "Sad" reaction from.....Steve. (His widow also kept and occasionally used his phone, and had mistakenly used it to respond to my post....). You have to listen to the story to know how profound a thing that was... but it strangely brought me comfort at a bad time.

@HonuNui I found that to be an absolutely beautiful story. Even that it happened to another, I find comfort thinking that Alex is home now and I can call anytime I want.
I requested to memorialize his fb page today. I hope they don't remove my posthumous changes where I added a legacy holder, myself. DD didn't want it. And I added all his family members as family on his page. Figure they will all like that.
Google voice ported his number safely to the cloud of all things Google.9 -

Yesterday was a scheduled rest day, so I did just that since my legs are super sore following a guest instructor for Pump on Tuesday.I arrived to work yesterday to find out that the nurse for my department (mental health) tested positive for COVID. She was really bad about wearing her mask properly, and personal space was difficult for her at times...needless to say, all of my staff are freaking out. We’ve had a huge explosion of cases for inmates and staff at my prison over the last couple of weeks. Staying home to quarantine isn’t really an option since we’re essential and have to run the department, so I am going to only go between work and home over the next 1-2 weeks to make sure that if I do get sick, I don’t spread it anywhere else. I’m going to keep all of my runs to my neighborhood instead of the parks, for now, and the gym will be a no-go for a bit. Not that I go many places anyway. This stinks.13
