Happy August! Thanks Barbie!
My Dad's birthday lunch is today. He is 86. An actual social gathering with six people! We have all been isolating so it should be pretty safe.

Made yogurt in the IP and when it was done, it wasn’t yogurt but still milk. Maybe I needed more starter? So I put more in and put the IP on again. Yup, that must have been it. I just got up and am now draining it.
Tami – hey there. You made the right decision in coming here. Stop in often and get lots of good ideas
Pip – I remember once FIL said “now that I’m retired, I don’t know where I found the time to work” At the time I thought “yea, sure”. Now I know what he meant! You and Kirby are embarking on a wonderful journey.
Made a gazpacho that I’ll have for breakfast. Not sure how I feel about it. Does anyone have any good recipes? Preferably one that you put in a blender. And not high in calories (maybe somewhere around 100). I’d like it to make about 6 or less servings since I’m the only one who will eat it.
Windows had an update which broke Outlook. Now I read my email on Google Chrome. Will probably go to another. Thank goodness for Vince.
Anne DE – we use Revolution for our cats and get it from this place called Zoetis. They are an Australian company. But get this – it’s made in the US. But it’s much cheaper
Saturday here (forgot to post): Did Rodney Yee’s Yoga Cross Train DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do some balance games on the Wii
Heather – I hear ya about the updates. My computer did an update and now my email is totally messed up. Vince is going to get another one and set me up with that. He had the same problem so he’s getting to know this email
I agree you should have less sugar but I don’t know about the carbs. Less refined carbs – yes. But the carbs from fruits and veges? I don’t know. That’s something I don’t want to cut out
Fried up the salmon cakes I put in the refrig yesterday so we can have them later in the week. Also took the extra marinade out of the chicken that Vince is going to bbq so that the chicken doesn’t get too marinated. Going to make meringues later. They’re my new thing. I was on the spinach feta kick for a while, now I’m off it and the meringue is the new kick. Oh, that’s right, I need to make a pudding pie for Vince. Will do that once I finish checking in here.
Also got two towel toppers ready to just crochet. Will go to the farmer’s market and then the Salvation Army. Hopefully, they’ll have some different yarns that I can use. Many people do a craft and then have something like ½ a skein left over so they donate that. I can use that. Then I give the parts I have over to this guy who makes hats for the soup kitchen to use for pompoms or whatever.
Smbqt – welcome! And happy birthday early
M – I’m with you. I keep a calendar on the computer so Vince knows if I have something to do so he can plan an appt. or whatever accordingly. But I have a little planner where I write down the foods we’re going to eat the following week and what exercise I plan to do.
Bananas – have fun next week!
Invited Ken and Lynette for dinner tomorrow. Surprisingly, Lynette never got back to me. She usually is quite quick to accept. Anyway, I called Ken (since he’s out of work he’s home and pretty lonely) and he said they were planning to come. So they’ll be here tomorrow. I know Ken wanted to see Jess last time they were here. I told him that she’s working but he’ll see her when she gets home.
Faye – how frustrating. Hope they get you in for those tests real soon
Off to farmer’s market and then Salvation Army

It's now dark enough in the morning when I walk the dogs before breakfast that I need to use a flashlight but since it is the heart of the summer, it gets very warm during the after breakfast walk so I have to wear a jacket that I can take off and tie around my waist as the temperature rises. My zucchini plants are busy and I've had enough to eat for supper each night and share a few with my neighbors.
Lisa, all your house projects sound great. You are making your house a home.
Heather, I'm glad to hear that you were able to get your money back for the October cruise. I know you are disappointed about the cancellation, but glad you won't have to pay for it.
We don't pay much attention to how many cases there are locally. We just stay home and venture out only for essential errands. We plan our errands to go out as little as possible.
I am so happy to see how many of you are coming along on the journey to wellness. I can't do this alone.

Pip - congrats to you and Kirby both! He looks very, very happy. Glad y'all successfully closed on the house - possibly one of the hardest things to get through. When do you leave for California?
I KNEW there was something I forgot on that list. Our current main TV is doing a great imitation of a paperweight... inert, and not good for much. It went out Thursday night, after a storm. Probably a stray electron from the over-the-air antenna... so, we're going to pull the TV down and Corey will see if he can replace the fuse that is hopefully all that's blown. If not, then we're also TV shopping while we're in town. Luckily, TVs are as cheap as I've ever seen them.
Not that I don't believe he can fix it, but whether he can fix it or we buy a new one, we're also going to have to buy a surge suppressor that runs the cable through it to avoid a repeat.
Got my workout done, now for a shower and get that man moving.
Love y'all,

Barbie Thanks for being the catalyst keeping the fires of this thread burning. I am envious that you can walk early and need a jacket. Those mornings are usually starting around this time here, but next 10 days morning lows in the 70's. Crazy year. I love my Lole light nylon jacket.

Barbie - thanks for the new month. I can’t believe we’ve made it to August already.
Katla - I don’t keep cartons of ice cream in the house anymore either. I can avoid ice cream easier than chips though so they aren’t kept either.
Heather - I hope you get to see your Grandchildren again soon.
Our numbers are increasing as well. I figure in a couple of weeks it will be worse because there is a protest against masks happening this weekend. Unfortunately, it’s never these people that get hit they just pass it along.
Allie - we are having the same problem here with delivery charges for our electricity and gas. Last June my friend took her “trip or a lifetime” and drive to Alaska. She was shocked that her gas bill was 80.00 when there wasn’t even a nickels worth actually used. It was all delivery and other charges.
Lisa - I don’t think people take pride in doing a good job anymore and no one seems to listen to what a customer wants. We had a tv get killed in a thunderstorm two summers ago, very frustrating.
Yesterday we had a barbecue at work hosted by the social club for the participating members. As with any group at work it is made up of mostly the leadership team and we end up struggling to find help or ideas all the time. Anyway, we cooked 25 burgers and 25 hotdogs extra to leave in the fridge for the evening and night shift along with a full case of pop and chips plus the leftover pop and chips from the day shift. All told probably 50 or so cans of pop and about 70 bags of chips. We were given permission to leave early and left around 230. I received a text at 4 asking where all of the food was. Turns out the day staff took every single bit of it home with them when they left. I ended up going and getting more pop and chips and we ordered pizza for the evening staff. My boss is livid and is going to look at the cameras to see if we can see who the culprits were. The social club committee meeting this week will be discussing it and I’m thinking of putting forward that we spend our remaining money and disband. We put a lot of time and effort in for a group to be that disrespectful.
Today we are going to our daughter’s so she can cut her Dad’s hair. I’m so excited for him to get a cut! He is such a handsome man with a clean shaved face and well trimmed hair. Unfortunately he likes letting it go and doesn’t see how much it ages him.
I planted wildflower seeds in my flower box and I don’t know what is weeds and what is wildflowers. I think I’m going to move my bleeding hearts and one lily and pull everything else. Nothing seems to be blooming. I am not a gardener and feel sorry for plants that I touch.
These little flower stakes would really work well for me.

Heather: You are right about people overestimating their will power. My mom always referred to her “won’t power.” Won’t power kept her weight down, and her checkbook full.
Bananas: I am not a fan of ATMs either. I’ve read too many news accounts of people being robbed at ATMs. :ohwell:
Machka: In our state, we look at Covid cases county by county. Ours is one of the safest places in OR. The most challenged places are from Portland to Salem on both sides of the I-5 freeway. My SIL lives across the state near the Idaho border. The primary business there is agriculture. There have been Covid cases among the migrant workers who work in agricultural jobs, and some cases attributed to citizens of Idaho who are infected, and don’t know yet, who drive to Oregon to shop because we don’t have a sales tax & MJ is legal here. According to my cousin who also lives there, those shoppers rarely/never have masks. :ohwell:
Faye: Our doctors are doing business mostly by phone/internet. They don’t want patients in their workplace. I can’t blame them. :noway: I love your signature—”Faye--gray hair never in a bun
Jill of all trades mistress to none.”
Pip: The countdown is moving along. You’ll be off on your adventure in no time.
Lisa: Surge protectors are worth their weight in gold. I hope your TV is still usable. We don’t have a lightning rod of any kind. Our TV is connected via satellite dish and the antenna is mostly plastic. It is well below the peak of our roof. We live outside the reach of Portland over the air channels. Most people out here seem to have cable or satellite TV. We have had interruptions of electricity service on very rare occasions. I can’t remember the last one. Most wiring is underground. My horse friend lives out in the country at a higher altitude. She has had power interruptions now and then. I don't know for sure whether she has a TV, but I'm guessing she does. :flowerforyou:
We’re having a quiet morning so far. The dog is doing well and so are we.

Tracey Yes, disrespectful people are everywhere, and one reason I no longer go to the seniors center or host a women's fitness group. I remember the days when a group could have a fun potluck, but no more. A few do all the work and make good food and others bring unhealthy food from the store.
Katla Ice cream is my weakness, especially chocolate espresso from Umpqua.

I found an exercise DVD that I didn’t own at the Salvation Army!!
Came home and made meringues. They can be in the oven while I’m out at the pool. When I come in I’ll make the pudding pie
Faye – that’s the way Newcomers was going with their pot lucks. I was someone who would make something from scratch, trying to put healthy ingredients in it. Then so many people would just stop at the store and bring junk. The thing is that most people liked the junk more than the decent food. Well, I got to bring a fair amount home so that worked
I LOVE Healthy Choice Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. Unfortunately, by the time I get done, it’s no longer a Healthy Choice. Guess it’s good that Vince doesn’t like mint chocolate chip.

Love the stakes! I took river rocks and painted them with chalkboard paint once. My intention was to put inspirational words throughout my community garden in Hammond Oregon. Ended up writing stuff like:
Grow Dam mit
Move On slugs
Not this
Pretty weeds
AAack!
I do not know what this is!I
Also because my wood borders 'needed something" I put soil in old colorful high heel shoes and planted flowers in them. Stuck those about the edge. The veteran farmers just kind of left me alone!😁

Allie ~ I had wondered about the phosphates and your kidney disease. From what I read about phosphates online, it seems they would not be a good choice for you.
We have a lot of premium tv channels and 1000's of movies; yet, I can't find a single movie that I want to watch. I will be glad when our cable contract is over so maybe we can do better.

I am happy that most people seem to have obeyed the pleas of the council and not descended on the beaches for the Pride Manqué. In my limited experience Pride people are super nice and responsible. I looked at the webcams on and off and the beaches looked good. One of the things I LOVED about Brighton and Hove when I moved here was how friendly and community minded everyone was. To an amazing extent! In the summer we do get an influx of tourists, but the local population is wonderful. Really , really nice to each other. No doubt fuelled by privilege and comfortable wealth, but it is very relaxing. I love it here and I LOVE the people.

Barbie ... thanks for the August thread!
Lisa ... my new fence around the pool has gates that open outward, requires two hands to release the latch and self closes. Both my husband and I are frustrated every time we use them since we usually have buckets or lawn tools in our hands as well. For the moment, we're just using a bungee cord.
SuziQ ... hoping you're ok and the hurricane leaves you unscathed!
July was not a good month for me weight-wise ... but clothing that I purchased for an event that was subsequently cancelled was too large. So, the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Still, I know that I have been pushing the boundaries ... heck, ignoring the boundaries all together ... with my IF window. So this month my goal is to truly listen to my appetite and make healthy and nutritious choices when I do choose to eat. Dr. Bert Herring, IF pioneer, recently said that the open window for those who fast is an "opportunity to eat, not an obligation to eat." I've been looking at the clock and waiting for my window to open like a runner waits for the starting gun to go off ... sigh.
Have a good weekend!

Happy August all. So grateful Barbie gets it started each month. Even though I don't always have time to read each day and it can take me forever to catch up, it is a good group.
Tracey-that's too bad about the co-workers taking everything home. Unfortunately people don't always think of others. While our staff events are during the day (when we had them!), everything was separated out into two servings. We found it was better for us to serve the staff to control portions (breakfast provided) because the first people in line would take doubles and triples of everything. After everyone has gone through line we announce when "seconds" are available. (we have around 220 staff to feed).
Back to working on windows today. Have two rooms primed and will start painting when I finish this. I have decided next year I will get frames completely redone (didn't have this done when windows were replaced). I had the old ranch style windows that push out but went for new sliders. The old style had slots in frame for handles, etc, and the wood is really old. So for now I have used some wood filler, a coat of primer and will do one coat of paint (they aren't all that visible and it's just me here to look at them!). However, it will look cleaner and be a good temporary measure. Since I had the supplies on hand, it costs nothing but my time. And, it does keep me moving. Hope to actually hang curtains early this evening, but if I don't make that goal, they aren't going anywhere.
Julie-I am jealous of your trip to the beach!
Take care all,

@Katla49 I actually have 2 friends who were actually held up in Central Paris in nice neighborhoods. One a loong time ago, nearly 20 years ago, she was withdrawing money from an ATM during a busy market in a busy area and time of day and a guy on drugs she thought came and told her to withdraw more money. She had withdrawn about 50 and he wanted her to take out 4x that. i don't remember what happened exactly but somehow someone came and she didn't but she was scared. and then about 6 years ago another close friend the same was being held up while taking out money in the daytime in a nice area. i've never had any issue but i avoid late at night, remote areas, if a couple of guys seem to be possibly hanging around idle near, or something like that. Today i deposited a check in the inside ATM while the bank was open.

Thank you ever so much Barbie for keeping this thread going!
Oh Margaret, :brokenheart: Hope you can one day be consoled a little by knowing he is now free of pain, you were a tiger in his defense and by Drew’s loving presence. Our shoulders are here for you.
@sarahkatzenelson452 for me, 2 hrs cooking/food prep=258C, 2 hrs dishwashing=284 but pip and others will tell you that an HRM gives much more accurate measurements.
Belated welcome @Selftami Mamaw, @smbqt2.
Machka fuzzy slippers, cozy fireside tea and a nap, just what the Dr. ordered.
Sara in the UK oh no, not bring out the cakes?!?
Faye “tequila assisted living” So frustrating to have your caregivers postpone needed appointments.
Michele what yoghurt starter do you use? Want to try making goat’s milk yoghurt soon. Found a DVD you didn’t already own? Are you SURE???
Yvonne hadn’t thought of the word “filk” in decades, brought back pleasant memories of late night filksinging at SF conventions. “Our streaming radio station” You have a radio station?
Heather slightly creeped out by those darling girls’ disembodied heads surrounded by gravel. Thanks for replacing those mental images with whole body happy action pics. Envy you the Edie hug.
Tina “I've since figured out how to stop that drip and it's a wonderful thing.” Please share the magic! I have neither a, nor “the” virus, nor allergies, but whenever I start walking briskly, my nose starts dripping just as briskly.
Pip oh that puppy pic of Yogi! How could you ever tell him “No!”???
Rebecca thanks for the glitter meme, shared it with my artistic/crafty pals. your painted rock signs and stiletto planters.
Kay “[ingredients]… she couldn’t pronounce. Bless whoever gets her as their health coach." ROTFLMAO. I agree with Beth that “processed” is over used as a prohibition. Refrigerating, washing, paring, cutting and cooking are all processing. But OH those chemically enhanced additives. If I can’t say it, I doubt my system can put it to good use.
Katla Which flavor was your single serving ice cream ?
Julie “it's not really helpful when people say ‘just do it’ “ I agree, and doesn’t help even when I say that to myself. What does help me is seeing myself in a mirror at line dancing and T’ai Chi. Maybe I should put something reflective on the pantry door.
Viv “…lottery day for Mum” ? understand the words individually but not the phrase.
Carol are belated best birthday wishes due you? Had it it my mind yesterday was the day, but have no clue why I thought that.
Lisa SMH at the fence guys. They could be from Curry County, Oregon.
Tracey there is a market for your plant stakes here. I’d buy!
@megblair you are in my thoughts, hope all’s well with you and yours.
Note to self: Better not to shop when annoyed with hubs, came home with a bagful of “revenge” sports bras, but it didn’t make me any happier.

totally knackered today. i did very little! i had to go to rental place while the fix it guy changed the burners. they were 10 years old and one HAD to be changed and he suggested changing both at the same time. he explained that they need a special cleaning product (who knew ?) that is hard to find since made of cast iron. (usual old fashioned electric burner material like for a hot plate). somehow after that i was wiped. i went to get a new electronic photo and signature for license renewal, picked up some low cal things for treats (bubbly water, raw sauercraut, coucous veggies, lentil curls, and spicy corn cakes (like tiny rice cakes), and raspberries and watermelon. laundry. and shopped online at ikea. all is reasonably priced except the sofa bed which i really need to try out first.3

Young people, Stupid Leaders & China originated Sars2/Coronavirus So I went over early to get a few groceries. I had a few items and took a place in line behind a nice young lady dressed in workout clothes. We had a nice chat about the gym being closed even though NOT ONE case of the virus has been traced there. How the owners on the verge of bankruptcy had done an amazing job to keep it clean and safe with all members doing their part. It was closed after the police warned the owners and put a yellow crime scene tape over the doors. This is the gym the police and firefighters use daily. Our governor is making everyone pay because she won't put any pressure on the corporate farms and the labor bosses that profit from migrant workers. They are considered essential! Even today after back to baseline rules are proclaimed as law, in a town east of here a friend took photos of the vans sardine full of unmasked workers. With a porta potty in tow. A paradise for the virus. The farms and labor companies should be responsible for furnishing adequate safe housing and necessary medical supplies. They blame the community for being racist and not providing housing and transportation that allows social distancing. Glad I am a bit west of the hottest spot, but it is on the increase here and I think this fall will be a disaster. Such unnecessary insanity! There were very few cases and no deaths around here and to the east until the migrant workers were bussed in last spring. Now it is spreading like wildfire and many small businesses are finished for good.
Ok back to my story. Well, a young man gets in line behind me and after a bit grows inpatient and gets out of line and finds a new line opening. He comes over and tells the young lady (he had just met) that he had a spot for her. She follows him over and he says, "You go ahead of me,'Ladies first." I stand a bit miffed before finally going over to that line. I just stood there That jerk totally ignored me. They both had a basket full of items and I had a few. Whatever happened to old ladies first especially in a time when the older is the most vulnerable.

Barbara – for the yogurt started, I used Great Value brand plain yogurt. Now the first batch that I used it in had no problem whatsoever with. It was the second batch. But putting more in did the trick. Actually, I thought I needed two batches for the pops, but it seems I only needed one. Well, no big deal, I’ll just eat the rest. Maybe I’ll put some frozen blueberries in it. When they thaw, they make a sort-of juice that flavors the rest of the yogurt. I keep a spreadsheet on my phone so that’s why I know that I don’t have this DVD. They had another one that I thought I had and, sure enough, when I looked on the spreadsheet I owned it already.
Faye – I didn’t quite follow you. When you say “back to baseline rules” what exactly does that mean? Are gyms open? Honestly, if it were totally up to me (and I know it’s not) I would have no problem going back to lockdown except I think gyms should be open. I know, there are businesses who lost a lot of money the first time. I’d like us to get a handle on this. I think gyms should be open because the first time there was a lockdown we had a lot of rioting and looting. To me, some of this was because people just had a lot pent up and needed to get that aggression out. If the gyms were open, maybe they’d be able to get their aggression out there.
Made the pudding pie. I usually used the cook & serve type, but I only had instant. Hope it turns out just as well. We shall see…..

Tina “I've since figured out how to stop that drip and it's a wonderful thing.” Please share the magic! I have neither a, nor “the” virus, nor allergies, but whenever I start walking briskly, my nose starts dripping just as briskly.
I use 180mg tablets of Allegra (fexofenadine) before bed and no morning drip. I don't know if it would keep it from dripping on a brisk walk, but maybe you can try a lower dosage tablet and see. I tend to need the max dosage of whatever it is for anything to work, if it works at all.
I used to use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for that (50mg) and it stopped the drip too, BUT studies show it's not good to take diphenhydramine on a regular, long term basis. Others also get drowsy on that, but it doesn't affect me that way at all. That's also why I cannot use it as a sleep aid. For reference, Benadryl tablets are 10mg.

Faye ... You have to wear your gray hair in a bun to be treated like an old, vulnerable lady ... just sayin'2

Rebecca: I’m likely to follow your lead on the chips. I bought some I shouldn’t have today. I have a safe place to store them that is out of sight and out of mind, & I plan to stay out of them except for occasional treats.
Heather: Your granddaughters are charming.
Barbara: My ice-cream was mostly vanilla with little bits of dark chocolate mint throughout. It was in a small paper cup with a lid, no cone. I’ll buy that flavor again! This particular store sells only Tillamook Ice Cream, along with some cooked food, gifts, cards and an amazing selection of Covid-19 face masks. One of the partners has been making the masks & does a beautiful job.
Bwcetc: You are telling it like it is. To be treated like an old lady you need to be sick, grumpy & tint your gray hair blue.
Taking a flying guess, I am willing to bet that quite a few of us are Baby Boomers, latter day hippies, and adventurers when we get the chance. The Covid pandemic has really taken a bite out of travel for many of us. :ohwell:  It can't last forever. It just seems like it.
:grumble:
