Thanks Barbie for the new month.

Kim - it is hard finding some fruits and vegetables here. I was told that it’s because of Covid and the fires in California. I can’t even find iceberg lettuce!

Kim, great job on the coconut milk sub!
    Allie, {{{HUGS}}}
Barbara, perhaps when Joe goes out somewhere you could quickly run the self clean? I have to admit, I don't like the fumes either, must do it in good weather so that doors and windows can be open and have to have the fan on. Which reminds me, I should probably do mine soon, before the winter weather starts....
Tracey, your granddaughter is only 4 and coming out with that stuff (bedtime, yo!), she's going to be a handful! Although, as a grandparent, I have to say she's a hoot! lol
Barbie, thanks for getting us started once again, I think a new month is just what I need...
So, last week I started feeling not all that great and by Sat afternoon realized I had a UTI. On my way home from work that day I grabbed a bottle of cranberry juice, 1.89 lt of it (about 1/2 gallon for you non metric ladies). When I got home, I drank about half of it. The next morning, after coming home from a walk with my friend, I downed the rest of it, then went grocery shopping and bought more. Spent most of Sunday afternoon drinking the juice at a slower pace that the day before and monday morning phoned my GP and requested a prescription and lab requisition. As it wasn't my GP but his resident (teaching clinic), I got asked a bunch of questions, but he did eventually agree that both were a good idea. Picked up the pills Monday afternoon and took one as soon as I got home. Dropped my sample off to the lab Tuesday afternoon and already heard from my GP today. He said it's not conclusive, they are waiting for the culture, which takes 48 hours, but there were red and white blood cells in the sample, so clearly there's something going on. As I had already taken two pills before "producing" the sample there is a chance that it was already being fought, so the culture may not be dramatic but I'm glad I did things the way I did anyway. I am feeling so much better already! Now I'm just having post nasal drip to deal with. Not sure what that's all about, but it sure it annoying. It irritates my throat which makes me cough, which irritates my throat, which.... well, you get the picture! And of course coughing is not something people want to be seeing/hearing other people do these days! I am pretty sure I'm not carrying Covid around with me!
And now it's past my bedtime. Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

Kim - I have an authentic Goan curry that uses sweetcorn as a final add. It's delicious and the recipe is for goat. I can usually get goat from the butcher, but lamb also works. Good decision! :D
I keep a stock of blocks of creamed coconut. You can just cut a chunk off, so it's easier than opening a can. (If I do I freeze the rest) I buy them in packs from Amazon. They keep.

Oh my word! You all have so many clothes and shoes! My DH has far more than I do. When I first met him I was shocked! :D Plus I keep my clothes for ever, rarely buy anything new, and have a 'one in one out principle. Right now, because I'm not socialising, I'm getting annoyed with my smart clothes hanging in the wardrobe. They seem utterly ridiculous! I suppose one day I might put on a dress. :o:o
I am only wearing leggings and long sleeved t shirts at the moment and have about 3 pairs of each. I have two thin jumpers. No thick ones. I wear a long cardigan if it's chilly. Two of those. I have a few smarter tops and a couple of pants, but haven't worn them since covid.
Yesterday some new bamboo socks arrived. 3 pairs. I will throw out three.
I really hate clothes buying and clothes shopping. But I think I scrub up well when required. I haven't been required for ages, but I make a bit of an effort for Gwendolen, or the grandchildren.

Going to finish getting my phone sorted today. I hope I've got the 'do not disturb' thing right. Now to look at ringtone etc. I'm still sad to have lost my messages. They are still on the old phone though. ;)
Poor DH, who bought me my phone for my birthday, was a bit upset at my tech angst. I will have to reassure him that I am delighted with it. <3

THANK YOU BARBIE for starting us off again. <3 October is my and DH'S birthday month. I'm fond of the month. We would have been going on a cruise up the Douro River in Portugal for his birthday. We got our deposit back. I've asked him to make Crème Brulée for my birthday dinner tomorrow. I haven't seen any sign of it. He's never made it before. My son is going to be popping round for a minute at tea time with pink flowers I have requested. Champagne is going in the fridge. I will be cooking Skate in Black Butter.
If DH does make the dessert we can give my son any extras. It must be the most fattening dessert in the world. But it is my very favourite. Oldie but Goodie.

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Machka - I could sell in CA and buy that house… Can I have the second floor?

    Kim from N. California

They're doing "expressions of interest" for that house, but based on what else is available in the area, I'd have to guess that the price they'd be interested in is somewhere between $2 and $3 million. I wouldn't put it over $3 million because it needs some work. I'd want to renovate the bathroom, the kitchen counter tops, the kitchen floor, and I'd want to take out the carpet and refinish the hardwood floors which I'm sure lurk under all that carpeting.

But I love that tower ... I'm guessing that's what you like about the second floor. :)

And it's way, way out of my price range. I wonder what they'd do if I put in an expression of interest of $250,000. Oh well.

    From Action for Happiness ...

"Life is far from perfect, but there are lots of reasons for optimism. Setting positive goals for the future gives our lives a sense of direction and purpose. And although we face many challenges there are also lots of reasons to stay hopeful. By consciously choosing our priorities we can overcome issues, make progress and focus on what really matters."

Funny that the first one says ...

"Write down your most important goals for this month"

    All right then ... :)

    1. Finish my current course. I am currently working on the last assignment.

    2. Thus, hopefully, finish my degree! If I'm successful, my grad will be in December. They say they'll let us know what form graduations will take.

    3. Hosting/running/organising a weekend-long cycling series later in October. It's the first one our club has run since early July, and I'm "in charge" of this one. The weekend will start with a 50 km ride on the Friday night as a warm-up, a 160 km ride on the Saturday as the main event, and a 100 km ride on Sunday as a cool down. If all goes well, my husband and I might ride the 50 km route just before the actual event. We'll wait and see. And we'll have to do some cycling to get ready!

    4. Taxes - October is tax month.

    5. Medical stuff - as usual.

    Cheers!

    Thursday 1 October

University Workshop - online and at home. Might be the last one! Or maybe we'll have one next week. Not sure.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) test. We've been advised to get tested if we exhibit hay fever symptoms and both my husband and I have been. It is spring after all! But nevertheless, we decided it was a good idea to get the test now, before the borders open. Awaiting results.

Now we're in self-isolation for 48 hours, until the results arrive. :):)

If I could, I'd keep going for tests in order to get these 48 hours of self-isolation. :)

Later in the afternoon, I took a nap for 1.5 hours. What luxury!! I've been so incredibly tired.

And my assignment. Still working on it throughout the day, and this evening.

    Happy October, ladies! <3

Thank you, Barbie, for getting us off to a fresh start. :)

Rebecca - love those quotes and the creative pony tail, lol.

Lisa - so glad to hear from you. Sorry, I think I missed what the doc recommended - are you on antibiotics?

Heather - sorry to hear about the near driving misadventure, glad all is OK. My DH put the battery charger on his car yesterday, he really needs to take it out for a run every couple weeks, or I need use it on one of his runs to town. I never remember to take it. :( Oh well, trickle chargers are great.

Happy Birthday to you and John!!

SOCKS - Heather and anyone else, I'm looking for info on Bamboo socks. Do they shrink over time? Stretch? I am shopping for heavily cushioned 1/4 (just over the ankle) or crew athletic summer type (not wool) socks. Got some passable ones at Walmart but they no longer make the size I need. I'm a shoe size 9, and the ones which fit shoe size 4 - 10 are really too small and end up cramping my toes. I found some full cushion bamboo ones on Amazon but I'm not familiar with that type of thread.

For now, my plan is to look in the men's section at Walmart and see what they have. I'm tough on socks as I wear them for slippers sometimes. Amazon seems to have plenty of items but I'd like to see them in person or at least get recommendations from someone I know.

So, actually - suggestions on where to buy lady's large heavily cushioned socks are very welcome! TIA. B)

Machka - thank you for the October action calendar.
    My goals -
    • get the flower beds cleaned while we still have decent weather,
    • keep working on de-cluttering (the thrift stores had been plugged so weren't taking items, so my closet cleaning ground to a halt this summer). Need to check with them.
    • get back to SWSY
    • get my honesty pants back to feeling comfortable.

Dogs getting up so I better scoot. Make it a wonderful day! <3

    Lanette B)

I have a pair of fairly heavy bamboo socks which I like. They're a little longer than crew and very comfortable. I wear them in boots during the winter or when cycling to keep my feet warm. However, when they're washed, they take a longer time than you'd expect to dry.

I also have a couple pair of lightweight bamboo socks which I haven't tried yet. They've got bicycles on them so I'm waiting till warmer weather to wear them while cycling.

If you're going to wear socks as slippers, look up "Slipper Socks". :)

Hey, beautiful strong ladies of excellent repute, good morning to you all,

I didn't realize it was Oct 1 until I saw the new thread link. That means I must rearrange my day so I can get the monthly accounting checked out. I am up early and surprised that this new thread is already on page 2.

Workout I decided to shake things up this morning so I added walking on toes as if wearing heels to my sashay which is the final exercise of my routine. I amazed myself with a lot of hip movement while walking a straight line. On the return walk, I stepped in liquid on the kitchen floor. I was briefly puzzled before I realized the source. I mean what the hey, it isn't right. A girl of advanced years cannot even sashay without soiling her fresh donned sports panties and cleaning the floor.

DrKatie on Jeans I refuse to watch those discourses given by young ladies on fashion. By skinny jeans do they mean jeggings or a tight hip fit compared to relaxed or do they mean a tapered leg compared to a straight leg? These little wenches need to be more precise with fashion advice. They weren't even born in the days of bellbottoms that later became the bootleg style. Then there is a wide leg style in the straight leg. What about MOM jeans with their high rise that come in relaxed, curvy, and skinny all referring to hip fit. They all have taped legs but how they fit and look is very different.

How jeans look also depends on the fabric which also offers a wide selection these days. All kinds of weights and blends. Then inseam from to the foot to just below the knee. Then to make matters more complicated, jeans come in bleached damaged to ones that looked like the victims of a savage dog attack. I suggest the next style will have bloodstains around all the destruction. The super low rise. What woman looks good in those? 6-inch rise? When you can see the band and color of the young ladies G string above her jeans or determine her natural hair color, that is too low. Then there are the girls that resolve the super low rise and g string dilemma by going commando. The waist fat roll falls over the top, making them look even lower rise. Pair them with a crop top and it is great fashion for a Wal Mart shopping spree.

I refuse to call super skin-tight polyester spandex leggings jeans. It is great that they finally named them jeggings. My friend's granddaughters are greatly offended when I call them yeast infection incubators. Those things don't breathe and wearing cotton panties under just provides a moisture collector that won't dry. The commando presentation doesn't solve the problem either.

I take my jeans seriously and know the weight and blend of every pair. My all-time favorite is my AE mom jeans in 6 oz, 98% cotton and 2% spandex, 11.75" rise, relaxed hip, tapered leg to the ankle, and in a faded blue and NO DESTRUCTION. They are the coolest and most comfy for warm weather and around the house. I don my Carhartts for yard and garden work. They are mid-rise straight leg 12 oz, 99% cotton, 2% spandex, and I have both the double and triple stitch styles. I don't like them for sitting around because the waistband hits about the sciatic nerve area, when sitting, and aggravates it. They also don't allow the freedom of movement of the high waist mom jeans. Mom jeans earned their name for a reason. A mom must be ready to run, jump, dive, twist, bend, leap, kick, summersault, cartwheel, or sashay at a moment's notice and that is just to keep up with the kids. Should the DH come in a put a single red rose in his loves teeth, she must be ready to Argentine Tango till her DH drops in exhaustion. MOM jeans give her confidence and allow her the freedom to be all she can be.

    Honesty pants I like that.

I have a pair of jeans that don't quite fit I will call them my honesty pants.

Plans for today is stay with the 300 calories 3 times 150 calories x2. It worked a couple weeks ago. And I lost 3.6 lbs. that week. Last week I blew it and gained. So back to journaling and checking how I did it the week I lost.
today i'm making zucchinni lasagna and stuffed peppers.

Machka - thank you for your bamboo sock input. My orthotics are very hard material (as are yours, I'd suspect) so cushioned socks to the rescue.

LOL I should have clarified my regular socks often end up as slipper socks when I kick my shoes and Oofos off now and then-not on a regular basis.

I have a lot of the regular slipper socks with the non-slip grippers but alas, same problem - not enough cush.

Linda - yes, good ole honesty pants. I have a pair of jeans - several, actually, like Faye's with a little bit of spandex, that are very comfortable and fit well when I'm at the weight I like. When they verge on getting "painful" then it's time to buckle down.

I donated my "fat pants" so have no excuse and I refuse to buy any more jeans. There are times I need to be presentable and can't live in my baggy sweats all the time. :p

Yes, my orthotics are hard. If I want to walk a longer distance with them, I wear a thin pair of socks with lightweight wool socks over them. That's my go-to for hiking, long walks, and long runs.

But since I moved to Australia, a lot of the time I'm in bare feet ... in sandals or just bare feet ... so I've gotten used to walking on hard surfaces with no foot protection.

Went out for supplies for dinners' veg and told DH I would get the cream he needs to make the dessert. They didn't have any cream. Masses of yoghurt, but no double cream. Of course he is out walking without his phone. :# I am going to leave him to sort it out for himself. I have seen that he has printed out a recipe, so his intentions are good.

Lanette - my socks are thin and I haven't washed them yet.

Ragu from the freezer tonight with butternut squash and broccoli. Parmesan.

Loving my phone now I have mastered it.

    HAPPY OCTOBER!

I think I missed Spring and Summer, so hoping this will be a happy and blessed month for all! :)

Barbie ~ Thanks for a new month!

Lisa ~ Glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Machka ~ I have downloaded the Happiness Calendar and am planning to follow each day. My goals for October are mainly not to gain any more weight and to stay calm around angry people. Also, to listen before I speak.

Lanette & Machka ~ I had a couple of pair of those house shoe socks from Walmart and they didn't give me enough support so had to quit wearing them.

(((Allie))) ~ Children get older, but, we still worry about them as much as we did when they were young.
