Sheri- Do your best to choose healthy foods and be rigorous with portion control. This is like the tale of the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race to better health. :flowerforyou:

Thank you Katla. I tend to get so focused on doing everything "right." I'm trying to learn to let go of perfectionism and trust myself.

Just walked out to the harbour Fish Market to buy our treat for our anniversary later this month. I wanted skate, but they didn't have any, so we bought halibut steaks. Also got monkfish for fish tandoori, and then we spotted two Dover Soles! As we had already bought the halibut we felt a bit guilty buying that as well, but then we decided it would be our Christmas Dinner. :D We are on our own this year.
Also picked up giant prawns, blinis and smoked mackerel.
On the way home I couldn’t resist the butcher and picked up two lamb shanks and goats cheese.

The nurse rang me after lunch to talk me through my routine health/ bp check up. Sugar is fine, chloresterol up just a tiny bit, but still OK. That might be my weight gain. I declined the option of statins and will renew my efforts to shed the pounds. I hadn't checked my bp (my bad) so I will have to do that and drop a note off at the docs. She has cancelled the Q risk chat scheduled for next week and shared my puzzlement at why that was there. My doctor chat is for next week, Wednesday. Lowish calcium and iron, I think. Could be parathyroid, but I'm not going to anticipate.

Salmon tonight on a bed of fennel and leek.

Heather- Do you share your recipe for Chirstmas Cake? If you’re keeping it for just your own family I won’t be offended. My grandmother made fruitcake every year as a holiday tradition. It was full of candied fruit and rum. My mother bought our fruitcake from a monastery in Mount Angel, OR. I wonder whether they’re still making it for the holiday season. My dad adored the fruitcake but I didn’t care for the candied fruit. I still don’t care for it. I like boiled spice cake and haven’t made it in several years. I tend to eat every bite until it is gone. That doesn’t help my weight or nutrition. :noway:

Viv- How great to see you today!!! :star: We had only one trick or treater this Halloween. :flowerforyou:

Sheri OH- DH & I tend to favor meat, poultry & fish, and green veggies such as green beans and broccoli. I like brown rice and my digestive system agrees with me. DH likes potatoes & we both like sweet potatoes. We measure portions. Portion control is our best friend while trying to lose or maintain weight. :star:

Fae- Great job adjusting your outlook. Empowerment and self-worth are vital.

KJ- I think you are the world’s best childcare provider. :flowerforyou:

My daughter lives in a small town in Illinois. When she moved there, the locals were thrilled to have her on the election committee. They needed to have at least one Democrat to ensure fairness. Here in Oregon we have vote by mail. It is especially good during this pandemic. People do not have to worry about catching CoVID while voting.

    Welcome to November...
I’ve stepped back from a lot of things “Weight related” in the last couple of weeks, as I was finding myself obsessing with calories....the scale going up and down, and everything else to the point that I didn’t know if I was coming or going, and feeling like I had failed. I’m working on trying to make better food choices, and being more consistent with food logging in MFP. I’m not making any promises, but I’m trying. I hate that feeling of failure...
November is a new month 💕

Winsby I have taken vitamin E since I was a teen at 200 mg twice daily. During menopause, I upped it to 400 mg twice a day. I take E, D3, and Flaxseed oil, in liquid (gel capsule) rather than a tablet. My body doesn't seem to process tablets very efficiently. If your profile photo is up to date, I doubt you are older than most. Not sure who is oldest, but a lot more in their 70's than I once thought. I understand this ongoing thread has some in their 80's.

Allie Ask your doc to refer you to a genetic counselor. They are the ones that map your family history and determine if you meet the requirements for testing and if your insurance will cover it. Your insurance will cover the counselors initial visit if your PCP or specialist refers you. If approved you will be sent to a room (known as the Llama room) to fill a vial full of spit. That is it! Then you wait 6 weeks and the counselor will call you back in to review results and if necessary send you to a specialist that can test further than what a yearly mammogram can reveal.

Ginny Wonderful that your ladies group is finding a way to carry on. I think that is good for the mind as well as the body. Not many in my old group that haven't become paranoid over this virus and afraid to even visit across the street.

Michele Glad you like my thankful list. That is only a few, but I will probably keep the rest to myself as not many get or appreciate my sense of humor.

Terri It makes me happy that my "prayer" gives you smiles.

Tracey I like the idea of the magic of Santa and goodwill. but hate the idea of threatening a kid with a lump of coal when the kid knows that they can be a brat and still get what they want. The idea of receiving instead of giving as a child is contrary to the way I was brought up. I got mainly handmade gifts or supplies to make things. I was required to pick something I had and loved and give it to someone less fortunate. The hardest but most joyful year was gifting the special doll that I bought with my own money and had made many outfits for to a girl my age with cancer. It was in her letter to Santa. I refused to wrap it and donate it anonymously as that was too easy. I needed to hand it over in person so she knew how much the doll meant to me. It was hard, very hard, but it was a magical moment and the best gift I ever received. The gift of seeing her joy far exceeded any gift I had or have ever received.

Katla - In the last few years I gave been using a wonderful book I bought on Amazon called, 'Cakes for Romantic Occasions'. Their chocolate fudge cake and rich fruit cake have become my standards. They do all the calculations for you for different sizes and shapes of tins. I first made the fruit cake for DH's 70th and was so impressed I've been using it for Christmas ever since. Slices much better than the Delia Smith one I was making before. The chocolate cake I first made for Max's christening, which is when I bought the book to help me know how to make tiers and fancy decorations.
The recipe has candied peel and glacé cherries in it, so it might not suit you. DH is not mad about glacé cherries, but likes them in this cake.
I think the author is American, May Clee-Cadman.

    Tuesday 3 November

Get outside and observe the changes in nature around you.

Went for a walk along the post after lunch with DH, DYD and her dogs. It’s a beautiful clear day here and spectacular. Belfast Lough looked spectacular.

The trees are now mostly bare of leaves, and the small beaches along the way we’re heaped with seaweed from the recent storms. We watch a flotilla of mallard forage along the water’s edge. I even found a few stray blackberries along the pathway.

Can’t remember anything else as I’m totally chill from the walk.

My mother just came back from food shopping. She buys everything she can think of, and double if we were out. For example, only one of us eats hot dogs. We have twenty of them in the fridge already, so she bought sixteen more. I am going to have to go with her from now on. There is simply no room for all the food she buys. And very little of it is fresh produce. Much of it is just habit. She especially wants to be needed now that I am cooking. But this is ridiculous.

I looked at one of the before/after threads with photos. So motivating! I just need to do it without the gym.

Heather- We are on our own this holiday season, too. Our adult children live in different states-Illinois and Virginia. We live here in Oregon and it is unlikely that we will travel by air this year. Air travel is too difficult for DH and I won’t leave him at home alone. :ohwell: The good news is that we have facetime and Zoom available so we can stay in touch with our family far away.

Terri- Congratulations on your walk with your DH, younger daughter, and dogs. We are experiencing rain and will not be walking the dog outside other than potty trips to the yard. :star:

Viv-Great to see you here again!!!

Annie in DE-I am so sorry to hear that your mom is having a tough time. :flowerforyou:

I’ve been watching CNN election coverage. I hope my candidates win. I doubt we’ll get final numbers before tomorrow for state, county, and local election results. Oregon has vote by mail available, no postage required, for all citizens this year due to the pandemic.

The Walk I took the hill about a mile to the top and a 100-foot rise. I heard the sound and looked up to see the geese heading back north to the river. I watched in awe as they continually rotated positions in their V formation. I never get tired of watching the awesomeness of nature. So many geese selflessly working together to ensure a successful flight for all. It will warm tomorrow and should lift this overcast so they can try again tomorrow and wing their way to a warmer climate. I took a long way back to get in my 3 miles.

"If you can't achieve your goal for today due to insurmountable circumstances, regroup, retreat, rest up and try again later," Sincerely The Geese

Fae listening to the geese as they return to the river tired but not defeated

P.S. Oregon has several wintering grounds for Canadian geese, but there are always some that want to go further south. If they can never make it out, they do well wintering along the Columbia River and places in the Willamette Valley. Many geese are hatched here and never migrate.

Katla this has happened before. This time is was nice to hire someone to fix it. We had the man who built the stairs in son's garage. It happened on Saturday and it is already fixed for a reasonable price. I have a list of all the people I like who have worked on our home and son's. I still need to find a good plumber. We are due for a hot water heater and it would be good to get it done before it has to be done.

Sitting in son's sun room. I open it when warm enough. We are in 70's today and sunny. Our October was cold and cloudy. What a nice break. Going to be in 30's next week, so I am enjoying ever minute.

Son's car sold. I decided to hold onto the house until at least a year from next spring. I do not want to sell it in the middle of COVID. I enjoy coming over here and it gives Drew a fenced in back yard to romp around in. This may become my retirement home. It is half the size of our home and much easier to take care of. The only draw back is the parking so we shall see.

I did enjoy walking by the lake today by son's house and in the morning I walked the path near our home that has a creek running through some woods. I am fortunate to have such wonderful places to walk where it is easy to social distance.

Margaret- I'm glad that you had a good time walking by the lake. Water has its own magic, and helps with easing stress and worry. I live beside a river and it is wonderfully interesting, and soothing. I'm happy you know someone who was able do good quality repairs. :star:
