30 pounds to lose challenge by March 2021

I was grocery shopping the other day and found myself noticing the many items on the shelves I used to buy and saying to myself “not good for me .. not good for me”. These were items truly not good for me, high carb and salty processed foods with little if any nutritional value. It’s been about eight weeks now since I’ve had any of that in the house, making it much easier to make good choices on a daily basis. I’m certain one day I’ll falter, but right now feeling good I’ve held strong. I’m hoping cravings for high carb items will wane soon.
Just thinking out loud here.
Be well everyone.6 -
I'll weight in on Wednesdays. I am going to set ambitious goals afterreading@frankwbrown's inspirational quotes. Since it's a 30 lbs challenge, I will make that my goal.
Good luck to everyone else on reaching your goals.

Are you weighing food? I find that I'm incredibly inaccurate at eyeballing and eat significantly more if I'm not making sure my tracking is accurate.

This is the same thing I've been doing for the last 6 months when I shop. I tend to avoid the chips and soda and candy (conveniently located in the same aisles) and focus on the produce section and the fish freezer. My wife and I agreed to keep cookies and chips out of the house (she still gets her crackers, which tempt but I try to avoid). We haven't had ice cream in the freezer in months. It really takes time to get used to this, but we also treat ourselves by going out to eat once or twice a week at our favorite outdoor dining restaurant, where we can indulge a little by sharing a hot fudge sundae or a little cake. This can be hard, but being restricted to more healthy food at home has actually made it easier for me to select healthy food when I eat out. The cravings for high carb processed food DO eventually wane. Give yourself time to develop new food tastes and cravings. You can do it!
This past 3 weeks, I've been struggling with my weight seesawing up and down. I figured out that my biggest food weakness (salty) was holding me back. I've been snacking on salty almonds and peanuts. So I decided to take a break and not eat any for the last 4 days. It worked. My mid week weigh-in shows I've lost 2 lbs and I'm headed for the 170's, a weight that I haven't seen in almost 40 years!5 -

But I didn't! 😎
Here's a couple things you might try- Do a deep breathing exercise. Relax, breath deeply, slowly inhaling/exhaling, while focusing on nothing other than your breath.
- Try sipping an herbal tea with lemon and honey.

Something that is really helping me right now... protein bars. I know there is some mixed feelings about these. In the past I have avoided them because of added sugar and not so natural ingredients. However, I’m changing my tune on this. I’ve been including one protein bar for my mid afternoon snack for many reasons:
1. I struggle to get enough protein
2. It helps curb my ‘eat everything in site between the end of the workday and dinner’ habit
3. It is a little daily treat so I don’t feel deprived
So... are protein bars a part of your plan? If so, what’s your favourite kind?5 -
I like the 150 calorie Think! bars. My dietitian recommended these. Make sure you check the calories....some are more than 150.
4 -
I also like the Think! high protein bars but I'm careful to use them only on days when I do a lot of exercise (mostly cardio - hiking/walking) because the bars I use are 240 calories (20 grams of protein). Sometimes, I cut a bar in half.2

I too struggle to get enough protein. So, I eat/drink protein shakes, beef (sweet and hot) jerky, and protein bars. I also make tuna patties and salmon patties.
My favorite protein bars are Zone Perfect: a variety of them, but especially Chocolate Almond Raisin and Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk. I've tried other bars, but I find most to be too dense and paste-like.4 -

I don't have a protein bar, I have a Premier Protein shake (caramel) with a single shot of espresso from Starbucks...it gets me by and only 160 calories with 1g of sugar and 30g of protein! I have it daily so I can totally relate!!!!6 -

If you want a high protein snack with no added sugar a couple of boiled eggs do the trick....will carry you through to dinner no problem. 180 calories for 2 large eggs. Although if you want some sugar eggs won't work for you.4 -

I have stress eaten all week. Garbage!!! Over the course of 3 days, I have eaten an entire package of cookie dough. The good thing is.... it's gone now. The bad thing is - somewhere in the neighborhood of 2100 calories.
Time to figure out my stress eating as stress will ALWAYS be a part of life!!10 -

I LOVE that you check this, too! My goal is 26% by my birthday in September.6 -

Yes!!! I've learned that the number on the scale can vastly change. I'm more concerned about increasing muscle and decreasing Body Fat. The number on the scale will eventually catch up!
You can make 26% by September!! You got this!!5 -
Good news... I came back to work from being remote teaching, and my colleague asked, "did you lose weight?" I was so happy inside- even though it's only 8 pounds, it made me even more motivated.15

You should be proud...8lbs lost is better than 8lbs gained!!! Slow and steady!!!!

That is so awesome!! 8 lbs is a lot4 -

So interesting that I came on here to comment about my couple of days of feeding my emotions and your post above was the first that came up on my screen...I HEAR you loud & clear. I am sitting here right now having just eaten a late lunch and trying to figure out the max calories I can have today without blowing another day's good intentions out the window and it hit me that this is exactly what I am doing ~ stress eating ~ and then wondering why and THEN figuring it is likely the stress of another restrictive move by our provincial government that has gone from another lockdown to putting our entire province into a 2nd state of emergency which will affect my work once again. Don't get me started!!!!!
Anyhoo, that is part of it, but most of it is the lack of sense that all of these restrictions makes when it is NOT working...The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over expecting a different result!!
SO, I cannot control that situation cause I have no say. What I need to do now that I have figured out what is fueling my emotional appetite is think of ways to address the stress I am feeling....THE PLAN is to do a 10 minute meditation as soon as I write this, THEN get in a hot tub and read some more of my current novel on the go. Good starting point...I also have a jigsaw puzzle newly started that will provide a good distraction for me.
That's my plan. When you figure out what is triggering you I'd love if you would share with us and your plan for redirecting yourself.
Thank you for sharing your struggle...it is such a great help to hear your challenge with emotional eating.6 -
@RubyRed427 Awesome results! I weigh in tomorrow.
My Monday No Alcohol Gin arrived today. When I checked the label I was thrilled to see it has ZERO calories. Of course, the tonic water does ( I don't like the diet). So I'm having my alcohol free happy hour and feeling pretty good about things. Having a light supper (soup, half a sandwich, a lean cuisine etc) seems to be working out well. I realize I am not as hungry at night as I thought I was when I was making big dinners.3 -

Zero calories! Always a good thing. Yes, light supper is the way people used to eat and we probably should go back to ....
Sounds like you're on the right track!2 -
Friday weigh in.
Weekends are tough. After a good week of small successes, I need to stay the course and keep my head down and plow through instead of rewarding myself, only to slide back a pound or two.
Still down 5.3 lbs. (2.17%) since 12/28! Exercise has been the key for me (besides tracking my calories). I read an article in the NYT recently that working out 300 minutes/week is key to losing weight. So, I have been tracking that and I'm averaging 358 minutes for the previous 7 days. Last week I didn't miss a day and burned 2602 calories for the week, averaging 372 calories and 53 minutes per workout. I like to mix it up between yoga, bike, strength and walking.
Fingers crossed for this weekend coming. Data drives my success.

HW 170
12/5 165
12/12 163.4
12/19 164
12/26 Merry Xmas
1/2 164.2
1/9 161.6
1/16 160.2
So in 6 weeks not quite 5 lbs. But considering all that is going on in the world I'll just have to be OK with that. I'ts nearly 10 from my highest weight (HW). I definitely feel better. Clothes don't really feel looser yet. 20.8 lbs to my goal.
