@rheddmobile @quilteryoyo big hugs. It totally understand. High risk here too, and it just amazes me how other people act. I too just want to stay healthy and avoid this thing. We had to get tested here last week because one of my sons friends mother tested positive and she had picked him up one day lat week from the park. Thankfully we are all negative. But it’s everywhere.
I did get a run in on New Years Day - 7.85 miles on the treadmill. @katharmonic @Tramboman I too feel it is sometimes just easier on the treadmill. I have a fan, can control the incline etc. And with the peloton app the runs have become enjoyable and the various workouts make it more fun, I do get outside still and enjoy it but at times does feel mor difficult. I recently ordered a foot pod that @PastorVincent recommended for treadmill use as my garmin is always off on distance and pace compared to the treadmill stats even if I calibrate after the treadmill run. It’s supposed to adjust the more runs you do, but I find it hasn’t yet. Hoping this foot pod will help.
Today is rest day, will do yoga later.

Hi all! I'm new to the challenge and looking forward to being a part of it. I've been running since August but I'm really hoping to kick it up for 2021. My goal for this month is to run at least 1.5 miles a day with a goal of 60 miles total for the month.11

Back from my 3k run. Short and sweet. Listening to my favourite podcasts - @runs_on_espresso has one that's a great listen for beginners (shameless plug lol)
I much prefer listening to podcasts than music now. Music would affect my pace too much, but podcasts dont. What are some of your favourite podcasts? I listen to a variety, Radio vs the Martians (pop culture), the running world podcast, brain food, case file (true crime) lol3 -
today's run was slow and steady. It is interesting to me to note that running at different paces tires and works different muscles. At least for me. After my PR 11 miles on Friday the top of my left hamstring was tired and a little sore right under my glutes. Then yesterday I ran a sprint 10K pretty much at about a min/mile faster pace. The top of the hamstring was fine but I noticed that the bottom of the same one behind the knee was a little sore and took most of the day to settle. Today I ran VERY slow and interesting my quads are sore from all the miles but neither part of the hamstring was upset. I also do some walking in the afternoon to stretch out.

And wow. It's really gotten crazy with Covid here in Tx too. I had been using cloth masks and ones from work but decided since I wasn't in the high queue for a vaccine shot that KM95 were now needed so have been using those on my trips to the grocery. I was delighted to get a call from my older brother who turns 65 this month that both him and his wife were able to get their first shot yesterday afternoon! I told him he should have invited me along too!

Well all I'm out for a while. Some of you that I'm friends with on other social media know what happened yesterday, but for those that don't here's my long story.
TLDR: broke my ankleSkip and I have always wanted to hike the Walls of Jericho. We decided to do it yesterday. It didn’t turn out exactly the way we wanted about mile 3.3ish I slipped and fell, I started to roll down towards a drop off to the creek/river. I immediately heard my ankle crack luckily I was able to grab the 2 branches before falling off (one of the pictures in the spoiler you'll see the branches I was able to hit to stop before falling off. By falling off I mean dropping 15 to 20 feet down into the ravine. When I actually stopped moving my feet where hanging off the edge.
It was so weird, it was muddy and I was standing no problem lifted one foot to step up about 4" and next thing I know my other foot slipped out under me in the mud. I reach for a tree but missed it and from there I was head over butt flipping. All I could hear was Skip screaming. When I stopped I immediately told her I was okay but my ankle was broken, she wanted to come down to me but I told no to stay there so she didn't slip off. I pulled down my sock to make sure no bones were coming through and tried to get my wits about myself. Obviously I was sick to my stomach and needed a minute to think.
I was lucky the trail was busy and so many people stopped. I was able to push myself almost all the way back up to the trail using my hands and pushing on my good foot. Then a guy named Dave who came running when they heard Skip screaming pulled me the rest of the way. When we realized there was no way I could walk out his wife and their twin 8 year olds started the 3 mile run back to the trailhead to get help since we had no cell service. The climb out is I think about 1,000 feet of elevation at least and most of the trail is single lane. David sat with Skip and I keeping us company and taking care of us for about 3.5 to 4 hours. I’m so sorry I didn’t get his full name or contact info. There’s no way I can thank them enough. People coming to us gave us an idea of where she was on the trail. A nurse, Beth, from Hartselle stopped and wrapped my ankle and countless people whose names l will never know stopped, offering food, drinks, jackets and ibuprofen.
Medevac arrived along with the rescue squads from Scottsboro Jackson County, Hytop and Highlands along with the sheriff department from Jackson County. They teamed up with Adam who was from Tennessee and hiking with his family to carry me to a clearing where a Kubota could take me to an ambulance. I decided on the trail not to take the helicopter out though I appreciated them getting there so fast, after Dave's wife called 911 there were there in like 10 minutes. FYI most insurance companies either don't cover or only cover 20% of a helicopter evac, which costs around $30,000 according to the medic. Since I wasn't bleeding and my injury wasn't life threatening there was no reason to fly. All the rescues were there 10 minutes later. They splinted my ankle and we tried for me to walk the rocky trail out to clearing. They didn't feel safe using the board they had to carry me because the trail was no narrow and the drop, they were afraid if the board tilted I would fall over and off. I held on to one EMT putting my weight on his back while another held my waist and helped to lift me as much as we could. After about 20 yards or so going up and down I was dizzy and we decided that wasn't going to work. Right then another squad came in with a basket type stretcher like they air lift with. The put me in there tight and I made them promise to let go of me if we started to go down the side, I didn't want anyone falling with me. By this time we had sent Skip off with Adam's wife and family and Dave to hike back out to the trailhead.
We got to a Kubota near the clearing and they transferred me to it. Note the selfie of just some of the people who helped carry me out. That ride was crazy, over rocks, like 90 degree drops into the river and back out the other side, it was crazy (and kinda ouchie) but after about 30 minutes I was back at the trailhead where there were a bunch of people waiting for me along with police, more rescue people and people we met on the trail. Once at the trailhead I decided to wait for Skip to drive me to hospital. She was hiking out with Adam’s wife Kimsby and their boys and Dave. The EMT who would ride with me to the hospital in the ambulance said they were great with taking me but I thought it was a waste of their resources. While we were down there we gave one girl my friend Lynda's phone number and they called her to tell he what happened. I thought if I went by ambulance they could drive up and one take my car home so Skip didn't have to drive. When I talked to her (she was now with another friend of mine) they were calling all the area hospitals trying to find me. Skip took me to the hospital, of course couldn't come in, so she dropped me off and went home took a shower and took care of the dogs and went to Lynda's to wait for me. They feed her dinner and when I called (like 2.5 hours later) they came to get me.
So it's definitely broken, the doctor said the fibula on the right side and that I pulled apart the joint of the ankle on the left. Tomorrow I'll call my orthopedic doctor who operated on my foot in 2019 and see what he says. Of course it's my right foot so I can't drive. The pain isn't awful, more uncomfortable because the splint is so heavy. I have to be honest I truly thought I was going off the cliff so I'm thanking my lucky stars it's only a broken ankle and lots of cuts and bruises. My one knee is beat up and I have cuts all over including one on my forehead and my one arm is just black and blue all the way up and down and swollen in spots.
Of course I'm so upset I was so happy to have to running back to longer runs and more miles. I have a bunch of races set up for early this year including a mileage challenge that starts tomorrow and a the monthly Half Marathon challenge. The RD told me they will count my knee scooter miles ha ha. My friend dropped a knee scooter off this morning which is much easier than crutches.
Things that were funny great about this. I instinctively turned off my watch after I stopped falling WTH is with that? ha ha. Beth, the nurse, was on the way back from the "wall" and sent me some pictures since I never got there. I don't think I can mentally ever go there again, at least not for a long time. It wasn't a hard trail, I've run on so much harder just bad luck with some slippery mud.
I'm just so thankful I didn't go off the cliff, what would have definitely left a mark.

OMG, @skippygirlsmom, I was so sorry to see on Strava that you had broken your ankle and reading your story it sounds so harrowing. But it seems like you handled it so calmly! I can't imagine the pain and the ordeal you went through to get out. It's obviously always a risk with hiking (and even running of course) and it's just a freak thing that you slipped. Thank goodness it wasn't so much worse and you had the presence of mind to stop yourself. (And then stop your watch, which is funny now that you're safe).
I hope you heal well and quickly. Obviously not the start of the year you hoped for. Hugs to you and Skip for your scare and best wishes for recovery and rehab.3 -

We do take some things for granted when we set targets though agree with @quilteryoyo that setting them with positivity is not a bad thing. Covid has gone off the scale in the UK with this new variant spreading so quickly we should have totally cancelled Christmas as it will now bite us in the a$s big time. The reason I ran up the big hill yesterday was to keep away from people and I have to take the muddy horrible routes just to not be near people as there are so, so many strolling along, stopping for chats, taking up the whole gawd damn path, having dogs running lose and generally being a pain in the backside. Everyone should be encouraged to walk just do it with your brain switched on.
The reason the second vaccine dose in the UK has moved from 21 days to 12 weeks is they found the more significant protection is in the first dose and they want to get everyone the first dose before starting on the second round. Not great for those expecting the second dose though at least based on the science which is quite rare lately.
Needed a rest day after the climb yesterday however it was so nice I decided to ride to the seafront.

That story was just harrowing. I am SO SO sorry this happened. Just a freak accident but it sounds like it could have been so so much worse if you had not had such presence of mind. It also sucks that due to $$$ for the air evac you had to take such a harrowing hike out.
Here's hoping your recovery is uncomplicated and you do not require surgery..

@polskagirl01 Nice run and cold feet adventure. I don't mind getting my feet in cold water, if I don't have to stay too long. I don't think I would be able to do a complete Polar Bear dip though. Love the pictures. So cool that you have been to our starting point.
@Avidkeo I haven't tried listening to podcasts yet. I do find that music affects my pace and cadence and stride length. But, not really being a "world class" runner, that really doesn't matter to me. I will have to try podcasts in the future.
Oh no @skippygirlsmom ! I'm so sorry that happened to you, but, like you said, so thankful for the branches that stopped you from the big drop off and for the other hikers and first responders who stopped to help and get you the care you needed. I cried when you said you made the EMT people promise to let you go if they started to slip. That is so sweet and caring. I hope you heal quickly and it isn't too painful! FYI, I looked up the Walls of Jericho Trail on Google. This is the first sentence of the first review from yesterday..."Extremely difficult due to mud. We saw at least 4 people fall - one had to wait several hours for medical attention." I'm assuming that was you.

@polskagirl01 Thanks for more dragon pic! I'm not a fan of cold water at all - I barely go swimming here in the summer even though I live only minutes from a beautiful beach
@skippygirlsmom I saw on Strava you'd broken your ankle, but I didn't realise it was such a dangerous fall. I'm so glad you managed to stop yourself with those branches. Hearing about how all the strangers rallied around to help you restores a little bit of my faith in humanity. Wishing you a speedy recovery5 -

Short run today, the plan called for 3.2, but my Zombies Run episode was 4.2 so that's what I did. For some reason my GPS didn't work for my run so I don't have any map/elevation or segments on Strava which is kind of annoying. Just as I finished my run I got the 'GPS ready' beep on my watch which was decidedly unhelpful by that stage.5 -

Based on what the dr said, you are likely to need surgery. When you rupture the medial ligaments (on the inside of your ankle) then the joint is very unstable and they have to put a screw in to fix it. I'd be interested to hear what your ortho Dr says, and as always, I love xrays (wink wink)!3 -

There is a weird thing going on with the GPS. I think its related to US time because my new years day run was fine, but my long run on Saturday was offset to the west by a couple of hundred metres haha. Today's run however was spot on. Apparently the solution is to use the GPS for an hour. Either use it and be happy with the messed up map, or start a run and just leave it going for an hour. It's enough to get the GPS back on track. Someone earlier posted a link to a far better description than that.

Marathon Talk - they get a lot of good interviews, very good for learning more about the sport and hearing nice UK accents, and they also talked a lot about Parkrun when it was happening. Don't be scared away by "marathon" in the title - yes, you can still listen if you aren't a marathoner
Trail Runner Nation - great for trail running, lots of talk about ultra racing
Marathon Training Academy - great for beginners, even if not doing marathons5 -
Oh @skippygirlsmom I am so sorry! That sounds so traumatic and I am so glad you are relatively ok.
We are always here for you if you need to vent @rheddmobile. I know how you feel. Here in Texas no one seems to be taking it seriously. Especially not where I live.

I ran 9 miles this morning. It was a nice day. It was pretty and sunny, but a little windy. It was about 50°F when I headed out. I wore shorts and a t-shirt. I started to wear my sleeves but decided against it at the last minute. Then for about the first 4 or so miles I kind of wished I had worn them. But when I turned back towards home and not into the wind I definitely didn't need them. I kind of varied my usual route and when I got to the turn for home I realized I would be at 8.75 miles (I was planning 8) so naturally I had to go an extra block to get to an even 9. Although my hip felt a little tight after the run so I hope I didn't over do it. But tomorrow will be a rest day and the hip feels ok now. It doesn't really hurt and not exactly in the same spot as before so I think it is probably a combination of paranoia and my shoes have over 400 miles on them.

Hugs to everyone dealing with idiotic people not taking this Covid thing seriously. It's been almost a year, and people still don't think it is a big deal? WTF??
Got in a HM this afternoon. Like @Tramboman and others, it seemed harder after being on the treadmill for the last few days. Usually the treadmill feels harder for me. Maybe the 20mph wind had something to do with it. Had to take 3 short walk breaks, but still managed a sub 2hr HM. Felt slow, but guess that is what progress feels like 😉

Thank you all very much for your good thoughts for a speedy recovery. I had to laugh at my boss I told him I was going to work from home and he joked if there’s no pictures it did t happened lol. I sent him the pictures and he was like holy *kitten*. Again I appreciate you all.
