Thanks for setting us up @martaindale.
Don't know what my 2021 goals are yet, but just wanted to jump on here before the end of the year so I don't lose the link again.
I will commit to a 100 miles for January to keep my streak alive.5 -
Happy New Year! I would like to participate in the challenge. So, all I have to do is post in this thread what I did if I don't use the app mentioned in the original post? My goal is to run at least a mile without feeling like giving up.9

Welcome! You can participate how ever you like. I like your goal. A lot start with couch to 5K (3 miles) which starta with walk/run. It's a great way to get started, though obviously a longer distance than you are going for.
We have runners of all distances and abilities. And all of us started where you are.5 -
Well, 2021 got off to a bit of a hairy start for me. Today was a scheduled rest day but I love running on New Year’s Day because it’s always so quiet so I thought I’d sneak a short one in. This morning was a stunner too - sunshine, blue skies, crisp air with the promise of it being a stinker as soon as the sun got up properly. Not a breath of wind either - the water in the harbour was like glass - as I said, a stunner. However, as I was putting my shoes on at 7am, my brother phoned (never a good sign that early in the morning) to tell me my father had just had a massive heart attack and a helicopter was currently landing on his lawn to fly him to Waikato Hospital (600km from his hometown). I was a bit stunned and short on information so took the opportunity to use my run to process it all. Ended up doing about 12.5km. When I got home my sister and I arranged to drive down to the hospital (about 1.5 hours) to see how he was doing. By the time we got there, he was out of surgery to have a stent inserted and was joking with his nurse. A lucky escape for him - he was fortunate to collapse in front of his wife, rather than out in a paddock somewhere, and was receiving medical attention within 15 minutes. He should be fine and will be flown home tomorrow or Sunday (public holidays are delaying a few things). I’ve just gotten back home and am now shattered. I could have done without this kind of dramatic start to the year, but at least it turned out ok.16

Happy New year to you all! I'm off to a flying start on day 1 😁 icy as hell here this morning, was more like Bambi at times. Still I managed it in under 40 minutes and I'm very pleased.
For some newbies on here I completed C25K on 19th Dec and this running is still new to me too.

Happy new year everyone.
Yikes @ContraryMaryMary glad he's ok!
My grandparents have been for their first you-know-what vaccination this morning.
My brain would like to run today but my body is telling me it's too old for late nights so guess I'll stick to yoga and maybe a walk later.

Happy new year! @ContraryMaryMary sorry to hear about your Dad, thank goodness he wasn’t alone!
Still struggling with Covid fatigue here so no New Year run for me. This makes me really sad, even though I know it’s only temporary. Can’t wait to feel better and start 2021 as I mean to go on!
I’m not going to set a mileage goal for January. I’m going to just commit to get out there as soon as I am better and to try and end the month back to some fitness8 -
My goals for the year are to complete the Run the Year with my husband with a combo of running/walking for us both and to participate in the Run the World challenge. I signed up this morning, so I’m sure it is a little late to add Georgia to the map, but that’s fine. I also plan to maintain my weight, trying to keep within +/- 3lbs.
To complete my half of the Run the Year, my monthly goal will be 85 miles a month.
I’m on call currently, so I am going to try my best to get in what miles I can between work and the rain for the next few days.6 -
Glad you Dad is okay @ContraryMaryMary
Good luck on your HM today @martaindale
On the run the world challenge I have submitted the map details to Challenge Hound who make the map from my details.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!5 -
@ContraryMaryMary Oh no! So sorry to hear about your dad, but glad he wasn't alone, got medical attention quickly, and is going to be okay. That is a rough way to start the new year for sure.
@Faebert I was fortunate that my fatigue was mild - might not have really noticed had I not known I had CoVID, and went away after a week. So, I hope yours goes away quickly!

1-1 5k treadmill + resistance bands
January Total: 5k
January Goal: 140k
Today was a scheduled rest day, but you don't get a badge for resting, so I did some treadmill thanks to last night's freezing rain. Might as well start the new year by breaking the rules.
@ContraryMaryMary Happy things worked out OK (relatively speaking) for your dad.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

Happy New Year everybody!
@TheMrWobbly Just joined the challenge!
@ContraryMaryMary That sounds crazy. Glad your dad is doing well. Hope you get some rest.
Sign me up for 100km in January.7 -

@ContraryMaryMary Rough start to a new year indeed!
My dad had something similar happen - heart stopped and he fell over, but in his case it was a bad valve rather than a heart attack. And like your dad he was very fortunate, my mom started chest compressions immediately and the EMTS were there within 7 minutes. He made a full recovery and lived another 8 years.
Just wanted to say, if your dad seems loopy as heck in the short term, don’t panic, the meds they put heart patients on do that to many people. My dad was hallucinating elves hiding under the hospital furniture and had no short term memory. We were panicking about brain damage but fortunately a kind cardiac nurse reassured us it was normal! And it was, as soon as he came off the meds he was back to his old self.5 -
@dreamer12151 @quilteryoyo @martaindale Thanks! I think I'll give the Garmin coaching program a little while longer - I really like how it's adaptive to your recent runs as far as pace/effort goals go, and that each run is uploaded to my watch. But if the actual program doesn't get more balanced soon with the % of long run then I'm going back to Hal
@polskagirl01 You too! I joined the Strava group when I was active on here last year so I've tried to keep up with the group that way
@Avidkeo It's the Hawke's Bay marathon - usually it's in May, but got postponed to September, then when Auckland went back to Level 3 they cancelled 2020 and went back to May 2021. Love the pics of Mt Taranaki
@ContraryMaryMary Phew! So glad your Dad is OK. I also love running on NY Day, but it was anything but quiet here - SO many people out enjoying the beautiful morning.PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

Welcome! Fantastic goal and exactly where I started! You got this!!
@Cricketmad88 Welcome to you too!!1 -
Good Afternoon everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Checking in and @ContraryMaryMary only us runners would totally get how you got the news and then HAD to go for your run. So glad this story has a happy ending but OMG what a heartpumper.
Today's run was kind of fun. I had planned 7 but evidently I dressed well for the 30's weather and felt pretty strong so it became one of my adventure runs. That's where I just sort of run thru the neighborhood and explore new places and streets - mostly still checking out the Xmas decorations of course. It was definitely not my most speedy run and typically I don't do speed well after a day off . I have been on a tiny cut for 2 weeks trying to drop a pound so I could be faster so my energy is not at tip top yet.
I did manage a PR distance of 11 miles!!!! Previous best was 10.25 last month. I think joining RTE2021 and a little bit of internal team competition also helped. As always when I push a little further I will give y'all the true update tomorrow when I see how recovery goes.

@ContraryMaryMary oh no! I'm glad your dad is OK. Thank goodness for the helicopters and waikato! Honestly the number of our patients who end up there is amazing. Their cardiology suite is amazing I hear.
@kristymn ahh yes I remember that happening. So frustrating but then we are luckier than almost the entire rest of the world so...
@TheMrWobbly you are amazing! What is your masters in?
Its raining this morning for my long run and I loved every second of it. My shoes definitely felt heavy at the end, I'm sure their weight doubled from the amount of water they collected. I did 9.5k. So so tempted to push it out to 10 but my goal is to stick to the plan. Calf feels good. The faintest hint of a tightness, I think this is a sign of things as I continue to push out the distances.

@ContraryMaryMary So so sorry to hear about your dad! But also relieved to hear he is doing better. Hugs to you, your dad and all your family!
@KristinScott8 Looks like you and I are on similar playing grounds! @Avidkeo gave some good advice. I already have an app on my phone that I was using a while ago that I am backing up to start on week 1, day 1 next week. (Zen Labs Couch to 10K, in case you are looking for one, but there are others out there) I have no time limits for myself, and if I feel like repeating a week here & there, I will. If you use tech, joins us on Strava, both in the group or individuals. Try not to pressure yourself, and HAVE FUN with it!! If you want to see how people log their runs here, then you can check out last month's thread. Just make your run (or run/walk) and post.6
