Less Alcohol - JANUARY 2021 - One Day At A Time

I really would love a few glasses of wine, but not considering it an option. I should just enjoy being done with this stressful workweek and indulge in ... the couch? Bed early and finally exercising tomorrow after dressing for it and not doing it all week. Maybe I can get into a good movie with an unhappy ending (always makes me feel like my life isn't so bad--which is why I never watch Hallmark).
@dawnbgethealthy People are ice skating at the pond down the street (even though we've had some 40's temps--yikes!) I'm tempted to buy ice skates, but when I bought x-country skiis for Christmas, it poured.
I'm going to do something new and out of my comfort zone this wknd. Don't know what yet, but I'll think of something.
8/8 AF days9 -
@mainelylisa -> "I'm going to do something new and out of my comfort zone this wknd. Don't know what yet, but I'll think of something."
Interesting🤔! All depends if your in W.B. or Rockwood this weekend as to what your outlandish event should be.
Happy AF

Welcome to our thread @Amanda_Brit_Expat. I too was shocked when I first found out what is considered a standard size drink and how many drinks per week is considered or recommended by health officials.
I always thought I was fine because I could drink many drinks before reaching the black out zone. Now I know better.4 -
Hope your tummy is feeling better @globalhiker. I was feeling the same stress from the tv and the news. That is when I went up to throw some weights around.6

4 AF / 5 Days.
Goal: 5 AF / 7 Days
Fantastic. You go GIRL.

I did not post a goal for myself this month as I was just directed to this thread. Seriously I can not thank you enough for pointing me in this direction. I have been on other forum before and no one will address this elephant in the room and if I brought it up it was...oh you can do it blah blah, having never been there /done that.
I am proud to say I am now 5 days AF which is a huge accomplishment for me. Thank you all for the support and being so honest with the struggle
We ALWAYS set the elephant in the middle of the floor for all to see. You are very welcome. Great job4 -
Unbelievable how bloated I am almost 2 weeks after being AF and recording everything. I was losing weight in the fall, not since.6

12 days AF (tonite will make it 13) but really really super in the mood for wine, which annoys me... I think it's been a long week and my family was driving me nuts most of the day. Deep breath. The struggle is real. Part of me feels what's wrong with one nite, the other half of me doesn't want to break my streak and complete my Dry January.9

Well my DH called to ask, are we still not drinking alcohol? I said we can't drink what is not in the house. He was on his way home from work and was stopping at the local store....so what does he do???brings home cheeto's to munch on....sheesh for that he should drive back to the store for some adult beverages! It is taking all my will power to not ask him to go back11
-
DH grabbed 6 bottles of wine (discount you know for 6 LOL) after work. I asked that we only open one tonight and he agreed.
2 glasses of wine with sauté speckled trout with crawfish etouffee on top and roasted broccoli on the side.9 -
Day 8 done.
8/8 days AF
I was aiming for the whole month, but husband and I are planning a home date and will have a drink.
If I only drink when he does it will be a huge accomplishment.8 -
I'm cutting back, at least. And I didn't start jan1...but you have to start somewhere right? I'm having other health issues that may be exacerbated by alcohol and caffeine, so I'm trying to cut back on alcohol AND coffee. I'm limited to 1 lg coffee(3tbs of 1/3 decaff) and then a chai tea bag. In the evening, a spice herbal tea instead of wine. Unfortunately, I'm also cutting back on chocolate and carbonation as well. Wish me luck!
AF started Tuesday 1/5...so 4 days AF8 -
Yay, I didnt drink but boo I ended up WAY over my calorie goals. I will take the wins of not drinking and also logging all my food, even if over. Tomorrow will be better about calories and exercise 🙂8

Since I have been on here for maybe 2 years now, I wanted to mention something with my full sincere honesty. For anyone struggling with too many new year's resolutions (I am with dieting right now), it is a very good idea to set a very super-small, easy, do-able goal. Seriously. Just do it.
This is how one develops self confidence and one strengthen's oneself. Over time you will start to believe in the power your logical self has. When I started, my goals were (to me) almost silly. I cut down, ounce by ounce. Timid, scared of change. Very slowly. Until one day @MissMay nudged me and said I could really just go AF. It worked.

I stopped at 2 glasses of wine as I posted last night. DH opened a second bottle of wine and finished that as well. Sigh.7
-
I'm headed to Play it Again Sports to buy ice skates. May the force (and ideally a walker) be with me!!!10
-
Maybe I should buy some Depends and layer them up.8

@mainelylisa
Oh, please take a photo for me of people skating on the pond!!
We are 8 days into a thaw, nowhere to skate outside safely here right now : - (
I was out X-Country skiing only twice before the thaw. It looks like one more week until we get back to good temperatures and some snow. I walked on icy water on the trails yesterday, not ideal but at least I got outside.6 -
New month, new year.
I am Dawn, I live in SE BC
I will post with my usual diary style to keep track of my AF days.
Keeping to my usual goal of 16-20 AF days per month, which is manageable for me and doesn't put too much pressure on me.
January 01 - AF - Had champagne last night, a bit fuzzy this morning but then went for a skate and felt better. Couldn't start off the new month with a drinks day.
January 02 - AF - Kind of felt like continuing the holiday drinks for a couple more days, had to use willpower lol.
January 03 - AF - Planning on AF tomorrow too. I am trying to get rid of a couple of holiday pounds, and not having drinks makes a big difference for me in that regard.
January 04 - AF - Too busy and long of a workday tomorrow to be having drinks tonight. Thankfully one of my jobs is in Kimberley BC, so I will be able to grab a quick skate while up that mountain : - )
January 05 - AF - I didn't get home from work until almost 10pm and didn't get dinner until 11pm. A drink would have been nice, but I will save that for a day when I have time to enjoy it and not be so tired.
January 06 - AF - Pretty much ditto to yesterday, very long work day. Food was more important to getting into me than alcohol. OMG, my longest AF streak so far!!
January 07 - AF - Opted for more food rather than alcohol calories tonight. I was going hard for a few days and kind of running on fumes so wanted to re-feed. I have no intention of a dry January, this is just a crazy record 7AF days in a row for me.
Friday Jan 08 - Drinks. No regrets on that, they weren't stress induced.
Rolling total 7AF day out of 8 days10 -
@Lilylady3k
I always enjoy hearing about the things that you are cooking : - )
You are doing such a great job of moderating, so many days of only 1 glass of wine!!4 -

You can just use a chair : - )
So excited about this!!
You know that I need photos!!!!!4 -

I love everything that you write.
I appreciate the thought that you put into what small changes look like, what is important, and what is uplifting.5 -

Look at this thread UNFIRE!
I love the energy, the posts, the unity, the honesty and accountability.
@Lilylady3k you should become a curb side catering service. Because I am drooling when you post what you
are making.
Thank you @globalhiker I hope it was a nudge and not me pushing you. You have made such great progress since Fall of 2018. (Oh sure I know dates.)
We've come a long way group.
Trials and errors, sure who doesn't have them?
There was no instruction book given to me when growing up on how NOT to let booze get out of control. Together we will figure it out.

Personal post *trigger warning*
Day 9 AF here. I think getting off the bottle has really helped me get my head above water. I lost a pregnancy in September and I have been in a depressed rut. Today I did really fun makeup again, I love makeup, but I have only done it like 3 times since September ( I also packed on an extra 10lbs). It's nice to finally start to feel like me again. It's also the same time I lost my 1200 day logging streak. Up to 43 days now.
Trying to get healthy and lose some weight before we try for our last baby. Can't believe we are at the end of our baby making journey. But I'm 35, so guess it's about time to move on.11 -
Good morning to all or good day to which time zone you are in.
It was a close call last night and took my will power but AF day 6 done and proud. If you have told me a week ago I could go this many days in a row + on a weekend I would have laughed. I feel pretty good, even did a workout this am.
I did indulge in those cheetos DH brought home in lieu of alcohol though but only a small ramekin full. I did log them and was still under my calorie goal for the day without the adjustment from exercise. However there was a bump up in the scale and I am attribute that to sodium.
thank you everyone for being here9 -
@CryingBlue I'm so very sorry for your loss and so very happy for you getting back to you. And a healthier you at that! You are doing great. I really think the first week of an alcohol break is the hardest.
@lmlmrn You are on an awesome streak and please don't be too strict on yourself with food while taking an alcohol break. I echo the thank-you to everyone here.
@globalhiker & @MissMay Indeed--the power of habit. I think Dry January or any alcohol break helps us not only break an everyday habit, it helps us start to form new habits that never would happen otherwise. Maybe even ice skating. Which has started from inspiration from @dawnbgethealthy ...

Way to GO @mainelylisa.
You made a statement for a GOAL and you my dear had follow through. I applaude you.
How lovely that picture is....shows so much joy. 💓
Have fun with your new ice skates.7 -
@CryingBlue very sorry to hear about your loss.. What a strong person you are to take on all this. Very inspiring. You desrve a spa day....many spa days. We will join in with you. Great AF streak.
@lmlmrn close calls happen, and so do slips. Glad you were able to avoid your drink devil and have snacks on top of that while still making your calorie goal.
We appreciate you as well.😊6
