Thanks to everyone for the February birthday wishes!!!!!3

Tried a little bit of new route and made it more or less an out and back (with a scenic detour up a hill) because I saw that I would be running out of sidewalk on a busy road and didn't see a quick way around that section. But 12-ish km was perfect for today. Stuff was going wrong all morning, and the run was a good "reset" to my day.
@Tramboman does your username have anything to do with the trombone? I was thinking Happy Birthday on the trombone would be appropriate, but I don't have a trombone and couldn't play that song anyway. I'm not sure I even remember how to play a scale, from brass class all those years ago in college. Voice majors didn't get much in the way of instrumental training.8 -
@Teresa502 That hike sounds amazing. I've heard hiking is really hard there, but I'm sure worth it!
Welcome @OneMooreMile and @pfeiferlindsey !
@rheddmobile Glad your hip is feeling better and good luck on staying injury free!
@ContraryMaryMary It sounds like you are having fun with the ballet classes. I can't even imagine the different muscles that are used doing that vs running.
@polskagirl01 Glad you got your run in. Hope the day is going better than it started.3 -
3-1 7k slow
March Total: 7k
March Goal: 150k
Mostly cloudy, mid 30s F, with a wicked wind from the west that was especially bad coming across the golf course. Heard some robins; saw a fox squirrel for the first time in a long time, and I SAW EARTHWORMS!!!!! They had succumbed to the cold, but they were worms nonetheless.
@polskagirl01 That's a nice thought, but it's really a play on Rambo.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)6 -
My March goal is 137 miles, including completing the Yeti Challenge on the 27th and planning my transition to training for a faster 5k instead of distance for the hot, hot summer.10
-
I need to run. Instead of a mileage goal, I'm going to try to run 10 times this month.15
-
Great goals @noblsheep and @runs_on_espresso they sound very sensible!
@Tramboman of all the creatures to see, earthworms lol
@ContraryMaryMary ballet sounds hard enough without being via zoom!
Early start for me, 530am. It's getting so dark at that time of day now. It's officially autumn here, so daylight saving will come to an end in a month time. It's been an odd summer for us, just never really started. Very strange.
Today was a non-running day, so stationery bike and weights. I stopped half way through the weights cause I just wasn't into it and I didn't want to tempt an injury by going half heartedly.8 -
ContraryMaryMary wrote: »So March begins with a rest day but I did have my second ever ballet class. Not quite as much fun as it was via Zoom but still hilarious and rather challenging - running fitness definitely helps for the jumps but turn out uses a bunch of butt muscles running doesn’t. Ouch.
Turn out is always a challenge. If you rock back on your heels and turn put it helps you settle into your natural turn out and go a bit further. You can work on it but you may not be able to change it much.

I wasn't sure if I would bother setting a mileage goal for March, I've been struggling lately with just getting out the door so ANY run is a good thing at this point!
01/03... 5.08
02/03... 8.05
Total 13.13 / 150 km
I had grand plans to run 20km - it's my 40th birthday today (2nd March) and I liked that math, but I seemed to like sleep more today so only had time for 8km. Maybe I'll try and make up for it this weekend.
@katharmonic Thanks for setting us up
@hanlonsk Congratulations on the job, how exciting!
@happyness4me Welcome! I second the suggestion for Couch25k, it's a great plan to start running
@TheMrWobbly I hope the knee gets better soon
@OneMooreMile and @pfeiferlindsey Welcome5 -
So disappointed @Tramboman isn't a trombone player. That was the image I had in my head too.
Fancy taking up a new hobby?7 -
3/1-2.25
March Goal-2.25/60
2021 Goal-140.75/634 miles
January-81 miles
February Goal-54.5 Miles6 -
@polskagirl01 That's a nice thought, but it's really a play on Rambo.

Happy Birthday @kristymn!2

3/1 - 2.75 miles - 3.6 mph - Treadmill walk
March total: 2.75/62 miles
I spent most of the day trying to not get into something I couldn't stop at a moments notice because I was waiting to find out if my cousin was going to be dismissed today AND if I would need to go pick him up if he was. Turns out because his blood pressure had dropped really low yesterday and was still a little low today, they decided to keep him another night. Also, the VA did approve EMS to transport him back to the assisted living, when he's ready, so I won't have to drive the hour to do that. That's good news, but didn't come until after 3, so I had a very unproductive day.
It's a rainy, gloomy, cool day - one where the temperatures have been dropping all day. No outdoor walk for me - plus waiting on the phone calls wouldn't allow it. I did go down and get in a treadmill walk. I did a ladder from 3.5 up to 3.8 and then back down to 3.3 mph - walking for 5 minutes on each level.8 -
@kristymn Happy birthday!!
@ContraryMaryMary I have plenty of hobbies already, but will keep the trombone in mind for when I get older.
Then I can change my screen name to Tromboneman.7 -
So here’s a monthly question promoted by @Tramboman and his non-trombone. What images do the various user names in this group inspire in your head.
I always assumed @quilteryoyo was one of those mad keen quilters, but apparently not so much...
With @polska_girl I think polka dancing rather than Polish person...
And I always read @noblsheep as Noble Sheep and picture a very dignified sheep!8 -
For March I want to build on my February goal of completing Couch to 5k.
March goals:
Run 100kms (62 miles)
Build to 5mi long run by the end of the month.
Good luck to all of you and I'll see you at the finish line.8 -
I'm starting to train for a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike which is the first part of June so I expect to do more hiking this month. I will set my running goal at 100 miles.
Welcome @happyness4me, @OneMooreMile @pfeiferlindsey !
Congrats on the new job and the move @hanlonsk!
Happy birthday @kirstymn!

Started March off with a treadmill run before strength class. March is being true to it's in like a lion ways - snow squalls and high winds today. It dropped at least 20 degrees from a high around 40 early this morning and feels like 0 degrees now. Not nice. But I see 50 degrees in the long term forecast into next week, which is crazy. Anyhow, the run was fine, nothing much to report there except finally I allowed myself enough time before class to actually finish 3 miles.9 -
March Goal: 100 Miles
3/1: 1.32 miles
1.32/100 miles completed for March
Monday is usually a rest day for me, but I am signed up for the Run the Year streaker challenges so I am going to do a run streak for the month of March. So I ran 1.32 miles this morning before yoga. It was cold and almost rainy, but I got it done. I think it will be colder in the morning but not wet so hopefully it will be a nice run.
Happy Birthday @kyrstymn

LOL. Sheep can be quite dignified when they're not... chewing. Or otherwise looking ridiculous. This what you had in mind?
@Avidkeo - there was a character in the cartoon Battle of the Planets called Keyop and I always get the image of that character bouncing around in excitement when I read that.
I need to +1 to @Tramboman and the trombone.6 -

+1 Noble Sheep
Also +1 @quilteryoyo - My grandmother used to make these fabric circle thingies she called "yo-yos", then would make wall hangings and pillows with them. I think there's a huge garbage bag of them somewhere waiting for me to turn them into a quilt. Turns out there are a few of us quilters in the group!
My username is tricky too, because I live in Poland and speak the language (hence the "polska" - Polish for Poland) but am an American (hence "girl" being in English). I don't think I've ever danced a polka, but it looks fun!
@ContraryMaryMary I wonder if you do a lot of gardening.
@katharmonic is surely musical in my mind.
@shanaber seems like some sort of teddy bear ("Shana Bear") 🐻
I don't know what a keo is, so @Avidkeo in my mind turns into Avid Kiwi (bird, or person)
And then there's @kgirlhart which reads like "heart" to me3 -

Exactly!3 -
Did a preview run of the 10k off road course at Shelby Farms - ran about half, walked about half. It was, as predicted, very flooded, since we had more than 3” of rain in a single hour last night on already saturated ground, and pretty churned up from the race on Sunday, which someone on Facebook described as “a mudfest.” So it was already a mudfest on Saturday, and then we got torrential rain overnight.
This course is always muddy but I haven’t seen it quite this wet before - parts which are usually dry were ankle deep water, and the muddy parts were just a swamp. Several cross trails had turned into temporary creeks, and there’s one bit where a bridge across a creek has turned into what looks more like a boat landing!
My hip felt fine starting out this morning, but I didn’t want to push it too much, so we basically ran the easy bits and walked the hard bits. We used a route based on the race director’s Strava run from the race. It was mostly the same as the posted course from previous years except they wussed out and ran on the road in two places instead of through the woods next to the road. We figured this out AFTER doing the technical bit through the woods. We were running the course as run in previous years, when I said, “Shouldn’t we be seeing muddy footprints from the race?” And lo and behold, our Strava run was offset from the race one by about thirty feet, since those lazy people were running up on the nice dry gravel berm!
My hip started complaining about mile 5 so we walked the rest. The hip isn’t bothering me now, though, and I am much less concerned about a stress fracture due to the sort of thing that makes it hurt - impact doesn’t bother it, but it gets achy from going up stairs. It also isn’t really hurting so much as letting me know it’s still a thing. Pretty sure I strained it when I was trying to get out from under my barbell the other day. As long as it continues to improve I am going to be mellow about it.
We were out late - the sun started to go down before we finished - and we saw so many deer! Also, the sunset was truly spectacular.
Planning on racing it for real on Wednesday or maybe Thursday, depending on how recovered my legs feel and how much rain we get Tuesday night.
We call this stretch the Slough of Despond. I wish there was some way of conveying through a photo that this is knee deep sucking mud and no part is solid ground for a hundred meters either direction. Stepping off the trail doesn’t help, since what appears to be solid ground is actually the tops of rough cut stubble in a foot of standing water. I have seen athletic looking grown men give up and decide to quit the race here, and more than one person haplessly searching for their shoes!
This bridge does go all the way across when it’s not flooded!7 -

Yup. Love my garden. One of my main reasons for moving to the country is so I can have a massive garden.

Ran 2 miles last night after working late. It was almost dark, so I pushed hard to get it done quickly.
I love the commentary on everyone’s names, and the ideas I’ve had for everyone pretty much match up to what has been in my head. I wish now I’d come up with a more unique name.
Happy Birthday, @kirstymn!

100% agree! I am just not that creative.
6 treadmill miles to start off March.

@ContraryMaryMary I used to quilt a lot. I really need to get back into it. Thanks for the push. I agree with you on @polskagirl01 and @noblsheep . Dancing and the queen sheep. @katharmonic - Kathy playing the harmonica @rheddmobile - I picture a red car @ContraryMaryMary - The garden nursery rhyme They may be more I think of later - when I see the names. LOL
Nice run @katharmonic ! The temperature dropped here all day too, but not that far! You never know what March is going to bring.
@rheddmobile I'm glad your hip is doing better. I don't think I would enjoy all of that mud. Hope you do well on your race day.

3-1 7k slow
3-2 7k easy
March Total: 14k
March Goal: 150k
Sunny, low 20s F, and a light breeze from the northwest today. Saw a red winged blackbird and a song sparrow, but no worms...
I don't know if we become our names, or if our names become us.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

Sorry to disappoint, but I do not play the harmonica , nor am I particularly musical (although that doesn't stop me from singing at the top of my lungs in my car). It's job-related nerdiness - harmonics are multiples of the fundamental frequency of a sound. My area is more hearing and acoustics of speech than music.
I've puzzled about @rheddmobile for sure.
@ContraryMaryMary so your garden grows well, but are you quite contrary? You seem nice . Also, I've just read a rather dark interpretation of that nursery rhyme on wikipedia related to Bloody Mary. Hmmm.

More treadmill! Just a short one today. The Tuesday two-fer at the gym with yoga and the run this morning and I'll be back for mace class tonight. In the meantime, I better get working!
