Less Alcohol ~ JUNE 2021 ~ One Day At A Time

@globalhiker I do have to keep the dust down in my house and I know there are things that I can not tolerate. One of them being fragrances. I make my own bar and liquid soap for showering, shampoo, washing hands etc. My laundry soap same thing I have to make my own so they are fragrance free. Like you I am hypersensitive to drugs, any and all kinds. Example, I had to go through 7 different types of Blood Pressure med's before we found one that did not 1. Make my tongue swell, 2. Make me feel like I was having a heart attack 3. Give me a constant tickle in the back of my throat (this one is common) and the list goes on.
I will however examine my food intake. I really pretty normal, very little dairy, not a lot of meat including seafood. Veggies and fruits. I tend to cook most meals from scratch but yes I do eat out but we stick to the basics. Oh well I figure it out. I will start doing some research on food allergies.
Well can't say as I was AF last night, since I wasn't. But I chose to drink and that is fine. I just won't have as many AF days as I have had in the last few months of tracking.
But my yard is beginning to look great I only have one more side of the house to do and along a back fence line then I am going to call it good for the summer and just do light maintenance I hope. With the temps pushing 95 and 100+ over the next 5 days yard work is on hold. (only a floor A/C unit in our bedroom) yikes

@lilylady3 thanks so much for tge bitters photo, it is lovely and so were all your photos from your girls trip. I see tgey have a book about bitters up on that shelf. Now that would be handy. Your choice sounds wonderful.
@lmlmrn please do take it slow in that horrible weather headed your way. UGH does not sound inviting. Pictures of your yard project after it is finished?
Yesterday was a horrible day.
Rained out at work, ruined an acrylic painting because I had to be pulled away from it before it was finished 😠
Good thing is, did not drink or even think about having one to compensate for my bad day.
Today was much better, got yesterdays work job done, but I did not attempt my painting again yet.

Hi : - )
My goal is 16-20 AF days per month.
Diary Style.
Monday June 21 - Drinks. I had a quarter of the second can of Gin Smash to start, didn't like it as much as the other variety, it was a bit too sweet, couldn't taste the Gin enough. Planned drinks for Friday.
Tuesday June 22 - AF - Felt a bit fuzzy this morning after having a few drinks last night.
Wednesday June 23 - AF - I feel like having a couple of drinks, but am going to resist. An unexpected extra shift at the restaurant tonight, make hay while the sun shines and all of that. Happy to hit my 16AF : - )
Thursday June 24 - 2 drinks. Didn't make it to Friday, but all good.
Friday June 25 - Drinks. Took the 3/4 of a can of the Gin Smash over to my friend's place when we were both finished work and split it with her. So 3/4 / 2 = ??? 3/8ths? Then had 2 drinks when I got home, so 2 3/8ths drinks.
Saturday June 26 - AF - My first full day off since May 14th. I would have done Census, but didn't get a new list, hence an entire day off! I was so behind in everything. I worked my tail off in the yard and made some good progress even though we are having a heatwave.

So this is Cranbrook airport temperature, halfway up to Kimberley in elevation.
I live right downtown, so it is for sure a few degrees warmer always.

This is a bottle of the hair oil.
I love that it has a sprayer.

Glad Midsommar everyone. Its been the summer solstice holiday this weekend in Sweden.
I pleased to say I've had only a couple of drinks which isn't bad going as this is a notoriously booze filled weekend in Sweden.
We had drinks with lunch on Friday (beer and snaps (aquavit)) which is traditional with a mid-summer table but then we called it there. Normally we'd drink into the night and probably start earlier while preping but we didn't. For me that was a bigger win than an AF day as I have trouble stoping once I've started.
Waking up on midsummer day without a hangover was great so I got up early and took a 2.5 hour bike ride out into the early morning sun.

@Stockholm_Andy - Congrats on your win to control your intake and not get carried away drinking throughout the day! That is a huge win!
Love your table setting! Beautiful. And the next day bike ride had to feel extremely wonderful with such beautiful scenery.5 -
Spectacular table setting @Stockholm_Andy and especially awesome plates. Awesome progress too!
@dawnbgethealthy and others, I will give the argan oil recommendation a shot, thanks...hope you all stay nice and cool in this weather (Dawn, is Vancouver Island a good heat escape? I'd be there now if I could). Oh and places to live, hands down mediterranean climate for me is ideal (I'm mediterranean)...so in the U.S. my option is California near the coast. Central coast likely and enough space for a mini-farm. I like morning coastal fog, clean air from the ocean breeze, sunny afternoons not too hot, hilly landscape, ability to grow most types of plants. I can drive to serious mountains and forests when I need to, etc.
Yes there is a big cost to pay and high taxes and I'd probably need to keep working somewhere but we live once right?
AF Saturday and same deal for today......5 -
Stunning photos, @Stockholm_Andy! I know what you mean about moderating a boozy holiday being a big win. Good on you!
In the states we have the 4th of July holiday soon, and it is notoriously the booziest day of the year at my sailing club. Goofy races in the morning with big silver trophy bowls full of some strong concoction (winner's choice) and then drinking on the water all day. A pretty dangerous combination! The funny thing is the past couple years I've kept my drinking moderate, and if I'm honest about it, I actually had more fun with fewer drinks.
I've kept it to 1 or 2 drinks so far this weekend, but Sunday is the day I tend to stop caring. I need to understand that better.7 -
Today would have been Day 22 for me only drinking water and coffee. I decided to treat myself with a batch of sugar free lemonade. I've never had it without vodka. I just wish my martini glasses werent in storage...then I could pretend with full effect.7

2 glasses of an unusual French white wine with dinner.

Sunday June 27 - AF - On Saturday my friend brought me a couple of cans of the Gin Smash flavour that I liked when she was up in Kimberley getting her hair cut (the only place to get it apparently). They are in the fridge. I really felt like having one after work and then what yard work I could manage in the blazing heat. I resisted, they aren't going anywhere. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.

@globalhiker
Yes, I think that Vancouver Island is generally cooler because of the Ocean. They do golf there year round, so it is temperate.
It is hot where I live all summer.
I don't know if you would think that this was cool enough though:
Right now, 91

@dawnbgethealthy I am south of you about3 hours from Blaine. I saw 103 today in my car! Please stay hydrated
Just a quick fly by tonight AF, yeah4 -
Alsace wine is pretty much like German wine in the growing conditions, zone, and flavour.
There was a woman on another forum who lives in Alsace, where people speak both French and German.
I am sure that you have had Alsace or other Rhine wines in the past. How did you like this one?
I don't drink white wine, which has saved me many times when trying to have a visit with my friend (who drinks white wine every day so has it on hand) and being offered some. Easy to say no, because I don't like it.
She also keeps red on hand, but I have become intolerant to red wine over the last year and a bit, so no temptation there either.
I used to enjoy a Bordeaux, Pinot Noir (Burgundy or Oregon), Amarone, Syrah, Barolo, ...all dependent on the time of day and the food pairings. I could never get into the Riojas.
These days I am getting into AF beer lol. I may have had a cold beer on a summer day very rarely through the years (something indistinct like Corona) , and now I am kind of getting into the flavour and fizz of beer but with no alcohol, very low calories, and no hangover.
I find all other mocktails just make me want the real thing more. Perhaps because Beer was never my drink NA beer doesn't trigger me.3 -
@Lilylady3k , @ahoy_m8 and @globalhiker - Thank you but I can't take any credit for the table setting that was all my wife.
No drinks at all on Saturday or Sunday so I think that brings me up to 15 days AF for this month. I'm actually starting to look forwards to beating that for next month!
Thanks for sharing everyone it's inspirational and motivating reading all of your stories.7 -
It's MONDAY folks. Last Monday of June.

Absolutely beautiful table setting @Stockholm_Andy.
Everyone that is experiencing the brutal heat please take care.
And remember drinking water to hydrate is important, ICE in a mixed drink does not count as water for hydration (less alcohol joke🤣)

@dawnbgethealthy - The Alsace was refreshing, light & not sweet ... great for the summer heat and an evening meal of shrimp, avocado, tomato salad! I thought it might be more like a German Riesling but it was not. Nor was it like a Chardonnay. It is unique and inexpensive ~$10 / bottle.

Happy Monday! (Maybe that's a little bit of an oxymoron.) Love all the stories and pics! As someone who is now starting to watch movies and then realize 10 (20?) minutes in, I've already seen it, I've become fascinated with neuroscience lately. I wish I could blame all my memory issues on alcohol--I know it's contributed--but so have typical American bad habits that are contributing which I've been slowly changing over the years. There is so much we can do naturally to help restore our brains get them healthy again which is super great news. Not necessarily fun stuff (minimize booze, caffeine, dope, any non-nutrient-dense food...all which affect quality REM sleep which is turning out to be more important than anyone knew.) But I'll say it's more fun than prolonged morbidity. I thought I was doing pretty good keeping my weight around 115, BP 96/66, eating mostly plant-based + fish, exercising somewhat regularly, no Rx's other than HRT. But if my mind goes, what good is any of it? So I'm accelerating my efforts because I'm scared as *kitten* of dementia.
Anyway, regarding voices in our head and changing our thinking...I've heard that it's easier to change our physical behavior, which leads to changes in thought, than to just change our thoughts. One way is through breathing. (Maybe this is why my fav slogan ever is Nike's "Just Do It." This one Youtube podcast talks about how we can use our bodies to influence our mind.8 -
We're doing retirement planning and so I've been watching youtube programs trying to educate myself better. One was interesting, they ask: What asset do you value the most? How would you rank your assets in terms of importance?
The planner said everyone replied their 401k retirement plan or their home/real estate. He said you're all wrong. What asset people value the most is themselves, their spouse, their family. All of it is more important than the money.
We are our own most precious assets. This is why we need to take the best of care.8 -
To counteract my previous heavy sciency post, I highly recommend finding a hammock and twirling. It's similar to booze in that it induces giggles, a high, and dizziness--but without a hangover!

@dawnbgethealthy that is hot for the houses that don't have A/C. I've never been to Victoria. If it's too hot, suppose one can drive over to the other end (Ucluelet and Tofino) or jump in the water. It was very cold in July on that side when I went. My car read 111, not bad for here yet, wait till July when it reads 119. Time for Canada to open up the border please3
-
Yes, please! I so badly wanted to take my family to Montreal for the month of December. Colleges were remote only between Thanksgiving and mid-January, so with everyone home, and with the US election shaping up to be a rough experience, it just seemed like a great time to be in Canada. Unfortunately for us, Canada did not agree.
ETA: low key weekend. Stuck to two glasses wine Fri & Sun and one margarita Saturday. Didn't even desire more than that. I definitely had a bit of the I don't care attitude heading into Sunday evening, and I was extremely hungry before dinner, but in the end it all stayed on track. And that's despite DH opening a bottle once we got home. I wish I had better insight into why sometimes I stay on track and other times I jump the rail. Work in progress.5 -
AF this evening . Counting down! 2 more days left in June.
Met my minimum goal of 12 AF days this month!5 -
Oh my, I lost my post!!
ok readers digest version
At a little after 7pm this evening the temperature outside has dropped down to 104, temperature inside of my house 98.
I have melted and hope to have visions of coming back as an iceberg
My June AF days are less than my goal, so still ok with that. Even though June was a higer drink month I have noticed that I am more aware of having a drink or several, not just me on auto pilot---oh gee 6pm must be the start of my adult beverages8 -

I am not on Vancouver Island, I am 12 hours East of there, pretty close to the Alberta border. @globalhiker had been asking if Vancouver Island was cooler. It wasn't yesterday. Cooler than here for sure, but it always is in the summer. Still, 91 doesn't seem very cool.
You are in a gorgeous spot, coastal? Everett? You must get weather very similar to Vancouver.2 -
