Less Alcohol ~ JUNE 2021 ~ One Day At A Time

16 Days AF for June.
2 big matches for me tonight Sweden (my adopted country) vs Ukraine and England vs Germany.
However, I won't be using them as an excuse to have a celebratory/consolation drink
I've realised reading a lot of your posts that quitting/cutting down on something can make you quite introspective.
This in turn has made me realise how often I've looked for an "excuse" to have a drink. Food for thought for me.
Enjoy your Tuesday!4 -
Happy Tuesday! I'm so sorry @lmlmrn and those experiencing record heat. I'm surprised you have any resolve left. Sending cool wind (not enough to fuel a fire!) and positive vibes your way.
@Stockholm_Andy my kids are mad about "football." Yesterday was an 11 hour *kitten* show of a workday. I finally got my lunchtime run in at 7pm--trying to find my Zen and they were blowing up our chat the whole way with commentary, lol. But I got this 1 mile out, so finally found it.
@globalhiker Sounds like a smart planner. I've never used a planner, but need one. Would you recommend?
@dawnbgethealthy Twirling was so fun! I'm trying to get my kid mojo back.
I just got sucked into looking at Sharon Stone in a yellow bikini during my wakeup coffee this morning. Might try some of her weight/resistance tactics while chained to a computer. In addition to moving and resistance, she credits thighmaster (lol) and cutting out alcohol for her toned legs. Don't know about you ladies in your 50's & beyond, but at about 55, my legs turned to jelly. I rarely wear shorts (I guess that's the good thing about living in Maine.) Would love to reverse them, but think it might be a lost cause without lots of $$$.

I am in search of a secret for aging hair (why is it getting a crinkly texture???)...if anyone has a tip, please share
Beat your hair into submission with product! Haha! Seriously as we age and our hair gets gray, the texture becomes more coarse. Frequent conditioning helps, as does the Argan oil products listed above. I use A little bit of Bed Head Manipulator once my hair is dry, and it smooths everything down.3 -
Had a wonderful weekend in Newport for a wedding of my husband’s best friend. So beautiful up there, I love the constant sea breeze to cool everything down. Got to tour one of the mansions, went to a spa, and the wedding was really fun.
I drank more than the two drinks/day I planned on. It was more like 3-4 drinks per day, but I did pace myself considering that before every event, the guys and the wives all got together for “pre-gaming”. I ordered as many seltzer’s as I could stomach. By the end of the weekend I was feeling run down, so I’m AF this week.6 -
@mainelylisa amazing picture. I love running by the water.

@Stockholm_Andy - That was exactly the point I thought of this morning! "Looked for an excuse to have a drink". I almost but did not indulge in alcohol last night but stopped. Why ... my normal excuses 1) there is an open bottle of wine in the fridge. 2) DH was at an Astros game and no one was watching so I could sneak a drink of liquor without him knowing 3) Normally if left on my own at night like that in the past I would drink ... but I've not faced that challenge in well over a year because of the pandemic ... I've not been left alone.
BUT I passed my first evening alone in over a year and did not sneak a drink or drink till I blacked out. It was a WINNER of an evening.
Woke up this morning and could still keep the AF on my record.8 -
@mainelylisa - Beautiful pic and looks like a great place for a run. Thanks for the comment about the Sharon Stone article I'll check it out. Just read last night one on Jennifer Aniston and she mentioned that she intermittently fasts skipping breakfast drinking coffee only, pilates now that she hurt her back, and her love of running.
My legs are not in shape at age 60 but then again I can't run yet at this weight ... too hard on my knees. I have a goal to begin running when I get my weight back under 200lbs.
@dawnbgethealthy - I tried the Crude bitters last night with club soda and lime ... NOT the same as it would taste with a little rum and pineapple juice. Oh well. Thinking I need to find some of those non alcoholic beers but I've not found them at the grocery.
Those that like hard Cider ... my sister fell in love with one when we were in Arkansas. Black Apple Cherry Limeade Cider. I stuck to a single regular beer at that lunch last week.
@Womona - Newport! Fun to get with old friends and celebrate ... creating many new memories. Thanks for the Bead Head tip. I have a good friend that uses it. I'm using Moroccanoil Treatment Oil regularly after washing my hair and sometimes a little when it is dry. My kids are amazed. I had really frizzy hair when I use to dye my hair. Now that I'm retired I gave up dying my hair and let it go silver ... sort of platinum blond and it is straighter and smoother than it ever was in my lifetime. The dying of my hair was making the gray drier and kinkier.3 -
Note to self: Introspection is necessary. If something is not working, STOP, THINK, and CHANGE it asap. No complaining, just do it. End of story.
Heat? Makes me want to drink. Best thing is to distract and go watch a movie or plan travels. I can talk about travel day and night.
Hair? I ditched shampoo and tried regular all-natural olive and argan oil body soap (yes) and then just used coconut oil. WAY better. Appreciated your tips!!!
What else are we talking about? Legs? Yikes I hate mine but hey, they work and my goal is to make them last and not need knee or hip replacements. Cycling hard and hiking give me much better results than running. Add in Endermologie (I get awesome results but it's time and money) and some days at the ocean (tanning) and the ocean water does tighten my skin nicely. I swear Bromelain if taken at night on empty stomach (contraindicated with blood thinners) gives me really improved skin.
BMI? Ugh, Thanks to intermittent fasting mine went UP to 27 this month. Just read it can do the opposite to women in my age bracket because it LOWERS estrogen and mine feels it's at zero. Low estrogen is supposed to be fat storing? News to me. Well, I tried it and got those results! So I am going to go enjoy a nice breakfast of eggs now. No more fasting, swear it made my hair and skin age ten years in 4 weeks.
AF yesterday and same deal for today. I'll obsess about anti-aging (and travel) instead.

@mainelylisa yes, that was an incredible sunset last night. I pulled over the car at a boat launch and just kept shaking my head in disbelief that my eyes were a witness to such an amazing sky. I hate seeing it on social media the next day knowing I missed out on it. Hahaha not this time!
Too fricken hot in our home yesterday so "I"....repeat "I" installed the air conditioner. It took many hours to go from over 85° down to 65°.
Now I am at work sweating my &%$#off and the dog is at home with a sweater on. Lol
AF lastnight, going for that golden 23 for this month.7 -
Planning 2 glasses of French Chablis (white wine) with dinner this evening. Eggplant Pomodoro w/ Angel Hair Pasta .

That is a nice recipe @Lilylady3k
I find sometimes that if I don't have meat in my food that I am still hungry. Depends on what it is I guess.
I do use Yves in Chili and that is filling. Falafels I find filling. Beans are filling.
@MissMay really likes the Heineken00 for an AF beer. That one should be easy to find.
@Stockholm_Andy
We are into the NHL finals over on this side of the pond, Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadians, best of 7, Tampa took game one.
@mainelylisa
Wonderful photo!!!
@Womona
What is the news with your boat? Have you been out on it much? Could we see a photo? : - )5 -
Hi : - )
My goal is 16-20 AF days per month.
Diary Style.
Monday June 21 - Drinks. I had a quarter of the second can of Gin Smash to start, didn't like it as much as the other variety, it was a bit too sweet, couldn't taste the Gin enough. Planned drinks for Friday.
Tuesday June 22 - AF - Felt a bit fuzzy this morning after having a few drinks last night.
Wednesday June 23 - AF - I feel like having a couple of drinks, but am going to resist. An unexpected extra shift at the restaurant tonight, make hay while the sun shines and all of that. Happy to hit my 16AF : - )
Thursday June 24 - 2 drinks. Didn't make it to Friday, but all good.
Friday June 25 - Drinks. Took the 3/4 of a can of the Gin Smash over to my friend's place when we were both finished work and split it with her. So 3/4 / 2 = ??? 3/8ths? Then had 2 drinks when I got home, so 2 3/8ths drinks.
Saturday June 26 - AF - My first full day off since May 14th. I would have done Census, but didn't get a new list, hence an entire day off! I was so behind in everything. I worked my tail off in the yard and made some good progress even though we are having a heatwave.
Sunday June 27 - AF - On Saturday my friend brought me a couple of cans of the Gin Smash flavour that I liked when she was up in Kimberley getting her hair cut (the only place to get it apparently). They are in the fridge. I really felt like having one after work and then what yard work I could manage in the blazing heat. I resisted, they aren't going anywhere. Maybe tomorrow or the next day.
Monday June 28 - AF - Very hot here, 105F for the next few days. Today after work I pretty much retreated straight to the basement instead of having a cool cocktail on the porch. Invited to a friend's for after work cocktails tomorrow.
Tuesday June 29 - AF - I stopped very briefly at my friend's place after work who had invited me for cocktails. I left the car running with the A/C on. I did not feel well all day today, the heat has done a number on me and also on my sleep. I started out to do Census early this morning, but it was already 27C (let me convert that) 80.6 at 8am. 100 here now at 9pm. I told my Statistics Canada boss that I would not be working for her the rest of the week. Double masking, cloudless sunny sky - can't do it. The heat gave me nausea and a headache and I feel exhausted. It was super nice to be at work at the restaurant today in the A/C. Alcohol didn't seem like a good idea today. I may take 1/2 of a sleeping pill tonight and go to bed with my Frozen Magic Bag and a fan. Happy to hit 20AF days of course : - )
Rolling Total - 20AF days out of 29 days.6 -
@mainelylisa thank you for the photo, if that is some shore in Maine it looks so similar to the beaches along the Puget Sound....all rock (am I am ok with this). Along the coast is all sand....
I survived the heatwave and let me tell you it was brrrrutal.....
Lovely cool 75 right now
I did have a large glass of wine last night in hopes it would help me sleep, even with an A/C vented outside our poor bedroom never ever got cool, even with the help of a fan.
This week my sister flew in and we are spending some time DEEP cleaning my mom's house. Last time it was done was 4 years ago when she was in the hospital. It took me 2 hours just to scrub the floor in the (must say this is a larger added on room) Laundry Room, and breakfast nook. Tomorrow the kitchen and dining room. We are working/lurking/suggesting that maybe it is time to bring someone in 2x per month to do the heavy stuff she can not anymore.
I don't want you to think I and my siblings are not caring for our Mother, she is just fussy when it comes to her home and strangers coming in...I get that. She wants to be 100% independant (as any 87yr would) it is just, and she acknowledges the fact, she can no longer do the scrubbing. She vacuums, dusts, dishes blah blah. But to scrub the tub/shower and kitchen floor...not able to......Good news is she is going to ask the neighbor who she has come in to clean her place...win win.
Tonight I am just tired. Got home around 6:30pm, picked up take out, ate barely 1/4th just not as hungry as I thought.
June AF days are looking really very slim this past week. So I am going to start a clean slate on Thursday July 1. (btw July 4th is not hard for me not to drink. No kids in neighborhood setting off fireworks so no need for the lawn chair/drink display to watch6 -

@dawnbgethealthy - You could easily add sauteed shrimp or chicken or even maybe white beans to the eggplant recipe if you wanted more protein. I found it very filling ... probably because I've not hand much if any pasta in the past month!
Thanks for the reminder of the Heineken00 ... wondering if my grocery stores separate the AF beer. hmmm need to explore or go over to my local SPECS liquor store.4 -

@lmlmrn - I totally understand your predicament. My Mom is 84. My mother's home started gathering more dirt and grime the last couple of years ... because she no longer deep cleaned the house. She did wash dishes, wipe down cabinets, sweep/mop floor ... her favorite is to take the area rugs outside and pressure wash them. Her husband didn't want anyone to help and so he cleaned one bathroom that never ever got cleaned and she did the other where guests used. But still it was just not enough. My sister and I cleaned the house back in October & November. When her husband passed away in November my sister and I convinced her to hire the maid she used a number of years back. But we put the stipulation that the maid would not iron clothes ... mom could still do that. Tina has been great! She wipes down the cabinets, scrubbed the showers, and all the tile floors in the house.
Since mom is living on social security ... I'm paying the yard guy and internet. My sister is paying the maid to come in every other week.
Still after all this I'm not sure how much longer she'll be able to live there on her own. She feel a couple of weeks ago breaking her wrist. Missed a step. She did not see the doc until she drove here for a visit and we insisted. Then she had same day surgery. She is headed back home today with my sister and then DH & I are traveling back down to our fishing camp (next door to her home) for a long weekend. We are going to see how things go.
Hope that you have success with your mom!

Last day of June and I am ready to say good-bye to it and make July better! Some positives....Covid looks to be over (at least it is here)...stock market has been running strong....forest fires nearby are contained and people moving back into towns...gyms are having fitness classes back...we can go to restaurants now....
Yes there's lots of insanity and things going wrong but we survived a lot of madness - and drank less!
Here's to a really amazing July....bring it on!7 -
End of the month update... its been a good month so far. Nearing the end of the 75 days. Another 10 days to go. Will be in the middle of vacation - so thinking might celebrate with a nice cold beer. But also really dont feel like it anymore.. Guess I will play it by ear. Also its my birthday month.. July 4!!! So will probably have a beer with friends when I get back, they tolerated my non-drinking and supported me...8

Someone posted this on my daily weigh in thread and it really hits home. Sharing his thought since I also think that it works when trying to consume less alcohol.
“On another matter…. Let me say I am thankful for this group because I simply do not do well under the “unexamined life” mode.
“Unexamined life” is like playing golf, but not writing your score on the score card. You still have a score even though you did not write it down. If you want to get better, you must keep track. It helps you find what works, and what you need to work on. Fore!6 -
Until joining this group I had not reflected on my alcohol consumption or goal adherence on a monthly basis. It seems like a useful yardstick. Thanks for that.
Goals:- AF M-F: I maintained this with 2 exceptions that involved a weeknight special family dinner and dinner with friends. So long as it's 1 or 2 drinks (one was, one wasn't), I don't have a problem going outside my general rule for special occasions. Special occasions aside, weeknight AF has been a helpful habit to me to reduce overall consumption and to get more food for my maintenance calories.
- 1-2 drink limit on weekends: I'm batting .500 on weekends here (two were, two weren't). This is where I have more work to do re: internal expectations and awareness of what brings true pleasure and enjoyment. I think I have faulty mental associations that give alcohol more credit than it really deserves. Pleasure comes from lots of sources.
In July, we're taking a family trip to Napa with two vineyard visits/wine tastings per day. I'm really not sure how to frame tastings in terms of the goals above. My general sense is vacations are a time to enjoy being together, to enjoy being free from normal daily responsibilities and to enjoy unique things special places have to offer. Eating/drinking more than normal for 4 days is fine for me. Of course, doing either to excess ends up being less net pleasure and enjoyment. So I guess the goal is to keep the consumption somewhere in the abundant but not excessing range. Thoughts and observations welcome!5 -
@ahoy_m8 - Enjoy your Napa trip! I love visiting that area. If you can make a reservation at Nickel Nickel Winery it is totally worth the price!
As to setting goals ... I agree that vacations are a time away from normal daily responsibilities. During my short vacations in June I let go of the 2 drink limit .... but did drink water between. So maybe your goal could be to pack a small ice chest of water bottles and ensure that you drink water throughout your adventure. Enjoy!6 -
HELLO well the last day of June. Woo hoo.
Only 4 more witching hours left for me before I go to bed. I am already calling it AF.
Got my 23 days alcohol free. Would have liked to have kept within my goal limit on two of the days that I strayed...oh gee, but what the heck? I can make up for it in JULY.
Which brings us to this, the link to our JULY LESS ALCOHOL 2021 thread.

See you on the July thread.👀3 -

The wind is not cooperating! Our sweet spot is between 3-9 knots, and it’s been closer to 13 and that’s too much for my little boat. Plus this weekend it’s raining. So I’m chomping at the bit! As soon as I get a good picture I will post it!3 -
Change of plans and we dined out at an Italian restaurant this evening. 2 glasses of red wine.

I did find some Heineken 0.0 and picked up a few bottles this evening at the grocery store. This is a picture at SPECS of what their options are for non-alcohol beer while we were buying 6 bottles of wine.
Carbs are still a killer on non-alcohol beer.
Anyone suggest trying one of these?

@lmlmrn is so hard to get that generation to accept help, even when they clearly need it. Also they tend to be way too frugal to hire out (exhibit A is my late father!). I feel your pain. Glad she is amenable to having the neighbor help with the deep cleaning. What a relief.2
-
AF since Monday night!6
-
@Lilylady3k Thank you for sharing your story of your mom. Today was another day of cleaning but I must say it is complete. Bonus....she agreed to talk to the neighbor and see how she uses to her home.
Wow June is ending, I did not do as well this month as I have in the previous two but I made the choice. The drinks were mindful not the mindless. So for this June was a success for me4 -

Rolling Total - 21AF days out of 30 days. Pleased with that.4 -
@Lilylady3k
The carbs and calories really vary with all of those NA beers. I had one that was 10 calories and one that was 70 calories. I think that the Beck's is pretty good, and any of the German ones.3
