Still keeping up with this thread! Lurking and only chiming in if I feel I can be helpful. So far you're all doing great (as expected), so haven't said a lot. Just to prove I have been reading...
even as a male I have shorts that don't make it look like I peed all over myself for those times that it's really just sweat (honest, I swear, it's ALL sweat)!
Being kind to city workers over mailboxes is very wise if you plan on having to dispose of bodies.
While I never enjoyed doing timed run/walk intervals, I have essentially been training that same way all this year by simply running in target HR zones. For example, the last several weeks of my Zone 2 runs after the first mile were all roughly equivalent to 60 seconds running and 30 seconds walking. Not exactly though, and elevation had impacts as well. But on average the Galloway method and just staying within a steady HR zone are mostly the same.
I choose not to run shirtless yet. I am still running with no pants though.
...I've been wearing shorts for a couple months at least.
My foot is still healing. I still feel discomfort each morning, but seemingly less and less so. I have included hilly walks this week with no foot issues, and plan to do a long, hilly walk on Sunday in place of a long run and see how that goes. I suspect my Garmin performance measurements will call me a couch potato tomorrow, but I am somewhat enjoying watching it freak out.
I am hoping to be discomfort-free and running again in early September. Time will tell.7 -
Amazing sunrise @AlphaHowls! The reason for it is terrible but just incredible how it looks.
@WhatMeRunning glad your foot is improving. Sounds like you have a good recovery plan. Garmin can freak out all it wants, with its "unproductive" judgments but it's not the boss of you

It was indeed a really nice morning and I headed out at 7 am to meet a couple of friends for our long run. We did a loop starting from my neighborhood through the lakes and along the canal and then through the village back home. I like this loop because its varied scenery and terrain. It also feels like even though it's a good long length you can't bail out and take any shortcuts (there's no cutting across the lake/state park/canal) so you have to just keep going and get it done. My friends went on to get at least 10 miles but I needed to get to work so I stopped when we got back to my neighborhood. That will have to do for a long run and it's better than last week.9 -
@kgirlhart I love that I can program my workouts into the Garmin. I had it about a year before I tried it and then wondered why in the world I hadn't done it before. LOL
Nice running in those conditions @rheddmobile . I haven't gotten that brave yet.
Nice run @julieannegannon !
Good luck with your race @ContraryMaryMary ! Looking forward to reading the race report.
Nice running @sweetdaisy13 !
@AlphaHowls That's a pretty picture. It has been hazy here for the last few days, but not that bad.
@WhatMeRunning Glad walking isn't making your foot hurt. Haha about running with no pants.
Nice run @katharmonic ! Sounds like an enjoyable place you have for the run too.1 -
Good luck @ContraryMaryMary!0

7-1 2.1 miles running and 1.0 mile walking (Hill Repeats after cutting cedars for almost 1.5 hours)
7-2 0.0 miles running but 1.0 mile walking on treadmill (also played doubles tennis this morning)
7-3 9.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (easy pace, but not an easy run)
7-4 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking laps on the driveway
7-5 2.3 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (also played doubles tennis for almost 2 hours, outdoors)
7-6 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking
7-7 1.0 mile running, 1.0 mile walking (fast mile)
7-8 2.6 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Hill Repeats - 6 months post surgery)
7-9 0.0 mile running, 1.0 mile walking (hot and humid)
7-10 7.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (easy pace, very humid)
7-11 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (rest day)
7-12 2.8 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (tempo run)
7-13 2.1 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Recovery run)
7-14 2.6 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Foundation Run)
7-15 3.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Short Interval Run)
7-16 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Doubles tennis, mowed my lawn, trimmed mom's, and walked)
7-17 5.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking ("Long run" cut short)
7-18 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (keeping the streak alive)
7-19 4.1 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Cruise Interval on treadmill)
7-20 2.5 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Recovery Run on the treadmill)
7-21 2.5 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Foundation Run on the driveway)
7-22 3.15 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Short Interval Run)
7-23 0.00 miles running, 1.0 mile walking
MT = 51.75/70 miles running: 23.0/31miles walking
My weekly tennis was cancelled today, so my only cross training today was my walk to keep my streak going.
When I let my dog, Tippy, out this morning, I heard her barking at something. I know her barks and it wasn't the "there's an intruder" bark, but it wasn't her "there's a vulture flying overhead either." It was more of the, "There's something here that I'm not sure about" bark. So, I went out to see if I could find her and see what it was. I did see her, but heard a weird, scary, eerie call from an animal. It was a sound I had never heard before. She kept barking at whatever it was and going into the woods. I came in and put some shorts on so I wouldn't get my PJ's messed up, and went down into the woods, warily, to see if I could see what it was and get Tippy away from it, if I could. Before I got to where I could see it, it quit "calling" and Tippy came to me. Yeah. I came in and looked up what I thought it could have been. Sure enough, it was a bobcat. If you've never heard their scream, and want to, check it out here. Somewhere around the 25 sec spot on the video is the first thing I heard.

Oh they make the worst noise! The first time I heard one after we moved out to the country I thought it was a woman being murdered! I hope Tippy has enough sense to avoid them.4 -
Thanks @rheddmobile . Fortunately, I think they are afraid of her and climb trees to escape.1

76F and 100% humidity at 7:00 am this morning with no wind. My weather app described it as “calm” which sounds nicer than it feels.
I understand weather is all relative and hot/cold/humid for one person is fine for another, etc but @shanaber I am so jealous of your 70% humidity! And I absolutely took a detour on my cool down walk just to go through a neighbors sprinkler this morning. It was the best part of my whole run!
I am also very very fair if you can’t tell from my profile picture! I usually wear copious amounts of sunscreen and a visor during the summer. Usually I get up early enough that I don’t really encounter much sun even with the longer days but as my weekend runs get a little longer I definitely need to get back on the sunscreen. I forgot this morning and could feel the sun on my back on my way home and started feeling paranoid about getting burned. I don’t love the way it feels on my skin but the alternative of running in long sleeves sounds even worse.
@AlphaHowls The sunrise is so cool looking!
@WhatMeRunning I hope your recovery keeps going well.WhatMeRunning wrote: »I choose not to run shirtless yet. I am still running with no pants though.

@AlphaHowls I thought that picture was the Japanese flag at first!
@WhatMeRunning I hope your heel continues to heal quickly!!
@martaindale I truly feel for you with this hot summer weather.
Felt sick all last night with upset stomach and headache. I figured with running yesterday I would be lucky if I made it 10 miles this morning. It was stupid hot again at 79F / 84% humidity and blazing sun. I took short walk breaks every 2 miles. Ended up running with a group of high school kids that were out for their weekend long run for cross country. The boys dropped me pretty quickly, then I ran with the girls for a little while 😁 But then I turned to go a different route and left them behind. Thought I could get 13 when I hit the 10 mile mark, but ended up doing 12 miles. I was dead tired, and sweat was really stinging my eyes.

@Scott6255 Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I'm impressed you have been able to keep the mileage up even with feeling poorly.
Also, I forgot to pay the new shoe tax this morning. I wore a pair of my stockpiled ghost 12's. Strava only shows a little over 200 miles on each of my current ones and I usually retire them around 250-300. It seems a little early for them to be feeling this worn, but I figured I can use the newer pair for my weekend longer run and keep the others a couple more months for the shorter runs. I don't think they are totally worn out yet, but I could totally tell the difference with the new ones today!
6 -
@AlphaHowls - The sunrise looks pretty cool until you think about what is in the air to make it look like that!
@whatmerunning - hope you are getting some relief from the PF!
@quilteryoyo - I love bobcats but hate the way they sound. When I was a teen we used to track them (for photography) up in the hills around Boise. Hobbes is afraid of cats so I am not sure what he would do if he saw one as big as he is! I am sure he would bark and then run! 😂😂
@martaindale - I know 70% humidity isn't much compared to what y'all get in the south and south east but for us it is miserable. Our norm is somewhere around 20% and less when the winds come in off the desert.
I was wearing tank tops and covering myself in gobs of sunscreen too, along with running early in the morning. The dermatologist finally said enough. It just wasn't working. My dad had melanoma and I don't want to go there, so long sleeves it is. However... I do run in shorts and cover my legs on sunscreen. They just don't seem to be affected the same way as my arms and shoulders.
Those shoes are pretty but I would be so sad to get them all dirty as I am sure they would be quickly!
@Scott6255 - sorry you weren't feeling well but way to knock out 12 miles while feeling crummy. Glad the girls didn't drop you too! I can't keep up with any of the high school ruiners I encounter, boys or girls. They are all way too fast for me!
Took Hobbes out for a little run this morning before it got too warm. I haven't been taking him because of the heat and he also hasn't been his usually energetic self lately. I figured today I would since it was so much cooler. On our warmup walk around the neighborhood we got chased by a Jack Russel terrier. My response since having been bitten by our neighbors JRT is to just stop so it doesn't attack me or Hobbes. Fortunately this pup was old and apparently pretty friendly but the people could not get it to come to them or catch it so it just kept coming at us and chasing us so we couldn't go anywhere. I eventually just started slowly moving us away as they chased him around and around away from us. A neighbor in that area who loves Hobbes wanted to chat so I moved us slowly over to where she was and that JRT still kept coming over (3 houses down) to bark and snap at us. I just don't understand why people don't train them even simple commands so they can get control of them. I had planned to run along the trail but it was getting too warm for Hobbes so we walked, as much as possible in the shade and stayed off the pavement. We ran into another friend on the trail who wanted to love up on Hobbes (I swear he has a fan club!) and we visited with her a while before heading home.
Tomorrow and Monday are expected to be even cooler than today (maybe only in the 70's!) so I am hoping to get in a long(er) run tomorrow of around 8 miles.6 -

I didn't run today - I probably should have but I was ready for a rest day after the long run yesterday. But I did go to a tough HIIT class at the gym. Then had a little brunch with a friend. And then took the dog out, which turned out to be a much longer walk than I intended and we ended up getting 6 miles. Stella was worn out after that one for sure.
Tonight I went to a fundraiser at a local brewery hosted by one of the members of our run club. It was to raise money for suicide awareness and prevention, as his son died by suicide a couple of years ago. This would have been his 21st birthday. A very sad thing, but a nice outpouring of support by members of our run club and his friends in the community. He is also hosting a race in August called the Life Worth Living 5k. I admire that he's poured his heart into this cause and used his connections in running to help.9 -
Race report: When the wind woke me at 5am I wondered whether I’d get a new 10k PB at today’s event or not. As it turns out, not. Not even close.
The course started next to the beach and the wind was howling along it - the sea was white with foam. And regardless of the compere’s assurances that we’d start with a stiff tail wind and then be inland, I knew we’d be battling.
I ran well but have never run in wind like this - certainly never tried racing in it. It was hard work, especially as we seemed to have a headwind for well over half of it. The last kilometre along the beach was particularly brutal (he was right, we did have a stiff tailwind at the start but that mean a stiff headwind to the finish 😂).
There was also a rather steep hill about 6km in that I wasn’t expecting and certainly didn’t enjoy. One of those ones that goes up, turns a corner and then goes up even more. Most unkind.
That being said, I put in a good effort so wasn’t unhappy not to PB - I wasn’t even close, missing it by four minutes or so. However, I did manage to be third woman home, and first veteran female! (Disclaimer, very small field but I’ll take it as it’s my first podium finish!) On that note, it was weird being out front - I ran alone for much of it, only passing the slower half marathoners.
Pics in the spoiler.11 -
@Scott6255 You did great. I'm surprised you were able to go that distance when you weren't feeling well. Haha about the high school kids. What did they think about running with an older gentleman? I hope you are feeling better today.
Nice running and new shoes @martaindale ! You're doing great in the heat and humidity.
@shanaber Hahaha about Hobbes and what you would think he would do with a bobcat. Tippy hates cats, so I'm sure, though a little intimidated by the size, she will chase them away if she sees them. Glad the JRT didn't bite you. I want to commiserate with you on people not teaching their dogs simple commands, but I think I would be a hypocrite. Tippy is really good, but if she only "comes" when I call if she feels like it. That is the one thing I wish I had done different when she was a puppy. She's more likely to come if I go out and call "Tippy, where are you?" LOL
@skippygirlsmom Have a great vacation! I'm with you, have a hard time commenting on my phone.
Nice race @ContraryMaryMary ! That wind sound brutal! Congrats on your podium win! It may have been a small field, but first out of 10 is fantastic. I usually only podium if there are 3 or less ladies in my age group at the race. LOL
@katharmonic It's nice to support your fellow runner. That is a great cause. So sad about his son though. I'm sure it was a hard day for him and his family.4 -

My internet was going in and out last night, so I didn't post my run. Just didn't feel like dealing with it.
I did my 11 mile long run on the road yesterday. I didn't get out of the house until 8:10. It was 70°F with 94% humidity! At the end, Garmin says it was 82°F with 66% humidity. So, it was definitely a sweat fest again. I did try a timed run/walk of 90s/30s. I liked it, except that the runs inevitably fell on the worst uphill parts of my route. I did pretty good through mile 5, but started fading fast. I figured out later it was probably because of not fueling properly. I got stung on the chin around the 5 mile point too. I think it was a sweat bee that fell into my bra when I swatted it. So, had to stop to get it out of there!
I decided around 7.75 mile point that I needed to get out of the sun, so stopped to let mom know to not expect to see me on the road again. I had faded fast, so walked most of the half mile home. Then, I finished the run, albeit very slowly, doing shortened driveway laps in the shade.
Things I learned from this run:
1) I like the run/walk for 90s/30s for long runs, but need to modify it so that I allow myself to walk up the steep hills.
2) Running on a freshly mowed hayfield is not the best idea - was hoping I could use this as extra distance, but it was just too clumpy and unstable
3) Gatorade and tootsie rolls don't sit well on my stomach
4) I need to do a much better job at fueling before, during, and after a long run
5) Running in a sports bra only is really much cooler, but probably won't do that anytime soon, except on my driveway, like I did yesterday. I guess I joined the sport bra running club too - does it count if you know no one is going to see you?
After I rested about 2 hours, I went down and helped mom do the trimming on her lawn. It was here that I figured out I hadn't eaten enough. I just didn't have the energy to do much. We stopped after 30 minutes to rest and cool off. I ate a big spoon of peanut butter. It didn't help right away, but by the time we were done, I felt much better and actually had some energy.
I got stung by a yellow jacket on my calf, so that every step is painful after that. He got me at just the wrong spot, or the right one, depending on your perspective. It's still swollen and painful this morning. My total exercise yesterday was 3:59:59 minutes and I burned 1,304 calories.5 -

Sorry I’ve been absent this week. I’ve been reading and liking though. My dad has been in the hospital. He is doing much better and came home yesterday. Thankfully, I was able to work from his room in the hospital during the morning so that my mom didn’t have to spend all day there but this meant my morning run didn’t happen for a couple of days but that’s ok. They have sacrificed enough for me during my life. Yesterday, I rode in a charity bike ride. It’s called Tour de Possum. There were about 150 riders and it was a beautiful day for it although it was getting pretty warm when we finished. I did the short route which was 24 miles. There was also a 40 mile route and the field was probably split 50/50. Some serious riders and some like me just out to enjoy the ride.
Great racing @ContraryMaryMary! When I wake to the wind howling, especially in the winter, my first instinct is to roll over and go back to sleep. Congrats on being the 3rd overall female – very impressive!!
I love your list of lessons learned from your long run yesterday @quilteryoyo. Can you tolerate Gu’s? I love the chocolate ones – reminds me of eating cake icing!

@quilteryoyo - Like you observed, I always found regularly timed interval run/walks a bit incongruent with the irregularities of terrain. Made zero sense to run uphill and walk downhill on the premise it would allow me to preserve strength for later on in a long run. On a flat course timed intervals are perfect though! The method is perfectly valid, it's just about executing it per the true intention of it.
What I did for hill training a few years back was find a long run route with a lot of elevation change and set high/low alerts on my watch to alert me when I got to the high end of Z3 (usually going uphill) which allowed me to walk the remainder and either kiss Z4 or go just slightly into it by the time I crested the hill, and then give a low alert in the mid to lower end of Z2 to keep me from walking too easily for too long.
In case that helps at all or gives any ideas.5 -
Congratulations @ContraryMaryMary on your podium wins! I don't envy you running in that wind!
@quilteryoyo way to get that long run in despite all the difficulty. Getting stung twice in one day is awful 😔

However... I do run in shorts and cover my legs on sunscreen. They just don't seem to be affected the same way as my arms and shoulders.
Those shoes are pretty but I would be so sad to get them all dirty as I am sure they would be quickly!
I’ve noticed that too. I catch myself being lazy with the leg sunblock even though I know I need to do it because, yeah, they just don’t get the same level of exposure as the shoulders/back area. It’s just laziness. I mean, I’m already doing my arms and back. It would take like 2 extra minutes to do my legs. I don’t know why I do that!
Those shoes will definitely get dirty fast. Not the color combo I would usually go for, but they were on sale!!3 -
@ContraryMaryMary Good job!!
@quilteryoyo I am terrified of flying stinging insects, especially yellowjackets. I’ve heard their stings are really bad. Hope it feels better soon!2 -

Today's plan was a long run of 8.2 miles, 1 hr 29 min @ 10:50 mi/min. That is not as long as I usually run on Sundays so I started out thinking I might just ditch Hal's plan. I did try to stick to the pace though which was actually kind of hard because it was so hot. In the summer when it is hot I don't usually pay attention to my pace and I run pretty slow. I saw Sunny the donkey today. He was in the house looking out the front window. It was hilarious so I stopped to take a picture, but he saw me and came out on the porch before I could get one. I did notice some chickens in the backyard. I don't know if they are allowed in the house or not. 😆
It was a pretty hot run and the closer I got to the house the more I thought that Hal was probably right. And 8 miles would be good. But when I got home I was at 8.63 and I just couldn't do that so I ran around the block to get to 9 miles. So I ended up with 9 miles in 1 hr 38 minutes at 10:50 mi/min. So even though I went over I felt good about it. And so far after 4 runs with Hal I have an A- and Hal says to keep up the consistency.
And it looks like I surpassed my 100 mile goal today!
Great job on your race @contrarymarymary! I think wind is my least favorite weather to run in. Congratulations on your podium finish!
@quilteryoyo I hope you are feeling ok. Two stings in one day sucks!
@teresa502 I am glad your dad is doing better. Staying with him and giving your mom a break is worth missing a couple of runs.

So who is watching the olympics? I watch every second I can and I really like watching sports I only see during the olympics. As much as I love to see the US win, I often find myself rooting for underdogs from countries who don’t podium as much. Except for Simone Biles, I want to see her dominate! The pride of Houston!6

@Teresa502 Glad your dad is feeling better and out of the hospital. It's so stressful when a parent is sick. The bike ride sounds like fun. I have not tried Gu's. I guess it is time I found some and tried them out.
@kgirlhart I love your stories about Sunny. You are going to have your camera ready as you near his house next time...just in case. Sounds like you had a really nice run. I probably wouldn't have stopped at 8.63 miles either. Congrats on surpassing your 100 mile goal already! The stings did pretty much suck. The first one wasn't too bad, but that yellow jacket...still hurts and my calf has a baseball sized swelling. It is feeling a bit better. I'm going to ice it again tonight.
@martaindale I know I should probably watch it more, but I'm just not into it this year. I do like the gymnastics. I love Simone Biles.2 -
@kgirlhart love that you get to see your donkey so often 🥰 I guess I missed the post where you named him. Sunny is a good name. Nice to see he adopted some chickens too!
