WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the June 2021 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10831839/June-2021-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2021 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

I am going to go with 80miles again and a stretch goal of 90. We have a trip planned to No CA and I don't see the ortho about my arm until mid-month but I am going to keep at it as much as I can and this will keep me motivated.7

I have no plans of stopping any time soon, so count me in.
I've estimated my projected July mileage based on my scheduled running time two different ways and came up with 135 and 136. I thought that seemed a touch high so I checked it against my monthly mileage trends and it is in line with that too. So while I'm tempted to take those numbers, part of me wants to adjust it down a bit between the July heat and the inevitable flattening of the upward trend in my running pace improvements.
Aw, screw it!
It's just an arbitrary number! (that I calculated and verified, but trust me, it's purely arbitrary)
So I'm going with 135! (Really though I will be happy to get mileage of 120 or more)8 -
Thanks @shanaber!
Errr I'm going to run. No idea about distance. Shall I say 120k?
Im supposed to do a HM this month. I signed up for it months ago but motivation has died. I should still be conditioned since I was supposed to run one last week but not sure I care. Donation to charity is fine.11 -
I know I may miss a long run one weekend (at least), so I'm down for 110 miles again.
Thanks@shanaber!9 -
My first time doing this challenge (and I'm very new to running) so I'll aim for 50 miles!13

If I did my math right (🤣🤣🤣) my goal is 125 miles.11

Thank you @shanaber !
My goal is 40 miles for July - I have a scheduled trip in the middle of the month that will break things up a bit, but plan to get a bunch of hiking in that week instead.
Welcome @shayann117 !7 -
200 (minimum) miles for July
Were I to calculate: 13.1 x 31 = 406.1 miles
I will be starting the procedure for implant (tooth) mid July. My prayer is that it does not slow me down.9 -

Seriously! I just burst out laughing, glad I had already finished my pepsi!

I'm a regular in the 100-mile club
Maybe I'll bike or swim, too - if I want?
I've got a flat-ish 30k cross-country race on the 10th, then will aim to up the elevation in training for a mountain race in August. I'm also hopefully going to have some running workshops for kids at a camp I'm working at the end of the month.11 -
In for July - my goal at the moment is just to keep running! Last month involved caretaking full time for my mom, getting her to and from an operation, so much stress that my husband had heart problems, and then someone plowing into the back end of my car. Praying that July is a little easier!
I do expect it to be dangerously hot. We never get many miles in July and August even when life is peachy. But I hope to do a little speed training and increase my distances some in hopes of doing our best at an in-person race Sept 11, which is the West Cancer Center 5k, my husband’s and my Runniversary.11 -
@quilteryoyo wrote: »@AlphaHowls With all of that running, do you have to buy new shoes every month?
Currently:
Mizuno Wave Inspire 14 ~1300+ miles (Started 2/1/2021) M, W, F, Sa
Saucony Cohesion 13 ~1100+ miles (Started 2/2/2021) T, Th, Su
On Deck when my legs/feet tell me to change:
Mizuno Wave Rider 22 (M, W, F, Sa)
Saucony Cohesion 10 (T, Th, Su)

I will stay in the 100 mile club as well. Hopefully I'll do better this time.
July is Sarcoma Awareness month and I typically dedicate my running to my younger sister who passed away from chondrosarcoma in 2014. The main reason I started running was to cope with the grief of losing her and that link between her and the ways my life has changed due to becoming a runner is always on my mind. I will dedicate July again but I am keeping my mileage goals minimal this year because of work and hiking commitments. I am doing a 5k in August for the Sarcoma Foundation too. In any case, I will be thinking of Kelly and those who have fought this cancer during this month of running and supporting the cause of research to advance the few treatments available.11 -

Hey everyone!! I’m increasing my goal from last month just a bit from 50k to 60k. That’s a 5k 3x a week, with a bit of wiggle room to miss a run as long as a add a bit of mileage for a longer run once a week. Nice to see you all here again! 😃10

7 miles to start July. Typical 80F morning, but no wind made it feel so much hotter. Phone said 7mph wind, but not were I was running. I'm sure all this hot running is good training for when it gets finally gets to the perfect 50s in October or November, but that seems like a LONG time away.

7/1 - 6.49 miles, midweek long run (90 mins Z2)
July Total: 6.49 miles
July Goal: 135 miles
Woke up early this morning for the first mid week long run in my new schedule that technically started Sunday. It was humid and while it wasn't raining any more when I started running I still got plenty wet from all of the puddles, sweat, fog, and one path where a stream came over it's banks giving a nice, long stretch of 2-4 inches of water to splash through.10 -
I'm in for 100 miles this month. I had injured my toe on Monday and was waiting to see how it felt before committing to a distance. I ran this morning without pain, so I think taking the last two days off was a good thing.
July 1- 3.5 miles
July Goal - 100 miles
Miles to go - 96.5 miles10 -
I decided based on my schedule and race timing, to do a nice long run today, then go a bit easier for the next week. So I mapped out a 30+ km route, got up before everyone in my family, and set out.
I was blessed with decent weather - first cool and overcast, then hard rain (and I had to eat all my gummies because I needed the bag to protect my phone), then the sun came out, but I was still soaked didn't feel too hot except for about half an hour towards the end. I took it slow with plenty of walk breaks, but adding that extra 8k to what I'm used to was pretty challenging. Oh well, I did it. Goal was 30k under 4 hours, and I made it with about 2 minutes to spare Something is now bugging me in my hip and I'm walking funny, but am doing the stretches and trying to work it out. Should be fine, I hope.
Now time for that huge to-do list I've got on my calendar. Not sure why it all ended up on today 😆11 -
July 1 - 5.62 miles
Hills again today. Temp was 70F with 95% humidity. Looking forward to tomorrow's rest day.9 -
7/1 - 3.02
3.02 of 65 miles
@shanaber thanks for setting us up.
I'm going to say 65 miles with a stretch goal of 75. Skip and I are going out of town for a week and I'm not sure how much running I'll be able to get in while we are gone.
@WandaVaughn I'm tagging you here so you come back.
Oh my gosh you all know I'm a sucker for new shoes, I'm also a sucker for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation for cancer research. After Gabe passed away 2 years ago Brooks put out a pair of shoes to raise money for the Foundation about a year later and again this week for the 2 year anniversary they did again. I had to get them. The first picture is the first shoe and the second is the current shoe.12 -
7-1 4k tempo
July Total: 4k
July Goal: 150k
Today is a golf day, but since I rode in a cart around the hilly course we play every two weeks and it was cloudy, mid 70s F and a touch less humid, decided I'd do a run. Started out feeling strong and went waaaaaay too fast for the first 2 ks and then faded to the point I cut it at 4k. Still, for an unplanned run, it went pretty well.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:

7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH
9/18 5k Run and Roll, Aurora, OH10 -
Just started running a couple months ago; used to really not like it and have since started to actually enjoy it! That being said, I don’t go very far or very fast, but my goal for July is 20 miles 😊 Looking forward to being a part of this group!13

I’m joining with the goal of running 30 miles and hiking 8010
