Today's run was decent even though it was warm and humid. Not sure of the dew points (haven't looked) but it is about to rain and lows have been in the 70's, so by 8am it was probably mid to upper 70's and humid as can be.5 -
@penguinmama87 I'm with you on the team no yuck bugs and winter. I absolutely hate winter, but after being greeting by a massive spider on my front porch this morning, I'm ready for them to all just go away! What area do you live in to get the hilly conditions? I'm in Nebraska and we get a good mix of both, and it gets really oppressive here with heat in July and August. Yuck.
I'm in PA, so very hilly (really more mountainous, though our mountains are definitely not as intense as further West). Hot and very humid summers and cold winters, though neither are truly oppressive. Purely in terms of climate, I actually wouldn't mind living a bit further north, where we could get away without A/C and would have more snow (I figure if it's cold it might as well look pretty too). But we live where my husband grew up and I really do think of it as the best place in the world.7 -

Welcome @Zoomie402 12 hour shifts are tough. I’m also coming back from a foot injury so same here, slow and steady coming back. I laughed so hard at the cats, I gets lots of stray dogs with me, but never cats.
@sweetdaisy13 regarding the knee pain, have you added more mileage than usual? How many miles are on your shoes? My daughter went through the same type of hurt while running and sleeping and she had tendinitis in both knees, I’d keep an eye on it for sure.
@quilteryoyo glad you explained the pounding situation to the NP sounds like a good plan of action if it happens again. Glad you had a chance to visit your cousin and he is doing well.
@WhatMeRunning glad your brother is on the road to recovery
@kgirlhart I’m laughing too hard about the donkey, that is crazy, he’s just like hey there! He really needs a straw hat with fake flowers, no idea why just seems appropriate. We have lots of donkeys in fields here because they keep the coyotes out of the fields and away from the livestock. Nice size fox.
@Avidkeo you know I love watching girls running XC!!! Great form on both of them.
We don’t have scorpions here but until I got rid of my pool and fish pond I’d find black widows a lot. Ugh!

@WhatMeRunning I'm definitely going to stop the squats and wall sit isometric exercises I do for a while, to see if my knees stop aching.
@skippygirlsmom I have 3 pairs of running shoes on the go at the moment: Trail, Road and Barefoot shoes. It's definitely not the shoes causing knee pain.
Also, I've not really changed my running mileage/terrain so have to rule that out.
Back in November, I fell badly during a run as our Local Authority has the bright idea (no pun intended!) of turning off street lights during winter to save money and it was dark and I went flying over a raised paving slab and cut my knee open.
My knee has not been 100% since then, but it hurts more at night sleeping than it does at any other time. Running seems to ease it. I'm starting to think I may have the start of arthritis in my knees. Both of my parents have it too.7 -

July cumulative:

2,630/10,000 feet of elevation5 -
@sweetdaisy13 injuries like that are rough! There are so many reasons why turning off street lights seem dangerous, and tripping hazards are just the tip of that iceberg. I have arthritis in my right wrist that I once believed was carpal tunnel. Hopefully some rest will set you back on track.3
-
Thank you @Zoomie402, I'll continue running as it's more of an ache than a hurting pain when I run. I'll change my strength and conditioning workouts so that I take a break from squats and wall sits. I may incorporate some resistance band work and it will be a case of trial and error to see what works.6

5 miles on trails this morning. Humid but not too hot. Ate so many spiders. One went in my eye socket and my husband had to pick it off my eyelid - turns out it was an arrowhead spider, they are harmless and kinda interesting looking, their butts are triangle shaped.
Our trailhead looked like this! Can you believe! This doesn’t even begin to capture it. Just fireworks and beer trash everywhere. People are so irresponsible. And the worst of it is, the trailhead isn’t very large and sits in the middle of dense underbrush and woods, so they were detonating the fireworks over the woods. If a fire started it would take out a hundred acres and no emergency vehicles would be able to get to it. I enjoy fireworks but I am half past sick of the people who use them.5 -
Nice running @Scott6255 !
@penguinmama87 I like Zaxby's. It's a lot better than "normal" fast food. It's worth a try if you are near one. If you are ever in upper E. TN, the place to try to find is Pals. Most people really like it. I like both their burgers and their chipped ham.
Thanks all with regards to my cardiology visit and my cousin. Love the care and concern of this group.
Nice running @sweetdaisy13 ! Hope you knee starts feeling better.
@rheddmobile Great job on the run. I hate running into spider webs. I always feel them crawling on me when they aren't. I've seen the arrowhead spiders before. They are pretty neat looking, but wouldn't want one in my eye! All of that trash is beyond ridiculous!4 -
7-1 2.1 miles running and 1.0 mile walking (Hill Repeats after cutting cedars for almost 1.5 hours)
7-2 0.0 miles running but 1.0 mile walking on treadmill (also played doubles tennis this morning)
7-3 9.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (easy pace, but not an easy run)
7-4 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking laps on the driveway
7-5 2.3 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (also played doubles tennis for almost 2 hours, outdoors)
7-6 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking
7-7 1.0 mile running, 1.0 mile walking (fast mile)
MT = 14.4/70 miles running: 7.0/31miles walking
I worked the 6:30 - 3:30 shift at daycare today. I was in the 3-4 year old classroom. That can be a tough age. Today wasn't horrible, but wasn't easy either. Too much drama when they don't get their way.
I'm trying to get used to going with mom to church on Wednesday nights. It's been a really long time since I have gone on my own, but she likes the person who teaches at her church, so I try to take her. I like him too, so don't mind going, but I do have to take that into account when trying to get my run in. Today, I was only home for 1.5 hours between work and leaving for church. I am working 7:30-4:30 tomorrow, so will be getting up early again. I wanted to get in some running, but knew I wouldn't have time for the scheduled 30 min easy run. Instead, I decided to do my normal half mile of warm up and cool down walks and run one fast mile on the treadmill. I had hoped I'd be able to get a PR, which is 9:20 min, according to Garmin, or at least under 10 minutes. I just didn't have it in me today. I had to run at 5.5 mph for a couple of minutes and that did me in. My time was 10:05 minutes. Close, but no cigar.

I was up a little late last night so getting up early for a mid-week long run seemed like a dumb idea. So I needed to choose some other workout run instead. I wasn't too shot up about doing a second threshold run this week, or speedwork either. But hills sounded like a great idea (says nobody ever except weirdo runners). And it was a great idea! This was my first hilly run this year so I expected I would die, but I made it.

@sweetdaisy13 it’s hard when you get an injury like that. Hope they feel better soon, I don’t know much about arthritis is there something you can take? I can’t believe they turn the lights out. I was hurt (4 broken ribs) a couple years back, same type of thing, I joined a Running with God group with my friends, we ran in the neighborhood by the church and my couldn’t find my headlamp in my bag so I was coming back into the parking lot in the dark and I was like I know the speed bump is here and next thing I knew I was on the ground.
@rheddmobile what a shame on the trailhead awful. Ugh on the spider. It’s funny you mention the spiders because I ran alone Monday on the trails and I was like dang where is my web catcher Skip ha ha
@quilteryoyo 10:05 is a nice mile time, you’ll get there. I was thinking on my run today I’m anywhere from 13:15 to 14:30 for the pace, I used to be 9:00ish. Makes me sad, but then again I’m out there moving.
@kgirlhart I’m still giggling about the donkey
@pfeiferlindsey good luck on the half
@WhatMeRunning woohoo for surviving a hill workout

Thanks everyone for the condolences on my [latest] race cancelation. Perhaps it's for the best, as I've come down with something (head cold - symptoms don't match you-know-what) and have been taking it easy at home yesterday and today. Hopefully tomorrow will be better Despite all of the curve-balls, there's actually a lot of good things going on in my life, too, and if I was going to get sick this month, this is probably the best week for it.
@kgirlhart the donkey with his own house is a GREAT "strangest thing seen while running".4 -

Today's run was another hot, sweaty, slow 5 miles. Not really much to say about it. I did see the donkey again today. He was outside in his yard. I still can't quite get over seeing him standing inside the house.

I’m trying not to get too down on my low miles this week. I’m still balancing life after getting back from vacation Monday, but I know I can’t stay in this rut. The upside, I’ve almost lost the vacation weight, my foot hasn’t been bothering me too much, and I’m still moving by going to classes at the Y 😃

@Tramboman hope you had a good golf game. I tried to golf once. It was really tragic for the green 🤣
@pfeiferlindsey good luck on your run Saturday! I love that in person races are starting up again. I miss that.
@WhatMeRunning nice job on the hills! There’s a few doozies in my neighborhood. I used to be able to get up all of them without issue. I know once I can do that again, it’ll feel amazing!
@granitepeak45 a 12 mile hike?!?! Well done!
@skippygirlsmom nice 4 miles! Was it a good run?
@polskagirl01 feel better soon! Hopefully it’s passes quickly for you.
@kgirlhart you should name the donkey 😄5 -

Yeah, I've been MIA for a few months, (and likely will be again....) but since y'all are rapidly approaching the coast of Big Island, thought I'd stop in to help you ashore.
You are coming in at Laupahoehoe (leaf shaped smooth lava) Park on the Hamakua Coast of Big Island. The park is great for winter whale watching and sitting and feeling the breeze (ok, GALE) in your hair!
Laupahoehoe is an old plantation (sugar cane) town.It is the site of a tragic Tsunami in 1946 which devastated the school and killed many of its children. After the wave, the town and school were relocated to the top of the cliff. Don’t miss the Tsunami memorial–a sober reminder that though we live in a paradise…..bad things can-and do- happen.
Climb the winding road to the top of the cliff (about 500 feet) and you come to highway 19-the top half of the circle road around the island (hwy 11 is the bottom half). If you go right, you wind through jungle, eucalyptus forests, open grassy hills. At Honoka'a, you can turn off to see Waipio Valley. The road to the valley floor drops 2000 feet in 3/4 miles.
Keep going west on Hwy 19 and you eventually come to Waimea/Kamuela: site of Parker Ranch, the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US-set on 160,000 acres of rolling green hills
If you turn left at hwy 19, you will first go through Laupahoehoe town, and in 5 miles come to Ninole, home of the (second) smallest post office in North America, and me.
Mai Tais are waiting for you on the lanai!
Happy Anniversary tomorrow @shanaber

*So, my 2021 resolution is to hike/run all 193 (or 195 depending on your source) countries of the world this year. This could be difficult, since I don’t have a passport. But YouTube to the rescue! I have been using the site to take train “trips” recently, and have found them strangely motivating. Why not use Youtube vlogs to hike/run the world (and learn something about each country)?

Great to see you again @HonuNui, and thanks for the wonderful your of Honolulu! That will be the only way I will get there!
Yuck @RunsOnEspresso, lows in the 90s?!! I thought it was stupid hot in Texas. But at least it's a dry heat, right? 😉
@Zoomie402 don't fret about ramping up slowly, that's actually a good thing. Patience is the hardest lesson to learn for runners.5 -

Woke up to tired legs and rain this morning. I may go out for a walk later but I think I will rest from running. A race report from last night is in the spoiler below.
Good luck with your race this weekend @pfeiferlindsey!
Great to see you @HonuNui and thanks for all the pictures, info and the Mai Tai! You are really moving down the alphabet! The Bear Race is a 5 mile run from Linville, NC to the top of Grandfather Mountain. A sag van picks up any runners who do not make it to the 3-mile aid station within 60 minutes of the start. I knew this would be challenge going into it but I did not realize that every single step was uphill – no level spots, no downhill, all uphill. The race starts at 3640’ elevation and finishes at 5181’ elevation.
Two friends and I met at 4:15 pm and drove to Linville. It rained on us during the drive and when we first parked at the start area but it had stopped raining by 6:15 pm. The temp was around 70F. The race was scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. We picked up our packets and hung out talking to friends in the parking area making our way towards the start area about 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Many runners were warming up on the side roads. There was a guy with a megaphone at the start/packet pick-up area asking runners to get to the top as quickly as possible because high winds were moving in at the top and they were worried about runner safety. I guess they were really worried because the start horn sounded about 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time catching many runners by surprise.
We started on a paved road but shortly after turned off onto a side gravel road and was on it for the first couple of miles. The race is held during the first day of the Highland Games Festival. The route took us through the campground and the area where the games are held around mile 2 1/2. The festival participants were out in their kilts and a couple of guys were playing the bagpipes as we ran through this part of the course. Lots of rambunctious cheering in this section of the course!
After passing through the campground we ran up a grass hill and on to the paved road up the mountain. This section seemed never ending with lots of curves and switchbacks. There were unmanned water stations at mile 2 and mile 3. It started raining again on me around mile 2 ½ and continued for about 20 minutes. At that point, I really didn’t mind getting wet. I was already wet from sweat so the rain was no biggie.
The last couple of miles were mostly walking with some intermittent jogging when I could. I crossed the finish line at 1:12 and placed 579 out of 653 finishers just happy that I wasn’t the last one up! The guy who came in first finished in 31 minutes at a 6:22 pace! How in the world do people do that???? The first female finisher came in at 40:58 minutes (8:02 pace).
The winds were really high and blowing a rainy mist at the finish area. You could check a bag at the beginning and it was supposed to be waiting for you at the end but the van was late getting up there and I had to wait about 10 or 15 minutes before I got my bag which had a bottle of water, snack and long sleeve shirt in it. Shuttles were provided back down the mountain but did not start until the last runner crossed the finish line. We didn’t get on the first wave of shuttles down the mountain so had to wait about 45 minutes for the return shuttles. Thankfully, they kept the gift shop/museum area open for us to shelter in because according to one official, the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 7 minutes and the winds were very forceful. I got home around midnight.
There were 653 runners who completed the race. The race is capped at 800 runners and it always sells out within minutes of registration opening so I don’t know if the other registrants were no-shows or didn’t reach the cut off in time. For my efforts, I got a finisher’s medal and a really ugly brown shirt (this makes the second ugly brown shirt I’ve got this year in races – is that the new color?) Not sure I would do this race again but I’m glad I got to experience it this year.11 -

Patience is the hardest lesson to learn for runners.
Been around 40% humidity mostly. Last weekend after a monsoon rolled through we had 80% humidity. THAT was the worst.4
