As some of you know Skip is training for a sprint tri so after her swim lesson this morning we decided to bike instead of run. It’s nice to be young, she got home at 1:30 this morning but was up and out the door at 4:30 am to meet her coach.
Thanks @Zoomie402 I’m starting to feel more and more like myself, way slow but that’s okay and my ankle is really tight but it’ll take time. I’m still about 4 months ahead of what the doctor thought I’d be.
Hi @HonuNui you have been missed. Great pictures and history, thank you. I like a good Mai Tai. I was in Honolulu about 4 years ago I had no idea about the memorial.
@Teresa502 when I started reading your race report and I went 3 miles in 60 minutes big deal, then I read the next sentence, whoa crap. The crowd support sounds great. Wow on the guy who won, seriously some people are just goats or superheroes or something. Sounds like they didn’t quite have things under control for the end, that drop in temp when you are wet from sweat or rain is horrible. You did a great job and awesome bling – though I agree on the color of the shirt! The pictures are just amazing.

Super amazing job on your race @Teresa502!!!!!!!! You are a total beast!!4

July 4 – 3.01 miles

Woke up to tired legs and rain this morning. I may go out for a walk later but I think I will rest from running. A race report from last night is in the spoiler below.
Good luck with your race this weekend @pfeiferlindsey!
Great to see you @HonuNui and thanks for all the pictures, info and the Mai Tai! You are really moving down the alphabet! The Bear Race is a 5 mile run from Linville, NC to the top of Grandfather Mountain. A sag van picks up any runners who do not make it to the 3-mile aid station within 60 minutes of the start. I knew this would be challenge going into it but I did not realize that every single step was uphill – no level spots, no downhill, all uphill. The race starts at 3640’ elevation and finishes at 5181’ elevation.
Two friends and I met at 4:15 pm and drove to Linville. It rained on us during the drive and when we first parked at the start area but it had stopped raining by 6:15 pm. The temp was around 70F. The race was scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. We picked up our packets and hung out talking to friends in the parking area making our way towards the start area about 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Many runners were warming up on the side roads. There was a guy with a megaphone at the start/packet pick-up area asking runners to get to the top as quickly as possible because high winds were moving in at the top and they were worried about runner safety. I guess they were really worried because the start horn sounded about 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time catching many runners by surprise.
We started on a paved road but shortly after turned off onto a side gravel road and was on it for the first couple of miles. The race is held during the first day of the Highland Games Festival. The route took us through the campground and the area where the games are held around mile 2 1/2. The festival participants were out in their kilts and a couple of guys were playing the bagpipes as we ran through this part of the course. Lots of rambunctious cheering in this section of the course!
After passing through the campground we ran up a grass hill and on to the paved road up the mountain. This section seemed never ending with lots of curves and switchbacks. There were unmanned water stations at mile 2 and mile 3. It started raining again on me around mile 2 ½ and continued for about 20 minutes. At that point, I really didn’t mind getting wet. I was already wet from sweat so the rain was no biggie.
The last couple of miles were mostly walking with some intermittent jogging when I could. I crossed the finish line at 1:12 and placed 579 out of 653 finishers just happy that I wasn’t the last one up! The guy who came in first finished in 31 minutes at a 6:22 pace! How in the world do people do that???? The first female finisher came in at 40:58 minutes (8:02 pace).
The winds were really high and blowing a rainy mist at the finish area. You could check a bag at the beginning and it was supposed to be waiting for you at the end but the van was late getting up there and I had to wait about 10 or 15 minutes before I got my bag which had a bottle of water, snack and long sleeve shirt in it. Shuttles were provided back down the mountain but did not start until the last runner crossed the finish line. We didn’t get on the first wave of shuttles down the mountain so had to wait about 45 minutes for the return shuttles. Thankfully, they kept the gift shop/museum area open for us to shelter in because according to one official, the temperature dropped 20 degrees in 7 minutes and the winds were very forceful. I got home around midnight.
There were 653 runners who completed the race. The race is capped at 800 runners and it always sells out within minutes of registration opening so I don’t know if the other registrants were no-shows or didn’t reach the cut off in time. For my efforts, I got a finisher’s medal and a really ugly brown shirt (this makes the second ugly brown shirt I’ve got this year in races – is that the new color?) Not sure I would do this race again but I’m glad I got to experience it this year.
Great race!!!!!1 -
You guys are the best! Even though I don't always feel worthy of being called a runner (I know...if you run, you are a runner...) and most of you can run circles around me, you still say good things and make me feel good about my effort. Each of you inspire me daily in your own special way.6
-
Wow, @Teresa502 that sounds like a tough race - a bear for sure. You are a powerhouse to get through that. I felt cold for you thinking about waiting around at the end. You should definitely feel proud of yourself for that one! Well done!
@HonuNui great to see you and thanks for the tour. So beautiful. I don't really care for mai tais that much but when in Honolulu I would surely give them a go!

I haven't posted for a few days, sorry not to have kept up. It's been a tough week. I started my new role at work and it is exhausting being the one in charge. I also had a relationship end suddenly over the weekend and the emotions of that have not helped anything. At least being very busy right now is probably a good thing. In any case, running has been a bit more challenging but also a necessary coping tool. I'm not really sure the last I posted but Tuesday I didn't get a run in, Wednesday was a 30-minute tempo run at HM/marathon group, Thursday was just a treadmill warmup before strength training, and today was a much-needed morning run wiht a friend.
Tomorrow I'm going to try to get my HM for the month done. Sunday I'm going hiking, which will probably also be about 13+ miles for two more high peaks. Staying busy, staying exhausted13 -
@HonuNui Thanks for the welcome to Hawaii!
@Teresa502 Great race! I can’t imagine that much elevation, we usually get about 100 ft in 5 miles around here.
Had to take my mom to a doctor’s appointment so wasn’t able to run today. I don’t feel bad about it since it was so hot and rainy that it was steaming. Then for a while it was cold and rainy. Yuck! I did get in a belly dance class after I got home. Hoping to run tomorrow.7 -
Reading and liking/hugging.
Still sick. Hope to run tomorrow...8 -

Today's run was another hot, sweaty, slow 5 miles. Not really much to say about it. I did see the donkey again today. He was outside in his yard. I still can't quite get over seeing him standing inside the house.

Still here. Am having internet issues again. I'll try to catch up when I get that fixed. For now, I'm using my Verizon Jetpack. It seems to be doing okay this morning, but you never know with that either. Signal here is awful. Plus, I don't have unlimited data, so have to be careful as to how much I use it for browsing/talking to you all.
I'm heading out in a few minutes to try to get in a 7 mile long run. The humidity is close to 100%, so this may not be pretty.11 -

Mostly sunny, mid 50s F, and variable winds today. Legs were tight at the (slow) beginning, but seemed fine for the race paced last k. Just hope I can put most of it together for next week's race.

I was so tired last night when I posted my run that I didn't realize that I copied and pasted Thursdays run again so here is yesterday's post.
Just a quick 2 miles today. I'm doing a Streak challenge for Run the Edge so I am trying to get at least 1 mile in per day for July. Walking counts, but so far I have run every day in July except last Saturday. Not sure if I will run or walk tomorrow. It will probably depend on how hot it is when I get up.
I will probably just go for a walk today. It is already 80° and I am a little sore from yoga yesterday so I think I will take it easy today.
Great job on your race @teresa502! It sounds very challenging.
Great to see you @honunui! Thanks for the tour of Hawaii. I was just wondering about you the other day. I always love your snorkeling pictures.
@katharmonic Sorry you've had a rough week. I hope things start looking up soon.
@avidkeo I hope you feel better soon.

Nothing like a long run with lots of supportive friends to make you feel better. I mean, a lot of drinks with these supportive friends might have been nicer and more relaxing, but it did make me feel better. It was only 64 degrees when we started but the humidity was like 90% so it was definitely a hard running day. We took it pretty slowly and people came and went for different parts of it. I was grateful for the company in getting my July half done for the HM a month challenge.

It's not binary. Long runs can be followed by lots of drinks, and the right drinks could be loosely considered hydration. Keep holding your head high!!!6 -
@HonuNui beautiful photos! I'd love to visit Hawaii someday. I'll be sure to have a Mai Tai when I do.
@Teresa502 Wow! What a run! Hills are not my favorite, but I can't seem to stop trying to conquer them. Very impressive!
@katharmonic I'm so sorry heart ache sucks, but I'm glad to hear you have friends to surround yourself with and that your run helped. That is a lot of humidity! After that, you deserve to have a drink.
@AlphaHowls Happy MFP Anniversary! Congrats on that long run as well....especially with the IBS and gout. Way to push through it!
I'm working another 12 today (second day in a row). Nothing yesterday as we got a really wicked storm coming through by the time I got off. I'm at a center that's a little slower today and we do a nice job of rotating through breaks, so as long as it's not blistering hot out, I'll get some miles in while at work today.7 -
@katharmonic great long run. Glad you had so many friends supporting you!
@AlphaHowls happy 6 year anniversary! You are amazing!2 -
@pfeiferlindsey I hope your half went well. Looking forward to reading about it.
Nice job on the hilly run on Thursday @WhatMeRunning . I did hills that day too and really "enjoyed" it.
@skippygirlsmom I think you are doing awesome considering your injury. If I recall correctly, when it first happened you were told at least 6 months before running again and look at you now!
It's hard to get back into the routine after vacation @Zoomie402 . You're doing great.
Great to see you @HonuNui ! I was wondering where you have been. Sorry to see that you were sick back in April. Glad you are better. Thanks so much for the tour of your little area of the world. I'm like @Scott6255 - that's probably the only way I'll ever get there. It looks lovely. Sad about the tsunami. I remember that tragedy. Thanks for the Mai Tai!
@Teresa502 You did great in your race! I can't imagine running that one. I also don't see how anyone could run that hill at the paces of the winners. You're pictures are great.

@katharmonic Sorry about the relationship and tough time at work. Sounds like running is helping maintain your sanity. Enjoy your hike. Look forward to the pictures. Nice way to get your HM run in - with various friends joining in for parts of it.
@Avidkeo Hope you feel better!
Nice running @sweetdaisy13 !
You continue to amaze me @AlphaHowls ! Happy 6 year MFP anniversary!
All caught up. I'll post my update and runs for the last 3 days later. Heading out to a picnic at the church I used to attend to welcome their new pastor. After running 7 miles, I can eat guilt free.

July 3 – 8.07 miles
July 4 – 3.01 miles
July 6 – 5.03 miles
July 8 – 4.82 miles

So humid this morning. I met a friend for 5 miles at 7:00 am. Afterwards, I walked 2.8 for a cool down although I was still pouring sweat at the end of it. Hiking up to Mt. LeConte in the Smoky Mountains tomorrow, spending the night and hiking back down on Monday. Thanks again to everyone for all the support and kind words on my race! You’re the reason I keep coming here!
@katharmonic – starting any new position at work is always stressful but I know you will settle in and be awesome at it quickly! Hugs on the relationship woes and congrats on the HM today. Can’t wait to hear about your hike!
Hope you are better soon @Avidkeo.
@sweetdaisy13 – you would love the Bear Run!
@AlphaHowls – You are a running machine!
@quilteryoyo – Sorry for the internet woes. Wasn’t that humidity awful this morning? Enjoy the picnic!

Went out for a long run this morning. Managed 8.5k. Still sick. Sigh. Getting better though10

7-6 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking
7-7 1.0 mile running, 1.0 mile walking (fast mile)
7-8 2.6 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (Hill Repeats - 6 months post surgery)
7-9 0.0 mile running, 1.0 mile walking (hot and humid)
7-10 7.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (easy pace, very humid)
MT = 24.0/70 miles running: 10.0/31miles walking
I worked at daycare from 7:30 - 4:30 on Thursday. I got home at 5:30, so went out to do my run at 5:45. It was 77°F with 74% humidity. Thursday's schedule called for Hill Repeats. I was supposed to do 5 minutes zone 1, 5 min zone 2, 6 x (1 min uphill zone 5/2 min recovery zone 1), 5 min zone 1. It was threatening to storm, so ran on my driveway. The hill I normally use isn't long enough for 1 min, so used that hill, slowed for a short flat and downhill portion, then sprinted up the next shorter hill. So, while I didn't follow the plan exactly, I feel I met the intent. Max pace on the last up hill portion was 9:01 min/mile - not sustainable, at all. It felt good to get it done. I noticed on my way back up the driveway today that, had I started at the gate instead of where I did, that first hill could have possibly taken a minute to run up. Don't know why I didn't think about that on Thursday. Also, it was the 6th month anniversary of my open heart surgery, so I ran enough to make 2.6 mile. Thought about 6 miles that morning, but didn't have either the time nor the inclination when I got home.
Yesterday, I had daycare mandatory training from 8:30 - 3:30. Ran some errands and got home at 5. Had planned on a treadmill walk, but decided I really needed at least a little outdoor time, so walked on the driveway instead. According to Garmin, it was 77°F with 83% humidity. Glad I was outside, but it was really humid.
Today, I had planned to get up and out by 7am, but, when I looked at the weather last night, there wasn't going to be much of a difference in the weather at 8 am. I decided I needed the sleep more, so didn't get out until 8:30. It was 73°F with 89% humidity. The run really wasn't too bad, but there wasn't a dry stitch on my clothes when I was finished. So. Much. Sweat.
The scheduled run was 7 miles, easy pace. Like I said, there was a lot of sweat, but I was determined to make it a not horrible run. I wound up stopping twice at mom's to talk a few minutes during the run. The first time she had company I wanted to see/talk to. This is the person who invited us to the picnic, which was really good, btw. I also talked to my neighbor with Alzheimer's who was out on her porch. I walked when I felt like it, stopped to take a few pictures, was glad a couple of times when I needed to stop for a car to pass, but overall, it was an okay run. My average HR was 145, so I'm happy with that.
Things I saw on my run this morning under the spoiler.
I think he thought this was his good side.
Pretty flowers
Close up of the flowers. I'm not sure, but these may be a money plant. If so, they are pretty, but not native and very invasive.
I did notice that both times after I stopped at mom's and started back out, that my HR spiked to around 175/170 then settled down to the 140's after a couple of minutes. Does that happen to anyone else? Do you think it is real or a Garmin glitch?
4 -
@Avidkeo Glad you are feeling some better. Don't overdo.2

Life is continuing to kick my *kitten*, but at least I got a run in. Now I am completely failing to do meal prep work and grocery shopping for the next week on my one day off because I chose to do a long run instead, and I’m kind of wondering what everyone else would do if I suddenly had to go to the hospital or something because the whole operation would fall apart, and I am all out of flips to give. Someone, lend me some flips please, I need at least two!
Oh well. The world will not suddenly come to an end if everyone has to eat reheated spaghetti for one day.
Anyway I would say it was a nice run but it was kind of appalling, very hot and humid, even the breeze was hot. I really feel for my friends out west right now with record temperatures, this is not that bad at least! I wanted to get at least 10k running and I think I did, more or less, with enough walking to make 10 miles, which I think is my first tenner of 2021. This has been a kitten of a year for me!
Just running that long and not worrying about trying to make it someplace on time to do stuff for other people felt AMAZING, so much so that even though I feel as if I ought to feel guilty I don’t. We also went out to eat afterwards which we haven’t been allowed to do in a year and a half. First covid and then my mom got sick and I haven’t had more than an hour or so away.
Something’s got to give and today I decided I was tired of that something always being me.13 -
Hugs @rheddmobile ! Glad you got in a long run and decided to take care of yourself. If I could send you a flip, I would, but it doesn't sound like you really need nor want one. I do hope things get better for you soon.1
-
Congratulations on your anniversary @AlphaHowls
Good for you for taking some time for yourself @rheddmobile

I'm on day 4 of no run. First 2 were planned rest days. Yesterday and today woke up with no energy and upset stomach. Tried Yesterday got half a mile and turned around. Didn't even try today7
