@skippygirlsmom You are doing great. Looks like a really nice day. Love the waterfalls and you are so brave to climb up and down those rocks after your fall. Glad everything went well.
@martaindale I'm glad I don't have to deal with scorpions. I have heard they're sting is really painful. Be sure to check your shoes before you put them on.
Thanks @Scott6255 !

Or snakes. Or coyotes. Or skunks. Or any of the other bitey stingy stinky critters everyone here seems to encounter on a daily basis.
Growing up in NZ makes you soft. All I have to worry about is gnats. I hate gnats. Got one in my eye early on in a run a few days ago which was horrid. I kept thinking I could feel it then told myself I was looking for excuses to stop running. I assumed it had scratched my eyelid which is why I had some discomfort so, told myself off, tried to ignore it and kept on running. Imagine my surprise when I pulled down my lower eyelid in front of the mirror at home only to find the little bug there!
Don't forget snails. Those things can be deadly.
OK maybe not deadly but definitely unpleasant to step on!3 -

Not encountered snails while running, yet, but do recall a run a few years ago with an unfathomably large number of dead worms...2 -
Thought I had 5 miles today. Was happy it was only 4.

@ContraryMaryMary I'm not a fan of gnats either. I hate getting them in my eye or having one fly right into the back of your throat. Yuck. BTW, I have found the best way to remove a gnat from my eye pain free is to wet my fingertip and touch the bug. It'll stick to your finger and the moisture keeps it from hurting when you do.

Hazy sunshine; mid 70s F; humid, with a zephyr of a breeze from the southeast. Heard my first two cicadas of the year today -- I know those of you who live in Brood X country wouldn't mind if you didn't hear them again for awhile.
I have no use for creepy crawly bitey stingy things either.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:
6/26 Direction Up 5k, Solon, OH 31:48 chip; 31:59 Garmin; 2d male 65 and over
7/17 Run of the Ox 5k, Mantua, OH
9/18 5k Run and Roll, Aurora, OH6 -
@ContraryMaryMary and @Avidkeo you're missing out on all the fun with no natural predators. Maybe we could convince a stoat or wild pig to chase you next time you're out
I'm not avoiding this thread... just, ok maybe I was. They canceled my race for this weekend. The cross-country style 30k. Something about not enough runners signed up to cover their costs. So now apparently organizers feel it's acceptable to cancel at the last minute for non-COVID reasons, too. Sigh. That's about half of my recent sign-ups, didn't even happen. We knew some organizers weren't going to make it, but it's no fun finding out which ones, after I've signed up and done all of the training for their races. OK. Rant over. Done feeling sorry for myself. I'm thinking a half-day trip to the mountains this weekend is in order
I already have a route planned. And I added a 10k to my schedule of "maybe this will happen" races. Moving on.
9k relaxed-pace run today. It was too hot to try to go fast. Sounds like some of the girls want to meet up later to run in the forest, so maybe I'll do that, too. If I can get some work done first.
It sure is pretty here. July Goal 100 miles (stretch goal 185k)
"40 weeks of 40K" - 28 Weeks DONE! / 17 weeks left to complete the challenge
Upcoming races:
August 1: Grywicka 10k (forest trail, kids' races too!)
August 14: Bieg Zbóju 25km (mountain trail, 1400m elevation)9 -
7/1 - 6.49 miles, midweek long run (90 mins Z2)
7/4 - 1.54 miles, aborted long run (20 mins Z2)
7/6 - 3.71 miles, threshold run (30 mins Z4, 15 mins Z2 (warm-up and cool-down))
July Total: 11.74 miles
July Goal: Originally 135 miles, but will take any number greater than zero
No run yesterday (or any other exercise for that matter) as it was apparently my brothers turn to go to the ER and needed me to give him a ride home. Spent a good part of the day making sure he was OK before leaving, and catching up.
Today I was able to go out for a scheduled threshold run. That went really well. I felt like I may have been slower during the warm-up, but in the end wound up with my best overall pace yet this year. Taking whatever I can get in July, since so far I seem to only be able to run on half of the days!

Failed 4x1 @ Marathon Pace this morning. I did 3x1 and only hit goal pace on #2. The first one I was close but just a tad slow. The third one included some walking so I was like 2 minutes slower than goal pace. I didn't even attempt the 4th.

Hi! I’m jumping right into the middle of this! I’m not new to running, but I’ve seriously slacked off the past year and a half. My goal right now is more focused on getting miles in, be it walking or running (getting myself conditioned to run again). I just got back from vacation, so with the exception of this week, my goal is to get in 3 miles every day. I work 12 hour shifts, so some days may lead to longer runs.
I injured my foot running Dopey in 2020, so a slow and steady start with cross training is important for me right now.15 -
Welcome @Zoomie402! 12 hour shifts are tough, especially 12 on / 12 off. My son is currently working that (night shift). Taking it slow and steady is the right strategy.2

6.2 mile run with an average pace of 9:05 min per mile. My knees have been hurting whilst sleeping and I felt it on my run. I've no idea why they hurt whilst I'm in bed, I can only assume that I move about a lot or keep my knees bent. Or maybe I'm getting arthritis.
I've been doing some wall sits and squats as part of strength and conditioning, but am going to stop these particular exercises for a week or so to see if it makes a difference.
July cumulative:
19.4/100 miles
2,002/10,000 feet of elevation8 -
July 1 – 5.62 miles
July 3 – 8.07 miles
July 4 – 3.01 miles
July 5 – 5.03 miles
We have a floating holiday from work today so I left the house this morning with a very loose agenda on my mind. I ran a new trail that I have admired from a distance while driving on the interstate and have wanted to run. It wasn’t a technical trail but a paved, city trail. It was fairly flat so my pace was a teeny bit faster than normal. After that I went blueberry picking. The berries are just beginning to ripen so it took a while to fill my container. The area was in the mountains of North Carolina and it was a beautiful morning to pick berries.
@skippygirls mom – Beautiful falls! I bet the water was so cold but refreshing after the hike.
@martaindale – I’ve never encountered a scorpion. Can you spray or treat the house with something to kill them? Or at least make them vacate the premises?
Gosh @polskagirl01 – that’s enough to make you stop signing up and training for races. What lovely, green fields in your picture!
Hope your brother is doing ok @WhatMeRunning
@RunsonEspresso – Maybe you just need to adjust your marathon pace goal.
Welcome @Zoomie402!
Squats are hard on the knees @sweetdaisy13. Hope your pain leaves as swiftly as your running pace!

7-1 2.1 miles running and 1.0 mile walking (Hill Repeats after cutting cedars for almost 1.5 hours)
7-2 0.0 miles running but 1.0 mile walking on treadmill (also played doubles tennis this morning)
7-3 9.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (easy pace, but not an easy run)
7-4 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking laps on the driveway
7-5 2.3 miles running, 1.0 mile walking (also played doubles tennis for almost 2 hours, outdoors)
7-6 0.0 miles running, 1.0 mile walking
MT = 13.4/70 miles running: 6.0/31miles walking
I hade my 6 month cardiology follow up today. The talked to the cardiologist, well, his Nurse Practitioner, about my heart pounding so much during tennis yesterday...and that I was breathing harder than I normally would. She said, "Well, you were playing tennis." in a voice that said, you were exercising so of course you are going to be breathing harder. I finally got her to understand that it was not normal for me to be breathing that hard playing tennis, but I wasn't what I would call "short of breath." I wasn't dizzy or weak or anything like that. She said my heart sounded healthy and none of my medications should be causing that reaction, so she was a little bit perplexed about the pounding heart. She did say if it happened again to call them and she would order a heart monitor patch for me to wear to see if I was having some sort of arrhythmia. Otherwise, everything checked out and I don't have to go back for 8 months.
While we were in Johnson City, I ran by the VA to pick up some stuff they had found that belonged to my cousin, then went and visited with him - having him sign the VA form for me to resend so that they will talk to me about his claim. He looked and sounded good. It's the first time I have been allowed into the facility. It's nice. The rooms are a little small for two people, but it is really clean and smell nice - not like a nursing home or the apartments he was in before. I'm glad he is there. I think he is too.
Mom and I stopped at Zaxby's and got a 4 piece chicken finger plate to go for lunch/dinner. It was 1:30 and we were hungry. We made one more stop, then I ate mine when I got home at 2:40.
I was so tired I laid down for a nap. I had intended to get up at 4, but got a phone call and didn't really get to "rest" until then. I wound up napping and not getting up until 6 pm! Since I am working the 6:30 - 3:30 shift at daycare tomorrow, I am really going to try to get to bed early. That being the case, I chose to not run, but take my mile walk in the neighbor's field and call that cross training. It was 86°F with a feel like of 87°F, but the entire route is shady this time of day, so it wasn't too bad.
hahaha @Tramboman "I have no use for creepy crawly bitey stingy things either." I totally agree.
@polskagirl01 It stinks about your 30K race being canceled. The organizers will probably find they will have even less people sign up next year. Glad you are doing other fun things instead. It is beautiful there!
@WhatMeRunning Sounds like your pace isn't suffering from not running as much as planned. I hope your brother is okay.
Sometimes you just have to do what you can do and forget what the plan calls for @RunsOnEspresso . Sounds like you put it all out there, so you did great!
Welcome @Zoomie402 !
Nice pace @sweetdaisy13 . Hope your knees quit hurting.
Sounds like a nice day @Teresa502 ! It takes a long time to fill your bucket with blueberries, even if they are all ripe. Freshly picked ones are so good though.
3 -
@teresa502 nah, my mp is fine. It was an off day. Have done plenty of speed work at that pace and faster including last week.3

July Goal: 100 Miles
7/1: 6.26 miles
7/2: 2.25 miles
7/4: 13.2 miles
7/5: 1.02 miles
7/6: 5.53 miles
28.26/100 miles completed for July
I ran 5.5 miles this morning. It wasn't especially hot, but 72°F with 99% humidity and a dew point of 72° is pretty miserable. The run wasn't too bad though. I didn't see any skunks today, but I saw a fox and a donkey. I had seen the donkey last week a couple of blocks from where I saw the skunk. I was coming down the street and I saw what I thought was a huge dog in someone's front yard. I was trying to figure out what kind of dog was that big when I realized it was a donkey. It was in the front yard of a really ramshackle, abandoned looking house. The next day I didn't see the donkey, but the front door of the house was open and it looked empty inside and I kind of thought to myself, "I wonder if that donkey is in the house". Well this morning I found out that the answer was yes. Because when I passed that house I looked and there was the donkey standing in the doorway looking out at me. I guess you never know what you'll see. Then a couple of blocks away I saw the fox.
I'm not sure why my pictures got out of order. The donkey saw me when I stopped to take his picture and he came out on the porch.

I went for a short run today, then watched my girls do cross country. So proud of them!Jessica, 7. She did 1km
Katie age 5. She did 0.5k8 -
July Goal: 75 miles
7/6: Pound workout. For those that don’t know what this is, it’s basically a lot of core and legs tied into playing with drumsticks.
I also got the dog out for a nice walk this evening. I have 2 outdoor cats that decided to join us. Craziest darn thing! 2 cats walking a mile with us!!!
Total: 1 mile12 -
@kgirlhart I'm cracking up at the donkey having his own home. 🤣3
-
@kgirlhart that would make things very interesting 😂 a donkey with its own house 🤣2
-
@kgirlhart Great run in those conditions. The donkey is hilarious. I guess he has his own house. It looks like he has a halter on. I hope someone is making sure he had water.
@Avidkeo Your girls did great! Looks like they are going all out. Hope they enjoyed it.
@Zoomie402 Cats can be funny animals. My mom and dad had a cat that would follow them on their walks. They never went a mile, but we thought it was funny. Great job on your workout.2 -
7 miles this morning. Another soupy one...75F, 74F dew point, 0 wind. When I started, I was determined to take it considerably slower than normal due to the weather, plus I need to make easy days considerably slower than normal. But after mile 3 my brain just wouldn't let me do it, so I added a couple fartleks during each mile, and made myself go slow in between. Those last 4 miles averaged out to being my easy pace goal for the end of summer, so hopefully with nicer weather it will be achievable.

Going to try and reply a little to the others here! Love seeing the pictures!
@martaindale Scorpions are horrifying! I'm also on team "no gross bugs thank you," and anytime I'm tempted to complain about our cold winters I remind myself that the cold temperatures are the only thing holding the truly disgusting critters back. I second the question about if there's a way to keep them out of your house!
@polskagirl01 So sorry to hear about your race! I would be so irritated if it were me. I'm a big planner and having things cancelled at the last minute really bothers me. Sometimes it's inevitable, but if it looks like just flakiness it really gets to me.
@Zoomie402 Welcome! Love that the kitties kept you company!
@quilteryoyo I'm glad the NP was willing to listen even if she was a little dismissive at first. This is random but how is Zaxby's? My husband and I have passed a few when we've travelled for vacation and we've always wondered if it's any good - sampling other regional fast food can be a fun and relatively inexpensive hobby.
@kgirlhart That donkey is cracking me up. Can we say it has an expression on its face? It sure seems to have one.
@Avidkeo so cool to see your girls running too! My two oldest children (10 and 8) are actually starting cross country next week. We used to homeschool but they will be going to school in the fall and organized athletics was one of the things they were most excited about trying, so I hope they like it!
Now here's me:
Distance Log:
July 2: 4.58 miles
July 5: 4.51
July 7: 4.61
Goal: 13.7/40 miles
Very humid and warm but doable. My pace was a little sluggish but I'm experimenting with some elevation changes too rather than trying to keep to as flat a route as possible (which is relative, where I am it's very hilly so unless I run at a track it isn't flat.) When I got home I decided to chill out for a little bit with the change to the cooler air inside and drink some water before taking a shower, and I felt much better than under similar conditions last week.
I'm also trying to spend more time outdoors before the worst heat of the day arrives, and I think that helps.7 -
7-1 4k tempo
7-2 7k tempo
7-3 7k measy (between moderate and easy)
7-4 7k measy
7-5 rest
7-6 7k measy
7-7 6k measy (but a lot closer to easy than moderate)
July Total: 38k
July Goal: 150k
Hazy sunshine; low 70s F; humid, with little wind. Seemed hotter than yesterday. Saw Queen Anne's Lace in bloom; saw cornflowers in bloom last week. When I was young, those two flowers heralded the end of summer. Now, they are blooming in mid summer.
@kgirlhart Looks like the donkey needs the Property Brothers to stop by and do some renovations.
@Avidkeo Girls are darling!!!

Hahaha! Yeah, danger keeps you on your toes!! The gnats are super annoying though. I've had one stuck to my eye after I got home too - so gross!
@polskagirl01 Sorry they cancelled your race. That sucks!2 -
@kgirlhart That donkey is hilarious!
@Teresa502 @quilteryoyo Pest control can only take you so far. Just like any other pest, there will be some that get through. The house has been treated. I did read that scorpions don't like lavender, so I will be planting some outside every door!!5 -
July total: 8.7 miles
7/3: 3 miles
7/5: 2.7 miles
7/7: 3 miles
Another hot and humid run. Got out early enough to take advantage of some cloud cover.6 -
@penguinmama87 I'm with you on the team no yuck bugs and winter. I absolutely hate winter, but after being greeting by a massive spider on my front porch this morning, I'm ready for them to all just go away! What area do you live in to get the hilly conditions? I'm in Nebraska and we get a good mix of both, and it gets really oppressive here with heat in July and August. Yuck.
I work 12 hours today, and have a 2 hour writing assignment due by 11:59pm. I'm hoping to get a few miles in during breaks. Frustrating that I can't do it all at once today. It was thunderstormy this morning, so I couldn't get out before work. But, I'll take what I can get, even if that means a mile here and there. I need to also remember that I am getting my foot back into shape, so taking those smaller spurts is probably for the best anyway. I really miss being able to just bang out 6 miles easy peasy I'll get there again though.8 -
Welcome @Zoomie402 hope you get some time in to run, and more importantly rest!
@sweetdaisy13 seems like the right idea to take a break from those isometrics for a bit. I often struggle trying to get the right balance of strength training for my running and have to adjust.
Good to hear that the cardio thinks you're OK @quilteryoyo hope that experience during tennis was just a fluke.
@kgirlhart I've heard of donkey squats, but a donkey squatter??? Now I've seen and heard just about everything imaginable!
Congrats on the girls doing cross country @Avidkeo that is awesome!
@Scott6255 is it possible your easy pace is already there?
As for scorpions, I've never had to deal with them before. Thankfully. I suspect I wouldn't like them.
For everyone who asked, my brother is doing well. He took too much medication on accident, developed a fast heart rate from it, had a panic attack and admitted himself. He was fine and required no treatments other than a saline drip to help dilute/flush his system. I didn't think of it at the time until just typing that out how we both went in just a few days apart over fears over our heart rate. Go figure! Weird universe remains weird.
