Whoa! That's some serious drive! I'd like to blame the small drives here to city living, but those in villages aren't bigger really.

Still waiting for my Garmin to be replaced so I had to use Strava app on this morning’s run. Strava only gave me 4.78 miles. I run this route all the time and I know that it usually measures between 5.11 and 5.15 miles plus I head my friend’s watch beep when we hit 5 miles so I’m counting it as 5.10 – take that Strava!
@quilteryoyo – I love planting gardens. Mom was just talking over the weekend how much the price of seed potatoes had increased. Did you notice a big difference in what you purchased? Sorry about the mix up with the car titles.
@katharmonic – love your pictures from your Portland adventures! I’ve only been to Portland once for a conference. It was shortly after I began running and I wasn’t nearly as adventurous as I am now. I remember trying to run from my hotel one day and at every intersection I would have to stop and wait for traffic before I could cross the street. I did take an extra day and took a tourist bus out to Multnomah Falls, the vista House, Booneville Dam fish ladder, and a few other spots. It was a nice tour.

@katharmonic Love the pictures from your Portland hike/run. Sounds like a really great day and worth taking the wrong trail. I'm really going to have to do better about running when I travel, if I ever do again.
@yirara Sorry you had to go into the office. I heard on the news today that those who were working from home and now going into the office are spending on average $33 more a day, just to go to work. That seems steep to me - esp. where I live, but can see that if you have a long commute, buy coffee, and eat out. Crazy and doesn't really seem worth it.
@Teresa502 Yes! All of the seeds/plants are so much more expensive than in the past! She quit growing potatoes a few years ago because she said it's cheaper to just buy them from the store. We used to plant a lot and had bushels and bushels when I was growing up. She still does sweet potatoes.1 -
It looks like the Run the World 2022 challenge won't even let me manually enter anything older than two months ago. We're right on pace now though. I had a bunch of double entries because I first tried syncing with Garmin, then Strava. The challenge site caught the double entries but I went in and deleted the extras anyway.
@quilteryoyo I love your consistency. I aspire to be that consistent. And your driveway is beautiful. I can see why you run laps on it. How frustrating about the vehicle mixup!
Hey @katharmonic , good to see you too! Your beautiful photos really make me miss running in Oregon. Three years ago I attempted the Tillamook Burn 50M and only made it 34M but it was 34 of the most beautiful miles I've run. I never did get to run in town though.

@quilteryoyo My parents always had a garden and I have gotten spoiled to homegrown produce. Their sweet potatoes are the BEST! So much better than store bought. I will miss that so much when they go full-time RVing.3 -

Per day?!? Wow! Nah, people tend to have smaller cars here that don't use a lot of petrol, my ride is 30 minutes. And people don't buy food or coffee or those kind of things at work here. Most people just bring their lunch, really. For me, it's mostly getting up earlier and coming home later compared to working from home. Negotiated 1-2 office days per week with my manager. Once covid numbers go down again anyway.4 -
Thanks @7lenny7 . I am just now getting back to being consistent. While you were AWOL I had back issues that kept me from running much, and then my heart started acting weird. Turned out I have scoliosis, which I never knew before but have probably had most of my life, and the heart was having a lot of premature ventricle and aortic contractions. I started taking magnesium oxide for my heart and it has really made a huge difference. I started a 10K plan that I am determined to follow to the best of my ability. This is week three and I am doing great so far. I am also still streaking with at least one mile walk a day. Keeps me from being a couch potato on days I'm in a mood or lazy. The driveway is a godsend when it is hot out in the summer. Even though it is mostly hills, it is at least shady. Thanks for joining Run The World. You have us back on track.
@martaindale Home grown sweet potatoes are a lot better than "store bought." So are tomatoes! I hate it when I have to buy a tomato from the grocery store. The only ones that taste decent are the vine ripened ones that are still on a piece of the vine.
@yirara I thought that sounded really steep too. I'm sure it was for those places with higher cost of living and they were probably throwing in new work clothes, etc that not everyone would get.1 -

I ran on the treadmill after work today. The plan called for a 25 minute foundation run, so goal was to keep my HR under 143 bpm for the entire run. It went up to 144 for one second. I'll call that a win. Today, I ran 4/1 minutes at xxx/4.2 mph....the xxx was a ladder from 4.5 - 4.7 - 4.5 mph. No walking today. It turned out to be fairly easy. It's harder for me to do that on the hills outside.3 -

@teresa502 yes, the blocks in Portland are shorter than regular blocks and you end up stopping and starting all the time! The waterfront trail along the river was a relief from that. I wanted to get to Multnomah Falls but didn't arrange a tour ahead and renting a car seemed to expensive and more hassle than I wanted. It looks beautiful and I wish I had thought ahead to get there and do a little hiking. And I would love to get to Mt. Hood too. So much to explore.
In good news, my luggage was delivered to me this morning. I was so relieved, and mostly because I had some of my good running stuff in there.
I wasn't able to get a run in today. Hopefully tomorrow.5 -
9.5 miles tonight. One of those immensely satisfying runs you don't get often enough. Felt great, great pace for where I am in my fitness and I ran up all the hills.
This puts me at 89 of 90 miles towards my goal.7 -

I ran 6 miles this morning. was really nice running weather. It was kind of chilly at 44°F, but it wasn't windy and it wasn't rainy. I wore shorts and a t-shirt, but started out with sleeves and gloves. I took them off about halfway through, but ended up putting the gloves back on. It was a lovely morning. The sky was clear and the moon was just a crescent. It was dark when I started and it was getting light as I finished. I saw a hummingbird at my sage bush when I got home. I'm at 90/100 miles, so I should be able to make my goal. Hopefully the next couple of days will be nice weather.

@7lenny7 - I went back an looked at the rules on Challengehound and I have it set to synch back but it does say the limit is 60 days ☹️ Regardless your contribution has helped us into the positive!! YAY!
@katharmonic - so glad you had a good trip to Portland and the weather cooperated! The pictures are beautiful! I'm always amazed by those mountains when we are up that way. They really are magnificent!
@quilteryoyo - I refuse to eat tomatoes that are not 'home' grown. I was spoiled growing up and tomatoes in general don't taste right.
I did a walk/run today to work through some stress about the ortho appointment today. The result of that is I will be doing PT 2x/wk for 4 weeks and hopefully during that time the bone break will heal and the pain and range of motion will improve. If not then I will be scheduled for a surgical fix. In the meantime I can continue to walk/run as long as it doesn't hurt. He did comment that the injury was very unusual. I figure I just did it right 😁5 -

@shanaber I'm glad that you are getting to work to get your injury better and that you were cleared to walk and run. If you have to injure yourself, it might as well be something unique/unusual. I hope the PT works and you don't have to have surgery.

I never think to look at my total mileage per month, I kind of like it! So far for April I'm at 59.45. I've an hour easy run today, long run pace, so it should be nice and easy. We're back down to the 30's today though... kind of a bummer! Ready to ditch the ear warmers and gloves already!!5

Progression run after work yesterday was a bit of a fail. The first 3 miles were all basically the same and the 2nd mile was actually a few secs slower than the first, so progressing the wrong way. I felt like I was making adjustments in pace but I guess not. I focused on turning it up during mile 4 and dropped the pace by 45 secs or so but because I was starting from such a slow point it was still not as fast as I was targeting. I know this is at least partially due to the rising temps as it was mid 70's yesterday during my run and the weather heavily affects my pace. And probably also not helped by running in the afternoon. I definitely get into habits and my habit is morning running. When I go out in the afternoon it takes a lot more effort to do the same workout I would do in the morning.
Oh well. Even though I didn't get what I should have out of the workout, miles are better than no miles. I have another speed workout today after work. Intervals. IDK how this will go but we'll give it a shot.5 -

It was another beautiful morning for a run. I ran 5 easy miles. It was 54°F with a light breeze. Perfect in shorts and a t-shirt. I love these mornings when it is dark at the start but light at the finish.

It's 11 months away but I found my next destination race, the Bootlegger 50M (or 100M) race in Jackson, GA. The race itself isn't really worthy of a destination race, but it happens to be 5 minutes from my brother's house, and it also happens to be during the best time of year for bass fishing, which my brother loves to do. He said he started hiking on those trails last year and thinks it's a pretty nice trail.
Whether I do the 50M or 100M will depend on my fitness at the time of registration, but it will probably be the 50M. It's a 10M loop course, so hopefully it's a scenic 10 miles so I don't get bored with it.
I'm already in planning mode. I'll make a week and a half road trip of it, stopping in every state I drive through for a short trail run, then 2 or 3 days of fishing with my brother, the race, a day or two of recovery, then the drive home, again running in every state I go through. If I make a loop of my driving route I can run through 11 states, including 6 I've never run in before.10 -
@7lenny7 I love your plan for this trip! Sounds like the race was a nice coincidence and the trip makes for an interesting way to see a lot of different areas.2

Finally getting somewhere. I'm still breathing far too fast, e.g. I'm not getting enough air but I finally reached the moment again, after roughly 3km where running becomes easier all of a sudden. Love those 3km moments even though I have no idea what they are. Had aimed for 6km today, but the 3km mark also coincided with a blister former underneath my foot, opposite the arch, so I had to stop. Took shoes off and walked home barefoot as it was less painful.2 -
@martaindale I'm curious, how was your HR. Did it show you were working harder even if the pace wasn't what you wanted it to be? Some days are just harder. You did great to get the mileage in regardless of whether you met the training goal or not. Hope the intervals go well.

I played tennis on the outdoor clay courts this morning. The weather was great for it, once it warmed up a little. It was probably around 50 or so. It was 34 when I woke up. When I got home, I went out for a 2 mile walk on the driveway. It was actually a wun, since I threw in just enough running to keep my HR above 120 bpm.4 -
I had a good 6 mile run tonight, including a stop at a mail box to send out some mail. With that I've exceeded my monthly goal! Now to shower and finish replacing our garbage disposer.
@yirara I've been anywhere from completely out of shape to fit enough to run a 50 mile race and one of the universal truths regardless of my level of fitness is that the first miles or two is always awful. Once I get past that point, it always gets better. I have no idea why that is but my theory is that my body is fighting the entire idea of running and after a mile or two it finally gives in and decides to work with me rather than against me. So your initial 3km of a run being tough...it's that way for a LOT of people. As far as breathing goes, one thing which really helped me was to consciously breath deeply and deliberately when I ran. I try to inhale deeply for four strides (2 for each foot) then a long exhale for four strides. If you're not able to do this right away, slow down, even if it means walking until it comes natural. This will do a couple of things. First, it will help keep your breathing from getting away from you. Second, it will help increase you lung capacity, which will help your running pace and fitness.

@quilteryoyo I won't make it through Virginia but will go through Tennessee. Which one are you in?
Here's the general route I was thinking of taking but my route could easily change. My brother-in-law and his wife are in Manchester, TN so that's a definite stop for me. Heck, I might have to make this a 2 week trip and really let myself wander.
