4/14- 2.9 miles. I met the goal I set for this month on Wednesday. I will see where I end up on 4/30, so that I can better gauge my goal for May.5

Oh my! Scott that sounds awful.... And the funny thing is that I had JUST decided that I had an intercostal sprain yesterday evening (go back a few pages to my rant about my back). Is the universe aligning in this manner? I have been running but not fast at all. Scott your injury sounds a lot worse than mine - I hope you can heal quickly but from my waterskiing days I think it takes 6-8 weeks or more to heal. sigh.
What has eased my pain has been Rx level Naproxin. Which I rarely take but it helped me to sleep and move more normally. The other odd thing about this injury is that BOTH ice and heat seem to help. So I have been alternating a cold and a heating pad. I really wish I had a talented massuese who knew me because I think it could help also but I am afraid to just go willy nilly to anyone and end up worse.
Mileage wise I am up to 73.68 out of my 125 mile goal...I probably should not run and let my back heal up completely but I will if I can.4 -

@SummerSkier I think we should form a support group for intercostal muscle strain 😉 So sorry you are going through this too. Generic Aleve, ice and heat are what I have been doing. It does seem to help. 6-8 weeks is going to feel like forever!
But I did get 8 miles in this morning. First early morning run this year. I was kinda dreading it, but after I got up it felt like I had been doing this routine for ever. The run felt good, and back just kept letting me know it was still there, but no real pain. Twisting is was makes it hurt, so just moving forward wasn't bad. Kept telling myself to slow down, but needed to go even slower than I did. I'll keep working on that.
Now I have to climb in a car and drive 5 hours to Houston. 😒 for Easter weekend. Have a good weekend everybody!

@shanaber Looks like a fantastic day was had by all. I'm sure Hobbes is glad to be by himself for a bit, but am also sure he misses Beaux - or will after he gets rested up. Glad your winds have calmed down. As for the weather, we are supposed to get rain tonight and Sunday night, but nothing major is forecast for E. TN. As I recall, it rarely snows in Seattle, so they are probably having a tough time.
Nice for already meeting your goal for the month @f7d49cxrdc . Sometimes it is hard to gage how much you will be able to run, especially when you are first starting out - or starting again. You're doing great.
Take it easy @SummerSkier . I had forgotten that you hurt your back too.

First run on the hills in almost 2 months. It was definitely hard after not running hills for so long. Luckily the scenery is a nice distraction! I am going hiking with my family tomorrow and have 2 other runs scheduled while I am here so getting plenty of time in on the hills.6 -

Sadly, I did it 1/16/2022. I was working on yoga pose and slight shift and felt my rib pop. Thought I had broken it with some violent yoga. Ice and heat are your friends. I laid on the floor for awhile, unable to move it was so painful, so I fully understand.

I switched today's and yesterday's planned runs just because yesterday was so nice out, I felt good, and the run was going well. There was only a 5 minutes difference, but I didn't know what the weather would be like today, or how I would feel. So, you go with it when you can. My goal was to keep my HR under 143. Yesterday, I was over for about 40 seconds, so I called that a win. My overall average pace was 12:48 min/mile (4.7) mph. So I was pleased.
Today, I ran on the treadmill after cleaning house and doing some things for mom. I wasn't in the mood, so getting dressed and on the treadmill was a win. Anyway, I decided on a run/walk at 4/1 minutes. I did the walks at 3.8 mph and the runs were a ladder from 4.4 - 4.6 - 4.4 mph - the last bit I ran 7:29 minutes. So, a total of 2.0 miles in 27:29 minutes for a 13:45 min/mile (4.3 mph) pace. My max HR was 139. So, another successful run in my book.
Week one of the plan down and I think I nailed it. Did cross training once when time was an issue. So five runs. That's good for me. Now to keep the momentum going next week. Tomorrow is a rest day, so will probably just walk a mile.5 -
I hope everyone is having a good weekend. @Scott6255 hope the rib pain is ok, especially after a long car trip. That's so painful.

It was another crazy week and things did not go as planned running-wise. It's mostly been work-related but I did go to a Bonnie Raitt concert on Wednesday, which was amazing. She's incredible - 72 years old! Today I woke up and verified that the cold rain that was in the forecast was indeed happening and I went back to bed. My tolerance for cold and miserable is very low at this point. I had to go into work for a while so decided to just go to the gym after and run on the treadmill. Not a long run, but got something done at least. Tomorrow that four-letter word that that is not rain is in the forecast again. This is getting beyond old.7 -

Our weather has been nuts, storms off and on all week. It seems like when it’s forecast to be stormy, it’s fine, and when it’s forecast to be fine, it storms. Last run of last week was supposed to storm, so I made other plans, then no storm, so I finally said okay, let’s do this thing, and ended up running home through lightning. Then a lifting day and a rest day. Then Saturday was forecast for storms all day. Again nothing. It’s now too late to go to a park, but I decide to get out and do a little something in the neighborhood. Nice 5k run, very slow because our broken sidewalks are more like trail running than roads. Glancing at the radar and prediction map the whole way. Decide okay, I have time for a cool down walk before the rain gets here. A quarter mile from home, suddenly, not on the map, HAIL! right in the face!
So that is the story of how my husband and I ran the last leg of our cool down walk at 7:30 pace which is faster than I have run in about two years now. It’s amazing what a motivator getting slapped in the face by stinging balls of ice can be!9 -

Long run on the hills. It was hard. The end.
No, really, it was hard but I explored a new road and saw a cool old family cemetery and pretty scenery. Our property sits on the site of an old ranch. There are some historic landmarks preserved within the neighborhood that I happen upon occasionally. Today was the family cemetery.
Also, we want hiking and swimming yesterday at Guadalupe River State Park. Really pretty hike and the river is cool and clear. My kid loves skipping rocks, so we spent a fair amount of time doing that.6 -
@katharmonic and @rheddmobile - With every storm we get (for that goes north of us) I think of you all because it is pretty likely it will move on across the country and likely go your way. My dd called me earlier this last week to tell me it was snowing in Seattle. Then our friends in ND sent pictures of the multiple feet of snow that they got and their plans for a snow Easter egg hunt (plastic eggs with golf balls inside town out into the snow so there are no tracks. Kids find and trade in the found eggs for treats and prizes). I thought it was a pretty novel idea. It does make me feel a little guilty that we are having pretty much perfect weather now - mid 60's, mostly sunny with a lovely breeze. I have invited them to come and visit any time 😁
@martaindale - the pictures look so awesome! Such a great place too run and explore! The cemetery looks fascinating.
Rest day for me today. If I run my normal days. consistently the rest of the. month I will be on track to blast past my goal and hit the 100 mile club.
ETA - We are closing in on Shanghai in Run the World... it will have to be a quick pass by though because of the lockdown there. Hopefully we can just wave to @noblsheep and hope they are able to get a run in now and then despite the situation there.

I spent the long weekend hiking instead of running. It’s looking doubtful that I will make my running goal this month but there is always next month! Hiking report in the spoiler if you would like to read it.

Ouch @Scott6255. I’m amazed that you have been able to run. I hope it’s completely healed soon – your injury also @SummerSkier.

@martaindale – what are those raised rocks/shells on the graves? I’ve never seen marked grave like that before.Two friends and I left after work on Thursday and drove to Salem, Virginia – about 2 hours from my house. On Friday morning, we drove to a parking area adjacent to the Appalachian Trail and a shuttle driver picked us up and took us to a different parking area where we begin hiking north towards our car. The first 5.5 miles was all up hill and pretty rocky. At the peak of the mountains, we went a tenth of a mile off trail to see the Dragon’s Tooth (part of the “Triple Crown”). The views were beautiful but I did not climb to the top of the tooth – too scary for me! The really hard part of the hike began when we left the Dragon’s Tooth. We had about 7/10ths of a mile climbing down some vertical rocks. Since this was a famous landmark this section of the trail was pretty busy until we got about a mile down the AT where another trail split off that took everyone just visiting the Dragon’s Tooth to a parking lot. After that I think we saw three other hikers. The trail was up and down all the rest of the way to the car. We hiked 14.06 miles and had 3,733 of elevation gain. After grabbing dinner we headed back to the hotel to re-group for the next day.
On Saturday, we drove to the parking area where we began Friday’s hike and had the shuttle drive pick us up there and take us to another area. We hiked north again but this time the terrain was much better. The first 3.5 miles was uphill but after that it was along a ridge line and then mostly down hill back to the car. We hiked 8 miles with 1,987 feet of elevation gain for the day. We finished up the hike around 12:30, stopped at a local bakery and coffee shop in downtown Salem, and then drove home.

When I looked at @martaindale's cemetery picture I was completely focused on the grave marker and didn't even notice the shells on the graves. I have not seen that before either.
I found this article that has some ideas about why they were used and are apparently pretty prevalent in cemeteries in the south.

@shanaber enjoy your perfect weather. It is interesting how these storms make their way across the country. I'll pass on ND weather with feet of snow though! We did have snow today but it was just flurries and nothing accumulated. Still, it was so cold and windy. I opened the door to let Stella out this morning and she got a gust of wind and snow in the face and promptly said no thanks and went back in. She's over it too.
@rheddmobile - hail in the face, that's way worse! And no way to have a cool down run. That's quite a pace, how did you feel?
@martaindale very lovely places to explore! I haven't seen that type of grave marking with shells either. I love to wander in old cemeteries for the history and the beauty of the old markers.
@Teresa502 that hike looks fantastic! I can't tell how big that Dragon's Tooth is from your pic but I would want to get up there. Looks kind of sharp though. Amazing views.

As I mentioned above, it was COLD, and SNOWING this morning and I was not willing to go out there. I lazed around for much of the morning and then went to the gym, which was open until noon. I got there about 11 and there were quite a lot of people there. I was surprised but I guess everyone was getting their pre-Easter dinner workout in. I ran on the treadmill while watching an episode of the Netflix show Space Force. I don't normally watch shows while running and it's kind of hard for me to watch on my phone, but it was novel enough to keep me fairly entertained today.
This week looks like a challenge. I'm leaving for Portland for a conference very early on Wednesday and get back late sunday night. So very short week at work to get a ton of stuff done and little time for running, and then of course travel challenges. I'm looking forward to a change of scenery for a bit though!4 -

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was cloudy and kind of chilly. I would have liked to get out early for a sunrise Easter Run, but I just couldn't get going this morning. And it was cloudy anyway so you couldn't really see the sunrise. I did see the first bluebonnets of the year so that made me happy.
And I saw a beautiful blue heron soaring over the creek as I crossed the bridge. All in all it was a nice morning for a run and not as windy as it has been lately. I hope all who celebrated Easter have had a good one.

@martaindale Very cool cemetery. There are several graves in the cemetery here that are covered with shells.

Today I ran 5.4 Birthday Miles. The weather was perfect for running. The sky was clear and the moon was big and bright. It was 50°F with just a light wind. I was kind of tired from my 10 miles yesterday so I took it pretty easy and slow today and had a great run. I usually take Mondays as rest days, so I am planning to rest tomorrow instead. I just wanted to continue my tradition of "running my age" on my birthday.

hahaha... Bluebonnets in Tx. Bluebells in the East. Having lived in both locations this is a clear distinction to me and I struggle not to correct people on it. Sometimes I fail. Happy Bday Kgirl!!!
I took a rest day yesterday and it honestly did not seem to do much to help my injury. Laced on my most padded shoes and ran a slow run this morning because it was a gorgeous morning to run. I fear recovery will be the 6-8 weeks predicted. Scott, impressed you did 6.....

Late getting to the gym today so had only time for a very short run before strength training. When I left the gym it was starting to rain and that is turning into, you guessed it, snow. 2 to 6 inches expected overnight with some places getting 6-10. I swear, if we get over a couple of inches I'm moving. Or maybe I just won't come back from Portland.3 -

@Aine8046 - I hope your knee is better soon! Did you do something specific to injure it or is it a result of running? My knee hurts and talks to me when my shoes are getting too worn out but typically some ice takes care of it (and new shoes 😊)

@katharmonic - I hope the weather cooperates in Portland. They have been having some pretty cold weather too and even had snow last week. Hopefully it will just be rain and it will be warmer. Are you planning to run while you are there? If you can get down by the river there are some great paths to run right along it. I found places to run there when we were there last at this site
Thought I would include a shout out to congratulate our old friend @garygse. He had a fantastic race today in Boston and was within seconds of a PR.
I couldn't get to sleep last night and when I did I was uncomfortable and didn't sleep well. I needed to get Hobbes the Vizsla out for a bit so we headed out and I was just too tired to run so we walked instead. We are getting some small storms the next few days that will keep the temps cool but there won't be much if any rain. Hoping to get out and actually run on Wednesday. Tuesday is a rest day after agility class tonight. Hobbes and I need a day to recover.

Finally back on the map with some running miles. Looks like winter is back here in NE Tennessee. When I left my house at 4:15 this morning, it was 34F snowing and the ground was getting white. During my run it was only a light drizzle but still cold.

I saw @garygse completion of the Boston Marathon on Strava. He did awesome! Average 7:15 pace for 26.2 miles!!

I haven't had a lot of time to be on the computer the last couple of days....well, that's not totally true. I could have, but chose to spend the time on the couch, watching TV and relaxing on Sunday. I worked yesterday all day, came home and did my scheduled run. By then, it was late, so I opted to not open the computer since I am really trying to get to bed earlier. I'm not working today, so caught up on the thread. I'll post about my runs later today, after I get today's done.
@katharmonic Cold rainy days are not conducive to outdoor running in my opinion either. Great job on getting in a run on the treadmill.
@rheddmobile Yikes for the hail in the face. Not getting hurt is a great motivator for running fast. Amazing pace for that cool down.

Love your hiking report @Teresa502 . I wouldn't have climbed to the top of Dragon's Tooth either. Do people actually do that? Those steep, rocky ascents/descents look really hard. I love all the different shades of green that you get to see in the Spring. Nice run this morning. I don't know what it was doing here at 4:15 - except maybe some snoring. When I got up at 8 the sun was shining, but it is cold.
@katharmonic I hope your weather gets better and you enjoy your change of scenery for a bit. I hope you didn't get much snow. It's hard when it comes so late in the year and you just want Spring to be sprung.
