WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the September 2022 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10872687/september-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until October 1, 2022 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Bookmark the previous and past challenges: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comand create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Figured I would give @tarun_yadavA an opportunity to set this up since he has become adept now with MFP 'spoilers' 😂 But since he did not and it is October 1st in some parts of the world already, I figured I would go ahead and get it done...
I'm going for the 100 mile club again!10 -

@shanaber so so mean 🤣😂4 -
October target - I'm going to go for 120M again.
I figure I only have 20-22 runs in me this month.
(Going away on holiday to South Africa at the end of the month for 2 weeks... Don't think some of the places I'm going lend themselves well to outdoor runs [and gives me a chance to rest my glute-hammy!])8 -
Thanks for setting us up @shanaber
Quick calculation gives me a conservative 120km for this month due to taper, race, and then recovery, but my main goal is to finish my race on the 23rd in one piece. Excitified mode has definitely kicked in now!8 -
Thanks @shanaber!
My marathon plan only adds up to 107 miles this month. That seems very low, but also I have out-of-town plans for at least 2 of those weekends, so that might end up being close to accurate. But I should be doing some pretty long runs in October, so I might have to do those during the week. Oh well, I'll figure it out. I am going to plan on at least 120 miles.7 -
400 miles for October, with 31 days, I have a chance to push closer to 500
Race Half marathon coming up 10/22/22

@Scott6255 holidays/weekends away/family commitments were what initially made me start doing my long runs on Fridays this summer. Then I realised that it's actually awesome because I only need to get up around half an hour earlier than we do on weekdays anyway, and then I don't have to get up early to run at the weekend. I am lucky though as being self-employed I can start late and work late and nobody cares as long as I deliver on time.
I hadn't realised how much I missed running in the morning until I stopped going to club runs.7 -

Finishing this month with lovely calm and kind of warm weather. Run was a bit boring as I was meant to stay below my lactate threshold, but my HR went high quickly. Probably still thanks to covid. So I walked a lot. But what I ran was fun. On to the next month6 -
No mileage goal this month. My goal is to pace myself and get to where every effort doesn't set me back again. And I'll try to not complain!9
-
My only goal for the month is to finish Sunday’s marathon. I would also like to do a 10K race at the end of the month.11
-
Don't know if you have missed me or not, but I have missed you. I'm okay. Just been really, really busy and tired and life happened so didn't have time to read or post here I'm hoping Oct will be better. Thought I'd go ahead and bookmark this page. Will be back tomorrow to comment more. Thanks for setting it up @shanaber .7
-
@quilteryoyo - you have definitely been missed. I knew what you were up to and how busy you have been but others have been asking about you!2

@marisap2010 good luck for your Marathon today! 😊3 -
Morning everyone!
Got in a 9K
London Marathon tomorrow... I live between Miles 10 and 11
All eyes on Kipchoge to see if he can crack the 2hr mark (got an insane 2:01" in Berlin)7 -
Oh crap. I just realised I forgot to Spoiler. D'OHHH. 😂

@tarun_yadavA We'll forgive you 😂
Very cool though, it is probably because I was born not that far away, but London marathon always seems extra exciting to me (from afar). I just saw a Runners World article on places that will be giving people free food afterwards if they show their medals. Super cool! Hahahaha.
Doubt I'd ever run it though. The only road marathon that appeals to me is Rome, which is on the bucket list for before my 50th birthday. Currently obsessed with Brighton trail marathon, pencilled that one in for 2024 as it clashes with my daughter's universith entrance exams next year.
In other news... I don't think my knees are broken, taking it easy today but only seem to have the post-long run aches. My shoulders are really sore though, all that extra weight in water I guess. Thank goodness races have aid stations 😁7 -
Getting ready for next month. Not sure I'll be able to run on Sunday as I'm on a 2 days train trip and I'm sure my train back will be delayed, and hence me arriving home late in the evening. Lets see
02.10 Sun xx°C xx.km xxmin
total: /80.5km

Oh very cool about living on the marathon route Tarun.. Quilter you were definitely missed.
Thanks for starting things up Shanaber. I am in for 120 again this month. (working on 1500 for the year). Currently at about 1140 so 360 to go works out perfectly.3 -

Hiya, I figured from the Spain location you might be from here originally!
Yeah - Marathon day is a special day. Once all the serious elite runners have gone, it's a bit of a laugh with all the silly costumes. Kids love seeing a guy running as a giant hotdog or a rhino suit (raising money for 'Save the rhino') In our neighbourhood, a lot of people just there on the sides with trays of gummy sweets for runners running by.
Best of London.
Oooohhh... Brighton Marathon? That's a lot harder than London. Uphill downhill, pebbley bits, and hard sea breeze.6 -

@SummerSkier thank you! 😊
You'll nail the 1500! 😊2 -
@tarun_yadavA Brighton trail... started this year, ventures into the South Downs. Longer term goal is the South Downs Way ultra! I was born in Crawley, my dad still lives there, so yeah, much as I dislike the UK in general, the countryside in the south has a special pull for me.1

I'm not training for anything right now. The Half Marathon that I have been running has been discontinued. I am hoping to schedule something this fall, but for now I will just say 100 miles for October. Today is a rest day for me so I will have to wait until tomorrow to post mileage. It us a lovely morning and I am hoping for it to be just as nice tomorrow.3

Have any of you ever given an old garmin to a family member? My husband's fitbit died and I thought I might let him use my old garmin FR35. Does it need to be reset or just change the user settings and connect to his phone?0
-
@marisap2010 best of luck on your marathon! You are ready! Have fun 😊
18 miles this morning. Ideal weather; started at 57F, 3mph wind, 47F dewpoint. Tried to keep HR under 120, and speed just under 10 min/mi. First half did ok, so decided to run blind for the 2nd half (never looked at my watch). Just went by feel. That went pretty good, pace was faster than the 1st half. Didn't feel like I was dying at the end. Could have gone 20, but probably not 26.2 😏

@shanaber Thanks for setting us up!
Good luck to @marisap2010 today! I have heard nothing but good things about wineglass.
@quilteryoyo You have definitely been missed. We look forward to hearing from you later this month.
@tarun_yadavA It’s cool that you live on the route. After Kipchoge’s amazing Berlin performance, I am excited to see what he does in London. The man is just amazing.
@scott6255 You did great on your 18 miler! Having a good long run is such a big confidence boost!5 -
Alright y’all, things are getting real this month with this training plan. My plan adds up to 178.5 miles for October, so I’m setting a goal of 180 miles since it’s a nice round number. That’s about 45 miles a week, which is about what the peak weeks were for my HM plan, so I know I can handle the volume but I have never maintained that volume for this long.
October total: 10/180 miles
10/1: 10 miles
On the board this month with my long run. It was an absolutely gorgeous morning. Low 50’s and upper 60’s by the time I was done. And the humidity wasn’t as high as normal either. Just amazing. I went to a greenway trail that is asphalt paved and runs through the woods along a river near my house, super shady, and no roads to cross. It’s a great spot for a long run. There are even a few parks along the trail so you have bathrooms! It totals something like 16 or 18 miles one direction. A lot of the bikers do laps on it for safe, car free bike rides.
Anyway, even though I was slow getting out the door this morning, it was amazingly gorgeous. Took some left over skratch chews and tried a new flavor of gu, mint chocolate. Wow, it’s good! Imagine frosting made from Andes mints. Definitely have to get some more of that one. This was one of those runs that just felt good the whole time. My pace was stable throughout. I even had plenty in the tank for a fast finish last mile and my HR never got out of control. I went back to see what my last couple of 10 milers looked like and today’s average pace was 38 sec/mi faster than my last one and 56 sec/mi faster than the one before that! I wasn’t really aiming for any particular pace, just wanted to see where I landed with better temps as a benchmark for where my fitness was. I am really pleased with where I am right now. This training plan has a target long run pace and without trying I was only 9 secs off that target. If I had been aware of it and aiming for it, I definitely think I could have maintained that pace today no problem.
Edited for a trail pic8 -
@eleanorhawkins I think being able to sleep in on the weekends is a great reason to do your long runs on Friday. Also nice that you are self employed and can set your own hours. I need to go back and see what happened during your race. Glad you survived and your knees and shoulders aren't too bad today.
@polskagirl01 Complain away. That's what we are here for. You are doing great.
Good luck on your marathon @marisap2010 . Look forward to hearing how you did.
Cool that you live on the London Marathon course @tarun_yadavA . Great job on your runs too.
Can't help you out on the Garmin @kgirlhart . I usually don't get a new one until mine quits working.
Nice run @Scott6255 . That's a speedy pace for such a low HR. I'm in Zone 4 or 5 at that pace. LOL
@martaindale Sounds like you had a really great run today. Congratulations on such a great increase in your pace! Love the picture. Such a pretty trail.
Thanks everyone for your kind words. I do need to go back and at least skim the last couple of weeks from Sept to see what I missed. Hopefully I can do that tomorrow. I was extremely busy in September. I have a second part time job - helping conduct health screenings in all of the local county schools. I did that several days and some of those I went into help at daycare after I left the school. We also had my mom's new gas heater installed, tank set up, gas delivered, and heater set up and turned on. She loves it and it is working great to keep her old farmhouse warm. Seems like there were other things too. Anyway, there just weren't enough hours in the day to get everything done.
I did manage to keep up my mile streak at least and get in some longer runs. The longest was 7 miles. I fell woefully short of my goal for Sept though. I had hoped to reach 90 miles total of running and fast walking, but ended the month at 66.72 miles. I still have 10 weeks before my 10 mile race in FL, so I think, if I can figure out how to get in my long runs, I'll still be okay. We shall see.
Looking at the plan and expecting that I won't run all of those days and things will happen, I am setting my goal for Sept for about 80% of the running I should do if I followed the plan exactly. LOL So, my goal is to run 58 miles and walk 22, for a total of 80 miles.
I started off today with not being able to do the long run that I had hoped because time got away from me. I have had 2 or 3 boxes of clothes that I was planning to get rid of, but mom wanted to see if she could wear/wanted any of them first. She decided about 11 am that today would be a good day for her to come up and try them on. Had I ran first, that wouldn't have been an issue, but I didn't. So, I brought her up here. While she looked through them and tried them on, I vacuumed and did laundry. She decided to keep about a third of them. I'm glad she found so much that she liked and those boxes are out of my house. LOL But, by the time she was done, and I finished the vacuuming, it was already 3:30. I had other things that I needed to get done today, so I just went down and ran 35 minutes on the treadmill.
October: 3.50/80 mile goal
1 Oct - Ran 2.50 miles, Walked 1.00 mile - treadmill8 -
