October 2022 Monthly Running Challenge

@martaindale ok this is probably dumb, but I'm going to share a little mental trick that's helped me with non- technical downhill running. I focus on dropping my centre of gravity lower by bending my knees a little, then think of spokes like on a bicycle wheel so my feet are taking taking short steps but they're flowing in a sort of circular motion. I also think about keeping my feet wide rather than running on a tightrope to avoid the possibility of them tangling, and arms wide to help with balance when necessary. Dunno if that makes any sense, but it got me out of the painful habit of trying to use my quads to brake, which always ended up hurting.7

03.10 Mon 13°C 4.1km 36min
05.10 Wed 17°C 6.2km 55min

total: 20.57/80.5km (2.8km behind)
Looking good. Trying to get one more run in this week and then I should be on track for this month. Thanks to covid HR still rises steeply, but there's no change in the upper HR range, thus if I run slow my HR is higher, but if I run somewhat faster it's where it always is. Energy worked out today. 3x15 intervals, each with higher HR.5 -
I just checked and Run the World 2022 is coming up to my home.
I live in Adams, TNHome of the Bell Witch
Adams is a beautiful, quaint town located north of Nashville along Interstate 24, nestled between Springfield and Clarksville. It is also home to the infamous haunting of the Bell Witch, a legend from Southern folklore about an invisible witch who haunted the area.
I have it mostly decorated (older picture) but same decor I use every year. Grass is green in this one, but this year we are dried and burned up with no rain.
On the way out, we can stop at Shade Tree Orchard for some apple cider. Not a great harvest due to dry conditions, but cider is cold.

Interestingly enough, you all will probably be with me when I make it home tomorrow. I am 15 miles away from home to finish my Run around the earth. Frost likely tonight, so dress warm!

@eleanorhawkins Not dumb at all. Your description makes perfect sense. I should focus on dropping my center of gravity. I'm definitely still standing up tall. It makes sense that bending my knees more might help me feel less like I'm going to wipe out. Thank you for the advice!
Can't wait to run you home tomorrow @AlphaHowls3 -
@martaindale - Fiesty Triathlon (a women's triathlon group that calls themselves the 'home of women's triathlon) had a week of live coverage of the women at Kona. I think you can still listen to the interviews on their podcast or watch on YouTube. Links under the spoiler...
They were really excited about the number of women, pros and amateurs, participating and that the pro women were offered an equal number of slots as the men (a first) and the separate day too.Episodes 1-7 on each platform

@eleanorhawkins - that actually sounds like advice that I got about running down(steep)hill (bent knees, lower center of gravity, shorter steps, slightly wider stance). I don't tend to keep my arms out though.
@AlphaHowls - I am excited to run by your house and see the decorations! Cold cider sounds great. I read today about the drought hitting the center of the country and that even the Mississippi River is too low for the barges and river boats.
We will be running by @quilteryoyo's even though there isn't a specific stop on the map for it because we are limited in the number of stops included. Then we will be running up to @Teresa502 in VA.
I took Hobbes out for a fast warmup walk then came home to drop him off. My big toe was hurting (on and off ingrown nail issue) so I put a toe cap on it but that made it worse. It just hurt too much to run. Going to try soaking it tonight and hopefully it will feel better in the morning.

Good morning everyone!! Hope everyone's having a nice weekend! Nice day for running - so I ran into London today, rather than my usual loop!
If any of you ladies are into English Lit or History/Architecture... Shakespeare's Globe and St Paul's cathedral! ... Or the Green Bag Packers! There are a lot of fans about for the NFL overseas game this weekend!! 😊
(My first ever girlfriend was an American girl from small town Wisco... So I love all things Wisconsin! 😊 )

@shanaber OMG. Ouch. Hope you feel better soon1 -
Oh yeah... My run! D'ohhhh! 🤦

I really needed to hear that today.
A few weeks ago, just as I was preparing to get back into running, I fell off the wall funny during a bouldering session and pulled something. (I was lucky - saw somebody in a forum that had fallen the same way and ended up needing surgery and three months bed rest.) Anyway I was feeling 80% better and itching to get into it, but now I've decided to do the sensible thing and wait until I can do said hopping.
Great job everyone on the running!

waving @AlphaHowls as I run by,..
@eleanorhawthorn hope you did not end up with a cold... sometimes my throat feels sore when I talk to much at work. LOL.
@shanaber Ingrown toenails are tough. I usually try to gently pull then free and slather antibiotic ointment on them but I haven't had a bad one in years. My latest thing to keep them from splitting and such is to gel coat polish them... not so much for the look but for the strength.
fun reading this morning everyone!3 -
Oh yeah, I got the cold. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's actually man-flu. I feel like *kitten* but can't stop eating all the junk food, even though I can't actually taste it. Haven't run since Wednesday, but after days of 'recovery' my watch decided thismorning to tell me I'm overtraining. Taper tamtrums haha.
Just to add extra stress, it looks like I'll be going to my race alone. It's my daughter's birthday on the Friday and she wants to do stuff with her friends that weekend. Ok, understandable. Still, it would have been nice to have them waiting to finish my biggest challenge to date. Oh well. If I can find somewhere to stay I'll just have a 'me' weekend. More taper tantrums!8 -
10/1 16.41 miles, 1615 days on the run, 797 days HM+ Streak, Running Partner E, Turkey Trot (running down the road in front of us)

Running Partner A & E were with me today.
Today's run completes my journey "Run Around the Earth"
I have run 24,902 miles since May 1, 2018 (with 5.16 miles over really)
1622 days on the run (804 days HM or greater distance streak)
E started the run with me this morning and had to leave @13, A crossed the virtual line with me @15.1 miles. I went for another 5 miles just because.
*dew claws up* it is a groovy day out there!11 -
Hope your toe gets better soon @shanaber!
Nice running @tarun_yadavA. Not sure if the Green Bag Packers was a typo or over the pond that's what you call the Packers, but regardless I like it!
Good to see you back @noblsheep! But sorry about your fall. Hope you can get better soon!
Pure awesomeness @AlphaHowls running around the world is back home today! You are one of a kind!
I did 16 miles this morning. Plan called for 12 + 4@ race pace. It was a very pleasant mid 60's with light rain the first hour. I think that helped give me an extra push. The whole 16 miles ended up being exactly at race pace. The last 4 we're sub 9. So feeling better about my chances to get that sub 4 hour marathon. But there are a million things that could derail that plan. But thinking all positive thoughts 😏

@Scott6255 hahaha! Autocorrect!
Never quite got took to 🏈.
Too similar to Rugby here, but different enough for me to be, "nope not for me!".
(American sports - much prefer Basketball! But London lost its official NBA game during Covid and no idea when it might be back 😥.
NFL though... I dunno, the massive amount of American expats here, seems to be more and more games every year. Joke here is that Jacksonville easier to sell out in London than it is back in Florida!)
As for the Packers... Joked with my ex-girlfriend awhile back, that over the 20 or so years, I could count on one hand the number of people from Wisconsin I'd bump into in London... Mostly people from big cities, students on semester abroad etc etc. Today though... Wow! Like so many of them all in one go!5 -

There you go. Told you that I'd catch up with my running goal this week To be honest, I only went out in a somewhat cold drizzle because there was a 10km badge by Garmin this weekend. Observation: I managed to run 7km (65mins), but only I loaded up on carbs the whole day. Afterwards my legs basically gave up and I had to walk a few times. Was also 1min/km slower than in July. But doesn't matter. Me happy.6 -
@tarun_yadavA - huge Packers fan here! My college roommate dated Johnnie Grey who went on to be a GB Hall of Fame free safety. He would get us tickets when they played in LA. My husband actually got us tickets a few times for my birthday to go to GB to see the games. It is quite an event beyond just the game. How do the people in London feel about American football though? I would not think there would be much interest in it really other than as you say for the ex-pats.
Also love the pictures of London!
Hey there @noblsheep! Hope you are feeling well enough to run soon! I think that 'hop test' that @eleanorhawkins mentioned was a @MobyCarp thing. If I recall he would 'test' by hopping down his hallway while waiting for his eggs to cook.
@eleanorhawkins - I hope you feel better soon! I am so sorry your family can't be there to cheer you on at your big race. I can empathize though because mine never came to any of my races other than to pick me up afterwards, even if they traveled with me.
YAY! Congratulations @AlphaHowls - welcome home!! That is a long trip running around the world! So impressed that you made it! It is extra special that it happened just as we are passing by and waving at you!
Awesome race pace 16 mile run @Scott6255!! When is your race?
Thanks everyone my toe is a bit better today. Actually wasn't sore until after my run. I have problems off and on with it and typically it gets cranky when I cut the nail too short or if the nail breaks. My pcp wants me to see a podiatrist but I have put it off...maybe next summer. I really don't want to have to be off running for any length of time when it is finally getting to be nice running weather.
I took Hobbes out this morning and it felt wonderful initially. My legs were feeling unusually tired from the moment I got up (weird since I hadn't run since Wednesday) but I figured to just work through it. The first half felt amazing, it was sunny but coolish and there was hardly anyone else on the trail (odd for Saturday morning). I thought if it was busy I would run up and over to another trail on the opposite side of the river and add in a couple of miles. When I got to the turn around though my legs were really talking to me so I opted to just do my normal turnaround. I thought I was really slowing down on the 2nd half coming back but all the miles were about the same pace. I did stop to rest a couple of times and got Hobbes some water.
We ran into a running acquaintance who is quite a bit older than me (!) and runs with Jr and SR HS kids who have never run before. It's a program called Kids Run LA and over a series of months they build up to run the LA Marathon. He is so good with them, herding them along and making sure none is left behind, helping them build up the mental attitude as well as the physical. I think he is at least 78 now and has been doing this for 12 years! He told me they will run in a few 5ks and 10ks, 2 HMs and then the Marathon in March.

Also the osprey was back today. No friends with him this time though...4

I had started this post a couple of days ago. Not sure why I didn't finish it - thought I had. But, got on today and there it was, in "draft." So, sorry it's long and disjointed. You are all doing great with your running!
@jane_76 So glad to hear that you had a great day one run. I hope your knee is still happy this morning. Sorry to read that your knee was swollen the next day. I hope it is better by now. Glad the physio didn't tell you to quit running, just to take it slow and easy.
Nice run @shanaber. Love your pictures and video. It does look and sound like it is complaining to the vulture about the crows.
Sounds like a great recovery run @eleanorhawkins. Yes. Please be careful on those steep trails, but I'm glad that your confidence is coming back.
@polskagirl01 That's a lot of walnuts and fruit. I have walnut trees too, but they are black walnuts and not really good to eat and so hard to crack. I hope you can get an answer to your health issues.
@tarun_yadavA That cake looks delicious.
@yirara Sounds like you did the best you could. Hope you are feeling better. Sounds like you had a great run today.
@Scott6255 I'm glad that your legs felt good after your run on the 6th. Awesome running today! I can't imagine running a sub 4 hr marathon. You're awesome.
@martaindale I hope your friend did well with the Ironman....will probably read about it later in the thread. People who do that amaze me too. Just read the update. Sounds like she did amazingly well and I do love that they had the men and women on separate days. I can't imagine exercising that intensely for over 13 hours! Your hill country run sounds brutal. You're awesome.
@AlphaHowls Glad you will be home when we get there. So cool and thanks for the information. Funny that your town's claim to fame is an invisible witch. Apple cider sounds great, and your home looks lovely. CONGRATULATIONS on making it home! Amazing!
@shanaber Ingrown toenails are painful. Dad used to have them all the time - so bad that the doctor would cut them out for him. I hope yours feel better today. Glad you had a good run today.
Thanks for the pictures @tarun_yadavA . Looks like another great place to run.
@noblsheep Oh no! I have been wondering about you and where you were. I hope you heal quickly!
@eleanorhawkins So sorry you are sick and that you will be going to your race alone. I hope you feel better quickly and and a great "me" weekend for the race.

6 Oct - Ran 2.30 miles - walked 0.80 miles - in town while on lunch break
7 Oct - Walked 1.00 mile - driveway laps
8 Oct - Walked 1.00 mile - driveway laps
I didn't realize that I hadn't posted my runs since Tuesday! Somehow life got in the way again.
Wednesday, my mom, neighbor and I went to an apple orchard for some fresh apples and then stopped for lunch at an interesting cafe. Seating is in an old school bus and everything they serve is either BBQ'd or smoked, including their desserts. Had to try out the smoked pecan pie. It was really good.
Thursday, We had decided to mow mom's lawn after I got off work at 4:30, so knew if I was going to run, I would have to do it at work. So, during my break I went out and did a modified Short Interval Run on a fairly flat street in town. I used my warm up and cool down walks as Zone 1 part of the planned run. I actually ran 5 min Zone 2, 8 x (1 min Zone 5/2 min Zone 1). I was pleased that my Zone 5 runs averaged 8:56 min/mile. Pretty pleased with that. A funny thing happened when I was doing my Zone 2 run. I was running up a fairly steep hill. As a gentleman and his wife, who were probably close to my age, walked past me, he said, "You're just showing off." LOL
Yesterday was a rough day at daycare. I'm pretty sure the kids knew that the full moon was on Sunday and since they wouldn't be in school, they would act like it was a full moon on Friday. I was mentally exhausted when I got home, so did a mile walk on the driveway instead of running.
Today, I have just felt off and been in a mood. So, I chose another driveway walk over a long run. We'll see how things go tomorrow.
Waving to @AlphaHowls !6 -

@shanaber that guy with the kids sounds wonderful, we need more people like him in the world.
Re: toenails, do you know to cut a little V in the centre of the nail in question? I have suffered with them since my teens, had to have one surgically removed due to infection and they taught me to do that with the other one. It encourages growth 'inward' to fill in the V instead of out to the sides. Might be worth a try.6 -
Morning all.
Got another 7 in3 -
@tarun_yadavA That's a great pace for a hangover run! Way to get out there and get it done.1
-
Happy Sunday all! I’m in Utah for some hiking and camping in Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Escalante. I may not even be in town when all the Run the World peeps pass through!
Congratulations @alphahowls! What an accomplishment! Thanks for the description of your town. We’ve been blessed with rains this summer so all is still green at my house. Not always the case this time of year but it should make for some beautiful leaves this Fall. The trees are already starting to change.

@Teresa502 niiiice! Enjoy! Heard hiking "the narrows" is meant to be amazing 😊0 -
@eleanorhawkins If I remember correctly, we have kids about the same age. Mine is hard-core into friends come first mode right now too. Sorry the family won’t be there for your big race. Mine is there less and less these days too. I have really grown to enjoy the selfishness of getting to do a race weekend exactly the way I want.
@shanaber I love the idea of that kids run program! Such a neat way to introduce kids to the sport. If running with my own kid is any indication of other parents’ experience, it’s probably more fun for the kids to have other kids around.
@noblsheep I rarely boulder anymore because I was too worried about getting hurt while falling. I stick to sport climbing almost exclusively but bouldering is such a good upper body workout. I like to do some easy climbs every now and then just to work those explosive power muscles that sport climbing doesn’t hit as much. Hope you feel better soon and glad your fall wasn’t more serious.
@AlphaHowls Big high five for such a cool accomplishment!
3 -
@eleanorhawkins - Thanks, I had not heard about that but will look up how to do it and give it a try.
@Teresa502 - Enjoy Bryce, Zion and Escalante! Don't know if you recall we went there last February and it was amazing! Not sure what I was expecting but I don't feel like words can describe it, it was so beautiful! My husband doesn't hike so I only did a few short ones (Canyon Overlook was great). I wanted to do the Emerald Pool trails but when we were there they were closed. Are you camping? Hope the weather is great and it isn't too crowded!
We are actually talking about going back again in February weather permitting and doing the loop from Zion to the other National Parks (Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonland and the Grand Canyon).
One comment about the Kids/Students Run LA program - a lot of these kids are from disadvantaged areas/families who would probably not have parents who are runners or any running role models really.
From their website: To make this journey possible, SRLA provides students and their SRLA Leaders with training shirts, running shoes, entry fees and transportation to the races, a Marathon uniform, Marathon Day support, and more. With most SRLA students coming from underserved communities, SRLA is steadfast in keeping its program FREE for all students and promoting healthy lifestyles and goal setting in diverse, predominantly Latinx communities.
Rest/recovery day today. Will likely do some cross training later this afternoon.
5 -
Back from a weekend conference. No running. Too much mental energy required, but nice to see some coworkers.5
-
Just an easy 3 mile treadmill recovery run today.
