WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2023

Been reading all the posts but too tired to wish everyone well. Not much happening here. Caregiving goes on. I did some errands today and tried to read a little. My attention span is not great. And there is something to do every 20 minutes or so. I hope everyone is doing well and those in the cold areas are warm and comfortable!
Best,
Rosemarie from GA13 -
Ok no fish truck tonight. I had toast with tomato, cheese and cucumber. Tomorrow husband wishes to go to an Asian restaurant, so I had to choose, but not both. I chose the Asian food. I will hope they return in our area this month. The downside of your favorite fish restaurant being a food truck that travels all over Washington.🙃

I keep my diary set at 1100 calories, but if I exercise I often eat back some. I've been exercising about 300 calories a day. Maybe it's time to check my food portions.
Annie in Delaware
Do you weigh your food?
Also, with exercise, I underestimate the amount I'm burning.
If I look at a calories-burned calculator, I put my weight in as about 10 or 20 kg less than I am now ... closer to my goal weight.
And/or I round the time I exercised down.
If I walk for 65 minutes, I might round down to 60 minutes.
If I cycle and we stop briefly a couple times, I will only count the riding time.
Same with lifting weights ... I'm usually "lifting weights" for about 20 minutes, but if I'm honest with myself, I actual lift the weights for 10 or 15 minutes and the rest of the time is short breaks in between sets.
Same with gardening ... I might be out there for 2 hours, but I'm probably only really physically active for 30-60 minutes. The rest of the time, I might be kneeling and pulling the weeds right in front of me which isn't burning much.
I don't count stretching, yoga, situps, hanging out the laundry, housework (unless it's an unusually heavy day of housework), walking inside my office or house, walking inside the shops at lunch, etc. Those are all part of my normal 1500-1600/day maintenance calorie burn.
When it comes to weighing me, I weigh every day and I have discovered I've got a pattern.
Saturday morning will likely be my lowest weight of the week.
Sunday will likely be the same as Saturday or close to it.
Then I'll gradually gain weight ... Monday will be a little bit higher, Tuesday a little bit higher. Then I'll bob slightly up and down for the rest of the week around the higher weight.
If I've kept active and kept my food quantity down, Saturday morning will be my lowest weight of the week.
Today is Saturday ... from last Saturday, I've dropped 0.5 kg. From my highest weight this past week on Thursday, I've dropped 1 kg.
And I am 0.5 kg away from where I was before my nose and hip surgeries in mid-December.

Worked then the soup kitchen.
Anne DE – you, I know, are aware that muscle weighs more than fat (well, that’s not exactly accurate. The muscle may weigh as much as the fat, but it takes up less space). What gave you the protein boost?
Kylia – happy birthday!
Rita – almost all of my clothes are from the Salvation Army (except underwear, etc). Not Vince
Got most of the Christmas decorations in the garage and put away
Was mainly serving at the soup kitchen. I like doing that
Frustrating at work but got what needed to be done done. I asked Jerry first to rotate the onions, I got “you can get to these”. “But I don’t know how many I’ll need tomorrow so it’s probably best to rotate them”. Actually, that should have been done without my even saying anything.
Then “remember, today is Friday. I’ll need two buckets of pickles opened, separated, and drained” “I know, I know” Later that day “I need two buckets of pickles opened, separated and drained” “I already did one” “Thank you, but I need two, one for today and one for tomorrow”. “Well, I’m not going to drain them” “I need two opened, separated and drained” He eventually did do it, but it took some doing from me. I know he’s somewhat mad at me because I won’t take him home, but that’s too bad. Tomorrow I’m going to ask this one gal if on her list of things for Jerry to do each day she adds one more “ask Michele if there’s anything else that needs to be done”. I don’t always know when he’s left and if someone offers to take him home before I get things done (like Pickles opened), I’m stuck. I know in my heart that Brian would do it for me. But to me, that isn’t his job, it’s Jerry’s. Brian makes the sandwiches and he should be there for the customer, not doing Jerry’s job.
Pip – yea for the booties staying on! Love the slipcovers
Rebecca – beautiful you (not with the beard, tho)

Word of the year: APPRECIATE; today I appreciate the crisp cool air of my morning walk.
#2 Practice fairness today by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes: I did this with a camper who I received complaints about. I put myself in his shoes when speaking with him. He was a very lonely man who only had his dogs (one barking, one loose) and the people he meets at campgrounds. Made me more compassionate when talking to him about the dogs.\

When I learned to drive at 50, it was to help get Lee to the doctors etc. Now after transplant, he is more comfortable driving, than dealing with the stress of my driving. Sadly, learning that late in life, I don't have the instincts as a driver, more as a passenger. So each time getting behind the wheel, things a normal driver would do instinctively, I have to consciously think about. So that fact alone, I let him drive, for however long that may be. When he can't drive due to eyesight, or illness, I guess I would arrange other transport. 🙃👍🏻
I am glad you get out and about by yourself. Time apart from a spouse is helpful in marriage health I think.
Enjoy your sun!

My driving history can be described as on and off.
I learned to drive at 15, and drove quite a bit until about 23 or 24-ish. We had moved to Winnipeg, my husband at the time used the car for work, and I found work I could walk to at first, then work I could cycle to.
When he and I separated, he took the car and I was glad to be rid of motorised vehicles. For the next 5.5 years, I was car-free!
Then I started university and borrowed a car from my parents for a couple years, then bought one. In those 4 years, I did a lot of driving ... long drives. In the last 2 years of university, many weeks, I drove 1000 km a week.
I moved to Australia, we bought a van, and I drove quite a bit in the first year ... on the other side of the vehicle and road.
And then we moved into a town, and I stopped driving. So from 2010 to 2018, I could probably count on one hand the number of times I drove.
When my husband had his accident, I realised I would need to drive again. It was actually a few months after my husband came home from the hospital, that I sat in the driver's seat and began driving again.
However, I usually only drive on weekends and holidays and as little as possible then. I prefer to get around by bus, walking, cycling etc. On our weekend away last weekend, I drove up and back, but while we were there, the van was parked and we got some groceries, went out to dinner, etc. on foot.

Lisa —Thanks for your comment about DH. He is getting along okay. I spend time with him in the evenings while he enjoys watching Gun Smoke.
Pip— It looks like your pup has good boots to protect his feet on your walks. 😊 Your trailer slip covers look great. 👍🏻
Kylia — HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂
Rebecca— Your comments make me smile 😊
Allie— Keeping fingers crossed that you are okay. 🤞🏻. Good news that Tom will take care of Alfie if needed. ⭐️
DH & I watched Gunsmoke this evening. He is now tucked in for the night. 😊
I’m in my place watching Doctor Ole. I enjoy the critters, and especially dogs. I miss my sweet old dog, Schooner. Eventually I hope to get a new puppy. It will be a while longer. Oh well, patience isn’t easy. :noway:

Vicki - I take potassium daily as well. Bananas here range from pea green and hard as a rock to nearly brown, which makes me gag; it is really hard to find ones that are edible. Unfortunately, if you do buy the green ones, they seem to go from green to rotten without getting edible in between. However, I'm concentrating right now on adding fiber into my diet too, and luckily, some of the fiber sources also supply potassium, like sweet potatoes, white beans, and regular potatoes. I love any kind of potatoes, so that's helpful, and made a cassoulet the other night with white beans.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
In the cycling world, potassium is one of the things we also need ... we need all the electrolytes, but potassium is important.
To get potassium, we eat bananas, of course, but another useful food which can be carried on long rides is dried apricots.
https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Potassium-HealthProfessional/ - this one has a list including milligrams (mg) per serving
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325728#dried-apricots
I also use "half salt" or "lite salt" on my food which is a combination of sodium and potassium.

Vicki- Kileigh is 13. It has been amazing watching her growth on the stage. She is an amazing young lady.
Thank all of you for the comments and wishes!
Yesterday was awesome! The only sad part was my new bracelet had to go back to jewelers. It was missing a diamond and needed to be sized. I haven't even taken a picture of it yet. Dinner at Cooper's hawk was wonderful! The filet mignon melted in your mouth. The company was awesome. I over indulged in food‐ over by 900 calories-ouch! Oh well, doesn't happen often! My dessert was good, but DH's chocolate cake was awesome! Brought hone my birthday truffles. After a late night Thursday and wine with dinner, I was actually asleep at 845! A little draggy this morning, but feeling pretty good.
Gotta get ready for work. Have an awesome day!
Make the best choices you can at the moment!
Remember that life is short and enjoy it!
Love to you all!

Feel Good Feb and/or Exercising the Alphabet in FebruaryFeel Good Feb
https://www.actbelongcommit.org.au/programs-initiatives/feelgood-feb/
Exercising the Alphabet in February
In other words, on February 1, you'd walk to a street that starts with A or do an exercise video hosted by someone whose name starts with A or something ... A.
On February 2, you'd go swimming at a Beach or play a game of Baseball or something ... B.
On February 3, you'd go Cycling or Climb some stairs or something ... C.
and so on.
There are, of course, 26 letters in the alphabet and 28 days in February, so you'd have 2 free days if you didn't exercise those days or couldn't fit in the next letter of the alphabet.
I have listed several January highlights so that meets the calendar suggestion for February 1...
And I walked to the Asian "dollar store" next to the Asian grocers and bought Art supplies at lunch today. That'll be my A.
Put myself in someone else's shoes ... I've been treating my difficult work colleague with kindness by talking to her about her son, complimenting her skirt, talking quietly and gently to her and so on.
And today, I walked to Bathurst Street to Buy some Books. I also climbed stairs in my Building.
Watch a movie that reminds me of kindness ... probably not tonight!
C is for Climbing and walking on Collins St!
Saturday --
Cleaned the kitchen, cleaned the bathroom, caught up on some paperwork, read and coloured.
D is for exercising Downstairs!
Rowing - 16 minutes
Walking - 38 minutes
Weights - 10 minutes
Take a picture of three things that make you happy --

Our atelier in action. We were making bookmarks. DH made two amazing ones. I am a bit disappointed with mine. Edie did one 'abstract', and then made one with a cellophane pocket for glitter. She then made a coaster for the boy whose party she is going to this afternoon, and a card.
A good morning's work. I was working in the empty space!
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

I am enjoying a quiet morning here at my MIL’s. The wind is gusting at 38 km/hour at a temperature of -29C it feels like -44C with the wind. It is supposed to taper off in about 7 hours.
Tonight we are going to my brothers for a birthday celebration. His birthday is the 10th and our daughter that is with us celebrates hers tomorrow. Ou r eldest celebrated hers yesterday.
We only have 3 more days here. We are nervous about leaving my MIL here, financially she is in a bind. We can’t help her at all if we aren’t home and working though. I don’t know how much we’ll be able to, but we’re going to have to.
My FIL took care of everything and spoiled his daughter and granddaughter that were here. They are expecting the house to be given to the GD, my MIL wants to honour his wishes and isn’t willing to sell so that she doesn’t live in poverty while trying to pay for it so she can have it. I hope that we can help her see this won’t work when she knows what she’ll have for income when the payments from the government start.
My MIL buys most of the groceries, pays the power, cell phone, mortgage and car payment. My SIL uses the cell phone and the car and uses her mother’s money for gas. It’s terrible.
We are hoping to have her come to our place in May and maybe she can be taken care of for a bit.
We wanted her to do a POA and will before we left but she wouldn’t.
On a brighter note, I visited a couple of favourite cousins the last couple of days. I also visited one of my Mom’s 1st cousins, he is 97 and is still living alone at his home. He even took us to his basement to see a steam engine that my great grandfather has made.
There have been some highlights on this trip at least.

Ahhh, those first sips of a hot cup of tea in the morning are just pure bliss...
Was out cold by 8pm, possibly because of the exercise, and slept 'til nearly 6. Even the Fitbit says that I slept for nearly nine hours. Learning to go back to sleep has been one of my better changes since my retirement.
Our only plans for the weekend are brush burning to clean up last week's ice storm destruction; there were branches and even whole trees destroyed. Anything large enough, we'll cut up for firewood for next winter. I think we may have made our last fire in the fireplace for this season. Once Corey's ready to start, I'll go out and do as much as I can to help without overdoing.
Speak of the devil, Corey's up and around, earlier than he wanted to be, but has retired to the bedroom with his laptop and a cup of coffee. I'll ferry fresh coffee in there about every 30-45 minutes for the remainder of the morning. I indulge him unmercifully, but it makes me happy to do something for him, as he works hard every weekday in order for us to be able to live the life we want. I am so grateful for that...
One chore is done--my tax docs have been sent off to my best friend. She will look over everything and get us the biggest possible refund, and we'll sign electronically. I always run our numbers through Turbo Tax or H&R Block online just to give her something to shoot for. She also does my kids' taxes, as both of them have figured out that she charges less than H&R Block and does a better job.
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend,
Love,
Lisa in AR

Barbie- The reminder about repetitive complaining & repeated gratitude attractions. Really does make a difference!
Beth I did take one of Dr. Li's mini courses, it wasn't very expensive and the cost included his "Eat to Beat your Diet" (non-dieting) book that comes out next month. I went to his YouTube home page yesterday, found many videos that seem provide the content of his classes.
How's your family doing? Hope all is well at your mom's facility.
Lisa - I visited your blog. There's a lot to learn from it that I can apply to my own life. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experiences.
Kylia - what a nice birthday bash! Good for you enjoying everything. Now I'm hungry for
chocolate cake!
Vicki - hope you can get the PT appointment for your knee.
Heather - the "art bug" you and your DH brought home from the cruise was the best part of it, don't you think? Something new and exciting for you both and the grands to look forward to.
Rosemarie - I think of you often. Are you able to get outside and get some fresh air these days? Not sure what your weather is like. I'm never sure what MINE is like, lol.
Annie good job on the protein! What did you eat?
Regarding ultra processed food - for me, it's kind of like sugar - it's hard to avoid it completely. I guess my goal is about 90%. But again, its a goal. A couple days ago I used store bought Butter Chicken simmer sauce and made a big skillet of chicken thighs. Very yummy and plenty for the freezer. I figured the protein outweighed the ingredients, and I made jasmine rice and broccoli to go along with it.
I love Indian food but don't want to buy all the spices (expensive these days) and go to all the work for something I only eat occasionally.
Mini waffle irons - do any of you use them and if so, what brand do you like? I dug out my ancient (2006 ) waffle iron yesterday. It did a pretty good job with Kodiak waffles. The first waffle was perfect and easy to remove. The second one - I added a few mini chocolate chips and it stuck. Not sure if it was the chips or just that I didn't have the batter consistency right and/or the temperature wasn't right. I was able to finally peel it off, but hard to clean. I see they now make them with removable plates - I like that idea.
Tara Woodcox on FB used hers to make a high protein egg sandwich, cooking the egg and then warming some ham on it. I need to re-watch the video and see if I can determine the make (or message her, it's worth a shot!)
My shower repair - the several coats of flex seal on the leaking plastic shower pipe didn't do the trick. But I found some heavy duty sticky tape in DH's collection. It didn't stop the leak but diverted the water so it didn't squirt me in the eye or shoot out on the bathroom floor. It will do in a pinch. That whole shower is on the replacement list.
Better get crackin. Make it a great weekend!
Lanette
SW WA State where yesterday's wind storm just produced a few gusts, no power loss. I think areas north of Seattle probably got the brunt of it again.

Good morning ladies!
Allie take care of yourself! Hope you feel healthy soon.
Machka I measure by volume almost everything I eat. But I can pay more attention to accuracy. I think I've been putting a bigger spoonful of honey in my tea, drinking more tea, and then getting sugar cravings and going after chocolate. I will have to watch that. Thanks!
Michele and Lanette for protein I eat eggs and lactose-free yogurt and tilapia and chicken breast, and I put protein powder in my oatmeal. I eat beef on Sunday, but lately I had leftover beef into the week.
The protein powder is technically ultra processed, extracted from peas. But I eat it anyway. I think the additives are worse than the processing, and this doesn't have many additives.
It's a cold sunny day here. Laundry is today's chore, entirely indoors. Then dumbbells tonight.
Have a great day ladies!

Do you have a food scale?
It's quite enlightening!
It's also a bit disheartening when we realise just how small portions really are once they are weighed.
And yes, chocolate calories add up very quickly!

Lanette - I was talking to Edie about it while we were painting. I said, "Isn't it amazing that just because we decided to go along to a watercolour course on the cruise, just for something different to do, that we started doing all this! Just one small decision changed our lives!"
It really is extraordinary luck that I went wandering along there, with no idea, on the first day, while DH was lying in bed, seasick. I bagged him a place and grabbed us both the painting sets they were giving out for free. Sat down and had a lesson on colour mixing. Not a clue!
It's wonderful that we both enjoy it. And both grandgirls are very arty.
Tracey - So sorry to hear about your MIL's difficulties. I absolutely loathe financial situations. It scares me. Well done to you for trying to help, but you can't help those who won't help themselves. Hugs.
DDIL sent me this latest photo of their house renovation. Yikes!
Renting the apartment was the best money they ever spent!
Of course, costs are going up all the time. Fortunately, the two week holiday they booked for May (thinking they might be in the house or in some horrible rental) has been reduced by the holiday company to one week! (I don't know the details) So that will save them some money as they got quite a big refund for compensation. They don't really mind now as they live opposite the beach anyway! (I said I want a go on their paddle board)
Love to all. Veal escalopes and spinach in crême fraiche tonight. Plus an Inspector Morse from 1991.
PS - I did get all my exercise in today. I even dragged myself onto the rowing machine after Edie left. Phew!

Barbie--Thank you for getting us started on the new month. I am caught up to Feb and happy to be here with all of you.
Lisa--I have been having bad leg and toe cramps and the doctor decided it was one of my meds so stopped taking that and it got better for a while now getting them. Usually in the evenings when I am trying to relax or when I go to bed. Have had them wake me up in the night, one night it was about every hour. I take potassium, eating bananas. I have started rubbing my legs with biofreeze roll on pain meds at night and so far is better.
Allie--Kids city looks fun and Miles looked very happy to be there.
Tracey--So happy that you got to spend time with your mom. Sorry about the mess your inlaws are in. Pray that you all were able to figure it out and to their benefit.
Sue--Happy Birthday. Hope you had a great time.
Debbie--Saying prayers for Destiny.
Kylia--Love the bears! Happy Birthday.
Katla--Hope you and DH are feeling better. Sure hope you are not getting the flu.
Heather--Sorry to hear about DH sister. Family come with so many layers and twists and turns.
I am all caught up. I agree about doing the best we can. Seems every time I set goals I end up jinxing myself. I am down 1.2 pounds for last month. Not alot but better than a gain and it is a work in progress. As for exercise since the problem with my knee I am concerned about going back to gym. Going to make an appointment with PT ( we can have one free evaluation a year) and see what they say and then talk to my doctor about ordering it for me.
Going to be another busy weekend. Going to Omaha tomorrow to support our DGD in swing singing. Then Sunday after church our CMA group is doing the meal at Salvation Army. I have about 10 people lined up to help so should go well. We usually serve about 75-100 people. Our group does this twice a year. First Sunday in Feb and Nov.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE
VickiTry taking magnesium for your leg cramps. I have been using that and the leg cramps have disappeared, so I started giving them to DH too. He found it helped him too. There is roll on, creams, and magnesium oils you can rub on your legs as well if you don’t want to take the supplements. Won’t hurt to try. I hope this helps, even a little!
