I am Dawn, I live in South Eastern British Columbia.
I joined this thread in November of 2018, a daily drinker at the time
My primary goal with drinking less is weight loss.
My usual goal is 16-20 AF days for the month,
I had 16AF days in April.
I do this diary style, I normally post the next morning.
Thursday May 11 - 2 drinks. Going to try to be AF both Friday and Saturday - this will be a real departure for me, but I have reasons to want to be fresh for Saturday and Sunday.
Friday May 12 - AF - Reluctantly, but I am very busy now until Tuesday night, so I have to keep my AF resolve. Tonight, Saturday, will be a challenge, closing night for a play (and the season) at a small theatre here, it will involve "champagne" and snacks. However, Sunday at the restaurant will be extremely busy for Mother's Day and I will need to be very fast so I must try to stay off of the booze tonight.
Rolling total - 8AF day out of 12 days.3 -
@MissMay I love that you have been here so long and hope I will also be able to ‘look back’ through the years. You are inspiring!
@Womona have fun prepping your boat to get out on the water! You have a great plan for exercise.
@dawnbgethealthy I know what you mean about shifting your mindset from the usual Fri/Sat drinks to abstaining for a good reason. Not aways easy.
Planning on getting outside to take a drive and go to breakfast with DH soon. AF until tomorrow and will enjoy a bit of champagne with my homemade brunch.
Wishing you continued resolve and a Happy Mother’s Day!

Bibbs update...The feral cat Middle Daughter brought into her house has almost accepted his confinment. He actually adopted ONE toy...the green shark that Scrappy has trapped. This mud room/kitty playroom standoff lasted for a couple hours, til Scrappy got bored and wandered off. Now Bibbs hides the shark under furniture or his own body. Still seems to have no interest in the two upper floors of the house where his people and nemisis go after dark.

@Hopeful0087 100% not overstepping. I put my worries on an online public forum, so people will comment. And it’s okay. There are times I need support from internet strangers. Although this group doesn’t seem like strangers.
I quit Facebook in 2013. I was in a pretty toxic job and I was looking at it at home and seeing people from that toxic job on there and it all was just overlapping and bad. I noped out. One of the best things I ever did for my mental health!
Yeah, I totally agree. But it's especially difficult when you DO leave a toxic situation, online or otherwise, only to be drawn back into it again. With the Facebook situation I basically feel like I'm being used as some kind of bobo doll toy for other people to take thier aggression out on. It is extremely stressful, especially when online begins to affect your real life.
But I agree with you that leaving is the best option. I need to walk away though with the knowledge that damage has probably already been done and there is nothing I can do about it. All I can do is be left imagining the worst. Not a good place to be. But I have to suck it up and take it on the chin (again) and just try to move on.
I don't know what will happen with my alcohol intake, probably go through the roof. Such is life.
I will just come off everything online I think, including this. I will wish you all well and say goodbye.2 -
@dawnbgethealthy ...yes, @ahoy_m8 's introduction of Thich Nhat Hanh's writings had me slipping down that rabbit hole also. So much to think about...
"Happiness is available. Please help yourself to it". Something to post-it-note to see first thing in the morning. 🤗
Grandson's 19th birthday...buying himself a "reliable" used car today to replace his "dream car" which broke down regularly. At that age I bought a brand new Mustang..." It ain't the 60's anymore, Gramma !!" Still living with [and paying rent to] his drunk Dad, and after one horrible night of intoxication Grandson does not drink anything stronger than Mountain Dew. That night caused him to write a letter of apology to his Mom, and vow to remember that addiction is in his genes. Held strong for a year, so thinking it might hold.
First night since Eldest daughter has arrived from Louisiana that I plan to have wine with dinner. Tomorrow she and Middle Daughter will come over to roast hot dogs & marshmallows at my mini fire pit. Gossip & giggles.
Happy Mother's Day, y'all.
@Hopeful0087 ...this is a LESS ALCOHOL site. Nobody perfect, we are all aiming for different goals. I abstain for 9 months or a year, then attempt to moderate. Basically I LIKE the taste of wine, but not the loss of control that comes with over indulgence. It's a fine line, a narrow tightrope greased with good intentions.
We do seem mostly upbeat, sharing photography, artwork, travels, pets, cross country moves, proud mom 'n pop moments....but there are job losses, illnesses, unreasonable spouses, parents with dementia, and by sharing that we can understand that we are not alone.
Abstinence makes the body grow smaller...lost 5 pounds since ED arrived from the Southland....Yipee !5 -

Oh the drama! I love it!5 -
Had wine with lunch which made me yawn like crazy ,and sleepy all day, but I got my errands done. Nice little nap and no wine with dinner, so I’ll take the win of only one glass! Usually I have two on a weekend night. Looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight. Fingers crossed for the boat launch tomorrow!4

I am seeing improvements when I stick to 1 spirit unit per drink, but with my drinking sessions I am feeling like Father Dougal McGuire in that Speed 3 episode of Father Ted, where if his milk float exceeds 4 miles per hour, bad things will happen.4 -

Thank you for the Bibbs update : - )
I enjoyed the photo and story behind it immensely!

Did I want to join all of my friends in drinks? Yes, but I resisted. I may have a couple of drinks tonight after a busy shift on my usual day off. We'll see, leaving that open.

@forestdweller1 great update about being intentional with our choices, happiness,
and the purpose of this thread - for those who want support from likeminded people seeking Less Alcohol.
My DH took me to brunch yesterday for early moms day and I enjoyed divine French toast and coffee. I noticed two young mothers with their two young daughters next to us ordered bloody Mary’s and champagne. It did not occur to me to have any A which tells me my mindset is shifting in the right direction.
It is a beautiful day out and I am going on a longer than usual jog/walk before it warms up. I need to compensate for all the extra goodies here and there this week.
Planned all food and drinks for today, staying within my calorie budget. Will have some champagne later, eat clean and watch my garden grow. Looking forward to “no entertaining of others” on Mother’s day which is also a big change for me this year.
May you enjoy the day whatever your Sunday plans! Happy Mothers Day! 💐

@globalhiker ~ Thanks! I like your idea of a time limit. I know about the Keep going and going and have been guilty the past few days...
@Womona ~ Thank you. We walked the house on Friday 5 times! The Physical Therapist came yesterday (Sat) and gave him exercises and also walked the stairs with him. Today - he walked up the stairs on his own, so progress is being made! Congrats on winning your tennis match. I love tennis, was never any good but like to pretend that I was🙂

Kudos to your grandson on his car purchase and his resilience for alcohol! Tough lesson, but he learned early!
@Fursian ~ Thanks - progress is showing!
The Month recap to stay accountable5/1 AF ~ Yipee! 💚 - Finished April with 3 days straight AF! I changed a lot of things in the past couple of weeks - I'm not sure which one is working or if it's the combination. I lost 9lbs in April. I can't tell you the last time that happened. April 1 to April 15 - 3lbs, April 16 to April 30 - 6 lbs!!!My 2023 Stats...
5/2 A ~ 🍷🍷🍷'eh. 1:1 for May but did string a few days in a row. I plan to be AF today and Thursday. Friday is Cinco de Mayo and my husband is already talking about Mexican so there might be a margarita or two.
5/3 AF ~ Yippee! 💚There's this window when I get home from work. About 30 minutes after my arrival for about an hour... If I get past that point, I'm usually ok. When there's nothing really stressing me, then it seems to be just habit for me.
5/4 AF ~ Yippee 💚 Today is Cinco De Mayo. Husband wants Mexican food and Margaritas. 😲😮🤭. I've already plugged planned food/drink into MFP and its going to be a tough one but I'm going to try to stay at my calorie budget. I have a salad planned for lunch which comes in at 300 calories. That leaves me plenty of room for a (one) margarita and a chicken taco meal. That leaves me with 45 calories to spare. Oops, forgot the chips and guacamole. 🤞🏽 I think I will go for an extra walk at lunch today!🙂

5/8 A ~🍷🍷 Need to get back on track today after a long, fun weekend full of drinks and food! Friday was Cinco de Mayo. Tried hard to make those calories fit within budget and have only 1 margarita #fail. Went to the Zoo on Saturday and walked around for 4 + hours with family (Grandson). It was a cool, wet and rainy day so the animals were VERY active. Usually they are just lying around asleep. After all that walking, we stopped at the Granite City Brewery. Had a burger to die for and a glass of wine. Came home to watch the Kentucky Derby and had a few cocktails. Sunday was back to a "normal" kind of day. Spent the morning cutting bushes and pulling weeds, then relaxed in the evening cooking on the grill (it was beautiful outside) and a couple glasses of wine. Today should be AF for sure and back on calorie budget! Update: Calories ok, but had wine.
5/9 A ~ 🍷🍷Long day yesterday. Husband had knee replacement surgery and I didn't plan very well for "me". Was hungry most of the day, only remedied by snacks. Couldn't bring outside food into the waiting room and they only had snacks and I didn't want to leave the area in case their were updates.
5/10 A ~🍷🍷 Another long day yesterday. The hospital is 1.5 hours away from home (he wanted a specific doctor) so another 3+ hours driving and they kept him another night. I did better with food choices but still over budget. The "all or none" in me is looking at a Sunday reset.
5/11 A ~🍷🍷🍷Yet another long day. So about 6 years ago, I use to commute to work 90 minutes each way, 5 days a week. After making a similar drive for three days in a row, I don't know how I managed. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do....
It was a stressful day. Husband was released🙂 but really not mobile at all. He "sort of" fell while getting into the car. I say "sort of" as the car broke his fall, he ended up sitting on the car floor. Someone eventually came out to help get him in the seat. We drove home. Took him over an hour to get from the car to inside the house. Once inside, he "thought" he was going to climb the 15 stairs to get to our bedroom. I said, nope, nadda, not going to happen. I said pick a couch or you can sleep in the recliner in the TV room and "maybe" we will try again tomorrow.
Then I cooked dinner and had wine!! Today I'm making him walk through the house every 60 to 90 minutes.

Sat 5/13: Drinks (4) - Well, Florida is turning out to be a challenge. I'm behind at work and it's hard not to feel like it's a vacation all the time. Yesterday, we rode our gravel bikes 40 miles on the Legacy Trail (they have expanded it!), hung out at the beach, where I had 2 drinks (Jai Alai IPA and a frozen Pina Colada). For dinner we ate at a local Italian restaurant where I had a glass of wine with delicious lobster ravioli. Later I had a Bud Lime Light with DH. I can still meet my goal of 16 AF days this month if I stick to plan. We're dining with old friends on Tuesday night. I'm making that an A day, but planning to stick to no more than 2 drinks.

Greetings! I have been partaking in this LA thread since June of ‘22 and it has made such a huge difference in my life. I have met some very kind and smart people on here and hope to continue to be 99% AF.
Thinking of May goals overwhelms me, there’s so much to do, so I’m just going to keep it simple:
99% AF
Weight loss of 4-5 pounds
Get moving
5/1-5/14- 14 out of 14 AF
I haven’t been feeling well and am experiencing a lot of fatigue. I’m not sure if it’s left over cancer fatigue or the medication I take to prevent recurrence. Whatever it is, I unsubscribe and want my normal routine back.
Still haven’t finished the podcast, 30 minutes to go.
Good to see all you lovely LA folks being accountable and checking in.6 -

Sunday May 14 - 2 drinks after work. I worked the last 2 weeks with only one day off, and not completely off from social engagements like I prefer, I would rather have stayed in my dirty garden clothes : - ). I am now one day into working 15 days straight, I take it where I can get it. Having drinks last night was so nice for me, good taste, little buzz. Planned AF for tonight to get my 10, Tuesday is up for grabs at this point.

5/14 A ~🍷🍷🍷Mother's Day. I splurged with cheese and crackers and a chocolate flavored wine. Now it's time to get back on the plan - both for eating and drinking. I did make this instant pot pepper steak for dinner yesterday. It was actually pretty good and serving was under 350 calories, then add rice. I was going to serve over cauliflower rice, next time.

Boat is now docked! I had a wonderful Mother’s Day. The boys helped me prep and launch the boat. Pictures? Ha! There was a great shot of the boys bringing it into our slip- and my phone was in the car so I missed it. Oh well. They took me out for Drinkies and Snackies afterwards. Just had one drink.
One glass of wine tonight. I may cut down to 1/2 glass when I’m at home. A few sips in and I feel nice and relaxed, then I’m choking down the rest. Didn’t even try to be AF tonight. I need to get better at that but when I’m hungry and tired after a long day, I actively decide against being AF during the week, which was always my goal.6 -
Hello to all my LA friends
LOL I am alive and well and things are moving forward with our move.
Just spent the past week in AR going to a kindergarten and high school graduations...I know what an age difference.
We head back to OH on Tue-Wed. then fly back to WA to finish packing and hit the road for the final move. I have not been AF but always mindful of amount and how often. It is stressful staying in either a relatives house or a hotel for the past 7 weeks and knowing we have another 6 weeks to go. ugg. I tend to have just a drink 3 out of 7 days, I will call that a win right now.
I have been trying to keep up with the posting but I am afraid I missed that mark.6 -

For me, it really opened my eyes on how hard alcohol can be on ALL our bodily systems. This published researcher has numerous other podcasts on a variety of health issues that look interesting as well.

Greetings, all. Thanks for all the updates. Love the kitty standoff over the green shark! So funny. Nice hearing everybody gear up for summer and the Mother's Day celebrations. But I'm sorry to hear you are still not feeling yourself, @joans1976. You know yourself best. Is it worth a call into your treatment team? It is soo good hearing from you, nonetheless. Like @MissMay, I am concerned when we don't hear from the regulars.
DD#2 asked me to visit her in NYC, which was the perfect distraction for my first Mother's Day without my own mother. We ate like kings all weekend! Dinner with roommates & moms Friday was the best. Miss them so much! Nicest people. Great laughs. Weather Sunday was glorious. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge then up to DD's current favorite restaurant in Williamsburg, then wandered around Williamsburg and took the Ferry back to Wall Street. My phone said we walked 11 miles Sunday just enjoying the day. She seemed a little sad to say goodbye and I'm not sure when we'll see each other next. The girls want a family vacation but it will have to be another long weekend because of a couple of their work schedules. I need to get off my butt and plan some stuff.
Alcohol over the weekend was pretty moderate -- never more than two at a time, but I did have one with lunch Sunday so 3 total for the day.6 -
