A lot of that is water your first week into it.6

Not uncommon to lose a lot the first week and it is mostly water. However be prepared to pare down to 2lbs a week if you're consistent on your diet. It WILL take time to lose 100lbs.

You're doing great, and you absolutely can do this.
The guys are right: A big drop at first is common, and much of it is reduced water retention, and less waste in your digestive tract on its way to the exit.
Later, the loss rate is likely to slow down (and that would be a good thing, because losing eight pounds every week long term wouldn't be healthy!).
You may even have a period sometime in the next 4-6 weeks where the scale goes up. If you've been consistent with your eating and activity, don't panic: It's just the water retention rebalancing. The scale will drop again in a week or so.
Hang in there, don't give up if that happens. That effect derails a lot of people. Don't let that happen to you.
Lose at a sensibly moderate rate, stick with it, learn and practice new habits that help you reach and maintain a healthy weight without constant stress or major willpower, and you'll reach your goals. If your experience is like mine, the results will be worth it!4 -
Keep it up. I recommend you don't count the first week though, in terms of, "I lost X pounds in Y weeks." As others said, most of it is water weight. Glycogen in the muscles stores 3g of water with each gram. High sodium in your former diet also increases water retention. Maybe you continue to lose 2 pounds per week from here, which would be great.1

only lose 2 pounds per week
Congratulations on a great start. Two pounds per week loss is considered the most aggressive rate for sustainable loss, possibly with wiggle room for much higher starting weight. So take the “only” out so you are equipped for success.
Your initial 8 pound loss is fine, though, since it’s largely water weight.
Keep it up!2 -
great! the first week is a dramatic drop due to water, so don’t get discouraged when other weigh ins so slim losses or even none at times. lots of things in our body “weigh” something including waste leftover in our intestines!2
