I too am behind on posts and miles @emptydog! Well, I finally got caught up reading but the miles…..This past weekend was Peyton’s Wild n Wacky 50K held in Laurel Hill County Park in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I was part of a 2-person team and other friends formed a 5-person team. We drove down on Thursday and played tourist on Friday resting and eating all things in anticipation of Saturday’s run. Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not onboard with this idea and she reared her ugly head Saturday morning forcing a cancellation of the entire event. We were up at 4:00 am and in the park by 5:30 am for a 7:00 am start. At 7:00 am, we lined up at the start line only to be told the start would be delayed 30 minutes because people were having trouble getting into the park. Then it was delayed another 30 minutes. Our group hanging out under our tent waiting to start:Happy Birthday @ContraryMaryMary! What a gorgeous place to celebrate with your family. Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Definitely celebrate as long as possible!
Unfortunately, it started thundering and lightening and raining very hard. We made a run for our cars to wait it out but it did not slow down. After about 30 minutes, we dashed back (through calf deep water) and grabbed our tent and chairs and joined the line of cars out of the park. Thankfully we got out ok but lots of vehicles got stuck and needed assistance. This is a photo of a friend in the area were all the teams set up their tents.
Sending healing thoughts your way @yirara.
@TheMrWobbly – My heart rate progressively increases with my mileage also. A lot of people do a regimented run/walk plan for races but once I stop running, I have a hard time getting going again so I just plod along.
Congrats on your 2nd place finishing award @eleanorhawkins!
@daria0919 – I started out running in Asics but switched to Brooks. I haven’t been happy with the last few models of Brooks. I need to find something else. I hope retying the left one helps.

You know that feeling: You want to post something on MFP, and the moment you hit POST the website goes offline and you feel like you destroyed it 🤣
05.03 4.5km 36min 8:06/km - 12 stride repeats
06.03 6.2km 51min 8:12/km - 10, 5, 5, 5min intervals
08.03 7.0km 57min 8:09/km - slow
09.03 3.0km 25min 8:26/km - slow
11.03 4.2km 35min 8:16/km - slow
13.03 5.3km 43min 8:08/km - 22ish stride repeats
30.24km/80km, 3.8km behind
Still not a great run but it was more fun. For some reason running very short faster intervals was easier than slow steady state, thus instead of the 12 stride repeats I was supposed to do I did around 22.8 -
@ContraryMaryMary That hill could be an issue. But, I say if you are feeling you need to see the GP, maybe you should. I think we tend to know when something is amiss with our bodies.
You're doing great @Scott6255 . I'm glad you got to play golf with your son. I'm sure that was a really nice day of cross training.
Great recovery run @Laurz9191 . Enjoy your day off tomorrow.
@Aquarian Congratulations on the speedy 5K!
@Teresa502 Wow! That is a lot of water! I'm glad you got out of there before you got stuck. Sorry you didn't get to do the race though. Did they reschedule? At least it sounds like you had a nice day of sight seeing out of the deal.
@yirara You are doing great. A lot of the time, I prefer short fast intervals to steady state running too.4 -

Yesterday, I walked a mile on the treadmill before heading out for a lunch and visit with some family that was passing though the area.
Today, I walked a mile on the treadmill before taking mom to an eye doctor appointment and then "mowed" off the hill beside my shop and another spot next to my garden.
The hill before I started today

@Teresa502 yikes! Sorry your race got cancelled, but dang! That is a biblical flood!
@quilteryoyo great work on that mow job!
Did 7 miles this morning. It was a purposeful slow(er) run. Pace was exactly 1 min slower than yesterday, but sure didn't feel that much easier.

Upper body workout followed by a 5K. Pretty morning sky and temp was in the 40s.
@quilteryoyo – The race won’t be rescheduled. The logistics would just be too much with that many people, many who traveled like us, and they had already spent the registration costs on food, porta-potties, etc. The organizers were really devasted that they had to cancel. You may recall this husband/wife hold the race in memory of their son Peyton who died unexpectedly when he was 9 years old. We do get first dibs on registration for next year’s race which is good because it typically sells out in hours.
@Scott6255 – In the low country of SC there is just no place for the water to go when it rains like that. I’m just glad no alligators went floating by!

Another of those slog it out runs and home just as the rain was starting. I thing its the cold temperatures and not dressing warn enough that's causing it.
@ContraryMaryMary - Happy Birthday!
@Teresa502 - Sorry your race had to cancel but holymoly that was some rain!

I ran 7 miles this morning. It was hot. It was 70°F when I got up at 4:30 this morning. I think it dropped to 69°F by the time I ran at 5:30, but I don't think there is really any difference. I felt good though, and had a great run. I know it was just the first of many hot and sweaty runs to come.
@Teresa502 I'm so sorry that your race was cancelled. That happened to me once, and I think the race director was probably more upset about it than anyone. We all want to be badasses who will run no matter what, but you do have to think about safety. I hope you are able to get in and run it next year.
I have a question about shoes. I have recently signed up for my first trail run in May. Do I need to get trail shoes, or will my road shoes be ok? And if I do get trail shoes will I be able to use them to run on the roads? I typically run from my house, so my runs are all on roads.

No idea why running all of a sudden is so difficult. But at least I did manage to run, right? Also nearly caught up with my running goal for this month8 -

For PK you'll be ok in road shoes. Esp because you don't really do trails any other time.4 -
Great workout and run today @Teresa502 . I'm sure the organizers were devastated too and I understand why it isn't feasible to reschedule. I'm glad at least you get first dibs next year. I'm glad there were no alligators too!
@Mari33a You did great slogging it out. Glad you beat the rain.
Glad you had a nice run today @kgirlhart , even if it was hot. I'll leave the shoe question to those trail runners among us.
@yirara Getting out the door and getting it done is the most important thing. I do hope they get easier for you soon though.2 -

I did a wun on the driveway this morning. I could have gone further and faster, but I was conserving energy for bush hogging this afternoon. I'm glad I did, because I was really tired when I was done. I may have gotten half of that field done today.6 -

Thanks @martaindale. It's nice to be able to get advice from someone who has run this race before.
Good luck on your race Saturday @emptydog!4 -

It was such a beautiful day yesterday. Sunshine and 72F so I did a second run on the trail at our local park for an additional 2 miles on the day. Light sprinkles on this morning run but I was grateful it wasn’t storming. I encountered some lightning on my drive into town but thankful it was all north of where we ran.
Good luck and have fun with your 5K race @emptydog!
@kgirlhart – I don’t know the terrain, but I would go with @martaindale’s recommendation and wait to invest in a pair of trail shoes. I dislike running on the road in my trail shoes. I feel like I’m running in spikes or something!
6 -
@emptydog Great running. Good luck with your race tomorrow.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA . Hahaha Great run and streak. Enjoy tonight and we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Great running @teresa502. I'm glad you didn't get stormed on.

@Teresa502 sorry to hear your race got cancelled. A bit frustrating when looking forward to a race and then it doesn’t happen.
@emptydog good luck with your race Saturday! Let us know how it went.
@quilteryoyo bush jogging (oops meant hogging 😂) sounds like hard work! Great job!
@tarun_yadavA nice streak! Enjoy guys night!6 -
Feeling down….I’ve been feeling a bit dejected since Tuesday about my training for my 10K. I had a terrible run Tuesday with the warm weather setting in and cut the run short that day. My personal trainer overworked me Wednesday morning and my whole mid section and chest area are sore beyond belief. She’s in her early 30s and had no understanding of what a woman in her mid 60s who’s overweight and older than her can or can’t do. My brain is willing, but my muscles, tendons and ligaments have a mind of their own. I was so miserable yesterday I didn’t even attempt my 4-miler yesterday that was on the training schedule. I did get a mile in on the walking pad. I did a slow 2.55 miles this morning, but with it being 60F and humid I was miserable. I’m part ‘penguin’ and can happily run in 3F but once it gets above mid 50s I start to get miserable. My genetic make up is such that my body loves cold weather and is miserable in warm weather.
I’m thinking of dropping down to the lower level of the training program. They have two versions for training the 10K. I’ve been doing the higher version and through Sunday have been feeling fine with it. Since Tuesday I just feel run down every day with no energy. Maybe my body has reached its limit for now.
This coming Sunday the lower group is covering 4.5 miles and the higher group is doing 5.5 miles. The lower group works its way up to 6 miles for the longest run and the higher group will do several six milers as well as a 7-miler a couple of weeks before race day.
Up until this week I happily stuck with the training plan. Now I just can’t seem to keep up. Getting older sucks! I feel a good 20 years younger than my body and it’s frustrating when I want to do more, but seem to reach a limit that I’m not happy with.
Well, I have until Sunday morning to decide whether I’ll do the 4.5 or 5.5 miles. Thanks for ‘“listening” to me vent.9 -
@daria0919 No shame in stepping down to the lower level training group. You'll still be prepared for race day and your body will have more opportunity to recover.4
-
Right there with you @daria0919
I seem to come away from PT sessions feeling like something is broken. I am definitely too fat to run my marathon in 5 weeks, bits of me seem to take turns to fail.
Still struggling once I get to 13 miles... and two months ago I struggled to get past 7 miles, then 10 miles, then I couldn't do 13 without hitting the wall. Last week I managed 15 miles, sheer plum-tuckered at the end.
I will aim for 17 on Saturday, if I don't make it, try again next week. I won't decide until I am at 13 miles how far I am going on that run.
There is no chance I will be ready for this marathon. I will still complete it. Running, walking, crawling, it really doesn't matter. Hopefully I will be ready for the next one in October.
You are getting out there, you are putting in the yards. Every one counts. That is something to celebrate. We will celebrate with you when you cross the line of the 10k. Time doesn't matter, how you feel about you does. Left foot, right foot, repeat. We have got this!9 -
March total: 38.6 miles
YTD: 239.8/1200 miles
3/2: 4.1 miles
3/4: 4.1 miles
3/5: 6.4 miles
3/7: 3 miles
3/9: 4.5 miles
3/11: 3 miles
3/12: 6 miles
3/14: 4.5 miles
3/15: 3 miles
Logging 3 runs today. I've checked in a couple times but haven't taken the time to update my log.
Summer is upon us again. My last 2 runs have been low 70's and 95% humidity before dawn. Blegh.
Per a recent discussion about HR by @TheMrWobbly mine also creeps up consistently. I have found that conditions play a major role. This morning I purposefully kept my HR below 150, which is the upper end of zone 3 for me. In order to do that I ran at almost 12 min/mile and still had to take 10-30 sec walk breaks in the last 1.5 miles of a 3 mile run. Avg pace 12:18 - a little over 3 min/mile slower than my HM race pace. I have no doubt my HR would have been closer to 165 by the end of my run if I hadn't taken walk breaks.
All that to say, if you really want to see your HR lower, you have to reduce effort with walk breaks and/or an overall slower running pace. For me, perceived exertion is key. When it's hot I don't usually worry about my HR too much until it hits 170, which it will on any run approaching 6+ miles. In cooler conditions I could run that same pace and have a lower HR or achieve that HR at a faster pace. As far as my body knows, the effort is the same. You have to find the balance of what the effort level is at which you can recover efficiently and still meet your training goals.6 -
@daria0919 - Maybe you should change to a trainer who has more experience with the aches and pains us older people have. I've been following a series with a trainer on her app and the series is designed for 5 days a week. I find that I have to pick and choose which workouts that I do rather than following the calendar. If my legs are tired from running hills or hiking mountains instead of leg day I will do an upper body workout. I've finally realized that I can't do it all and need to listen to my body. Not use it as an excuse not to push myself but know when to slow it down or take a break. Perhaps drop back to the lower group this week and take it easy. Then you can always jump back up to the higher group if you feel froggy!7
-
It was a good run. 62°F. I wore shorts and a tank top. Not really much to say about it.
Dang...I was going to send this the other day then thought, "nah, Texans don't need my snark."
You get two days each year where there is not much to say, sandwiches between the bitter cold and the brutal heat.
🥵🏃🏼♀️🥶
One in March, one in September.7 -
05.03 4.5km 36min 8:06/km - 12 stride repeats
06.03 6.2km 51min 8:12/km - 10, 5, 5, 5min intervals
08.03 7.0km 57min 8:09/km - slow
09.03 3.0km 25min 8:26/km - slow
11.03 4.2km 35min 8:16/km - slow
13.03 5.3km 43min 8:08/km - 22ish stride repeats
14.03 5.7km 47min 8:18/km - slow
15.03 6.1km 48min 7.56/km - 10min fast
42.00km/80km, 2.8km ahead
So I have no idea what happened here. After about 20mins I was about to give up. It was raining kind of horizontally, I'd lost 700m of my running track due to a rain drop stopping my phone running app, and then I got annoyed and starting running faster. My HR shot up in the high 180s and I suddenly could run again. Like fast (me-fast that is). Look at my pace for this month. My leg muscles felt weak but the legs not heavy or painful for once. No idea where this energy suddenly came from. I'm.. flabbergasted.
I edited the distance based on mapping programmes and I had the start and end time. Thus distance and pace should be fairly accurate here.6
